Holy Canoli, ya'll. Order: - Truffle Fries - Margarita Pizza - Pepperoni Pizza (to go) The truffle fries were divine. They were a much skinnier version of shoestring. They were crispy and a serving size is like a small size of McDonalds fries with a few extra thrown in a bowl. The Margarita pizza was CHEF'S KISS. The middle part of the pizza was super thin, but PACKED with flavor! Crust is my favorite part of a pizza and let me tell you that this crust was it. Loved it so much that I ordered another pizza to go. I wanna give this place 5 stars so badly, but I unfortunately can't do to the service. My friend called in to be put onto the waitlist which is totally understandable for such a great establishment to be packed. She got a text saying to arrive around 6:15pm. I was running behind, but she said she would get us a table. I got there around 6:32pm-ish. *Side note for parking: There is a parking lot, but it is small. Luckily people were leaving when I arrived so I was able to find a spot right away, but definitely try to get there early to be able to get a spot! So I walk down and we catch up for 15 minutes and she got another text saying out table was ready, but we were asked to give them 10 minutes to clean up, no problem. 20 more minutes pass and we're still standing there waiting. It was pretty disappointing that the waitlist system they had wasn't even close to accurate. After we were seated, our waitress wasn't really personable. She took our orders just fine, but nothing special. Then after paying we were finishing our drinks and chatting away, but I felt like she was rushing us because she came by to pick up the checks after writing our tips on there and told us to drive safe and have a good night. That was a really big turn off for me. I don't think I've ever been to a place that rushed me like that and that's why I really can't give this place 5 stars. read more

Basso is a great spot for a night out! Upon entering, you walk down a staircase to the main dining area. It definitely gives off speakeasy vibes! I love the ambiance and intimacy of this restaurant. They also have a great happy hour on food and drinks. Drink selections were great and there was something for everyone to eat- Pizza, burgers, appetizers if you didn't feel like ordering a whole entree. I went to Basso last week for a happy hour and had such a good time! When my friend and I arrived around 5:00 pm, we were quickly able to find 2 spots at the bar where we could enjoy some wine and snacks. The bartenders were both super helpful and offered some good recommendations for drinks and snacks. They have a nice happy hour menu that we ordered from and the portion sizes for the snacks were full size! The bartenders notified us when HH was about to end so that we could each order one more drink at the HH price, which was super nice! The atmosphere here is super chill. It's a good spot to hang out with friends and it would also be a good date spot. The menu for dinner looked fantastic, but we each had somewhere else to be so we enjoyed our drinks and snacks and then were on our way. I look forward to going back soon! read more

All I can say is this place is 10/10. The atmosphere is super cool, very cozy, dark. It's like you're hidden away in a speakeasy/upscale pub. It's down the stairs in the basement, adding to the hidden/cozy feeling. There's also a very European vibe to it. I absolutely loved the vibe. As for the food, it was absolutely delicious. I got the bucatini with shrimp pasta, my bf got the pepperoni pizza. Some of the best pizza I have ever eaten (he let me try his). We split some bread and oil it was fantastic. I also got a cocktail and it was good. The service was great, they were insanely packed but did well considering how packed they were. Basso is a favorite when I visit St. Louis. The Alice cocktail is light and refreshing, the brussel sprouts are fantastic, and the trout was very well cooked. Our server missed one of the orders we placed and was so apologetic and brought out desserts for the table free of charge. We had a big group and totally understood the confusion! The restaurant is very moody and cool but the sound echos so it's mildly difficult to hear the people not directly next to you. We had such good service here. My husband got really picky about his pizza and they knocked themselves out to make it exactly like he wanted, even cooking mushrooms so he could add them to the pizza. It's a basement, so hard to dampen the sound of people but they add music on top and you have to shout to hear each other. We had a party of 5 and it was like playing a game of telephone! My obsession with Basso continues... A treasured favorite for me & my friends, I came in for an early dinner with one other on a Friday night. I always love the atmosphere (cozy, welcoming) and as early as it was, the place was busy! It was Happy Hour which was a great start--we both got drinks & shared a Margherita pizza for an app (pictured). Basso's pizzas are thin but honestly have a pretty fluffy outside crust. I think it's a go-to for an app, very delicious. I've never had a bad staff experience & tonight was no exception. Our waitress was very kind and while I've been here multiple times, she made great recommendations! I ended up having the risotto for dinner (creamy and dreamy) while my friend had the mafalda (and who ever went wrong with a pork ragú base?). I didn't expect how good this place would be, from the outside I thought it was some gimmick place for old people. I was so wrong. The atmosphere was dark and moody with alt rock music from high school (class of 90). Our server, Ellis knew the menu well, was friendly and amazingly helpful. The food was some of the best Italian I have had outside of Italy. I had a Sicilian Cab to drink that was very good. Dinner was a lamb ragù that was outstanding, and the pasta was fresh and cooked perfectly. Our table had 3 desserts, tiramisu, cherry gelato, and cannoli. These were huge, so be careful. The cannolo was great, my Tiramisu was delicious, but the winner was probably the homemade cherry gelato. I feel it was a pretty good bargain too, I have paid a lot more for less food of much lesser quality for sure. If you love real Italian, not just red checked tablecloth spaghetti and meatballs, don't let the outside fool you-eat here. read more

My wife and I dined here on a Wednesday evening just missing Happy Hour by about 20 minutes. We added our name to the wait list as we drove over and it said we'd have about a 10 - 20 minute wait based on our arrival time. When we got there the place was packed with Happy Hour folks but we were fortunate to get a small two person table in the downstairs area. It was very noisy but we could carry on a conversation, not sure that would have been possible with a party of four. In any event, they have a good selection of beers on draft that were reasonably priced. My wife ordered the Margarita Pizza and I ordered the Bucatini Fra Diavolo. The pizza came first and I had a piece and I'd have to say it was really good. I thought the crust was good and had just the right amount of crunch and chew. The cheese and sauce on it were very good as well. The Bucatini came out about 10 minutes later which was a bit off-putting, however, the dish was fantastic. Let's celebrate! Me and my fiance decided to celebrate my new job at Basso and it didn't disappoint! The vibe is always on point dark, sexy, even a fireplace and always great service. We easily joined the waitlist and when we got there were seated right away. We grabbed a glass of wine and ordered two pasta dishes the ravioli by far was my FAVORITE! Seems simple but amazing flavor the Pappardelle with lamb was also great but the winner is definitely the ravioli! We topped off the night with Olive Oil Cake, it was good not my favorite but solid desert. Overall a great place for a date night, girls night, family dinner. I stopped into Basso while in St. Louis for a celebratory late night dinner. First of all the ambiance here is insane. It's the kind of place that would be especially perfect on a winter's evening since it's underground, warm, dark, and inviting. Perfect for a date night. Big props to the wait staff since my coworker and I arrived very close to the end of the night and they were nothing but welcoming and accommodating even though I'm sure they were ready to wrap up the evening. We expected a wait because of the popularity, but we used the online waitlist option and were told we'd be seated around seven. When we checked in at seven, we were told it would be at least another half hour. About 40 minutes later we received a text and checked in and it was still another 10 minutes before we were seated. We weren't too frustrated because we thought the meal would be worth the wait. Unfortunately, our server was less than experienced and not knowledgeable about our vegetarian questions. We were also told inaccurately that the kitchen couldn't do substitutions for the meat components of certain dishes. The lemon pasta we ordered was underdone and tough, and the lemon overwhelmed any other flavors in the dish other than the raw onion that was obnoxiously placed on top. The burrata came with a side of mushrooms for us instead of prosciutto, but the mushrooms were over seasoned with too much thyme. And then possibly the worst dish, the margarita pizza, arrived. We suspect the same dough that was used and served in loaf form with our appetizer was used for this pizza. I think some chain restaurants might be better than this crust. The atmosphere was very overstimulating as well, with big screen TVs all the way around the bar and rock music blaring so loudly you could hardly hear the conversation. All in all, this is not a place I feel a desire to return to because the Brussels sprouts were the best dish and I can find those just about any other place. What a shame. read more

So first off, we did have a hard time finding this place. It's literally in the same plaza as the Starbucks and the hotel. Wish I knew. But once you do find this restaurant, the atmosphere is very chill. My husband got his burger medium and it came out perfect had a good char grill on it. Even the bun was toasted with grill marks. It came with a really yummy ketchup and aïoli sauce that tasted homemade with Parmesan truffle fries. I got the margarita pizza, which was thin, crispy and tasted fresh. And our waitress was very nice. And of course I had to get desserts so I got the cannolis to go. Overall, I had a pleasant experience, just wish that the restaurant was easier to find. read more

We were able to make a last minute reservation and they were able to get us on the list and seated within 45-minutes. It was a little loud in the main dining area, making it hard to hear the people I was with, but I love that they have real fire lights at the booths. Our apps were tasty (calamari & shishito peppers) but the mains were overly spicy/almost inedible... and I LOVE spice. Not pictured was our shrimp pasta and pepperoni pizza with honey drizzle over it. I took the pasta home, added more pasta too it, olive oil and sauce, and it was still outrageously spicy. Maybe they just had an off night, but spice is supposed to enhance a dish and it's flavors, not make it unbearable to eat. My niece and I visited Basso for a post birthday dinner for me. I was looking forward to trying it after seeing reviews of the place by local food critics and influencers online. Upon entering, we were greeted by two hosts, immediately seated which was good. The place is kind of dark but we didn't mind. I ordered the crispy meatballs and papardelle pasta. The meatballs were very delicious and packed lots of flavor. Dipping them in the marinara sauce that they sat on top of is a great idea. My pasta was good at the restaurant and I didn't eat it all so I had leftovers. It does not reheat well though the next day. Our server was friendly but not as attentive as expected. I told her I was celebrating my birthday but nothing was done for me. I noticed that she gave someone at another table a free dessert for her birthday. I felt unheard when I saw this. Before my niece paid the server told me Happy Birthday again, but that was it. Whole experience was a 7/10. read more
