Was visiting the beautiful city of Queens and thought it was a great idea to visit Astoria Park where you can view the beautiful NYC skyline. When you're anywhere in the city you know you have to look for a really good pizza spot where you can indulge and enjoy the scenery one slice at a time. First time stopping by to Zio Pepe and I was amazed by their selection of pizzas and quality. The service was great, especially when the gentleman behind the counter was making a fresh pie as we entered and you know you're from NYC when you ask for a fresh slice. Everything was amazing. Zio Pepe also offers their famous pizza sauce you can take home and create your own recipes. Togo order Great flavor on the pizza on the salty side and sauce was perfectly sweet. The texture was a bit soggy but that may be because it was not eaten fresh. The pizzeria isn't huge but still has a few tables inside and a couple outside. The folks are friendly, especially the guys making the food. I'm partial to Zio Pepe's tomato sauce and crunchy crust. I called for delivery and the guy recorded the address wrong so the delivery man had to make an extra stop and the pizza wasn't in an insulated bag (in 40° weather) so it came cold. I'm only four blocks from this place so there's no excuse for a cold pie. I called expecting an apology for the miscommunication and an attempt to fix the situation but he didn't care in the slightest. He attempted to hang up so I had to ask if I could come pick up a new one. When I got there, he argued with and gaslit me, saying that I told him the wrong address instead of admitting we simply had a miscommunication. I asked if this is how he thinks a business should be run and he said he wasn't the owner, he just works there so he truly doesn't care. When I got the replacement pie, the box wasn't even hot. It was supposedly straight from the oven. I hadn't even taken it outside yet! For a $30 fresh pie, I expect a hot pizza. My go to place for a classic NY slice in the hood. They have a special for two slices and soda. Ordered a pepperoni slice and a grand ma and it came to about $7. Beats McDonalds any day The slice has a thin crust with a good sauce to cheese ratio. It's not too salty and you won't feel too heavy after eating. The pepperoni wheels are solid too. It takes about an hour for delivery, but the food arrives hot and fresh. The delivery drivers are always very pleasant. I'd say the price runs a dollar or two more than some other places in the area, but the quality is well worth it. I gone to zio Pepe several times as I work in the neighborhood and it's convenient. The food is good especially their chicken parm hero with vodka sauce, but, I'm doing keto, so I asked for grilled chicken parm without the bread. First couple of times they listened and everything was great! It was my new go to meal when I didn't bring lunch. But then, we called in a pick up order exactly how I asked for it before. It wasn't until we got beach to work and ready to eat that I noticed it was a grilled chicken parm with red sauce and spaghetti... disappointingly, I ate around the pasta because I don't have the time to go back. I decided to go there and place my order again and this time I got grilled chicken parm with red sauce no bread no pasta. Still disappointed because the vodka sauce is the main reason for going there. Third times a charm right? NOPE! I went this afternoon and placed my order same as usual. I let them know that I placed the same order twice before and got red sauce and please make sure it's vodka sauce. I even order one for my partner who is also on the keto diet. First time leaving a review on anything ever. Ordered mozzarella sticks, they came half unbreaded. I've gotten mozzarella sticks delivered from a multitude of different restaurants over the years so I understand things happen in travel or they can get soggy but this did not seem like that at all. I called the restaurant and they put me on with the manager who was rude and defensive and kept talking over me to tell me that he doesn't do refunds and that he needs to send someone to come get the food so he can show the drivers?? Because if they messed up it comes out of their pay??? I don't know why he was telling me this. I told him it was not the driver and it was the way they were made. This place recently opened up where the Greek restaurant used to be on 23rd Ave. across from Rockies bar. You might totally miss it unless you've read the yelp review or you live in the neighborhood. The first time I stopped in I honestly wasn't expecting that much but I think it's the best pizza we have in Astoria since Michelangelo's closed down. I know a lot of people really love the brick oven pizza at that place over on Broadway, I was never impressed. This place is like old fashioned New York pizza and it's not stupid expensive!! My favorite is the chicken bacon ranch and I pretty much can't go a week without having at least a couple slices. Plus the garlic knots are also delicious. They have a bunch of other stuff on their menu like pastas and I keep telling myself I'll try but I'm just addicted to the bacon ranch pizza what can I say. If you're in the neighborhood or if you feel like ordering definitely try them out and they deliver slices as well. The staff are all really nice too.
