Every year we come to Scottsdale in August and have been going from the plane to The Mission for guacamole and margaritas to get us started on our mini-vacation. This year we decided to try something else, and Barrio Queen showed up on all sorts of lists, so we opted to visit and give it a try. Glad we stopped in! We used GPS to find the location and were very confused. We walked around the plaza area until we figured out that the ginormous blue canopy that doesn't say anything about Barrio Queen is actually the entrance. It's not until you're standing at the front door do you see the smaller signs. Sheesh! Anyway, the interior is folksy and looks like your average neighborhood Mexican restaurant. The staff are friendly, and we were seated at a comfortable table. The menu has lots of margarita options; some that are pretty generous (yes!). Our tableside guacamole was pretty much the best we've had in a long time. We were skeptical of the pomegranates, but they add a brightness that had us scooping it up with gusto. Prices were fine, service was good, and for sure we'll be back next year. read more

First time last night, and we will be back! Great service by Eddie. Nice selection of margaritas- my " People's Choice" with pineapple-forward was terrific. The regular margarita was also very good. We saw a special peach concoction that looked amazing. Good chips - the salsa is fine but not as flavorful as I would like, but they have a spicy version that was good (and hot). We started with the table-side guacamole plus the roasted elote (with the corn off the cob), and the elote was the best! The garlic shrimp was excellent and had an abundance of shrimp. The cochinito (slow roasted pork) was outstanding and could feed two. Finished with tres leches (big portion, and quite good) and a smallish flan (good, not great, but I am a fan of the Caribbean flan - lighter, wet Carmel sauce). I lot of great menu items! read more

Meh. I've been following this place on insta & finally stopped by on a recent trip. We didn't have reservations but were able to find a seat at the bar. The service was good, even for a friday night. the food, though, was just okay. It doesn't help that we had just landed from TX so i had tex mex on my mind...I had the Camarones al mojo de ajo expecting a bit more mojo (...something a bit more drenched in garlicky flavor). This location is very convenient for visitors around Holiday time. The restaurant decorations are very nice, however, the food and service were mediocre. From the moment we sit down and waited for service just to bring us water at least 15 minutes plus... then went on for the rest of dinner. Seemed like our waiter was very careless his tables. We knew what we ordered on the menu, but the food was so bad that we thought it is really Mexican food. No flavors or spices that bring the true umami flavor of Mexican cuisine. They just thrown whole bunches of protein into tortillas and cheese on top and called it Authentic Mexican food. No wonder there's none of Latino dine-in here. read more

My to favorite things on the menu are the cheese enchiladas which are a four Mexican cheese style enchilada, and the carne asada , with the steak generally perfectly seasoned and cooked. The guacamole is made in front of you, the margaritas are excellent and there's indoor seating with a beautiful outdoor patio near the Scottsdale waterfront. Service is good, but they don't take reservations and there's usually a wait . They have a great happy hour with fairly priced tacos and drinks. My wife and I have been here at least 20 times in the last 8 years and were always pleased with the service and food. Not on Thursday, April 16, 2026. The place was not even half full. We felt foolish standing in the entrance to the outdoor patio waiting for so long. I had to go back to the main entrance to get the hostess again. She seemed clueless and completely uncaring. They cleared the table, and then we waited for the waiter. He is older, and we have had him on several other occasions. He offered his apologies, but even his service was slow. Rushing everywhere, but not many patrons. Margaritas taste great, but the glass was filled with way too much ice and not much drink. The basket of chips was all broken into little pieces, and the salsa was ENTIRELY liquid. It was like dipping into a cup of juice. At my request, he replaced both, but it wasn't much better. The Carne Asada was just average. To top this awful experience off, we waited 15 minutes for the waiter to come back for the check. I had to ask another waiter to find him. Yaaassss queen! A client recommendation drove me to try this place and they did not disappoint. Location in downtown was perfect for a little stroll followed by some delicious Palomas! Restaurant was packed but we were able to find a seat at the bar. Every staff member was attentive and happy to check on us during our stay. You can never go wrong with some tasty salsa and chips with a shot of tequila. So many things looked good but opted for the bar tenders recommended taco selection. YUM!!! The serving size was just right had I not eaten so many chips. The al pastor was soooo good, shrimp was nice and fresh with the carne coming in at 3rd for me. Don't get me wrong, it was all so good. We came here on a Friday night. It was kicking, but we were able to get a table within 25 minutes. We had a few drinks while waiting at the bar. The bar has a wide selection of tequilas ranging from blancas, anejos, reposado, and mescals. The drink menu is quite extensive to be honest, a whole book and they have draft beers on tap. When we were seated at a high table there were four of us ordering. We ordered mostly tacos: two each cochinita pibil (signature pork), mar y tierra (surf and turf), carnitas, gulf shrimp, and al pastor. Fresh chips and their roasted roja salsa and a gulf shrimp quesadilla to start. It was very filling and so, so good! The wait was well worth it, everything is house made and authentic. This is my favorite location for BQ so far, although typically very busy on Friday/Saturday night. Spacious seating inside and 2 patios outside. Full bar. Service is always great and their table side guacamole is always great, it includes pomegranate seeds. Has their specialty dish Cochinita Pibil which is the softest pork marinated in a sour orange and slow roasted over night. Really unusual and a great dish. If you are ready for some lasting pain, be brave and ask for their hot salsa. Wow. Upside down margaritas, about 40 mezcal and tequilas on the menu and many Mexican beers on tap. One thing I don't like about this location is that their restrooms are located outside and shared with the public restrooms, makes me cringe as I cannot feel like my hands are clean by the time you navigate the public toilet and outside doors from the sink back inside the restaurant. Ladies have a convenient bathroom located by the bar. Would be great if the restaurant could put in a communal sink somewhere inside like Angry Crab or True Foods does as the public outdoor restrooms are not that well kept. Recently went to Barrio Queen on Stetson Drive as we were craving Mexican. Have been to that location previously (about two years ago) but the quality of the food has definitely gone down hill. First the menu changed - was looking for Chiles en nogada and it was no longer on the menu. My order came with rice and beans and the beans were canned - could smell them and of course taste was definitely canned. What a disappointment! We will never ever return to this Barrio Queen location. read more

First time at this location and it was delicious! My husband and I each ordered a margarita (Who's Your Daddy and Jalapeño Margarita) and shared the table side guacamole to start. Our bartender/server was so sweet (I forgot her name but she has short blonde hair) and she took great care of us, made our delicious drinks, and also made the guacamole - SO YUM! We ordered the tres enchiladas (the queen enchilada was the BOMB!! That sauce is divine!) and the vegetarian tamale and this was plenty for us to share - still so full! I've been here a couple of times now and I really want to like it but we dont. The service is always on point and we love the tableside guacamole, although they don't mash the avocado much and they left the top pit from the avocado in the guac and my wife bit down on it. We just haven't liked anything else we have tried. The tacos are tiny and not very good, the chicken has a gamey not good taste to it. We are always disappointed with our main entrees. My wife didn't even eat her food and we had to go get something else for her to eat on the way home. It's a shame cause the guac (when mashed up) is on point. An always busy location in old town Scottsdale. Got in early enough to secure a seat at the bar and the bartender, who was busy with other customers, acknowledged me right away. Chips and salsa are always provided while perusing the menu options and they are quite good. I ordered the Barrio Pollo Burrito that comes with rice and refried beans (other option available). The green chilies give it the perfect kick and it's a generous sized burrito...... very appetizing. It's a great location in the heart of old town and the place has a lot of energy. Barrio Queen is an A-OK Mexican restaurant that has locations around the Phoenix metropolitan area. This location is in the Fashion District in Scottsdale, so was busy on a Saturday night when we came here for dinner. Although it's a trendy spot, I found the food to be lackluster, which is my complaint with this place. Barrio Queen was super busy when we arrived on a Saturday night. It seemed like the place to be at before a night of mayhem, seriously. Hey, I don't judge, that's cool. I liked how lively the place was, especially the bar area where we were sitting in. But if you're coming here to have an intimate conversation then go elsewhere 'cause it gets loud in here. The menu featured many traditional Mexican items and a full list of cocktails, including a variety of margaritas. I ordered a margarita and asked if they could make a prickly pear one, which they said they could. Yet when I received my margarita, it was super weak on the tequila and prickly pear flavor, so I tasted mostly lime. I would not recommend. I also ordered the carnitas for dinner, and the pork was burnt from being cooked in the cast iron grill for too long. I did like the corn tortillas that it came with, and the dish overall had some great flavor. But for some tender carnitas, you won't expect them here. All in all, for some good ol' authentic Mexican food, I can't say I'd recommend Barrio Queen. It seems to be more of a place where you go for drinks and to have fun before bar hopping nearby, especially given its popular location. So, if there's a happy hour, that may be more suitable. But I wouldn't be dining here again when in town. read more

Three street tacos for $15 is a little steep, but they were tasty and they do provide you with chips so that's nice. Fun place to go if you're in downtown Scottsdale but not worth going out of your way for IMO. We got the nationally famous guacamole - being completely honest we make our guacamole at home just like this and it's equally delicious. So not worth the $15 for me, but they do make it in front of you so if you're looking for that experience it is fun! The green Chile pork was good, it's chunked not shredded, and the tortilla the burrito came in was good. It cost $15 but was MASSIVE, so we shared. The restaurant is large but was mostly empty when we went on a weekday evening. We were immediately seated by the server room a long time to bring waters and take our orders. Looks like a little of people coming just for happy hour drinks and salsa. The drinks were large but not great. They had a jalapeno margarita which was being spicy even for someone who enjoys spice. I asked to have it less spicy and was told no since it was jalapeno infused tequila, and when I asked if it could be half the infused and half regular, the server rolled their eyes and said how about i just bring you a regular, and walked away with the drink. The tacos were dry and not flavorful. The pepper was like wet diaper texture with no flavor. We didn't finish annoying and left to go get food elsewhere. Will not be going back again. read more

This is a solid place for tacos in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. They have a really extensive menu with all sorts of tacos that you can imagine. I chose 3 different types of street tacos and I thought they were delicious. The carne asada had tender chunks of meat paired with really fresh pico de gallio. The fish tacos had a nice crispy exterior but moist flaky meat on the inside. Finally, the unique taco that I had was the cactus taco. Strips of roasted cactus were tender and flavorful and paired well with the cotija cheese. Overall, an excellent restaurant right in the heart of the city. Beautiful ambiance and decor, as well as ample patio space to take advantage of the excellent Arizona weather. The only slight demerit was that service can be slow. We sat around for almost half an hour after getting our waters before a server came back to take our orders. Then another close to 40 minutes before our food came out. I have always enjoyed BQ. Visited other locations and found to be consistent in service and food. On this visit I'm questioning whether to ever visit again. In fact I decided to sleep on it before writing this review. We learned of relative visiting and wanted to go out. It was decided to go to Old Town BQ. Called to make reservations done without a hitch. Arrived about 30 minutes early because we wanted a cocktail and chips before our guests arrived. Frankly it was important that all went without problems. We announced our arrival and told them that we were going to bar. They told us no problem the table would be available soon. Should've asked definitions of "soon". At bar, bartender was swamped and getting help from teammates (cleaning, getting chips/salsa and order taking) but a lot of drinks were made. It was slow, JS. Our party arrived around reservation time +/-. We informed them at counter. Greeter said people haven't left yet so we have to wait. Ok, they ordered a cocktail and we waited at the bar. After 30 minutes we all went to hostess asking for a table. Unfortunately the people were still at table. They said once they leave we're next. Now the place is small with most tables filled with large groups. Additionally it's hot outside so using outside tables was not an option unfortunately. So back to the bar we went. As we enjoyed our cocktails a table at bar was opening up. A waitress helped us get the table. Then at the same time the table that was earmarked for us opened. We went to hostess asking for our table. A random group of guys snatched the table. I asked hostess what's up. She responded "it wasn't her job" and proceeded to say this job sucks. I'm sorry. Can I speak to manager. No problem manager came over and said "she can do nothing". Huh? Say what? So customers that plan and wait are left out? Very disappointing. But thank goodness the waitress was feeling our frustration and insured a table. We sat and ordered immediately since we memorized the menu while waiting. We shared steak fajitas while our guests ordered tacos. Fajitas were dry and over cooked. And they were cold but vegetables were hot sizzling. Humm? I'm sure the meat was cooked earlier put to side then served when needed on hot veggies. To be sealed it took 1 hour 5 minutes after reservation. Too long especially given the circumstances. In fact I didn't give all interactions with manager. No responsibility was taken for this incident. Our guests said the tacos were good but not special. So that's good to hear. A couple of observations, management needs to take control of seating. Willy/nilly does not work. Second please focus on food preparation, it's an item that will kill any establishment fast. Thirdly the customer is number one, if you're honest to all, people will understand. It's ok to tell someone that the table has been taken. Not a good experience. read more
