Let me start by saying that I am not typically a dive bar type of place. However, my friend had heard about this place recently and since we were headed to a show across the street at Groundworks, we figured it was the perfect time to check it out. I was a little nervous after having read the older reviews that were less than stellar. Then I realized that it was under new management so maybe it would be worth a visit. We had the good fortune of having Sara as our bartender. She was amazing! I am a very picky drinker, unlike most people who would be in a dive bar undoubtedly who would be happy with anything. I asked if she could make me something that didn't taste at all like alcohol and she stepped right up to make it happen! I like fruity stuff and the drink she pulled together fit the bill. I also had a Jell-O shot and a bag of Fritos. There's a (modern-day version of a) jukebox as well as an old phone booth in the corner which for whatever reason gave me great joy to see. There are also two pool tables. It's a small place so when it gets crowded I'm sure it's packed. We showed up at 5 p.m. on a Saturday night so it was still lightly attended which worked great for us to just hang out, drink, and chat. Ain't no bar better than bay horse. Shari, Anna and the owner Susan are some of the best people out there, as well as the other bartenders I don't see that often are all great people. Some of the other reviews are upset because of bartenders coming out and telling them not to park here. Issue is, you were probably buying weed next door instead, let's be honest. "New from Washington" kinda sets off some alarm bells there not gonna lie. The sign says it all, " No Sniveling." If you aren't willing to deal with being in Arizona, maybe this ain't the place for you. Otherwise ain't no better place than here. read more

I'm assuming it's the owner of the establishment, an older lady, harasses anyone who parks there, even customers. I was a customer who enjoyed it there for the pool and cheap drinks but after only parking for a minute trying to check text messages I got cussed out when all I wanted to do was go in for a quick beer. On a Saturday night, most bars are packed. Unless the bar has a bartender who chases customers away. On past occasions, Shari proved herself to be brash, but usually in an entertaining way. Not last night. My friend and I arrived and were served promptly, ordering a pizza in addition to our drinks. We were soon joined by a couple my friend knows. After awhile, an obviously drunk man stormed in and was served nonetheless. He saw our pizza and wanted to order us another (we didn't want it) and one for him. My friend gave one of her friends a few bucks for the jukebox. Then the loud drunk man tried to give another friend $20 (for the jukebox? I'm not sure.) She didn't want it, so he tried to give it to me. I didn't want his money, either, so I put it on the counter and said "Here's a tip for you, Shari," and she scooped it up. My friend at the jukebox asked us for suggestions and I said "something fun - Mellencamp." My friends agreed that was a good choice but Shari screamed "OH HELL NO! YOU PLAY THAT A**HOLE AND I'M SKIPPING IT!" Sure enough, when a Mellencamp song came up, she screamed and made a big show of skipping it. The drunk man's pizza came, but unlike when our pizza was served, Shari didn't give him plates, napkins, grated cheese and red peppers and wasn't acting like she was going to, so I made a big show of giving him plates and napkins we didn't use and the grated cheese and red peppers, which resulted in Shari screaming at me that she just didn't do it fast enough for me. My friend had put 3 Mellencamp songs in and when she ceremoniously skipped the second one, I said, "OK, then give that $20 tip back." She slammed a $1 bill in front of me. I crumpled it up, tossed it and left - no tip from my wallet. I had never seen Shari act so horribly, but I'm not a regular there. My friends said they weren't surprised and said if they could have stopped me from giving her that man's $20, they would have. Lesson learned and we're not going back if Shari is working and I'm not likely to go back unless something changes. I give one star because at least our Digiorno pizza tasted good. We took some satisfaction that another Mellencamp song would come up after we left to ruffle her feathers. Hurts so good, Shari. read more

I dig this place quite a bit. I spent last winter in Tucson mostly and most of last winter in the Bay Horse... ;{) The Staff rules, super nice, heavy pourers and all beautiful. The jukebox is worth a sh*t, It's got Sabbath, ZZ Top, Judas Priest, Uriah Heap, Master of Puppets and even some Black Flag... You really can't go wrong there. Pool tables and foosball... Frozen pizza and peanuts... A sweet smoking porch and some of the nicest and funniest bar fly buddies you could ever ask for! (Hiya Marco!) Oh yeah, also a giant f*cking chair. The servers are awful and so rude. They don't even try to be nice and they say discriminatory things don't go here.

I have recently turned 21 on March 18th of 2010 and I pretty much spend most of my nights at the Bay Horse Tavern. They only have 3 beers on tap PBR, Bud-Light and Dos XX Lager (a pitcher of PBR is only $5 for a whole 4 pints!) and they have a large selection of beer by the bottle. EVERYTHING hard liquor wise and a small cheap wine selection. A old school back porch for smoking with misters in the summer & an outdoor heater in the winter. They serve up Tombstone pizzas for $7, 4 Meat or Supreme, salted nuts & unlimited popcorn. read more

HORRIBLE environment and people. I came here with my boyfriend and his cousin this women immediately assumed we weren't potential customers and told us to leave and that we could not be there. The Bay Horse is not a dive bar, it's a neghborhood bar. It's great for playing pool, listening to tunes, eating peanuts, and drinkin' brewskis. On the jukebox is the Ramones' Too Tough to Die. You can drive the old folks crazy by playing "Endless Vacation" on loop 5 times, but be prepared to defend yourself if you do so. There's also a really big chair to get your picture taken in that is supposedly famous, but I don't quite get the point. read more

Pretty good as smaller neighborhood bars go. This is a well known little bar- seriously, everyone in Tucson I talk to has heard of it. There's a big chair inside to get your photo snapped on. An outdoor patio to go smoke and drink and it's covered. It's a cozy small bar with pool. The bartenders seem to know their stuff. You can order up some pizza to eat, pitchers of beer are great, and it's got a nice homey atmosphere. Lots of regulars here and a mix of people just looking for a good place to chill and meet friends. read more

How lucky do I feel that this bar is only a 2 minute walk from my house!? Sharp, funny bartenders, games to play, outside seating and even a few books to read!? Oh the Bay Horse is such a wonderful place. The crowd is always entertaining, to talk to or just admire from a corner booth. The atmosphere is welcoming to anyone from crazy groups of bachelorettes, to couples who want to cuddle, to hungry Americans enjoying free Fourth of July BBQ. definitely a dive bar - has obvious regulars and the bartenders know if you haven't been there before. CASH BAR. no real drink specials, but pitchers of PBR are 5 bucks. 4 bucks for a tall gin and tonic (well). 4 bucks for a Newcastle. smoking patio is private and you don't even know you're right up against Grant Rd. prices aren't fabulous but comparable to other similar places. I love Bay Horse. It has a no-nonsense and old-school vibe. If you're a smoker, the outside patio is perfect during the summer because of the misters and ample seating. There's also bar and booth seating inside--in addition to games, TV, and a jukebox. (FYI: It's not usually too busy when I go, primarily because I prefer going on week nights earlier in the evening) I've made a lot of great memories here. What a dump! I mean that in good way. The Bay Horse has been an iconic dive bar in Tucson for some time now. I was there. Yeah, it was called the '80s. Ford was President, Nixon was in the White House and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-a-wall town in what is now called Utah. Some fella from Colorado shows up, starts making so called "improvements", right? Before we knew what hit us, the streets are running with latte. It got so bad that a fella that liked to, you know... smoke a little grass or drink a little ripple. Crow like a rooster, maybe challenge the mayor's son to a gentlemen's duel, was "uncouth, against God." More like bad real estate values. Stumpy had to go! Dont go changing Bay Horse! read more

The Bay Horse is a great neighborhood bar. The prices are so low, they must be selling at cost. The bartender is the very epitome of what a bartender should be, quick with a drink, a joke, or a smoke. Beyond cheese, I know, but that was actually the experience I had with her last night. The patio is something to behold with furniture seemingly stolen from a grandmother's backyard. The patrons... well they are mostly drunks. But the kind of drunks that have good conversations. Unfortunately, you can't rate zero stars... Where do I start? Okay, well, you would think being new customers to this bar they would be a little more accommodating to want repeat business. NOT! This is a Friday night, tonight to be exact, February 22, 2013, I came in to meet some friends and ordered a few drinks for myself and my guest. Upon ordering 2 mixed drinks and a beer the bartender asked me who the other drink was for and my identification. I don't have an issue with asking for my ID due to not being there before is understandable; however, she asked who the other drink was for. I said, "Excuse me?. I am allowed two drinks per State Law, but okay, the other is for my husband." She insisted to see who I was ordering for. Again, I was very cordial to this "girl" at this point and pointed out who the drink was for. Then she continued to say , "Well, I don't know who you are and I have to keep track of all you Motherfuckers!" AND, I QUOTE HER EXACT WORDS. This poor excuse for a BARTENDER, A HEAVY GIRL, WITH BLACK CURLY HAIR AND GLASSES, DOES NOT understand the concept of customer service let alone how to bring in and keep new business; hence, more money for the bar and her because we tip typically tip very well. Needless to say, we finished our one drink and left and will never return to this bar. Nice lil neighborhood and yes it is a dive bar. I specialize in dive bars they are my favorite ad they are al usually a neighborhood bar. Good drinks, great outdoor patio, usually friendly bartenders. Pool tables are very cramped. Notin the best shape either, but they are still only 50 cents to shoot, so live with it for that price. I've had a couple issues over the past few years, including once waking up in hospital while having my face sewed up. read more

I love this bar - it is perfect in every way. Totally relaxing and no attitude or like they are trying to be anything more than a neighborhood bar. Been 3 times now and the 2nd time there was a guy at the bar with his dog on his lap eating peanuts and the 3rd time we killed a few pints and left and folks we hadn't even spoken to said good night to us at the door. I used to go to places like this in the sticks in Florida - I like this place and willingly could waste my time in it. read more

First time here. Very cool spot. Felt right at home the moment I walked in. Place is small and a total dive, so I kinda knew what to expect, brought me right back to my childhood when bars like this were the norm. Decorations from the 70's-80's era, very charming. Very cheap prices on drinks; small pitcher of Rolling Rock for $3 yields about 3 medium glasses full, can't get much better than that, got drunk for $6 plus tip, can't even get one tiny watered down drink for that price anywhere else. Great place for on a budget. Music was just the right volume, and was a great variety. Decent little outdoor patio area where you can smoke and drink and chill. Everyone was very cool and friendly. Will come back here whenever I'm in the area for sure. read more

I have only been here once, but I liked it. It is a true, honest to goodness dive, not the fake kind of dive that is so popular nowadays. Beer is very cheap. My wife hated it and refuses to return... apparently there was some issue with water overflowing in the women's rest room. But that's what keeps the yuppies out. It's all good. read more

Last went here in 1972. It was a popular place, especially on Thursday evenings right after we watched batman on TV. Think it became a strip joint for awhile. Glad to see it is back to its roots. Lotsa great memories. read more
