We were looking for a nice place to eat after a great Autumn day exploring Kendall Sq. On a Saturday and found an opening at Batifol. This restaurant is beautiful and looks like a French Bistro or French Cafe. The food was wonderful. We chose to start with a mixed cheese/meat Charcuterie Board, and had Coq au Vin and Beef Bourguignon with a side of Fava Beans. We would have had desserts if we weren't time constrained. Give it a try. Nice atmosphere to spend time with friends over a bistro meal. While the original petit Robert food still is better in consistency of the execution of the food, I would still go back because of the service, tables, architecture and menu options. My favorite dish was the spring pea salad. The fish was salty and texture like salted cod (not to my liking). I heard the steak was tough. The fries were so so. The Niçoise salad looked pretty as well as the risotto. read more

Stir away from "La Femme Fatale" for it is a tasty cocktail but that laughable over the top ice rose is ridiculously over the top.

I ate here on a business trip and I think the staff might have thought I was a professional food critic so now I feel obligated to leave a review. :) I ate the escargot and the red perch and for cocktails had the Rivoli and Chatelet. The escargot are served over bread without their shells, which is a welcome break from the norm in my opinion. The red perch was cooked nicely (opaque but not dry) and had a good balance of crunch and sauce. Cocktails were good but nothing special. Only major downside was that acoustics were poor, at least where I was sitting in the corner. I couldn't hear anything the staff said to me over the background noise. read more

The servers were prompt with seating us, taking our orders, and answering our questions. They made it easy for us to enjoy the yummy food and drinks. Came here for a celebratory lunch with my husband and one year old daughter. Service and food were good. I am very annoyed that there wasn't a changing table in the men's room. (Not sure about women's room.) I had to change my daughter's diaper on a small nightstand-esque piece of furniture which she barely fit on and caused me to fumble with all my stuff. I ended up having to place her on the bathroom floor which is just gross. Why have high chairs for little ones when you can't accommodate for them in the bathroom? read more

Went to dinner here for the first time. Great ambience, food, and service. Portions are also really good. We ordered the fried cauliflower, green salad, moules frites, and half roasted chicken, and had leftovers that my boyfriend happily took home. The fancy cocktails looked good & seem to be the point of emphasis here, but we didn't try them so can't comment on them. We visited on a Saturday night & the place was hopping, but it did not feel overly crowded, and the noise level was actually very reasonable. The service was excellent - friendly, prompt, and attentive. We ordered classic bistro dishes: Coq au Vin, Boeuf Bourguignon, and two orders of sautéed duck breast. The food was ok, certainly edible, but each dish was pretty seriously flawed: the beef and chicken were overdone, the vegetable garnishes mostly underdone, the sauces in both cases bland. The duck was perfectly medium rare (thank you, sous vide!) but lacked any noticeable sear, and this sauce was stridently sweet & sour, but not very flavorful. The creme brûlée was fine. I guess if you're there to drink, the food is just fine, which is perhaps all they're reaching for. I don't think we'll be back. read more

I went back to Batifol for dinner and have some feedback. The escargot were served dry outside of their shells on a small piece of brioche. Doesn't everyone enjoy dipping their bread in the garlic butter? I felt like I missed out. The Gratin on top of the onion soup tasted charcoal burnt. I'm not exaggerating. And last but not least, I think the server should have explained the condiments that were served with the steak tartar and walked the diner through the process of mixing everything together including the dijon mustard. We think it was red onion, capers, parsley and cornichons but since everything was diced so small it was not obvious. Deconstructed is creative but give the diner some guidance. The shining star of the meal was the cold Kronenbourg on tap, it was delicious and I will be back for at least the beer. read more

We were fifteen minutes late to our reservation but were still seated immediately despite it being a Friday night at 7:15pm with the restaurant pretty busy. Waiter made good recommendations. We moved here from NYC in June and missed our local French restaurant. Tonight we ate at Batifol in Cambridge and we found our new local favorite. The Ambience is great. Not too crowded or too loud. They did an amazing job with the space which is very nicely done and you at transported to a very comfortable and lovely bistro. You totally forget you're sitting on Third Avenue in Kendall Square. The service was great. Wait staff were helpful and food was delivered in a timely fashion. We had the onion soup, tonight's special mushroom soup, Steak frites and the Demi-poulet. Everything we had was very good. I think the steak frites was one of the best I've had, here or abroad. Glass of Rose topped it off. Just a wonderful meal. We stumbled on this place on the way to Tatte across the street and we are glad we stopped for brunch! Modern French vibe, lovely inside. Kids had burger, waffle salee (savory), steak and eggs, we had eggs Benedict with smoked salmon and the vegetable tartine. Everything but the waffle came with perfectly cooked hand cut frites and a lightly dressed salad. Everything really well seasoned and delicious. Serving sizes generous. Only misstep was the savory waffle did not come with the short rib or sauce it was supposed to have, we flagged someone down, turned out to be the owner, who had them fix it and sent out a complimentary sweet waffle with whipped cream, berries. Overheard owner chatting with another table that he is opening a French bakery across the street later this year. I must have selected the wrong item on the menu. I was only there once for lunch and ordered Tuna Confit & Saffran Aioli Tartine. This is how it was described: Confit ahi tuna, Boston lettuce, eggs, roasted peppers, anchovies, saffron aioli. I fully expected fresh raw tuna. What I got was canned tuna preserved in water on a toast. Not even a tuna salad. Very dry. My cats don't eat this kind of tuna. I could not eat it either. Took home, added some aioli and made a semi-eatable sandwich. I just don't like to through away food. Can of tuna packed in water is $ 2.00 at most. This one was $19.00. Two stars, not one because they did make a good Negroni. read more

The food is faithful to the French style, dessert was excellent, the cocktail selections are fun, the wine list is comfortably short, not overwhelming, but varied enough to satisfy any reasonable person. One of the worst dinners that I've had. The food was so salty and horribly seasoned. Mushrooms tasted bland and salty while the vol au vent was not puffy at all. Fish was overcooked and the moules frites had so much salt in it that I felt like I was in the ocean (also, no bread at all to eat this with?). Went here for a date and it was great! The interior was very cool and the dim lighting made for great ambiance. The place was packed on a Monday night and the food explains why. Attentive, friendly staff, but the service is extremely disorganized. One friendly person takes your order, another friendly person delivers your appetizers, another friendly person brings your entree. You get the point. The problem is that the communication among all these friendly folks is pretty poor. We were a party of eight, and the wait staff had no idea who ordered what, leading to some confusion. Because of a slight language barrier, and the fact that we had not been there before, they brought the items to the table and asked us to point at who ordered what. We didn't know what each dish was supposed to look like, so the problem was partly ours. A couple of items never arrived, although we were pleasantly assured "they are coming"; they never did. The staff tried really hard and was eager to please. The food is good, but not outstanding. Generally, this is a pleasant, decent, mediocre dining experience. read more

I'm impressed by how terrible this place was. Basic bistro fare that's been done in a thousand places and they couldn't get it right. We ordered from the brunch menu: cheeseburger and the salmon. The salon was fine, made to order. I ordered the burger medium well and it was a butter-infused lump of coal, so heavy and overcooked that I am skipping a couple of meals just to digest it. The side salad (freshly made) & red wine were okay. Unfortunately, the dessert (profiterole) was one gigantic ice cream-stuffed monster (not the typical small bites) mistakenly sprinkled with SALT. How could they mix that up? Staff was nice. They apologised for the mistake but it really highlights the total lack of attention to prepping food. So many places to go out - don't waste your time here for really mediocre / inedible food. read more

I am normally a very generous reviewer of restaurants because I realize the constraints, especially post covid, that impact service and sometimes the menu. But there is no other way to describe the service, oh, how should I put it? Awful! When was the last time you ordered steak frites and had to essentially beg for a steak knife minutes after the food was delivered and then after begging, the knife came many many minutes beyond the first bite. The service people are inattentive. We watched a man order wine, not once, not twice but three times before it came, on a night that was not very busy. We went to the restaurant to celebrate our wedding anniversary and I'm afraid it was ruined by the slow and inattentive service, albeit the smiles and general politeness of the servers. Also, the food was just okay and did not live up the expectations or the hype. We still left an 18 percent tip, but we normally leave 25 percent. We won't be visiting Batifol in Kendall Square anytime soon. read more

It's so nice to have another good dining option in Kendall Square. This place is a HUGE upgrade from Abigail's, which used to occupy the same space. The vibe is French bistro, with fancy tasting food but casual atmosphere. A bunch of the staff actually speak french, so opportunities abound for you to impress your date with your high school level french. Où est la discothèque!!! Plus, the outdoor tables are set up next to heaters and some face the sidewalk for people watching. Just like in Paris... I assume. I went soon after opening with a big group, so got to try a bunch of the items. Everything was rock solid to delicious. The salmon entree was perfectly cooked, moist on the inside with a crisp skin and swimming in a beautifully colored beet puree. The ceviche was also yum-- I didn't know that was a french thing but even my kids ate it up. Very extensive mocktail menu. The place suffered a few slip ups (eg forgetting to bring out the bread and one appetizer), but that's totally excusable for a brand new place. The dessert menu could use a little work-- the mousse and sorbet were fine, but was hoping for a more extensive and indulgent selection (chocolate souffle please). I hope they keep adding to the menu and rotating new items in, so I have an excuse to keep coming back. Coffee + pastries to go would also be a welcome addition. read more
