so the reviews i have read are accurate in some aspects, misinformed in many i have seen a man who i assume is the owner based on previous review who comes off as rough around the edges with customers as i browsed who did not care about finesse or sweet talking, with a doesn't give a **** attitude. if i were easily intimidated or had not worked customer service for years i would not put up with him and would walk out.. this is his business style.. if you don't like it there are several other sales people who are very friendly that you can work with as i have. as for the furniture i think people have forgotten what real furniture costs, ikea is what i see people gaging furniture prices off of which is horrible. the costs of real wood and hand craftsmanship is what brings prices of real furniture up. the owner is clearly not trying to run a second hand chincy store so you will see higher prices based on real furniture. you could go in 5 times and see different items so you cant judge a place like urban homes off one visit or personal taste. i have seen beautiful items here, and not my taste personally views as tacky items here. it is 100% worth stopping in if you need that missing unique accent or a run of the mill item. based on what i have seen the prices are fair, and its a lot of fun to walk around. read more

Bay Home is a find of a store. They furnished my whole office with really well-sourced and eclectic pieces - quality and style at a very reasonable cost. And they delivered! The owner Joe has a bit of a spicy New York edge as well as being hilarious and good-hearted. I recently realized he had been the owner of a very high-end store in the Rockridge area years ago. He knows his stuff, and luckily is applying it to providing our community with a huge selection of really interesting and affordable stuff. I purchased a sweet mid-century modern dresser last weekend from Urban Home. They did a great job of refurbishing and the price was very reasonable. They do not deliver, but provide you with a list of deliverers who are also reasonable. I called Jose and he delivered my dresser within the hour - I almost didn't make it home before he arrived! Jose is the sweetest guy too. Went back to Urban Home this weekend because I am still looking for a few pieces and Joe was so helpful - offered me a deal on a solid wood bedframe with headboard. I will be going back at last once/month to make sure I don't miss anything! As a side note: those who say this place is overpriced are not knowledgeable about mid-century modern furnishings. Try going to a small boutique shop in Berkeley or SF . There is one in particular that I just visited on Shattuck - would blow some of these folks minds for sure. read more

I came here for a coffee table but wound up with 2 lamps instead. The store is really nice, as is the collection of furniture they put together. The prices for furniture are slightly out of my budget, but lamps and other objects are generally reasonable. We definitely got a good deal on the two lamps we picked up today. This weekend, I stopped in at this store and found many unique and interesting pieces, from a Charles Macintosh style chair to an Italian leather day bed. I left with a Stressless Recliner and Ottoman in brown leather with teak wood for $480. I wanted just such a chair and priced it at over $2000 new. I am delighted as I sit in my wonderful chair. I wandered in because I was next door at Import Tile and had always wondered about this store. Wasn't looking to buy anything. Great assortment. Lot of mid-century, older, newer. I ended up coming back the next day to purchase a drop leaf dining table and 2 lounge chairs that I couldn't get out of my head. Asked a guy if he could offer a bundled price and I basically got one of the armchairs free. Furniture is on consignment, generally seemed to be of good/very good quality. A few prices on the best stuff may be high, though not for "real" furniture. Many, many prices are surprisingly low. Some very interesting pieces - definitely worth a visit even just for fun. Large warehouse space so give yourself time to hunt around. read more

I was able to find a super sweet vintage filing cabinet here for a fairly decent price ( we tried to haggle with them but to no avail). Regardless, we were happy with our purchase. The downside of the place is the parking; a bit cramped but whatev. . .we'll go back in the event we need some furniture. read more

I've visited Bay Home Consignment a number of times looking for treasures for my new house. I received excellent service from the owner Joe, the manager Jill and their staff. When I told them what I was looking for they brought me right to the table I eventually bought. They also offered to refresh it for me so it looked sparkling new. AND, they agreed to hold onto it until I could arrange pickup which is quite unique as many stores want it out the door or give you a timeframe. I appreciated the flexibility as I wasn't sure how long it would take to arrange for long distance shipping of the dining room table. They also have interested pieces both new and old. I will continue to keep them on my furniture shopping circuit! read more

I'd prefer to give Urban Home a 2.5. I used to quite like the Consignment Showroom in Emeryville on Christie (but they are switching things up) which had better prices and often a more attractive selection but UH isn't bad. Many of their items are laughably over-priced, many are about right and things do move in this place ("new" stuff arrrives regularly). I have expensive tastes but I am willing to wait for the right price or will find another solution. I do wonder how true of a "consignment" store it is, though (i.e. what percentage is actually consigned). If you were to make an offer you'd think they wouldn't have a pat response but would be in contact with the "owner" of the piece. They showcase a new line of mid-century modern-inspired upholstered furniture which one can order but is overpriced in my humble opinion (check out custom places in Oakland or Berkeley before you buy). I stop in fairly often. If you find something you like here and think the price is ok, don't wait around because it won't be there when you get back. Update: I consigned a couple of tables here which sold quickly but with hind-sight might have done much better had I gone the Craigslist route (which is not for everyone as it requires patience and may have some risk). read more

I am a fan, it's true. Definitely hit or miss though! I just got a fabulous rug there for $50. A lot of the stuff is oddly over-priced, I think as a "thrifter", I'm used to seeing lower prices for used pieces, as I frequent the Salvation Army, Good Will, etc.. But I like having all the stuff laid-out in a nice, big, clean space, and I'm willing to pay a bit more for that luxury. Also, the smaller items seem to be priced well. It's the big items like tables and couches that seem too high./ I do think frequenting the place is mandatory if you want to find a good deal, and the sale items are often way in the back, so now I just shoot right over there first, to see what's been put on sale recently. Kind of like IKEA, i go straight to the AS-IS first, then I browse the rest of the store! They were very nice to me helping try to envision (she even measured the couch for me) if this couch would fit in my apartment. Anyway, I will be there once every week or two to see what's new...!! read more

Wow. A whole warehouse full of excellent options, and two incredibly hapless salespeople. The first, so timid I could not engage in conversation, the second, so patronizing I walked out just as I had decided to buy something. A real pity, as this place is a treasure trove of MCM options. I went to pick up a couple of chairs they were holding for a friend, and saw a carpet I thought might do for my son - but the "man on the floor" advised against buying it - "People really have to pick their own carpets." I thought it good advice, so waited until my son had seen a photo of it, then called and gave my CC info to reserve it. It was a bargain: in good condition and attractive. I have no complaints about the service or helpfulness of the staff. I would look there next time I am in the market for furniture. There were some beautiful pieces - dovetail joints, solid wood, antiques - as well as ordinary stuff. Some prices were too high for me, but many seemed reasonable or, as my carpet, a good deal. I think it's reasonable to expect to see some quality decline at consignment shops as people wait to replace furniture because they can no longer afford to. read more

I just received an email advertising Urban Home's sale and unfortunately due to previous experiences I cannot make myself go. I am an actual customer and have purchased furniture, lamps, and art here...even consigned a few pieces...but due to inconsistencies and the way I "feel" after leaving I have suspended shopping here. Joe, the owner, is known among a large circle as "the Douche". He has earned this title due to attitude, unprofessional behavior and tends to make the customer (and his employees) feel like they are uneducated or beneath him. He has a good eye and the store looks good....if he would just listen to the feedback he has received and implement some change he could have a winning combination! Balance effective management practices and genuine customer service with his talented eye for design .... we are the reason you are open! read more

Horrible service. My family and I came in today. We walked in and had to squeeze past the people working. They didn't say hi nor did they acknowledged us. We were the only ones in there too! As a buyer, I've found some good deals and great mid-century items. however as a seller, i couldn't even get a response. apparently they are only interested in mid-century or antique pieces now not good contemporary pieces. That's fine I just wish they would say that so I wouldn't waste my time or theirs on the selling end. Taking a friend tomorrow as a buyer and expect a good experience. read more
