Basil Thai is a very fine family owned restaurant that serves some delicious takes on Thai food. I recently had my third visit to this restaurant and it still does not disappoint. I had always seen the restaurant in a nondescript Arcadia strip mall for years. It's located in the vast chain restaurant wasteland of East Arcadia / West Monrovia, populated by the likes of Souplantation and BJs. I didn't venture in until a read a recommendation from a highly respected LA food guide. I certainly am glad that I took their advice. The dining area is somewhat odd, and a bit cramped, but don't let that be a distraction. The focus here really is the cooking. I cannot lay claim to knowing what authentic Thai cuisine is, but I do know that they flavors in each dish are very fresh and clean, without being overly salted, greasy, or fussy. Pad Thai is simple and straightforward, without the cloying sweetness that often muddles other places. A sauteed catfish special dish was marinated in a wonderfully spicy sauce that still let the flavor of the fish come clearly through the dish. In addition to all the wonderful flavors, service is provided by the incredibly gracious family running the restaurant. They treat every customer like a member of the family, and on each of my visits for dinner, I noticed many return customers as the owners greeted them by name. That's always a positive sign. Here's what we ordered: -Deep Fried Spring Rolls: Tasty, but have had better. The dipping sauce was bland. You get 4 very small rolls for $6.25+ tax = overpriced! -Pad Thai With Chicken: They used non-traditional noodles. Flavor was bland. Did not finish eating this dish. -Green Curry With Chicken and A Side of White Rice*: Tasty and fresh. -Iced Tea: Taste was spot on! I stopped in here for a quick dinner after the gym as was disappointed because I had read a lot of good reviews on here. One poster even said they drove here all the way from Santa Monica for the food. WHY??? I ordered the pad thai (which I think it the best litmus for a thai place), and it tasted like it was store bought, or came from a TV dinner. It was very bland and the flavors were muddy, not spicy and bright like a good pad thai. Service was fine but the food, even if it were higher quality, was overpriced. My date got the lettuce wraps, which, are Way easier to do well than pad thai is and still... definitely lacking on flavor. It was really just cooked meet in some lettuce. Haven't had Thai I'm a while, came across this place the other day. Not much to the decor, plan and simple. My baseline dish for any new Thai restaurant is Pang with shrimp, which I ordered with a side of rice and a glad of water. To my surprise, that's all I got, shrimp with the curry sauce. I've been going to this restaurant for years, food had generally been delicious. My mother and I went anticipating a great meal, we ordered Tom yum soup, yellow curry, pha Thai, pineapple rice. The soup was delicious everything else was awful. Potatoes were not cook in the curry, rice was hard and the pha Thai not good either. Very disappointed. Last Sunday I started out to go Soup Plantation w/ my family ( that's where we go if cant decide where to go :). However, ended up in Basil Thai Cooking. I loved this little family owned eatery since 1991. Yep! The warm and friendly server who happens to be the son shared some history about Basil Thai. We ordered Veggie spring rolls, green curry (chicken) , and one dish with chicken and shrimp (somewhat spicy and yum). As I am a fan of simplicity I loved the simple interior. Finally the Chef who is the father walked to our table and shared some humor w/ my 9 yr old daughter who was somewhat unhappy that evening. This cheered her up. By far the best thai food in the area! Owned by the nicest family. Prices are affordable. Food is absolutely delicious. They are very efficient - orders are ready for take-out in less than 15 minutes! The restaurant is cute and good for small groups or couples but not for bigger parties. We usually get take-out. Was visiting my boyfriend in Arcadia and we were craving thai food for late dinner. We got to the restaurant about 5 minutes after it closed and were about to be super disappointed when the owner offered to make us a togo order anyway! I have 4 young kids and it's hard to find a restaurant that I would want to go to. But this place is one of very few that if want to go to. Bottom line: great food, good value!! First night, we ordered Yellow curry, broccoli beef, pad Thai, spring roll, and a couple of other items. Adults liked them, and kids loved them. Next night, we ordered wonton soup, chicken with peppers, yellow curry, pad woo sen with a large serving of rice. One adult and 4 kids who eat half portions usually, I thought I'd have a left over food to take home. Those are good portion servings. My 6 year old was eating eating and kept eating the wonton soup, yelling at me "YOU NEED TO ASK HOW TO MAKE THIS SO WE CAN EAT THIS AT HOME!!" Well it really was good. He ate half of the large pot of wonton soup, then moved onto peppered chicken, while my 10 year old was helping himself to 3rd serving of yellow curry. My 6 year old kept on going with peppered chicken until my toddler was so done being in a restaurant. By the way she ate bunch of the glass noodles and the soup. My 8 year old was quietly loving the food. On my way back home in the car, my kids were arguing what is their best favorite restaurant. One kid said our favorite burger joint but others voted for Thai Basil Cooking. Yes we are coming back. Oh once we got home, the little bit of rice I had brought home was immediately eaten by my kids with the chicken and curry. Another local place to eat thanks to yelp. The food was delicious. Tried the pork with eggplant and the chicken with cashews. Prices are reasonable: 2 dishes + 1 beer came to a total of about $21. Greeted with a genuine smile when we came in, and watched as the (mom, as the other reviews mention) hostess chatted it up with other guests (regulars it looked like). We had never been to Arcadia before and were unfamiliar with the area, but our one year old loves Thai food so we decided to give it a try. We're happy we did! I leaving this review reluctantly because I wish small business like this one the best but this tom kha gai soup was the worst I've ever had. It actually made me mad how bad it was. Not a hint of coconut and it is supposed to be a coconut based soup. I hope the owner sees this and puts the effort to make this soup better. I wasn't a believer in Thai food until I came across Basil Thai Cooking, when after one taste of their sinfully good Tom-Yum soup, I had an a-hahhh moment... so this is what goooood Thai food tastes like! It's served in this cool pot with the flame going (in the middle compartment) & you get to serve yourself all that yummy goodness that you wish would never end. But you're in luck because it's a big pot of happiness enough for seconds for 4 people. Loaded with fresh veggies (mushrooms, zucchini, carrots, broccoli, bamboo shoots), the lemongrassy/level 3 spicy broth is pure bliss to my taste buds. You can have it with tofu or shrimp and if you're a vegetarian, just ask Molly, the friendly server/owner, to have it made with a clear broth... they will happily customize any dish to your preference. You also have to try the Papaya Salad which is made with unripe papaya so it won't be the coralish color you'd expect. Nor will it be sweet & fleshy but rather crunchy, long shreds of the pale green fruit with a pickled bite to it. It's tossed with thin sliced green beans, a couple of tomatoes slices & bits of peanuts & garlic with a lemony dressing. Sooo yum! As a main dish, my favorite so far is their Gang-Keow-Jay- green curry base with tofu & veggies but I've also had the red curry based version & it's equally good. Go with the green if you live on the spicy side. ;) I love curry type dishes atop brown rice but of course their noodles are rockin' good too. My friends are loyal to their Pad Kee-Mao spicy noodles and Pad-Woon Sen vermicelli noodles are my fave. I'm actually not a vegetarian & have yet to try a meaty dish here but I did hear the guys next to us raving about their Crying Tiger beef dish.. next time! I have tried their Pad Thai with shrimp though & it was predictably delish. Wash it all down with a tall glass of Thai Iced Coffee & go home happy & satisfied. I will not order from here again. Chicken fried rice, rice is mushy. Chicken no real taste. Not bad, but I'm sure you can find better.

This is my second time here in a week and although the food is not bad, the portions are very small and there is hardly any meat in the dishes. I could count to number of pieces of chicken, single digits, in my Pad Prik King, and the same went for my beef dish. I will not be returning as after spending $20+, I am still hungry. Wack!! I should have fasted, well I kind of did! All the wrong things happened with this place. Ordered online through Eat 24. Order goes in at 11:40am! 45-60 min wait ANTICIPATED. Wrong! 12:50 and still no food? I call to ask and I am told they will be here in 15 minutes?! Geezuz! I tell the lady on the phone "that is about 1 hour and 30 minutes for food!"? not cool!... I ask if they can discount and they say no but i will get an additional thai iced tea. I am not pleased so the woman asks if I want to cancel? to which I laugh and say "no i still have to eat" and I have been waiting & hang up. It gets better!! ....1:30 and no food?! I call again and the same lady says she cancelled the order! oh F&^*%! I'm upset now and asking for the manager which I think I hear yellin out random stuff to her in the back round anyhow... so now she says they are coming right away!! ?? During this time, I chatted with Darell at Eat24 and he made a call to them and got 15% discounted plus they (lied about) & said I was getting free pad thai. Finally at god knows what time! maybe like 215pm? my food gets here, cold and all. The best, not so best, part was the freaking Boba was raw!!! That $hit needed to be cooked longer people!!! & there was only 1 drink... never even threw in the free 2nd one. One last stupid detail? they did not put in any napkins. Came here for dinner after IMATS, super long day and we needed our tummy's to be satisfied now so we decided to grab some Thai food. We came here to this cute mom and pops modern joint and ordered up! The portions were a bit small compared to other thai places but the food was good. The pineapple fried rice was a bit too salty but what made up for that was the mango and sticky rice. Best way to end the night ever!!! read more
