When you walk in, you immediately smell something really good and clean almost like orange essence. The kiosk ordering area is pretty user-friendly and the food itself is really delicious. Dropped by on a Sunday evening. It was largely empty, the a/c wasn't working inside so we sat on the patio. We had the house quesadilla, a birria taco, a mahi mahi taco and the churro/waffle bites. All were good! The setting both is casual and comfortable. They do need to fix the cushions on the patio bench seating a it's torn up and jagged. We went here twice during our stay in AZ. Our experience both times was excellent. You walk in and order at the counter if you are a first time there human or can sit down with a paper menu if you've been in before, according to the sign. We just used the counter twice as I spotted the same guy I'd talked allergens with the prior time working the counter and wanted to make life easier by going to him. He remembered me and all my allergens, corrected one thing he'd looked up after I left (something I hadn't ordered as I suspected it might have soy in a minor way... which it did) and apologized for the first time's oversight on it. If you know your allergens and take a gander at their old allergen menu up online, you can do what I did and kind of know one thing might not be correct. But that's anywhere! So I'm definitely not docking him for it. He went to the kitchen to talk to kitchen staff about it the first time and I ordered the stuff in my safety zone. All was perfectly fine and they even wrote in all my allergens on the receipt. The second time I offroaded a bit and everything was still great and no issues after, so yay! Tacos were grand but the real star was the black beans. I loved them so much I had them both days + took one bowl of them back to the hotel and had them later. Iced tea was okay. The water was oddly incredibly good. I don't usually like water, but I drank multiple cups of it while I was there from their machine and took one away with us both times. It's extremely hot in this restaurant! I politely asked the management to please make it cooler and he said that 81 degrees is a good acceptable temperature! What?? It's 100 degrees outside and most every restaurant keeps the temperature closer to 69-72 degrees. This is completely unacceptable and also their poor employees having to work like that? Oh my goodness. This has been my spot for over a decade. Yet, the service that we received from Hector was like none other. From the time we walked to the cashier he was so attentive, kind, humble, and truly engaging to my entire family. This young man is one of a kind. Even while we were eating he came to check on us and make sure we were good. We felt like VIP's and yet I look around and everyone he is in contact with he was just the same with all. Wow. This young man is going places. May God bless him eternally for the kindness that he has shown. He is a true shining light. Thank you Hector for being you. I stopped in to get churro waffle bites as my birthday gift and they were delicious! They come with a good caramel dipping sauce. The inside is very cute and modern and I like the plant shelves. Came here on a Saturday night around 6:30. It's a fast casual restaurant where you order & pay at the counter, they give you a number and the food arrives! Worst Service ever! Food is good but the staff needs to go. From the manager all the way down to the server and people taking your order have so much attitude its insane. They consistently forget items you order and then make it your fault when you bring it to their attention. They offer rewards and will use them sometimes on items and other times they say it cannot be done. It just depends on who you talk too. Having not been to Tocaya in several months, and very much missing the Kierland Commons location, we were at the Scottsdale Mall and had to take advantage of them being there. The location is thoughtfully placed outside of the Lifetime Executive Gym and the Designer Wing of the Mall. Beautiful string lights highlight the outside, and somehow even on a hot day, it seemed a little bit cooler of an ambiance. We walk in & notice the menu has changed a little bit (no more Spicy Vegan Cheese was one thing I noticed), and Brandon was happy to walk us through the updates. We ordered and sat awaiting our delicious dinner cooked right in front of us in the open concept kitchen. Our meal was served up quickly, warm, and with good presentation. A coworker recommended Tocaya, describing it as an upscale Chipotle, so we decided to venture into Scottsdale and give it a good college try. It's counter service, without the counter. To order, choose a table, scan a QR, and place an order. While I love convenience, I wasn't the biggest fan of this option because, as newcomers, we weren't able to really get any recommendations or talk about the food with those who know it best. So, we ordered blindly. I ordered a carne taco and the squash blossom taco. Both were fantastic. My only suggestion would be to add pickled onions to the squash blossom taco, it just needed a bit more acid to balance out the flavors and add a bit of crunch. My partner ordered a carne burrito and absolutely loved it. The salsa is good, but the flavor is heavily tomato forward, with very little heat. The horchata and strawberry/basil water is freaking fantastic! Definitely recommend the agua frescas. Overall we enjoyed the food and didn't leave feeling like a stuffed sausage. read more

We had our book club meet here. It was my first time eating here. Inside of restaurant isn't that big but offers a cozy dining experience. There is a happy hour from 3-6pm. We ordered the guacamole and opted to have plantain chips with those, chips and salsa and the street corn. For my entree, I ordered the Grilled Pineapple Al Pastor but subbed out the Diablo Chicken (too spicy for me) for the chicken tings. OMG the bowl was so delicious. This restaurant has a very nice ambiance. Clean and modern. It is kind of like an upscale chipotle but the food is made in the kitchen and not like the chipotle setup. My whole family enjoyed this food. Very flavorful. I am visiting from out of town and would love to eat here all the time. The black bean soup was good, all the bowls were good, and even the aqua Fresca was good. I usually do not like Frescas, but this is delicious! My brother ordered 2 tequila drinks and the bartender did an amazing job with mixing the drinks as i tasted both of them and they were very good. Unfortunately this location is not at all like the previously closed one in kierland commons. The employees were very nice but they were not knowledgeable about the menu. They offer gluten free items and when we checked to make sure my sister was ordering a gluten free item multiple employees got it confused with vegan and started talking about the cheese and recommended dishes that were not gluten free thankfully she could tell just by appearance something was off and some digging on the internet later I was able to confirm the dish was not gluten free. It's not their job to know about her allergy but if you're gonna offer gluten free items the customer trusts they're getting something gluten free that was the problem for us here. read more

I want to love Tocaya, but it just happens to be a miss every time. I leave feeling like I've been scammed. I still find myself frequenting the fashion square location purely out of convenience and the fact that it feels healthier than chipotle. My problem - they are SO freakin stingy with their protein amount! They say 3oz per $15 bowl/burrito, but I have had the fajita Del Ray bowl and others on multiple occasions where I'd be surprised if it was more than 1.5oz, or quarter of chicken breast. It's the worst I've ever seen anywhere. On a positive note, I'm a huge fan of their guac! Not only is it tasty but it comes with thin fried plantain chips that make it a home-run. Okay, so I hate leaving bad reviews, being that I work in the retail and food service industry, as well--but maybe this can come as some constructive criticism: I was super excited to order my take out--because I've ate at Tocaya more than a handful of times, when the Biltmore location was open. Always was great food and cocktails, love that it's Gluten friendly-- So I was excited to be working (seasonally) at Fashion Square and even more excited to be able to lunch at Tocaya. Unfortunately, I felt like the quality isn't the same anymore. I ordered the Sonora Steak Bowl only to barely enjoy what was served. The negatives: The rice was SO hard. Only about a quarter of the rice was bearable to eat and the rest was so sticky and hard--Worst part was that it was all mixed together. The steak was terrible. I figured I can at least eat the only protein in the bowl, but it was full of fat. I had to spit everything out (sorry for the detailed picture) The corn was okay (looked dehydrated and overcooked), the potatoes were okay. There was a teaspoon of guacamole. All for the price of around $17, $20 after tipping the crew. The bowl was filled below the line, if you guys are giving portions like that, might as well settle for smaller packaging. They got some of our taco orders wrong and some people in my party are vegan/gluten free and have unique diet restrictions. Initially Bella our server was very rude but Andrea was such a great subsequent server for us despite them getting some of the orders wrong for our tacos. She was very gracious in providing us the right tacos with the appropriate diet restrictions. Although they got orders wrong, they were very good at fixing their mistakes.
