It wasn't because of the food, but read below to understand why. I was window shopping at the Fashion Place Mall and had previously purchased an Orange Julius beverage right before my arrival to the restaurant. BASTA is located directly on the mall property and accessible from the SW exit doors nearby Dr. Martens and Urban Outfitters. I walked in and saw the menu offered quite a selection of pasta and pizza. Including classic pasta dishes such as Spaghetti and Cacio E Pepe, Margherita Pizza, and Tiramisu. The olive oil cake with gelato sounded particularly interesting as well. I stepped up to the register excitedly to place my order. The cashier greeted me and asked if I wanted to provide my name and phone number to create an account. I provided my info. As they were typing, I requested for a takeout order since my husband had already purchased food from another restaurant. We had plans to return to the food court area and try each other's dishes. After the cashier took my information down, the manager next to the counter saw the Orange Julius drink in hand and instructed that I wasn't allowed to have outside drinks with me. I responded to communicate that I'm ordering my food to go and wouldn't be dining in. But I could tell the manager wasn't pleased and repeated to leave the drink outside because their restaurant serves alcohol and there was a risk. Given my history with restaurant industry, I understand the alcohol policy. However, I just purchased a $7 OJ and wasn't ready to leave the drink outside and directly on the ground of a sidewalk. The manger stepped aside to address another task and the amiable cashier repeated to ask if I can leave my drink outside. At this point, I was negatively surprised and honestly lost excitement to try out the restaurant. Since the only option was to leave my drink on the sidewalk outside, I held back my frustration and calmly communicated that I've changed my mind and will not be placing an order today. The cashier wanted affirmation on my decision, and I said yes it's okay. As I proceeded to walk-out, the manager noticed and came from behind the counter to explain the alcohol policy and offered a complimentary drink from the restaurant instead. Given the fact that they were still requesting to place my OJ drink outside, I didn't feel comfortable and politely declined. Recommendation: Option 1. It would be helpful to have a place where customers can leave the items nearby the front door. I've seen other shops that provide a small tabletop and a sign. Option 2. If the customers are ordering take-out and not staying to dine-in, the restaurant should allow them to have outside drinks in their hand. Or they could have it in hand but now allowed to consume while they're inside. Overall, the restaurant is located on a mall property and the likelihood of patrons carrying a drink with them is high. I can't confirm if BASTA had a sign at the front door to communicate no outside food or drinks. Since it was dark, I can't tell from the attached picture. I reflect on my experience and understand the alcohol policy concerns but would have wished they offered a solution to place my drink on a side table or the corner of the front counter. I appreciate the manager trying to address the situation and offered the complimentary drink with a future meal, but once again I honestly didn't feel comfortable. I'm open to returning once they offer a solution to address the issue. I will update this review once I get a chance to try the food. read more

Quality food that's cooked fast with fresh pasta. Owned by Italian group of other local restaurants. Enjoyed all but croutons were too hard to eat. Will be back again and try other dishes. Went here as a date night. Located on the outer portions of the fashion place mall, great location. We got the spaghetti Cacio and Pepe with chicken on the side. The pasta tasted great but the chicken was overcooked on the outside and raw on the inside. But they were nice enough to give us bread on the side. All in all, it wasn't for me. I think the prices for the amount of food we were given is ridiculous. We paid almost $35 for ONE dish with meat and an Italian soda that was mostly whipped cream and ice. The pizza here is good but the cheese is thicker than the dough, very messy to eat. The pasta is drenched with sauce so it is like basically eating sauce, the noodles was good. The food comes out fast, the salad was dunked with sauce and also very salty. The workers there are very nice but they forgot a meal and got some of the orders wrong. I returned to Basta for the third time this year and I'm still blown away by the flavors. The tomato sauce is just perfect, not too sweet and not bitter at all. The pasta is cooked to perfection. On top of all that, the service is outstanding. The staff is super friendly and helpful. Make sure you arrive early for dinner because it fills up and then you will have to wait for a table. There's something inherently strange about BASTA. Pasteria. Situated on the exterior wall lots at Fashion Place mall, it exudes a ditzy aura. Yet, once inside, you're greeted with a strange sorta cafeteria feel. The menu is difficult to read with small font, and placed away and to the left of the cashier. I had to take steps back a few times just to recall what I wanted to order. The cashier said that the tables are full service. Yet, there aren't any waiters. Just a busser that seemed confused and overwhelmed. We were served our main course before our appetizers. We were served a coke that we didn't order. The table behind us got a cocktail that was surely ours. We had to remind the busser that our order was missing twice. My friend was served 10 minutes before my order arrived. This doesn't feel like a full service restaurant, and BASTA shouldn't pretend that they are. It's a mess. The food is serviceable, but for the price there are much better places. I dare say that I preferred Cheesecake Factory over BASTA. read more

This is an interesting place. It's a mix of take out and restaurant. You walk in to a lit up board above with the menu and you order at the counter. Once you pay you sit down and wait staff brings everything out to you and does come by to check on you. They brought us to go boxes as well. Very friendly staff. The food was excellent. The baked bread that you order and comes with tomato sauce is next level fantastic. I can't recommend this one enough. Addicting is the right word. I had the bolognese and my friend ordered the creamy crab pasta and both were very good. Probably my only complaint was the price. If I'm walking up to a counter to order my food I'm not expecting to pay $25 a person before drinks. No salad or sides included though they bring some bread and oil and vinegar to your table but that's pretty sparse. When you add a salad, bread, and drinks it's going to be $85-$100 for two people before tip. For me that's well too expensive for what you get. The portions are reasonable but not huge. I probably won't go back only because of the price. I'd prefer a nice sit down restaurant if I'm going to spend $100+ for me and another. read more

I went to Basta with a colleague of mine today for lunch. Upon arrival we were told that they weren't open for lunch even though the other day we were told they would be. The owners however told us they'd serve us for the miscommunication, which they didn't have to do! We both had the pappardelle genovese as that's what the team recommended we try. I'm thrilled we did! The meat was tender and the pasta was fresh which made for a great plate of pasta. The meatballs also looked delicious but that'll have to wait until the next visit. Additionally, the staff and ownership were all friendly during our visit. Which I greatly appreciated given it felt as though we were imposing given the earlier miscommunication. Plus the space itself has a fun deli feeling to it in my opinion. Overall, I'd recommend stopping into Basta for a great meal! read more

I got the short rib bolognese and it was a very sweet take on bolognese, which I would not get again but that's a personal preference -- just so sweet. The arancini was good and bread was good. We told her what we liked and didn't like so she suggested what she thought we would like. She checked on us frequently and was just a joy to talk to. I wasn't sure what to expect but this is the perfect fast casual mix of chic deliciousness. The ambiance is high end, very bougie with a live DJ in the corner on Friday and Saturday evenings, but the music isn't obnoxiously loud, it's the perfect volume and he does an excellent job bringing in fun music while you dine. Order and then sit down to enjoy the complimentary focaccia (which is absolutely perfect- soft on the inside and crunchy on the crust with baked in grilled onions and grape tomatoes), along with an Italian soda (made to perfection), and water that is brought out as you wait for your food. I did think my Caesar salad had a little too much dressing but I liked how it was presented and perfectly cut into long pieces. My kids loved their pizza and calzone, and my husband and daughter enjoyed their pasta, flavored to perfection with the perfect fresh texture for the pasta. I also ordered a side of shrimp which was drenched in oil but everyone loved it, I especially loved the grilled garlics that came with it! The pizza and calzone are big and shareable, the pasta is more an individual size. Got the Pappardelle Short Rib - although good, difficult to justify the total $27 with tax/tip dish for a fast dining spot. We are frequenters of Sicilia Mia and though this concept is cool to be able to grab really great pasta really fast, at the price point I'd rather just go to Sicilian Mia for a few bucks more for a more formal evening. There are also a lot of new authentic Italian restaurants popping up around the valley doing hand made pasta out of concept kitchens and also some fast/casual places for a lot less. The service was excellent and all in all everything was great, I have absolutely no complaints and I think these guys will do great. Just difficult to recommend to peeps given the price point for a casual concept with competing models in the area who are pricing their dishes a few bucks less that are equal in quality if not just as good/better. Given we're located in more of Central Valley, if I want to get good pasta I'm willing to drive but will probably go get similar for less $...otherwise worth a try and definitely fantastic pasta as expected from this line of restaurants. read more

I am visiting Utah for work and came across BASTA completely by chance. I had the pappardalle pesto pasta with a side of their crispy chicken, and a Nutella shake. Everything was absolutely delicious and the chicken was so crispy! I appreciated the Nutella shake was not overpowering with chocolate flavor and had a good balance of sweetness to it. I also made the mistake of not realizing the pasta came with grated cheese on top. I don't really like cheese so I asked if I could get a new plate and tried to scrape off as much as I can. To my surprise, the staff offered to remake it for me. Basta. I am a pasta lover, part time carb connoisseur. Endurance athlete so eat carbs round the clock. Let me start by saying the noodles, the pasta itself, might be the highest quality, best pasta I've ever had. You can tell it's hand crafted, unique recipes. The qualms I had: The lack of protein options to add to the pasta sauce was disappointing. As much as I love pasta I don't want to go have an entire meal of straight carbs, some meat or veggie additions would be great and I'd be happy to pay for it. The atmosphere was a bit lack luster, looks like a fun trendy atmosphere on their promotions but was a bit of a black rectangle once actually inside. Lastly, just for managements information. I did watch the cook text on his phone with gloves on then proceed to handle mine and others food. Not the most appealing service. Overall: 10/10 pasta. We were told certain things were allergy friendly over the phone, then told in person that they were not after driving 40min to get there. The gluten free, dairy free options were lackluster. It was like eating Rao's pasta sauce and the chickpea pasta from Costco, which I could have done at home for 1/4 the price. The regular pasta was gloopy and stuck together. Overall, completely overpriced and underwhelming. $72 before tip for 2 adults and 2 kids was ridiculous for the terrible quality. I tried Basta Pasteria for girls night and there were some elements I liked and others I didn't. First of all, the restaurant was much smaller than I thought it would be. Th entrance is nice and open but there wasn't much seating in the dining area. It is a fast casual type place and they got each table cleaned up quickly after each party/guest left. The employees were very friendly and helpful although many didn't speak English. I ordered fettuccini Alfredo, eggplant Parmesan, focaccia bread and a margherita pizza. The pizza was by far the best thing I ordered because cooked in a wood Fire oven which I always enjoy! The fettuccine was very bland and I ended up getting some marinara sauce to add to the dish which helped it taste better. Nobody liked the eggplant Parmesan. I know there are better things on the menu and I will have to try those another time like the short rib pasta. We also got the olive oil cake which was yummy, it reminded me of cornbread but much more soft. I love their sister restaurant, Sicilia Mia, but I wasn't too impressed by BASTA. Not our favorite unfortunately :( Pasta was very obviously home made, so tasty, the short ribs sauce was wonderful but everything from there was downhill. The Cesar salad was very oily and peppery, it definitely needed more acidity even if it came from a lemon slice on the side. Calzone was good and flavor was great but very runny and needed much more salami and cheese. It was mostly bread. You opened it up and it was just soupy. I think a thicker sauce would be more beneficial as well. The meatball appetizer was not good. The meat balls were so tough and dry. No flavor, missing a fatty element. We couldn't finish them. I was excited for the focaccia but it was very tough and had an almost plastic or artificial taste? Needed more salt at least and maybe more balsamic in the dip? I think it would be fun to do an herb and oil dip as well. It may complement it better. I think they should also offer it while you are waiting for your food or hand you it after you pay. Otherwise it gets wasted being overwhelmed by the food. Peach Italian soda also really needed more soda. It was essentially sweet milk but I still enjoyed it. Concept is great, staff was quick and pleasant. It's casual but classy and clean. For a whooping $81 it just really didn't wow me and I don't think we would go back for anything other than specifically pasta. It may definitely be on us for getting dishes outside of the pasta. read more

This place is exceptional. The pasta is similar to antica sicilia's which is twice the price and half the portion. This is my new favorite spot to eat. I saw a lot of people complaining about the free bread. I believe they changed it based off of past pictures. It was delicious. We also had the peach mojito and aperol spritz which were super cute and yummy. The real star of the show here though was the pasta. MY GOODNESS is it delicious. I had the Gnocchi Sorrentino while my boyfriend had the Pappardelle Genoese. I'm absolutely puzzled why this place doesn't have all 5 star reviews because this is my new favorite restaurant in Utah read more
