I contacted the baker about a Blippi and Meekah-themed 6-inch cake. The quote was $145 for the cake plus $25 for an edible image, for a $170 total before the amount later identified as tax. Free pickup was offered. I was dealing with several important things at the time and did not respond to the initial quote immediately, but I prepared my confirmation on September 12, the date given to decide and contacted the baker on September 13 to confirm the order. She accepted the order and provided payment instructions. I do not use Zelle or Venmo, but I have Cash App and was prepared to either pay cash in full in person or the deposit that way. Before sending the deposit, I asked one simple question: why was the total $186.63, including $16.63 in tax, when the quoted cake and edible image totaled $170? I was simply asking for clarification before paying. I asked because my understanding of California Department of Tax and Fee Administration guidance is that a whole cake sold to go is generally not subject to sales tax. I wanted to understand the basis for the additional charge before making my payment. I was not refusing to pay; I was asking for clarification. Instead of answering the question, the baker abruptly canceled my order. I attempted to call to discuss it directly, but was sent to her voicemail mailbox which was full and I could not leave a message. Afterward, she explained that she had become uneasy about the order and said she was canceling for the best. ‍ She also characterized my statement that I would accurately review my experience on Yelp as a threat of a bad review, which is not something I would do. I would never threaten anyone. I was explaining that I would give an honest account of my actual customer experience which is what Yelp is all about. What disappointed me most was that the order had been accepted and confirmed, yet asking a question about a charge resulted in the order being canceled rather than the charge being explained. I am a disabled grandmother and was trying to arrange a special birthday cake for my granddaughter's party. I would have preferred a simple answer to my question and a completed order. Based on my experience, I would not order from this business again. but instead I will go to back ordering from Nothin Bundt or Susies Cakes and just order the toppers online, that way I know what I am getting with no hidden fees.

She was patient while I tried some of the flavors I had curiosity around but had never seen in the stores. At the time the double strawberry sees collab flavor was new, tried it and liked it. The pbj needed strawberry jelly instead. There was other flavors I hadn't heard of. It was nice to be at the helm of the flavors lol. I did a sampler flight and got the strawberry sees one to go home. I will say, it's $13 in store, and a while back WF had a kick ass sale and I paid $4! But they didn't have all the flavors! So I suppose it's worth it lol. I came again w a friend. I wanted to do the corn and berries and try the berry crumble. I was so intrigued by corn and berries, but let me tell you, it's chillin w its cousins in my freezer! I should've taken a pic of my freezer at the height of the sale! I think I have 8 pints in my freezer. Don't judge me. They also have this long bench outside for people to sit on. Place was clean, street parking only and gender neutral restroom. The original McConnell's was founded back in 1949 in Santa Barbara. My son and I were there not too long ago and tried the original one in SB. They also have 3 other locations including this one. The vibe just didn't rub me the right way. All employees were somewhat trying their best to be helpful. They also serve sorbet, baked goods (which were empty). I wanted to get a cookie or a muffin. Whatever was left didn't look appealing. They make smoothies, shakes, and sauces. Everything from scratch. Time to make a trip to Freddos.

So, my only suggestion, and it's the reason I don't order more than I do, is to make combos or some cheaper options. Most places do that and it works really well. But the cookies themselves are great, at least my two orders were. I hope they hang on and I encourage everyone to try for themselves - don't always trust the one-star reviews and besides anyone who knows anything about Yelp knows that I am the ONLY one you should listen to. :)

The dough itself didn't have much flavor either and tasted more like a sugar cookie without any sugar. Very dry but they did come warm so that was the only positive. I really don't like leaving poor reviews on small business but it's not really worth your money at all. It was not an enjoyable experience. You can make better cookies at home from the grocery store for cheaper. If you are making a business out of any product you should be wanting to provide your customers with the best experience and that's not what is happening here.

We couldn't leave because my kid was committed to get this cupcake, but I will not spend another dime at this shop. In response to the owners comment below: I walked in at the same time as the woman you had this conversation with and she left before I did. Your shop is small and it is impossible to only hear a portion of your conversation. You can try to reframe what you said after the fact but I understood exactly how you felt about your new clientele. I sincerely hope that the ridiculously made up devils chose to spend their money somewhere where their hard earned cash is appreciated and they are made to feel welcomed and safe. You have certainly lost a customer in me.

Despite this, we were abruptly told to leave because the store was "closing in five minutes," although posted hours indicate otherwise. The only apparent issue was a few crumbs from the donuts. The interaction felt dismissive and discriminatory toward families with children. I hope ownership reviews this situation and ensures all customers are treated with respect.
