Candidly, I don't eat Nepalese food very often, save for the occasional momo, so unsure if I'm a qualified reviewer in this domain. Regardless, Base Camp was awesome and a solid restaurant in the Mission. My friend and I arrived impromptu on a Monday night, surprised to see a crowded house; luckily, we snagged a table in the corner. We ordered the tandoori octopus, pork belly bhutwa, and goat curry which were all good. The tandoori octopus was fork tender and delicately spiced. The pork belly had vaguely Indian and vaguely Chinese flavor profiles, without lending itself to either side of the fulcrum. Kinda masala mixed with a bit of mala, which makes sense given Nepal's location. The goat curry was the only dish, albeit good, that didn't quite stand out for me. Service is also incredible. Every time a dish arrived, servers graciously explained how best to indulge, a welcomed gesture for this Nepalese novice. Would come again! read more

I have now had food from Base Camp three times, so I feel comfortable finally writing this review. First of all, I have to say the pork chow mein is the best chow mein I have ever had in the City and perhaps just ever in general. Genuinely. Absolutely perfect. Delicious, well seasoned and with lots of pork. I had to restrain myself from wolfing it all down in one sitting! That said, I also tried one of the curry dishes my first time, and was thoroughly unimpressed. It was bland and I wish it had more spice and texture. I will definitely enjoy the noodle dishes again in the future though! Surprised by how good this place was, I think it's definitely the best Nepali restaurant I've had here in the US. Starting with the chicken momo, they were really tasty esp with the chilli powder on the side. Also got the veggie chow mein which was pretty decent, not salty like many other places end up being. The cashew chicken curry was tasty, along with the goat curry. As for the breads, garlic naan was good but wow this was my first time trying Tingmo and I loved it (gotta have that over the naan). Finally got around to trying Base Camp and I'm glad I did. Showed up around noon on a Sunday and it wasn't busy at all, so we were seated right away. We weren't super hungry so we decided to keep it light and just do appetizers. We ordered the pork momo, roti, pork belly bhutuwa and tandoori octopus and honestly everything was amazing. The standouts were the pork belly bhutuwa and the tandoori octopus. The pork belly was incredibly juicy and just the right portion for two people. The octopus was prepared perfectly, tender with no rubberiness at all which is always the make or break on that dish. Highly recommend all of the items we tried! The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is that they were out of the chatamari and chicken momos when we visited, which was a little disappointing since those were on my must try list. I had lunch with my two adult daughters on a day out in the Mission district. Base Camp serves Nepalese cuisine. We really enjoyed it. I let my daughters do the ordering as we all like to share dishes. We tried the watermelon feta salad, the chicken momo and the vegetable momo (dumpling-like), and naan for small plates. All were very good. Next we had two curries: the cashew curry with chicken and the pumpkin curry. Both were unique, with interesting spices and flavors and very enjoyable. It was a nice change of pace meal from what I can get back home. The service was friendly and efficient. The space is in a row house type building on the corner and has wood floors and furniture. We did a walk in and were able to sit in the parklet - unfortunately the heaters weren't working so it was a little cold, but overall service was quick and we were in and out within and hour I would say? Had dinner here on Friday at 5:45pm. They only had outside seating available on a covered patio. They have heat lamps which is nice when it's cold. Definitely recommend making a reservation if you want to sit inside. We got the tandoori octopus, the pork momos, chow mein with pork, the lamb matar, and a side of garlic naan. Man this place is a HIDDEN GEM. AMAZING Nepalese food. Beautiful interior too. Feels very welcoming and comfortable. Came two weekends in a row and here's what I ordered: Kale Chaat - Oh you are missing out if you don't try this. Crispy fried kale mixed with a balsamic sauce, creamy yogurt (I think) sauce, mint and crispy topping. It's the perfect balance of sour, creamy, sweet, tangy and all the textures. The dish is served cold and just feels so light. The mix of flavors is super unique and honestly I save some to eat with my curry just because it adds that element of lightness that compliments the other dishes really well. Pork Momos - I'm chinese so this reminds me of a xiaolongbao but without the soup in the middle and instead with a delicious curry flavor. Perfectly cooked skin with plenty of meat filling. Really yummy! Pork Belly Bhutuwa - Giant pieces of juicy pork belly in like a spiced oil and it comes with a tomato salsa-like sauce that balances out that heavy garam masala. Was delicious but not as impressive as the kale chaat. Butter Chicken - This was recommended by the server and I'm so glad we went with this! Probably the best butter chicken I've ever had. Just a perfect mix of savory and sweetness, which made this one taste lighter than the other ones I've had. I love that they go the extra mile and use dark meat chicken and grill it before adding to the curry, so you get the smokey charred flavor as well. I have a love-hate relationship with Base Camp. The vibe is cute, and they got outdoor seating with heaters. We've taken friends here and they loved it. I just have personal beef with the wait time. The service is okay. I've been here so many times but at least 2 times we waited over 45 minutes for some momos. I feel like the server forgot to check with the kitchen and then told us they were out of chicken momos 20 minutes into waiting and then took extra 20 mins to get the momos. Were the momos fire, yes... but omg when you're hangry and craving momos this is not the place. We did come another time, and the wait was reasonable, but I just have been disappointed 1 too many times. Overall, ngl the food is pretty good, could be spicier but it is solid flavor wise. Was looking for a quick dinner before my pottery class across the street, and stopped into Base Camp! It quickly got busy after 5:30/6:00PM so I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time. The chicken momos were delectable and juicy, plus their table chili oil is SPICYYY. Exactly what I wanted on a windy SF evening. The fish curry was one of the best I've ever had. Great assortment of seafoods inside and nice and light. It definitely wasn't cream or coconut milk based. Definitely pair it with a side of the garlic naan. I obsessively sing Base Camp's praises and crave their food -- especially the kale chaat -- every other month. Have been here 5 or 6 times with friends and the food never disappoints. The inside is decorated with homey Himalayan ware, and the menu has something for everyone. My go-to dishes are the kale chaat (I have never eaten such crispy, crunchy, creamy goodness) and I love the butter chicken curry and goat curry with a side of garlic naan (they do a great job with the crisp-to-poofy dough ratio). Service is pretty good, though ofc waits are a little longer when it's super busy. The only downside is that it gets pretty crowded so if you want a guaranteed less than 15 min wait a reservation is the way to go. Tucked in a quieter part of the Mission though so when the weather is good the wait experience isn't awful. Can't wait till i'm back again! read more

It seemed to be an overloaded circuit. We assumed this was a known issue and were disappointed we weren't told about it before sitting down. I would maybe avoid the Pork Belly Bhutuwa next time, as it was a bit basic and I didn't love the Lamb Chow Mein. The noodle texture is a bit crunchier and drier than what I'm used to so maybe that's personal preference. Their Paneer Ra Matar was my favorite, along with their chilli oil/flakes! Fire!! I went to base camp for the first time for a dinner and safe to say it was not a disappointment. I really enjoy the depth of flavors as well as variety on the menu. The service was pretty attentive, even though it was almost an hour close to closing, we were taken care of , and the service was efficient. The kale chaat was probably my favorite dish, the combination of crunchy, sweet, sour, and tangy, sooo flavorful . I don't remember which curry it was, but it was extremely flavorful paired with the rice . I also really enjoyed the garlic, naan and roti as well because I love carbs lol. The Momo's were also delicious, I just wish it came with more than four. The ambience is intimate and was packed on a Thursday night. first timer! came to base camp with the company. i enjoy Nepali food & this was authentic. we all got the mango lassi or another variation of iced tea (i believe tamarind?) the momos were average just a bit small. Only came with 4 pieces. if you're doing family style you'd have to order a lot. I only had the chicken and they were decent but not the best i've had. service was solid, most things came all at once. they took our reservation last minute for a large group of almost 20 people. it was easy to share dishes but i recommend getting 2 of each and deciding which dish to repeat. our favorite was the Shapta. it was amazing. A majority of our group favored that, we chose Tofu as protein. I'm picky with Tofu and they made it taste flavorful. I also liked the lentil daal and kale chaat was like nothing I've had before. It's cute in here, just a little small space! Please order the Shapta :) I couldn't remember the other dishes, most were yummy. I do think the Garlic naan needs more garlic to my liking. It was a little oily, but it had a lot of flavor and had a slightly different texture and taste than Chinese chow mein. I could probably order that one dish alone for a quick and easy lunch. The Butter Chicken was incredible. It was very creamy and had great flavor. Dipping our garlic naan into the sauce was perfect! There are so many other dishes I want to try. For anyone wondering, one of my top fav cuisines is Nepalese food. Something about the combined Chinese/Indian flavors really just blows my mind. After unfortunately not getting a reservation online for a Friday night, my friend and I decided to just walk in and see what happens. We luckily got seated within 5 minutes. We got the 4 piece vegetable momo to share. The momos were really juicy and flavorful, but my favorite part was the punch chutney for dipping. However, the chicken chow mein blew me out of the water. I still like the food here but recently they have made some changes. Thats natural as a business gets older but my family had dinner last night and some of the changes will affect me going back. My sister said the food made her sick last night, which is a huge issue. The cashew curry with paneer specifically is what she had. She said it tasted more watery this time( we both had this over 3 times previously). The chowmein had many burnt pieces of tofu. Service was good, theres no host area so when you walk in, no one greets you bc they are all busy serving. They did accommodate us before our reservation, so that's appreciated! I went to Base Camp on a Sunday around 1 PM and was seated immediately. I don't have too many experiences eating Nepalese food but this restaurant was amazing and I'd highly recommend for groups that have mixed vegetarian, vegan, or meat eating people. Food (5/5): I went with my friend, and we ordered three dishes to share. We ordered the vegetarian Momos, the shrimp chow mein, and the pumpkin curry. I also ordered a chai. My favorite dish of them all was the chow mein because it wasn't too greasy, and there were many textures in the dish that made it fun to eat. In total it came to about $35 per person which is a bit steep for lunch, but I thought it was worth it. Service (5/5): I have a nut and peanut allergy and mentioned it to the waiter, and he was very attentive and made sure that there were no nuts in the dishes that I ordered. He even followed up and made sure that I wasn't allergic to sesame seeds because some dishes have sesame oil. He came by the table often to check up on us, which was appreciated. Ambiance (5/5): The restaurant furniture and decor were beautiful and made for a very nice lunch. I've been a loyal fan of this restaurant and always order the Kale Chat, it's my favorite. But I recently ordered via DoorDash and was extremely disappointed. The portion was tiny, and the kale was so broken and sparse it looked like scraps. Compare this to the bottom of a cool ranch Doritos bag and AI wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Compared to the in-store dish (which is generous and fresh), this felt like an afterthought. For $14, I expected better quality and consistency.
