All the toppings I got on my bowl was very fresh. One of the things that stood out to me the most was that this place served masago and also eel sauce. Tried the Pasadena location recently due to a poke craving. Overall it was ok, but the fish itself was mediocre which kind of defeats the purpose. First off, they do follow COVID precautions - all employees are wearing masks and they have a socially distanced line that extends out the door since the interior is relatively small. Ordering is easy, pretty standard prices and toppings for a poke place. Service was friendly - was able to use the Yelp check-in for a free soda. Although they initially charged me for it anyways, when I pointed it out they quickly refunded the credit. Where it fell flat for me was the fish. Salmon was ok, but the ahi tuna was clearly low quality. It had that mealy mushy texture with chewy sinew and a paler color that was a turn-off. This was the first poke joint I've tried that offers a marinated savory tuna as an option, and after trying the regular ahi I understand why. You might be better off trying the spicy tuna. However, on the plus side they do have pineapple dole whip, which I've only had before in Hawaii. A bit steep at $4 a cup, but it is delicious and worth trying at least once. In conclusion, fairly standard poke place but won't be my go to, as the fish seems to be lower quality. Ironically, the next time I come back will probably be when I want some more of that Dole whip! read more

Bay Poke is one of the newer poke shops to hit Pasadena, but I can see it staying for quite some time if they keep doing what they're doing. My friends and I wanted to grab something healthy for lunch on a weekday, but we didn't want to go to the poke places we normally frequent. We decided to give Bay Poke a try - and we were all pretty happy that we did. Bay Poke is located in the same plaza as Vons - parking can get super hectic if you come during the busy lunch rush, but luckily you can park at Vons if you plan to do some shopping afterwards. There are a good number of tables inside the restaurant, but there's also some tables outside if you want some fresh air. So what makes Bay Poke stand out among other poke places is their variety of toppings and the fact that they offer pineapple dole whip as a dessert. There's only 2 sizes: regular ($9.95 with three scoops of protein) and large ($12.95 with five scoops). The portions are pretty big, so if you're not a big eater - a regular should be more than enough. Base is the normal white or brown rice or a spring mix. You can also choose to do half and half if you wish. They have a variety of raw and cooked protein (which you can then choose to mix with sweet onion and cucumber). Then add the sauces (they definitely have more sauces than other poke places), sides (extra for avocado), wet and dry toppings, before topping it off with a drizzle. Of course my poke bowl always looks crazy full compared to my friends' after we're done ordering. I like to max out on toppings, so I almost always try everything. I concocted my poke bowl to be quite unique - salmon and octopus, scoops of pineapple, corn, cilantro, etc. I do think that since the food is served in a bowl, you don't get as much compared to it being served in a box. Having it in a bowl also makes it harder to eat since you can't really mix everything up if you're eating it at the store; however, I did enjoy the bowl, especially with the ponzu sauce - tangy and not too salty, which went well with the fish. Salmon was super fresh and cut in fairly big chunks. Octopus was not too chewy either, which I appreciated. I like that they have pineapple and mandarin orange as choices for toppings - both are quite interesting, although I stayed away from the orange. Sometimes bowls are not sauced enough, so the drizzle at the end definitely helped with flavor. Wish I had enough appetite for the pineapple dole whip, but I was pretty full. If you check-in on Yelp, you also get a complimentary fountain drink. Workers were fairly efficient and friendly, but I felt like they rushed us in picking our toppings because of the line. tl;dr - I would come back to Bay Poke if I ever get a craving for poke in the near future. I probably wouldn't eat the food in-store though, and opt for taking it home where I can shake up the ingredients instead of eating it out of that compact paper bowl. Coincidently the last couple places I have lived at had very good poke places within walking distance. Being at my current place for over 1.5 years, I finally discovered Bay Poke during the pandemic. Note: My hubby and I have been multiple times now and it's during COVID and the experience is with order online and pick up in store. FOOD: There is a wide and great selection of fresh fishes, toppings and sauces I order the small bowl with spicy tuna, salmon with brown rice. I put all the mix ins and spicy mayo and ponzu sauce and all the sides and toppings (except ginger, cilantro, and jalapeños). I often change up the drizzle sauce depending on what I'm feeling that day or moment. It's so fun to build your own bowl! I also like that for the pickup orders are proteins are packed separately to keep the base from getting soggy or mushy. PRICE: This may not be the cheapest poke place I've been to, but the price is understandable and fair for how much they give. SERVICE: The service has been pleasant every time I go. I give them my name and they grab the base and build out the bowl quickly. I like that the to go order is not just sitting there. "Dying" at the fact that this is my second poke review in about two months. Right now, that's a lot for me. Bay Poke, what is going on? Seeing $12.45 for a small on the menu, I almost choked. I get the rise in prices due to our economy~ right now, but that was really pushing it. I had a bowl from a place in Arcadia recently, and I'm almost certain the regular bowl I got was the exact same price - or less - with three scoops and way larger portions. A small bowl here is two scoops - and, my God, the portions for everything - including toppings - were almost embarrassingly small. Am I sounding harsh right now? To top it all off, the quality is completely down the drain. The albacore had no taste, was a weird color, and the texture was mushy in the worst way. Salmon was an alarmingly very red-orange color. I've had extremely fresh fish in the past and never, ever has my salmon looked like that. Customer service was tepid at best. Scratch that - it sort of sucked. A few months ago, I would have given this place five stars in a heartbeat. I've even touted it to friends as one of the best poke places I've had in the area. I tried bay poké because I was craving some good fish and there isn't much in East Pasadena. I would return here to eat again. Their bowls are more expensive than Poke Salad Bar, but I also feel like their quality of fish was better. However I still like PSB's dressings/sauces more. It's nice that they have spicy choices and also cooked choices for those that don't eat raw. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. To update my old review, this is still my favorite poke place. Great if you're in Pasadena or San Marino. Get your bowl how you want it, but I always get the sriracha mayo and lime cream drizzle, but not as a drizzle...I like those in my bowl, wet, my fish swimming in those sauces. The real standout: the shredded imitation crab meat. The flavors are perfect, slight garlic, not fishy, super savory, has flavor but not salt...can't figure out what it is but it has captured my heart. Still one of my top favorite poke places in the area! I took a poke break for a few months and just got back on the craving recently. Once my poke craze came back, I immediately thought of Bay Poke. Portions are still generous while the quality is still superb. Overall, not too much has changed over the past year. The only things I would note is how they now offer spicy salmon and marinated tuna. They also have the Five Star rewards (which I don't think they offered since the last time I visited). A new discovery of flavors that I love are their wasabi wave and sweet chili. I also really love adding their mandarin oranges for some sweetness and dried onions for some crunch. I ordered a small and medium bowl and customized the toppings/add on but it seems they don't follow along with the exact toppings that you request.
