After a couple of weeks of upheaval (change of owners, new pizziola) Basil is still hands down one of the best in the borough. Small changes in sauce and crust have not hurt and for regular meals, everything is still the same. It's great that we haven't lost a valuable neighborhood place. read more

If you are looking for NY style greasy "slice" pizza, this is not for you...but if you are looking for an gourmet pie with fresh ingredients and brick oven crust-look no further! This is my favorite place! Their mussels in San Marzano tomato sauce appetizer is the best I've ever had. No one else can compare... And I've been trying to find something comparable in Long Island where I moved to six months ago. Now I travel the 25 miles every couple of weeks for their mussels, but especially for the sauce, when I get the urge. Not only is the food good but have always been pleased with the service. I don't live in the area but I was given the recommendation to come to Basil Brick Oven a month ago & let me tell you I've been back 5 times. It is definitely worth the 30 minute drive. Mussels are my absolute favorite shellfish. My cousin and I shared the mussels appetizer to start, it was absolutely delicious. The sauce was fresh and it was served with crispy foccacia bread. I was licking the bowl! HIGHLY RECOMMEND. Then we ordered a bianca pie and a regina margarita to share. Both pies were cooked to absolute perfection. The cheese was soft and gooey and the crust was perfectly crisp, but not burnt. Our severed suggested a great bottle of red wine that went great with our meal. For dessert, we ordered the homemade Tiramisu. It was amazing. Probably the best I've ever had. It was light, airy and fluffy. Made to perfection. Complements to the chef! So excited to hear they are expanding, can't wait to come with a much larger group! Based on the quality and amount of food price point is right on!!! My friend and I ate at Basil Brick Oven Pizza tonight. We had the caprese salad which was pretty good: tomatoes, basil and fresh mozzarella with balsamic vinegar. Pretty simple, hard to mess up. My friend had the penne alla basil which was good but nothing extraordinary. I had the pizza margherita which was ok. There was too much tomato sauce and the fresh mozzarella was cut a little too thick for my liking. This weighed the pizza down so the dough wasn't as crispy as I'd like. It also didn't have as much basil as I'd like. I would give the food 3 stars because it was just ok but I gave it 4 stars because of the service. The staff was very accommodating and pleasant. They gave me extra basil for my pizza (picked fresh from their basil plant) and also gave us a free tiramisui dessert at the end of our meal. It's a tiny restaurant (about 7 tables) so I wouldn't recommend it for a large group. Also, as other reviewers mentioned, they don't service any liquor. read more

Their pizza list is extensive and they have great flavor combinations to satisfy anyone, and their panini are huge and delicious. But my favorite has to be their pastas. When we first started going there, they only had about 4 pasta options on the menu, but every one was so fresh! They've since expanded the options, but my favorite still stands as their signature Penne alla Basil. Shiitake, Prosciutto...perfection! We always get the tiramisu to finish, it's one of the best I've ever had. And we've also had a great experience with their delivery. Read about this place in Time Out. Very near where we live, so we went for lunch. The pizza is really excellent. Classic wood-fired crispy chewy charred crust. All ingredients (including cheese!) prepared in-house. They are expanding, so things must be going well for them. Friendly knowledgable service. My only complaint is the decor, which is kinda cheap. This is big problem in Astoria - great food served in crappy rooms. (Sweet Afton, Astor Bake Shop aside.) Until Astoria restauranteurs fix this, they will struggle to get foodies to take them seriously. This is ultimately trivial as the food should be the most important thing, but it does count for something, especially if you are trying to compete with Manhattan and Brooklyn. read more

Basil is so clean that all I smelled while I was there was cleaning fluid. I didn't even smell the pizza that I ate. Be prepared if you go in the winter time because the place isn't that warm and the bathroom is like a refrigerator (nice and clean though!). I had the Mare Monti pizza and unlike the menu says, there was no asparagus or mushroom on the pizza :( I didn't remember until after the dinner otherwise I should have said something. Otherwise, the dinner was good -- I was not a fan of the olive spread, which was really salty, but the bread was warm with a crispy crust. The shrimp on the pizza was cooked to perfection with that slightly crisp texture and the pizza was also cooked well, not burnt and with a delicious crust. One of the few mussels on the pizza wasn't opened, so I couldn't eat it. I just wish there was more than just a few droppings of mozzarella cheese and more toppings! The staff were incredibly attentive and friendly though and I would go for the freshly made beef meatball pizza next time instead. read more
