Having tried BB.q chicken for the first time in LA a few years back I knew I was in for a real treat when I noticed it being built in Kahala! A worldwide Korean fried chicken chain with its first franchised location in Hawaii! Newly opened in the Kū'ono Marketplace across of Kahala Mall. Right next to Kahala MKT by Foodland and Purvé doughnuts. I ordered 1/2 order of golden fried whole chicken (8 pieces) and 1/2 order of honey bbq wings(9 pieces). Wait time was 20 min minimum per sign by register, as they make everything fresh to order. I got to this to-go. Boxed up nicely with vents on top, this ensured the order to remain extra crispy during car ride home. Chicken was juicy and delicious, crispy and flavored nicely! The garlic was amazing! The crispy whole chicken had different thigh and wing pieces. Only complaint, compared to other places chicken pieces is on smaller side, sides and rice is needed to fill you up. Highly recommend both items to try tho. Will def be back to try the other options and the sides on another cheat day! Cheese ddeok bokki? yes please! Expensive but excellent Korean fried chicken! The breading is perfectly crispy and they do a good job saucing the chicken up. They have a ton of sauces available to choose from but I do really enjoy their secret sauce. The half order is $18 and is 9 wings. It's plenty for a lunch portion but it is a little on the pricier side. There is inside and outside seating with K-pop on the TVs inside. The service isn't bad or good, just average. I first heard about this place because i heard it was good in Seattle but didn't get a chance to go on my trip. I was so excited when I saw one opened up here, so we went to try them. It's a little more expensive than other Korean fried chicken places on Hawaii, but this place was totally worth the price. We ordered half order of the secret sauce wings and half order of gang-jeong wings ($16.99 for each half wing order), cheesy tteokbokki (11.99), and rice ($1.00 per 8oz serving). We ordered online and got there right when they opened. It took approximately 40 mins for my order to finish. Also note, if you order the tteokbokki, be careful because it will spill if you tilt it lol. Luckily they put it in a separately bag for us because it spilled a lot in the bag. The tteokbokki was excellent and def recommend. The chicken was very flavorful and I would def get it again. The secret sauce had a good level of spice and was difficult to stop eating. If you have a high spice tolerant, than it won't be spicy for you. If you cannot handle spicy but want to try it, maybe get the original chicken wings with the sauce on the side. We ordered the original fried and the honey garlic. Just a warning, their regular original fried has a touch of spiciness so be mindful if you have little eaters. The honey garlic flavor was so juicy when you bit into the checkin and the honey sauce was not too sweet or too thick. My mouth is literally watering right now. So the prices are decent like $17 for 8 pieces and the portions are not huge but standard. Their fries coated $5 but soooooo good. Another spicy level warning on their toppoki! The buggah is SPICY but my teenage son and hubby are spice fans so they gobbled that up. The Mochi pieces are on the thin side tho. Only because I love me a thicker, chewier topokki. I got to try takeout from BB.Q Chicken for the first time a couple weeks ago. A good friend said she liked this place the best out of all the Korean fried chicken places on the island, and wanted to get it for lunch. I love Korean fried chicken so I was excited! We got a half order of their cheesling wings, a half order of their soy garlic wings, an order of ddeok bokki (added ramen), an order of sweet potato cheeseballs, and two orders of their pickled radish. It came out to a little over $60 so it was a bit pricey but it was enough for three people, and we were all stuffed! Since it was takeout, the wings weren't hot anymore when we ate them. The cheesling wings had nice flavor but weren't crispy anymore. The soy garlic wings had a crispy glaze and bold flavor so I liked them more. I am sure I would have liked both more if I ate them right away. The ddeok bokki and pickled radish were pretty standard. I found the sweet potato cheeseballs delightful. They were warm, crispy, and a great dessert. I would definitely give this place another try. Hopefully next time, I will get able to try the wings when they are fresh out of the fryer! read more

If you want to save when purchasing chicken here, do not order online. The online services are not free. Chicken is great but the online ordering is not honest. They say no service fee which is correct because it is hidden in the price. For example, I purchased the 9 piece fried chicken. Their menu says $18.99. However when purchasing online, the price goes up by roughly $3.50. You cannot order directly from the restaurant and you have to use one of their online services such as Grubhub and Clover. So the only way to save is to go directly to the restaurant and order in person then wait 30 minutes for your order. Came home and decided to try the bb.q in Kahala... it's terrible compared to the store in Irvine. The Kahala chicken doesn't appeard to have the same spices and it just doesn't taste the same. It just tastes like sweet and sour chicken you can get at any Chinese restaraunt. I ordered the Honey Garlic and GangJeong (I wanted the spice!) and both were just so disappointing! The GangJeong tasted almost exactly the same as the Honey Garlic. Where's the spice??? The Irvine store GangJeong had pieces of Jalepeno peppers in the sauce. The Kahala store had none! Service wasn't all that great, everything was pretty much self serve, you get your own food, napkins, utensils, etc. On the pictures it looked like the food was close to authentic Korean food which to my disappointment it wasn't. The taste was OK it wasn't bad, just OK. The spicy rice cakes was more liquidy, ones I had at other places would be more thick and sticky, enough for me to dip my other dish into the sauce. But to their defense I think they make a big batch, because on their menu they have a bigger portion where they put noodles into the spicy rice cakes. We had their golden chicken and secret sauce one, the secret sauce one was kind of sweet and tangy; it's listed as medium spicy, which it wasn't. The golden chicken was actually tastier than I had thought, that was better than the other flavor we got. The Cream Cheese ball was to die for, I'd probably just go back there just for this...if I'm completely honest. Overall it was just all hyped up for something very average. Some walk-in customers who placed their orders after me received their orders before I did - not sure why. I got half an order of golden fried chicken, and half an order of honey garlic. The honey garlic has a kick to it (although it doesn't indicate so on the menu) - I can't imagine what the ones that are actually labeled as spicy on the menu are like. The chicken was good, and of course it's best to consume them while they're fresh and hot. Prices here are a bit higher than other KFC spots on the island, and IMHO it's not my favorite place for KFC. Let me preface this by saying I don't have expansive cultural experience regarding Korean food. I have no idea if it's common for their version of BBQ chicken to be overtly sweet or if sugar is a staple in all savory dishes, etc. That being said I had the cheesling fries and the hot spicy chicken sandwich. Both were inedible after a couple of bites -- not for any quality reason like undercooked or overcooked food or stale ingredients, etc. (In fact, the brioche bun on the sandwich was amazing.) I couldn't finish the meal because it tasted like everything, including the chicken, had been coated in sugar. The cheesling fries did have cheese, but the sweetness was overwhelming -- sort of like if someone gave me fries with Parmesan dust and then just flung sugar all over it. (Is it supposed to be a combination of cheese and Riesling? I do not know, but Riesling pairs well with cheese when you eat one followed by the other, not when blended together.) The sandwich bun was fantastic, I didn't realize the slaw came on the sandwich. The slaw was, same as the other food, packed with sugar. Even removing some of it and the chicken was still far too sweet. I don't eat bone-in chicken (I don't often eat meat, so take all this with a grain of salt) and this was one of the few offerings on their menu that I thought would suffice. No idea what kind of chicken was in the sandwich; I figured it would be a chicken breast like most other places use, but it looked more like two cutlets that had been smacked together before being fried. I felt horrible about throwing it all out because I hate to waste food like that. My previous fave Korean chicken place was Bonchon, and this sugar explosion did not compute for me. My brain was just overwhelmed with confusion. I probably would've 1-starred this but it was a to-go order that someone else picked up and paid for, so I can't remark on those two things. read more
