This restaurant was high on my must-try restaurant list and I finally got it this past weekend. There are so many things that I love about Basso. Right off the bat, their ambience and decor were so aesthetically pleasing. I love the open-kitchen concept which is very modernized and you can watch the chefs do work their magic. They have plenty of seatings and you can join the virtual line in advance of your reservation. It was really convenient because it took one hour from when we put our name down online to when we got seated. For a party of 2, we ordered an appetizer of mussels, one entree of squid ink pasta and one truffle and mushroom pizza. My favorite was the truffle pizza. It was so flavorful and rich with truffle oil and we ended up finishing the whole thing. The squid ink pasta was good but there was not enough sauce so it felt a little dry, especially for the pipe rigate pasta. Mussels were fresh and tasty, paired really well with the bread dipped in sauce. I love that all dishes came in generous portions so those 3 dishes were super filling for us. Overall, I enjoyed my time at Basso and it is definitely on my list of favorite Italian restaurants in St. Louis. read more

We were able to make a last minute reservation and they were able to get us on the list and seated within 45-minutes. It was a little loud in the main dining area, making it hard to hear the people I was with, but I love that they have real fire lights at the booths. Our apps were tasty (calamari & shishito peppers) but the mains were overly spicy/almost inedible... and I LOVE spice. Not pictured was our shrimp pasta and pepperoni pizza with honey drizzle over it. I took the pasta home, added more pasta too it, olive oil and sauce, and it was still outrageously spicy. Maybe they just had an off night, but spice is supposed to enhance a dish and it's flavors, not make it unbearable to eat. We expected a wait because of the popularity, but we used the online waitlist option and were told we'd be seated around seven. When we checked in at seven, we were told it would be at least another half hour. About 40 minutes later we received a text and checked in and it was still another 10 minutes before we were seated. We weren't too frustrated because we thought the meal would be worth the wait. Unfortunately, our server was less than experienced and not knowledgeable about our vegetarian questions. We were also told inaccurately that the kitchen couldn't do substitutions for the meat components of certain dishes. The lemon pasta we ordered was underdone and tough, and the lemon overwhelmed any other flavors in the dish other than the raw onion that was obnoxiously placed on top. The burrata came with a side of mushrooms for us instead of prosciutto, but the mushrooms were over seasoned with too much thyme. And then possibly the worst dish, the margarita pizza, arrived. We suspect the same dough that was used and served in loaf form with our appetizer was used for this pizza. I think some chain restaurants might be better than this crust. The atmosphere was very overstimulating as well, with big screen TVs all the way around the bar and rock music blaring so loudly you could hardly hear the conversation. All in all, this is not a place I feel a desire to return to because the Brussels sprouts were the best dish and I can find those just about any other place. What a shame. read more

I didn't expect how good this place would be, from the outside I thought it was some gimmick place for old people. I was so wrong. The atmosphere was dark and moody with alt rock music from high school (class of 90). Our server, Ellis knew the menu well, was friendly and amazingly helpful. The food was some of the best Italian I have had outside of Italy. I had a Sicilian Cab to drink that was very good. Dinner was a lamb ragù that was outstanding, and the pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. Our table had 3 desserts, tiramisu, cherry gelato, and cannoli. These were huge, so be careful. The cannolo was great, my Tiramisu was delicious, but the winner was probably the homemade cherry gelato. I feel it was a pretty good bargain too, I have paid a lot more for less food of much lesser quality for sure. Love the happy hour. Service is always great, they will let you stay as long as you'd like, but can typically get you in and out quickly if you need that. My niece and I visited Basso for a post birthday dinner for me. I was looking forward to trying it after seeing reviews of the place by local food critics and influencers online. Upon entering, we were greeted by two hosts, immediately seated which was good. The place is kind of dark but we didn't mind. I ordered the crispy meatballs and papardelle pasta. The meatballs were very delicious and packed lots of flavor. Dipping them in the marinara sauce that they sat on top of is a great idea. My pasta was good at the restaurant and I didn't eat it all so I had leftovers. It does not reheat well though the next day. Our server was friendly but not as attentive as expected. I told her I was celebrating my birthday but nothing was done for me. I noticed that she gave someone at another table a free dessert for her birthday. I felt unheard when I saw this. We recently tried Basso for the first time and it did not disappoint! We started with the bread and olive oil appetizer. I had the risotto and my fiancé had a pizza. All of them were mouthwatering. The risotto had so much flavor, which is not always the case with risotto. The pizza could be shared between two as a light snack/ meal. The risotto was also a very large portion. Basso also has a unique vibe. The booths seem very homey and the ambiance is dark and personal. It's in the basement so there are no windows, but that made it have a "speak easy" or similar vibe. The first thing you notice about Basso is the sultry, basement vibe. I loved the dim lighting with little torches lining the walls. It definitely gives off the aura of being a ~trendy, big city~ restaurant, which is lovely. What I ordered: I got the roasted cauliflower and Brussels sprouts appetizer. Bassos is the best and I always enjoy the service, food, and drink. But I am begging you guys to do reservations days in advance. Week days are almost always fine, but I would avoid Bassos completely on weekends unless you go right when they open. It is always a pain to have to go on your waitlist that has never once been accurate. A few weeks ago the waitlist "shut down" at 4:30PM... I was thinking it was just broken so I went an hour before my dinner date to put our names down only to find out that they actually turned off the waitlist because it filled up for the night at 4:30PM.... Just do reservations! It will make life easier for everybody. I rarely go anymore because you never know if you will actually be seated or not. On the coldest night of the year in mid-Feb this was one of the few restaurants that stayed open. We were lucky to find it. Located in a hotel, once you go down the stairs you find a nice, lowly lit, cozy, spacious dining area. Large open kitchen on one side, booth and table seating on the other. We carried out the food which was very small in portion. Each dish came in a small carryout box, the kind you get when you take leftovers home. Disappointing considering the price point. We had the Cacio e Pepe, Strazzopretti, and the Pappardelle. Taste was ok on the Cacio e Pepe and Strazzopretti but I did not care for the flavors in the Pappardelle. Probably not the best types of food to carryout but given the circumstances there wasn't much choice. I would still go back and dine there since the ambience is cozy, plus they have other interesting menu items which we were not able to try- they ran out of the mafalda when we tried to place an order. Their pizzas comes out of a wood fired oven and that looked amazing so we will try that next time we're in town. read more
