This is place is understaffed, overpriced, and overrated. Not once during my visit here was I greeted, offered assistance, or otherwise acknowledged. There was a man who I THINK was the owner, but he spent more time outside doing God-knows-what instead of paying attention to the potential customers inside. Correct me if I'm wrong, but calling the available merchandise "consigned" when they clearly look SALVAGED is an outright sugarcoating of the truth. I was SHOCKED at the prices of dining room tables. The likes of which I had seen at ACTUAL consignment stores for a fraction of the prices. A quick fifteen minute jaunt through the store was all I needed to realize the fact that Yelp is an imperfect site and that sometimes you get some seriously overrated businesses. read more

Since my first review, I've purchased two sofas at Bay Home, one for my mom's place and one for mine. Both excellent quality, in great condition, and reasonably priced. I suggest going regularly if you're on the hunt for something, the inventory is constantly turning over. They do a much better job of selecting and merchandising than most other furniture consignment stores. read more

Admittedly, this isn't the most comprehensive or informed review because I'm not an avid buyer of vintage furniture. I don't really know what a good or bad price for a particular item would be. Nonetheless, I left pretty thrilled with my visit because I found the exact kind of side table I was looking for. It seemed reasonably priced and the nice young fella who worked there was helpful and carried it to my car for me. I think I have a furniture crush. Came in here yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, looking for inspiration for dining tables - and trying to pick up some unique dining chairs. I have to say - I was very impressed by all the quality of the furniture and the art in relation to its price. Seemed very fair! I have no issues with Urban Home's policies, parking, or personnel . . . . . I full on LOVE THIS PLACE!!! I went a couple of weekends ago just to explore & walked out $600 poorer but got the most amazing stuff for my money! An Oly Studio gray leather chair for approx. $500 & two beautiful grey velvet benches & a large funky vase! The gal on the floor helped me find what I was searching for (the little benches) but also left me to my own devices so that I could shop without the hard sell! When I went to pay, the owner, Joe, was incredibly nice & funny . . . . .always a plus! He even helped me carry my benches out to the car (parking in back, folks!) & allowed me to keep my Oly chair there as long as needed since I couldn't take it with me that day! I'm going back this weekend to pick up said chair & will probably drop some more cash while I'm at it! Joe & team have a great concept & whomever the buyer is, kudos . . . . . . mostly mid-century modern stuff with some incredible funky finds thrown in!! Total pompous attitude from the owner. I was bringing by a pair of (1948) cool mid century nightstands in great condition, I was told they would sell for $99 (the pair) and I would get $25 each. My favorite furniture store. I have bought a number of really interesting pieces of furniture here that have completely shaped the style of my eclectic home. Their prices are reasonable, with a range of options based on style, historic significance and what shape it's in. I've personally purchased everything from a $30 wooden lamp to a $2k pair of chairs that I love. I try to browse through here every Saturday because the inventory changes so often and the furniture is so interesting. read more

This place is way over price for the condition of furniture they are selling. You'll find better pieces on Craigslist for half the price. Large showroom but they have no staff to help you. I tried to consign here once and people who answered the phone was rude. The owner should hire more people pay them well since prices compares to DWR instead of slave labor. Mid-Century Modern Overload... I am really surprised at all of the good reviews. Maybe I hit an off day.... I am looking for furniture, prints and mirrors for an entire rental apartment. I really only saw old grandma's prints and lots of mid-century modern, which I hate. At least it was clean, which was nice. There wasn't much of anything else to choose from and the prices are really high. You can find the same items on CL for 20% of the price. I thought most items were $400-$1800. There were some good buys on headboards in the back ($399), but hard to transport. read more

I went to this place to sell a framed print a while ago. The original worth of the print was well over 500$, but the owners only managed to sell for less than 150$. There were no scratches or any major flaws with what I handed over to them, and the woman who initially helped me in the store was incredibly rude and snotty and nearly refused to take it until I asked to speak with the manager. I imagine this place is alright if you are a customer, but I would not recommend selling here. In all honesty I should have gone to eBay. Would not sell or purchase items here because the owners are stuck-up, rude, and overly concerned about their image. on the plus side this store has some great stuff, some at affordable prices in comparison to other retailers. of course, some items seem really expensive, but if it's a designer piece and you think paying $1500 for a so-and-so's armchair is a good deal, you'll love this place. You can do better if you scour craigslist, but time is money! They also have a 24 hour return policy. So, if it doesn't fit, or its not comfortable or you notice something about it you don't like...you can bring it back. parking is generally not a problem and pick-up is pretty convenient from their loading dock. on the non-plus side: the staff is hit and miss. Some have been helpful and good natured...sometimes they are cranky or not so helpful. I still recommend this place to friends as a first stop on a hunt for furniture. read more

I'm glad that William the owner, on his 7th revision of his comment (yes, i got SEVEN emails from yelp. 5 last night, almost every 5 minutes updating me that William K the owner had commented on my review) finally realized what bad business sense it was to call a Yelp user a "spineless brat who is just angry that she didn't walk away with a bag of candy because Urban Home is for grownups. sorry kiddie." I may have it wrong about the merchandise, but I definitely don't have it wrong about the anger problems of both owners. Wow. So even though I'm just a 30 year old "kid" who productively works for Google & lives in Noe Valley and does enjoy the occasional bag of candy, at least I'm big enough to not paste his original rant in its entirety. My original posting: We were lured into Urban Home because of the cute font of their signage, yes, we're that easy to please. That being said, the fact that we left so disgusted is a testament to the "owner" or "manager" whoever the guy was with the horrible attitude that greeted us as we walked in by chewing out someone that I assume was an employee but could have been a customer. Complete with dramatic hand gestures, I was mortified by the public embarrassment. We looked around, most of it is overpriced crap. They had a few nice, overpriced mod pieces...mostly upstairs...and when we ventured up there we accidentally ended up in an open room that i guess was a private office. Instead of politely apologizing like any decent human would, he practically yelled, once again, that nothing in there was for sale. NOTHING. Point taken. Trust that you do not any old furniture enough to give this horrible place business. William K--who looks to be the "owner"? of this business (but I spoke to JOE, whose business card had "OWNER" on it) could not be more wrong. And pretentious fits my description to a " T " especially with your remarks on how my phone call went with JOE. I offered 85 bucks for this computer desk because it had a mismatched part on it (the 5th wheel) had numerous scratches on the metal base, and when you take into consideration the price of other NEW computer desks, in the same category AND PRICE RANGE FOR THE QUALITY as the USED one I was viewing at this shop, you knew that 170 was over the mark. Almost like they were expecting an offer. You did not make an effort to accommodate me TWICE by offering 2 discounts--no twisting what really occurred, please. I made my first offer in store, and the lady at the desk immediately whipped out her calculator and said "I can offer you 20% + 10% for a price of $123.00" that was effort #1, William K. The phone call later that day, or the next day (can't remember) to JOE/Owner, was just a repeat of what desk lady said to me. Nothing new, nothing different, no effort whatsoever, to ACCOMODATE. And most, if not all, consignment stores, will recognize that a serious customer (one who makes the EFFORT to even offer any thing at all) might be met with a lower price, even if all that takes is a separate phone call to the CONSIGNOR (the seller of the piece) to ask if a further price reduction might take place. It's really that simple. I've been in both positions---offering a lower price than that is in the contract, and having a consignor be called and accept my lower price, and have had that phone call made to ME as the seller, and either I say yes or no. That's the nature of consigning WILLIAM K. I did not "do the math" like mentally subtract 55% off the asking price (because really, who does that?) I offered what I knew was in the ballpark for other NEW similar priced computer desks. Because like I said in the store, and on the phone, I had been in the market for just this sort of desk. I've done my homework, I've looked, and that is how I deducted what a fair (to me, the CONSUMER) price might be. I have consigned many many pieces in many consignment furniture stores, so I know the schpeel. Joe, or William K---whoever you are that wrote this reply to my honest review---you've got it wrong. Read the other reviews here on yelp about your business. I'm not the only one calling your store what it is. And Berkeley? Ha, it's all about, well, some things over others. Maybe a better venue for your shop might be Piedmont? Or even that lofty city, San Francisco? Or, wait, how about Marin? You wouldn't get any backlash there for trying to overprice your goods. Heck, you'd probably even get some ladies fighting over trying to outbid each other on some pieces. Don't be thinking you can pull that dominate dog thing here though dude. Ain't gonna fly. Thank god we did because we ended up getting 4 major pieces and a giant rug in a matter of 30 minutes. The selection and pieces were great and the prices were reasonable. A friend convinced me to check out consignment stores before I bought new from a Scandinavian furniture store. Specifically I was looking for a dining table that opened to 100 inches but closed down to a table about 60% that size. I had found two tables in new stores, loved the table designs but not the light color of the unused wood. Yes, patina would come, I was assured. But I felt discouraged as the table pictures on line showed patina. Then I went to Bay Home Consignment Furniture where Joe and Jill directed me to the larger tables. I found a wonderful teak table with a rich patina and no noticeable damage. In fact it was in near-new condition. My table! Now here's where Joe and Jill really made my day. I did not want the chairs. I hadn't really thought I'd buy anything on that visit. I also didn't want to buy without thinking about what I bought, especially after realizing that the new tables were just too "blonde" for me. First not taking the chairs was no problem and the cost dropped to a substantially satisfying price for the table. Then I was encouraged to run my hand over the whole table AND sit down and stare at it until I felt it was the right purchase. Finally they held the table for me for 24 hours while I made a final decision and then called in with a credit card. Yes, I'm getting the table! I bought it and am now making arrangements to have it delivered after my existing table is removed. And talking to Joe and Jill was wonderful. I never got the big sales pitch. No. Instead I received attention to what I was looking for and why. As I am a bad shopper ... someone who does not go out shopping for fun and doesn't find any aspect of the process fun ... this was a wonderful experience for me. In fact I've decided to ask for help finding the rest of what I'm looking for. Bravo, Joe and Jill ... bravo to my friend who sent me there! read more

If you're a bit more knowledgeable about vintage pieces, mid-century in particular, you'll find the small in-store reference library still very helpful.
