Barry Reder should not be allowed to work on young kids. My son had a terrible experience there years ago, when he was a toddler. Kids get strapped down and sedated. My son was freaked out, as were most other kids. I overhead a cruel mom yelling at her kid to stop crying... poor kid. We took him to another dentist and he was fine, no nitrous, no strapping down, no screaming, and no long term trauma. read more

Despite some of the negative reviews we had a very good experience here. This was my daughter's first visit at the dentist. The front office staff were always welcoming and friendly. The decor is cute and this office is very kid friendly. The best thing about the visits were we didn't mind waiting in the waiting room. They have lots of books, magazines, and games to keep the kids and yourself occupied. Lol! The rooms are also equipped with tv's and it keeps the kids distracted during the exam. The doctors here if you notice are father and son. We saw both of the Doctors and they were both great! We always had a wonderful visit and they always made my daughter feel comfortable which made me happy! read more

Responding to Dr Reder with his lovely response. I was an actual paying client to your office. My son was an actual patient of yours. I have the awful looking tooth in every one of his smiling pictures to prove it. Paid adds or not, whatever that means, you provided a service, and that service was not good, nor was the work you did. You behaved improperly to my son, and clearly did not take pride in your job as a PEDIATRIC dentist. You should be embarassed in your initial work with my son, and of your response here. I pride myself in being an honest person and my review was in no way a lie or embellished. Awful, awful awful. When my son was 2, he fell and severely cracked his front baby tooth through the middle up into the gums. Very painful for anyone, let alone a 2 year old. Our then regular dentist recommended the father of this practice as it was a pretty delicate situation in a small mouth. My son was in pain, and I wanted him to get treatment ASAP so I didn't shop around. First off, the xray system used was old school. The bite plates they made my son use were entirely too large for his mouth and it HURT. The nurse had to retake a few times because my son barely moved and it blurred. After capturing what seemed like an decent one, Dr came in and SNAPPED at the nurse, then at me, for not keeping him still enough. So, back to xray. Along with xray, he wants to do a visual exam of the tooth. So he has my son straddle me, then has me flip him upside down and pries his mouth open to look inside his mouth. My poor kid was scared, in pain, and now this. Dr confirms the tooth is cracked, verifies it to me in the xray, and he has the workup written up. I couldn't afford to pay for sedation (cash payment, but if I could, trust me I would have. Dr. assured me it would be ok without, and that my son would still have local of course) but I found it disturbing that they charged me somewhere around $85 for the use of one of those strap down boards for the procedure. Seriously?! Wow.. wish that was all though. It gets worse. So I pay for the services recommended. Root canal and a white cap since it's his front tooth, he's 2, and pulling isn't optimal because it could affect his jaw down the road. We go into the room, I give my son a positive kiss and tell him I love him and he will be ok soon. I am asked to take a seat at the foot of the chair. So I sit, staying out of the way of those in the room. My son is screaming, scared and I have my hand resting on his leg, trying to comfort him with reassuring words. I wasn't freaking out, I wasn't bawling maniacally, I was simply saying things like "it's ok, it'll be ok" every once in a while. Tears did stream down my face (100% out of my son's view), but my voice was strong and I certainly wasn't hysterical. (My daughter once split her forehead open and I had the Dr show me it went to the skull - I'm no stranger to being a level headed mom in a tough situation) Meanwhile Dr Barry Reder never once says anything to my son to try in any way to reassure him. The only time he spoke was to bark orders at nurses. Anyway, this jerk of at dentist abruptly and rudely declares "Mom needs to go to the lobby if she's going to be hysterical in my room" Oh...my...gosh. I was stunned! Hysterical?! But.. against my true desire, and quite dazed I decided to leave the room and wait it out. I will always regret that. My son was so traumatized by this experience, and I couldn't even drive near the area for a year without him begging me not to take him to the dentist. Our post check up was pure torture getting him in the door. While I clearly understand most of this was because of the work itself, the dentists bedside manner made it significantly worse. He never once attempted to be kind to my child or to me. He didn't smile, he snapped at both my son and me frequently, and his poor assistant seemed to walk on eggshells. Then, at the end of this whole fiasco, they tried to charge me for the extra xrays they had to take because they turned out blury! I spent almost $1,000 and they were going to bilk me for more? Long story short, from my experience I say run fast. Find a good dentist that actually likes kids. Oh, and the tooth looked awful. 2 sizes too big and our current dentist was appalled at how bad the work was done. My son is 5 now, and it still doesn't fit his mouth. I can't wait for it to fall out. Poor kid looks like someone shoved a chicklet on his tooth literally looks like that. It's ugly and in no way looks like a tooth. Dr Reder is an amazingly wonderful dentist. Both of my kids have seen him since they were about 4 years old. He's always been kind and patient and considered what was best for my two. One of mine had numerous dental issues including a congenital abnormality requiring caps and fillings, a need for expanders, and a need for early intervention braces. Dr Reder always considered what was best for her and wanted to ensure she didn't grow a fear of dentists. He was successful! I just moved my teenagers to my dentist and I must admit I shed a tear after informing Dr Reder's office. I really want to sincerely thank him and his team for all that they have done for my two. I took my son to this office for several visits. Every visit, we had a different experience. Unfortunately, most of those visits were negative. Once the dental assistants was very aggressive and clearly irritated that my six year old son would not sit still for the x-rays. He has developed a little bit of anxiety about going to the dentist and was having a hard time. The dental assistant snapped "Does he act like this at home?!" The dentist himself was hot and cold. He suggested I put my son under to do all of his cavities at once for the cost that was way over my budget when they knew I was struggling to make my expensive co-pays. Hours are limited and challenging to make if you work full time. Not sure if prices were fair or if they were charging more for extra profit. There was one dental assistant with short hair and who moved away and then came back to work there who was really sweet. But, other than that there is no way I could recommend this office at all. read more

Dr. Seth Reder(the son) is a great Dentist. He is very patient with the children. He explains everything to the parents AND does his best to layman down the info to accomodate his patients(the children). He is a big plus to pediatric dentistry. He's got like a surprisingly relaxed, chill surfer attitude towards things it seems like. I can respect / understand how patience like that would be difficult in this profession for sure, after all, some kids are gonna get anxious or cry no matter how slow or calm you take things. I know I couldn't do it for a living. I'm very glad that we found him for our children. Also, It's nice to see that most of his staff are very understanding of the what it takes to be part of a "Pediatric" setting. I'm sorry to say that I haven't heard very good things about Dr. Reder Sr. though, my kids are seldom seen by him, but he does seem a little more impatient. We brought our one-year-old son to see Dr. Reder for an initial evaluation and cleaning last year. Dr. Reder's practice was recommended by Kaiser, our health insurance program. The staff was very friendly and professional. Our son was seen by the younger dentist, Dr. Seth Reder, I believe. He was great with our son and friendly. He was also responsive to our son's apprehension when having his teeth examined. Dr. Reder examined our son's teeth and recommended doing a cleaning on the next appointment because his teeth were very clean. Dr. Reder answered all of our questions on the care of our son's teeth. We ended up having to find another pediatric dentist because I discovered that Dr. Reder's practice did not accept our dental insurance (from what I understand, they contract with Delta Dental). That was totally my fault and I should have investigated it prior to making an appointment. Although we have only had one experience with Dr. Reder's office, it was a very positive one. read more

My daughter went to Dr. Barry Reder appointment 1/26/22 like always she walked in and when she was done she called her mom to come in Dr. Reder wanted to talk to her. As she goes in he is visibly angry and starts telling her that She is not wearing her bands and that he does not work for free. He demanded she pay $200 NOW before she even left the office, as I the father usually takes her to appointments she was confused and kept asking why she had to pay if she had insurance. Visibly angry and not controlling his emotions in front of my daughter and her mother he stated she should of had her braces off 6 months ago! Then he said " Ill just take the braces off and leave her teeth as they are". Mind you they are the last and only patient that night at 6:30pm so he was tired and not able to control his emotions. I have paid this "Dentist" $7,200 and my daughters teeth are still not straight. 2016/2017 we went to him and told him we wanted our daughter to have braces he recommended we do a Bionator/retainer and we wouldnt need braces as she was so young 8/9 years old. So we paid the $3,200 for Bionator/Retainer 2 years later he states its not working like he would like it and we would have to do braces of course $4,000 more. So we pay the $4,000 18 months into the braces he sees some crowding and has to attach something to her gums to spread her bottom teeth leaving her a gap which she did not have before and he said he would close ther gap towards the end of treatment. When he freaked out on my daughter she went home and cried to me and felt such a way she never wanted to step foot in that place again, I dont blame her. We have since canceled further treatment with him. He stated for the remaining time she was seen it was $200 a visit, so we canceled and will pay someone else to fix her teeth rather than give someone like Dr. Reder who treats patients so rudely and gets visibly angry with young girls our money. If he doesnt enjoy his career anymore he should retire instead of putting his patients through his anger issues. This man has not provided the service I paid, He price gouged me for services I didnt need and treated my Fiance and daughter with so much disrespect he should be ashamed. His receptionist/wife saw the whole thing and looked ashamed of how he handled the situation. This man does not deserve to carry a Dental License. read more

Dr Reder has been my girls' dentist since they were 18 months old. They are 11 and 12 now. He is very frank with them (and me) about the health of their teeth and what they need to do to take care of them. Dr. Reder does this in a way that encourages my daughters rather than shaming them which is important to me. My oldest daughter had a small cavity at her last checkup and was devistated and scared to get a filling. Dr. Reder was super kind and patiet when he did the filling. She didn't even notice when he did the little injections of novocaine which frightened the heck out of me as a child. As we drove home, she kept saying "Dr. Reder is so great! That didn't hurt at all and it wasn't even scary like I thought it would be!" I definitely recommend Dr. Reder if you care about the health of your child's teeth! read more

I was a patient of Dr. Barry Radar's until I was 12 years old. To sum it all up, he pulled 17 teeth from my mouth (4 being permanent), tried practicing orthodontics without a license or education, and in the end my parents had to pay $35,000+ out of pocket to repair my mouth. I am now 21 and still waiting to have my smile back. 2 rounds of braces (only because I needed even MORE space) and 4 dental implants later, a big THANKS to Dr. Radar. And we couldn't sue him because it had been over 2 years since the teeth were pulled. But you can surely bet he was turned into the Dental Association in San Diego! read more

I'm pretty shocked reading some of these reviews. Dr. Reder is my kids new Dentist. I brought my four year old daughter and two year old son here four days ago for cleanings and we had a great experience. He seemed to like my kids and he has grandchildren so I'd have to disagree with the remarks stating he doesn't like kids. Neither of my children needed dental work so I can't comment on that but my husband, kids and I all really liked the office and the entire staff. read more

Nooooooo. If your kid actually needs dentistry this place is terrible. The staff is wonderful, and the office is loaded with toys and video games to entice the kids. The cleanings, x-Rays, everything we had done that was handled by the staff and assistants we were happy with. But when it comes to the actual dentist, I have never experienced such terrible bed side manner from a professional before in my life. On one occasion I brought my then 4 year old daughter in because she had a scratch on her gums that wasn't healing. Dr. Barry Reder gave no warning to what he was going to do to fix it. He cauterized the scratch without any warning to me or my daughter. Not a heads up, like "okay this might hurt a little bit" or walking us through the process or giving any kind of nod to what he was about to do. My daughter was obviously screaming because of this, meanwhile I'm standing there in terror, perplexed as to what the hell was happening. I literally had no idea what was happening. I only knew my daughter was in excruciating pain because of this man. When I confronted him about had just happened I was scolded, and told "this is why I usually have parents wait in the other room." ?!?! WTH?! Are you kidding me?! Why do have a job caring for children when you clearly don't even like them? No need for a second terrible experience. I wouldn't subject any child to sit in his chair, let alone my own. Oh! Can we talk for a sec. about bed side manner in regards to topics of conversation? i.e. Talking about how he doesn't want to be resuscitated were he to become unconscious because of the percent likelihood that he would have resulting brain damage?! And then going into graphic detail about how horrible that would be. And how he wants to get a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) tattoo behind his ear so who ever finds his body will just let him die so he won't have to spend his life drooling on himself, etc., etc. Listen, that may be a great conversation to have with your power of attorney, Barry, but it's not at all what you should be talking about when my 5 year old daughter is sitting in your chair waiting for her teeth to be examined. Talk about morbid and creepy. My recommendation? Don't go here. If you do, you'll just end up on yelp writing something very similar to what I just did. Dr. Reder has cared for my kids for the past almost two decades. One is 19 and the other 14. We have had nothing but the most wonderful experiences. He and his staff treat us all like family and I consider his practice one of our family's treasures. As if that wasn't enough, Dr. Reder is a generous supporter of kids baseball in his community. He also contributes to our warriors. There are many letters of appreciation adorning the walls of the waiting room. This is one of the finest men in our Oceanside city. They love the game room, prizes for the no cavity club, but most importantly they love "Dr. Barry." They wanted to strap her to a board and pull 9 teeth without anesthesia - saying it was OK because she "wouldn't remember it later." OMG, it is terrible. My insurance covered this which is good because I certainly wouldn't pay if they billed me and I will vocalize my experience to each & every parent gathering I attend when asked about pediatric recommendation. read more

I first took my son to Dr. Reders (Sr.)office in the early 90's-before Yelp ever existed. I found his office was clearly designed to attract the attentions & imagination of children, his staff lovely and the facilities clean, well maintained & equipped. Despite that by the time he was done with my son he had been fully terrorized. We both had for that matter. I was concerned that such trauma would create a lifelong unmanageable fear of dentists for my son and it would have if I had not been fortunate enough to discover another dentist in the same office complex. I won't mention him or his practice by name so that no conflict of interest can be inferred but I will say that when my son walked out of the exam room, hand in hand with this new Doctor after his first visit, I knew he would ultimately be fine and could be encouraged to maintain his oral health and not disguise it for fear of visiting the dentist. I have the unique experience of having been a trained dental assistant and understand that working with children is uniquely challenging. So much so that facing that challenge every day is very destructive to ones spirit and emotional well being. Not every one is cut out to do it and even fewer were blessed with the God given talent to do it well from a clinical AND personable standpoint My point is for regular pediatric dentistry I'm sure Dr. Reder(Sr.) is perfectly lovely but when it comes to bedside manner and assisting a child through the difficult process of anything beyond a basic cleaning and oral health instruction he was, in my experience, monstrous. read more

My son went to this dentist for about 10 years. Dr. Barry Reder and Dr. Seth Reder were always amazing. The appointments were timely, the no cavity club was an incentive for good hygiene for my son and the costs were always reasonable. The only reason we can no longer go is because my new work does not cover Dr. Reder for dental coverage. I am seriously considering to switching to a PPO the next open enrollment because the other dentists we have tried overcharged and were awful. I found Dr. Reder because my brother went to him as a child and I remembered it being a place where kids felt comfortable. In addition, I just read a random blog where I found out that Dr. Reder donated some of his services to an orphan from Ukraine who had never seen a dentist before. I could go on and on. I miss taking my kids here and hope to be back with my younger son when we work out our insurance situation. I could not give a higher recommendation for this amazing place! read more

I still loose sleep over the memories of our experience here! I first selected this office because we were new to the area and didn't know our way around too well. It was familiarly located, and seemed to be a "kid-friendly" office. Quite the contrary! If you love your child and don't want them to be scarred for life; do NOT bring them here! My first impression was that the office was old, crowded, and had an odd odor. As soon as we walked down the hallway I understood why. There were numerous reptile tanks with several snakes in them lining the hallway. once you reach the waiting room that advertised its fun and toys, you immediately are disappointed. There are one or two outdated electronic games, and several other toys; all which were dirty and/or non-working. But this wasn't the worst part by far....the Dr. himself had a very eccentric personality and often spoke out of line or inappropriately. I didn't like him and neither did my children, so I would always request to see the son, who was very nice and seemed much more professional and friendly. Then my son needed orthodontic work. Unfortunately, the Sr. Dr. was the only one there with the credentials at the time, so we began procedures with him. HUGE mistake! This Dr. likes to think he can get compliance through fear or ridicule! Soon after we signed the contract and a retainer-like appliance called a Bionater was made. My son wore it faithfully. And, unfortunately one-day a couple of weeks after, it broke in his mouth while he was wearing it! I know this for a fact because I was in the room when he announced to me, "mom, I think something just broke!" We went back to the dentist, and while he agreed to replace it, he let us know that he was very unhappy about it and that we were lucky he hadn't charged us for it twice, AND that he believed it had broken due to carelessness. As we were exiting out of the office, and I was preparing to pay, he followed us into the reception room and approached my son and said, "this is what you will look like if you don't wear your Bionater" , and then made this horrible face at him. He pulled his bottom jaw way back, and stuck his front teeth out and looked real ugly! Well, as you might imagine, my son was horrified and ran out of the office crying...., now I had 2 other smaller children with me and didn't know what to do. The receptionist at the time, (the only nice one ), had compassion and told me , "it's okay, you can pay me later." So I could leave and go comfort my son. He sobbed on the way home and said, I HATE Dr. _ _ _ _, and I NEVER want to go back there! I didn't blame him, and I never wanted to either! The next day I called and spoke to the "person in charge" and told "her" that I was happy to pay for the work they had done, but wished to discontinue treatment at that office. She told me, that unfortunately since I signed the contract, that I would have to pay for the full year and 1/2 of treatment! I said I would not , and only paid for the two months of work we had already had done. Long miserable story later......, they sued us for the remainder and took us to small claims court. Regardless of this, we found a much more suited orthodontist and our son now has the results we had hoped for. It was unfortunate we had to pay twice but would rather do that than expose him or myself to further abuse. There are many choices out there! Do your homework, live and learn! read more

I was 8 years old when I began going to Dr. Reder's for my pediatric dental care. I always had a wonderful experience and looked forward to my trips to the dentist surprisingly enough. I continued to go to Dr. Reder for the next 10 years until I was "too big for the chair" and sadly had to move on to an adult dentist. Over the years I've had many compliments on my dental work from my adult dentists, so I know that the knowledge, and treatment that Dr. Reder passed on to me was above par. Fast forward 30 years, much to my delight Dr. Reder is still practicing and Ive taken my 2 year old son to Dr. Reder for his very first dentist appointment. While not without tears ( my son is embracing his terrible twos) the appointment was as gentle and amiable as possible and my son has already learned that he needs to brush his teeth so he can be a "good role model" for his soon to be born baby sister.
