We were looking for a brunch place and this came up in Yelp. It's in a strip center and has all kinds of fireman memorabilia throughout. Friendly people, great choices and delicious food! One thing we did discover it to get there early if you want the eggs Benedict or corned beef hash as both were sold out by the time we got there. Food was very good and service was great. Bacon was very crispy, just how I like it, eggs cooked perfectly and great selections for toast. One thing I did notice was just how crowded it was. Some would think that one egg, bacon and potatoes couldn't be difficult but I've been to lots of places that overcooked or undercooked a poached egg; mine was perfect. Lots of places throw strips of bacon on a plate; mine were crispy and delicious. And the potatoes--crispy but pillowy inside. My companion had the corned beef hash and grits. He loved his food; even for someone who doesn't care for grits, he raved about them. The experience is similar to an IHOP but less flavorful. The quality of the food and the taste is not good! I had over easy eggs, gluten free blueberry pancakes and bacon. The eggs had no flavor at all & you could tell they weren't organic or free range just the cheapest they could find without salt or pepper. The bacon was not even good. The coffee was horrible it was definitely an instant brand. They do not have any dairy free creamer options or healthy choices. The bill was $70 for 3 people for breakfast. Our family group of 16 went here for a Saturday brunch. I called Barry's Cafe a few hours before we planned to arrive, and was told they would take care of our group. When our group started to arrive, they had already arranged tables to handle our group, and our server was taking care of drink orders as we waited for all of the group. We received excellent service. Service dealt with our group professionally. I ordered the cheeseburger and eggs combo, with sides of grits and tater tots. Liked the burger, and the grits were done right (I detest "runny" grits). Nice bonus for our table is we were served wonderful chocolate chip cookies at the end of the meal. We decided on a whim to make the drive from Knightdale to try Barry's Cafe and we were not disappointed. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. This is a nice diner style restaurant, with counter, booth and table seating. Although they had a server shortage and there were several large parties ahead of us, we were seated within 10 minutes. The food was very delicious. I had the Firehouse (1pancake, 2 sausage patties, 2 eggs and grits) and my husband had the Western Omelette and half serving of French Toast. Staff is very attentive, but I'm pretty sure they thought my friend and I were a lesbian couple, and we got shunted to a 6 person table in the back where we were the least visible in the place. This place was jam packed at 930AM on Sunday and we thought we beat the church crowd, nope, just a ton of people wanting the good food! The place is a lot bigger than I had thought when we walked in, as on the right it's an open kitchen with a diner feel for the stools. Located next to my favorite cheesesteak spot (Anvil's), Barry's Cafe falls into the category of diner and comfort food which is perfect from time to time. With a large menu of American classics, it's hard not to find something to keep you happy. During my lunch visit I went with their 1/2 lb. Papa burger! The food comes out quick and I've got a beauty of a burger. Covered with thick melted cheddar, BBQ sauce and bacon, it's a serious sammich. And good quality ground in-house meat, very tender and flavorful. The fries are nicely done with a light coating, a great and classic accompaniment for the meal. Service at Barry's is darn good, the usual professional waitstaff that you'll find at a diner and they don't disappoint. While I think Barry's menu is a bit basic, I know why this place works so well. Sort of classic and old school with well-prepared basics. We are in the middle of a pandemic but I don't think any of the employees or customers at this "restaurant" know this or respect the law. I was there this morning around 945 am. We sat down, nice staff helped and were tentative.... that's about all I can say about the staff. The lady bringing our food over brought it over and started coughing in her mask. Then went over to the beverage area, took her mask off and began to cough. Came back to our table, without washing her hands, and brought more things for our table, she then ran back to the drink station to cough, again! Meanwhile there were customers coming from the backroom area with no masks on, walked half way through dining area and put mask on. Then we went to pay... the register is over in the cooking area. There were three employees with no masks on! Two of them were cooking!! And just not with their mask down, completely no mask on!!! Behind me were two older gentlemen waiting to pay with no masks on.... I literally couldn't believe this was happening! I then asked the cashier why no one is wearing masks and he just asked my friend if he wanted a copy of his receipt..... I haven't seen any restaurant this bad with COVID laws and practicies!!! Walking into Barry's, even if you don't know the "back story", you'll know this place is all about firemen. Unfortunately it's not the sexy calendar firemen I know you were all thinking about... But you'll still feel the love as you take in the paraphernalia, photos and patches from all over our great state of NC! The prices are spot on for diner. They've got a bar directly in front of an open kitchen for the true diner folks or tables or groups. With all you can drink hot coffee (it's not Counter Culture, but this is not Ashley Christensen place) and a menu full of choice, breakfast and lunch, you won't be disappointed. I felt like I got ripped off. The food was good. I sat down and asked if i wanted coffee and said yes. I briefly looked at the menu and decided on the Firemans special. the waitress Came by and said I had options. Asked me if I wanted the pancake waffle or French toast and I said oh I have options and said waffle sounds good. Then she asked what did I want on the waffles chocolate chips raspberries pecans or something else I said raspberry sounds good. Then she asked me what kind of meat and then hashbrowns or other options. The food came out pretty fast. Food tasted good. Waffle cooked well. Four little sausage links, 2 scrambled eggs. A tiny (half cup or smaller) container of hash browns. I got the bill after one refill of coffee. They charge me nearly $3 for coffee, extra for waffle and raspberry. I asked the cashier about it, and I told her that the waitress asked me about options for the Firemans special and didn't indicate that all of this was extra. She said I can't help it if you didn't read the menu and all of that was extra! Breakfast was $21 for what would be much less elsewhere. Not coming back unless they change prices and practices. If you are looking for a "hole in the wall" local restaurant this is the place. I was craving gluten-free pancakes and found this location (on Yelp of course.) I walked in around 11am on a Saturday morning and they were still packed. You can tell this is a place for the "locals" in the area. My service was kind of slow (party of 1) because I was trying to catch up on work (not the kind of coffee shop vibe though.) The food however was worth it. It is truly southern cooking (but gluten-free!) One of the best gluten-free pancakes I have ever had. The cashier was Barry's wife (I later found out that Barry died earlier this year) and was the sweetest lady. The promote having #barrysfreefridays on Instagram where if you tag your photos you are entered for a free breakfast. They haven't used this feature since 2017. What a neat spot! With the fire department decor, I was always scoping out something new on the walls while we waited for our food. The wait staff was friendly - the overall atmosphere of the restaurant was homey and familiar. Although the food came out quickly, we found our meals to be just average. I believe I saw another post here about the sandwich bread used - that it's store bought, the reviewer saw it coming out of the bag during their visit. And I have to admit, it did taste that way. I had my sandwich on rye bread, and it tasted like it had been sitting out for a while. Chicken salad was good, but nothing out of this world. Fries came out piping hot, though! My boyfriend noted that he had expected a larger portion, so he left feeling not entirely satisfied and just underwhelmed. Went there because it's close to my son's soccer practice. Got in, service wasn't super fast. Ok cool it's Sunday maybe busy although did not see a line waiting outside the restaurant. Got in around 10:50a. In between ordering, waiting and eating our food probably an hour. Then while my kids are enjoying their time and me chatting with their dad with coffee still left in my cup, the hostess came over rudely stated we should pay because they have a 40 minutes wait time now. I looked around there were five empty tables. And I did not see her stating the same to another table of customers who came before us and got their food before us. Then the waitress came again rudely picked up the utensils as to tell us with her action "get out". I totally felt discriminated against. The food was mediocre at best. The service was not good. Paid 12.50 for a cheeseburger platter unworthy of the name. Yes, the patty thick and perhaps fresh, but had no seasoning and very little flavor. The bun was surely from Food Lion next door from the .99 cent bag and the fries were just plain bad. No crisp, just cooked enough to serve steak fries. Perhaps I should have paid the 1.95 upcharge for the seasoned fries? Seriously, $2 for seasoning? Also $2.95 for a fountain drink at a mom and pop restaurant is pushing it. I like it here. They pay attention to gluten free allergies and have gluten free pancakes and bread. The meals aren't huge for the price, but decent. Our waitress was friendly and helpful. They have a nice variety for breakfast. My husband had an omelet and I had a special with a couple eggs, bacon and 2 gluten free pancakes. All the food was very good. I appreciate what Barry's does for the community. It is wonderful when you can spend your money knowing that some is being given back. Bottom line: Will I come back? Yes! Affordable, delicious and simple. One of the better places to eat brunch in Raleigh. Service: decent service, got here around 10 on a Saturday and didn't have to wait. Typical diner feel. Food: Chocolate chip pancakes: usually I'm let down when I get pancakes at a place like this, either too thick, over cooked or just plain bad. Barry's nails the pancake and it was DELICIOUS. I was so impressed at how good it tasted, it was spectacular. Hash browns: these were so good--a must buy recommendation if you visit here. They come in tiny cubes and were perfectly cooked. The bacon was super crispy, which was good. The hash brown was well made. My "over-medium" eggs still had runny white. The chicken fried steak tasted like it was microwaved. Sorry but this place just didnt have great restaurant quality food. They used slice bread you get from the supermarket(i actually watched them pull it out), and everything was plain. The low light was the corn-beef hash which appeared to come right from the can. Was quite poor. Only reason I am giving them 2stars and not 1 is because of the great service.
