Offered to pick up tab for someone who looked like someone I knew. The waitress informed me that it wasn't who I thought. Ambiance: The place feels very classic homey diner. It's not tremendously large, but has a good amount of seating. I suggest sitting on the area to the left when you come in given that the right is close to the kitchen and it can get a bit warm. Food: The food was really delicious, I opted for two eggs over easy, hasbrowns, and sausage links with English muffin. The food was very delicious and not too expensive. Price: The price isn't necessarily a super deal but it's reasonably priced. You can expect to pay about $7-$10 for a full breakfast. My virgin visit to Barry's cafe was ok to me, but not any better. I think I made an ordering mistake by getting the full portion of the biscuits and gravy. While I do like biscuits and gravy, this was just too much of it and it was really filling. The biscuits were too soft too and the gravy maybe not quite thick enough. (I actually like Bojangles version better). If I could get a do-over I would go with a half portion and something else. Service at Barry's was very good, and I think Barry's Cafe has some great breakfast/brunch/brinner options. I just didn't choose the best option this time. Next time, I will probably get the eggs benedict (only available on the weekends) or the chicken fried steak. read more

Yummy! This is definitely a "go-to" diner in my opinion. Breakfast is served here all day and the non-breakfast menu is served starting at 11am. I have never had the opportunity to come here for lunch but, I can say that the breakfast here is always delicious. Do yourself a favor and try it. You won't be disappointed (at least I think you won't be) ;-) The only issue I have is with the grits. I love grits like any other typical southern gal and while they are the perfect consistency, I find myself having to add extra butter, salt and pepper to them. This place is great and i was very impressed by all the firefighter support and art on the walls. These guys serve traditional old school breakfasts but they do it right. There are few local breakfast and lunch places which are not chains that have the run of the mill commercial look in all of them. This cafe stands out with its country look and old times feel. It has a very family touch to it and I noticed when we arrived that this cafe was opened in 1992. Old but still popular!! We ordered the veggie omelette with hash browns, apple sauce and the egg sandwich. The omelette was perfectly cooked with melt in the mouth texture. The hash browns were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the perfect texture. The egg sandwich was perfect with the egg well done just like we asked. Totally yum breakfast !! Great place for a weekday lunch! My coworkers like to order breakfast food (eg. omelettes) for lunch here. It was already pretty crowded when we got there around 12pm so our waitress seemed kind of rushed when we requested certain things like straws for our cups. I ordered the Reuben sandwich ($9.49) which comes with a side: chips, coleslaw, or applesauce. I opted for coleslaw, which went well with my sandwich. My Reuben was chock full of thick corned beef slices, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and dressing on rye bread. Yum!! The portion size was huge and I saved 1/3 of it for dinner later. Every meal comes with a free just-baked cookie, which I almost declined until my friends kindly informed me that the cookie is FREE, why would you not accept it?! read more

Recently moved to Raleigh and glad to have found Barry's! Walked in and sat up at the bar right behind the cash register. Good waitressing means that you're aware of the surroundings and even if you can't actually stop to take an order, letting a guest know you acknowledge them so they aren't left wondering what's going on is a big deal! Especially important when I done solo... Solo diners can be tricky. Got my coffee right away, and it was yum (not watered down like someone else has mentioned). I ordered the veggie omelet with hash browns and biscuits. As I waited, I watched the guys on the line do their thing. Some people might not like to watch it so up close, but I work in the business and get a kick out of it. These guys were doing their thing with a mix of lunch and breakfast items, from Philly sandwiches, to big salads, to omelets like mine! Coffee kept topped up, and food took all of maybe 7 or 8 minutes to arrive!! Huuuuge veggie omelet with mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, peppers, and cheddar cheese in and on top of the eggs! The hash browns were perfectly crispy on the outside, but soft and potatoey on the inside... Just right! The biscuits were so fresh, they nearly fell apart while putting on my butter and jelly. A few bites into everything, and I knew I'd been won over! Toward the end, my sweet waitress brought over a fresh chocolate chip cookie "on the house." Yummm! I have loved this cafe for years and enjoyed my order on a recent trip. We came so my family member could have gluten free options, which were delicious but unfortunately both her eggs and pancakes were full of eggshells. When we informed the restaurant, they comped the food and remade it to go at our request. Unfortunately, the remade pancakes also contained eggshells. I hope this is addressed soon so others don't experience this and an otherwise wonderful cafe can thrive! read more

I found myself in need of breakfast at noon on Sunday. the many positive reviews on Yelp landed me at Barry's Cafe. The place was packed! I knew that was a pretty good sign of things to come. The whole place is decked out in a Fire-Station memorabilia theme. I was promptly seated at a booth near the back of the restaurant. I ordered the Cheeseburger and Eggs. I thought that was a most unusual pairing of food, and was willing to try something a little different. The cheese burger was served without a bun (which I initially found to be odd) but I dug in anyways. Eggs were perfect, hash browns very respectable, and the cheeseburger (again, no bun) was a welcome change. I had never ate a cheeseburger minus the bun! All the servers (I didn't have just one since I sat at the counter) were very attentive and quick. 5 stars for service. On food - I ordered the famous baby burger with a side of (Motts) applesauce. We were in Raleigh for a horse show at the Hunt Horse Complex. We were tired of the powdered eggs at the Comfort Inn Arena. Barry's was quite the find and only 10 minutes from the State a Fairgrounds area. The decor was all fireman starting with the old fire engine in the parking lot. The restaurant participates in a program that feeds first responders on emergency calls. The food was delicious and the portions manly! Barry needs to work on his pricing strategy. Food was just okay: not super tasty & not a lot for the cost. Service, however, was some of the best in the area. For a family of 4 (2 adults 2 kids), our lunch cost $40, before tip. Close to 50 after tip. We both got a chicken sandwich and my sons ate off the kids menu. I would have expected more like 35 after tip. We have actually spent less at Carolina Ale House for dinner after ordering alcoholic beverages! The biggest surprise was soft drinks costing $2.95 each - most places charge $1.95. Unfortunately, we won't be back any time soon because the food & ambiance was not worth the price we paid. OK, I have to revise my review. I usually always get fruit and an egg biscuit with gravy, something of that nature. Today I went back, and I just had to add another star! Today my partner and I both tried the country fried steak with two eggs, and it was phenomenal. We were looking for a quick breakfast, and decided to try Barry's. Fortunately we were there early as it quickly got crowded shortly after we arrived. Solid breakfast - biscuits were the highlight of the meal ; perfect consistency. Eggs were made fresh with a nice buttery flavor. Lots of bacon came with our platter - thin and crispy which just begs to be in a sandwich. Home fries are more on the french fry side than the skillet variety we like in the morning but still good.
