Two stars might be generous for this place. What beach cafe has going for it is a great location, outdoor seating and a cool name. You see this place and immediately you want to like it. Unfortunately that's where the positives end. Against better judgement we decided to stop in for dinner tonight because we saw a sign outside the restaurant for a lobster special on Mondays and thought this might be fun. We sit down outside and get our menu then are told by the waitress that they haven't gotten lobsters in a couple of months. Not sure why they haven't changed the sign, but moving on we decide we should try something else. I am in the mood for fish, so I order the wild salmon with corn (instead of mashed potatoes) and broccoli. It was $26, which is pretty expensive and what I would expect to pay at a nice restaurant. When my meal came out it was obvious it was terrible quality. The corn was off the cob and clearly straight out of the can and the broccoli came right out of the freezer. Neither had much flavor. The salmon was incredibly basic and had nothing to it. My fiancé ordered the chicken ($23) and could barely eat it. Other than food, the service was fine but that's not why we came. I definitely don't think we will be back here. With so many other great spots on the UES with outdoor seating, better food and better prices, I think this is a pass. read more

I love this place. It's old school in all the good ways. Last night 7/20/18 was my third time there. A friend and I like to go to Beach Cafe after a Soul Cycle class on E 63. The food is always good, the service is excellent and a decent value. Last night we sat outside at their very welcoming sidewalk seating. We had a crab cake special appetizer that was so good- all crabmeat inside, no fillers, and a delightful array of grilled veggies. We also had a lot (probably too much) of a refreshing light (easy drinking) Pinot Grigio. My friend had a burger and I had my old go to of the shells with broccoli. Simple dishes that tasted great. We also admired other diners eating grilled salmon, it looked delicious. We had one waiter the entire time who was very attentive. The owners bought us each a glass of wine, which is always a nice touch. They honor happy hour prices on wine at the tables, which is great. The also have a Wednesday night 1/2 price bottles of wine. Cakebread bottle for $30, sign me up! The interior is a wee bit dated, but I kind of like it. It's comfortable. I can't wait to go back for one of the Sinatra nights. It sounds kind of charming. read more

The website says casual attire and my fiancé stopped in for a beer at lunch time. They told him he needed a collared shirt (he had Vineyard vines shorts on and was not dressed like a slob). I've been in there with scrubs on and they never said anything to me. For crappy food they really shouldn't be picky about who they let in. I will not be coming back for business lunches. read more

The service was wonderful and attentive and I really enjoyed the food. However, I've never felt more unwelcome or looked down upon by restaurant management. It's New York in the summer time and 90 degrees outside, but both my girlfriend and I were told to remove our hats and find "shoulder coverage" for our tanktops. We're sitting in the sun, outside on a patio. There were other tables also wearing similar sleeveless items like us, but for whatever reason, we were the only ones singled out. The manager went as far as to lean around the corner and take our photo, but as soon as I went to confront him he ran back into the restaurant. Not to mention the fact that even though there's a No Smoking sign, the table behind continued to smoke and management had no apparent issue with that. You know, I read the other reviews on the way there and I was a bit nervous. The service was fine - we had the same waitress the whole time although she would disappear but we weren't in a rush so I probably wouldn't have found it remarkable if I didn't read the other reviews. It took a bit to get our first round of drinks but she did explain it was busy inside. My friend and I both ordered the cobb salads which were huge and deliciously fresh. You could tell the bacon was real crumbled bacon not fake stuff. I had a frose which also tasted very fresh. All in all, I look forward to going back and I'm glad I ignored the other reviews. read more

Strange ingredients, lack of normal sides, odd service, overcharged bill. Very strange meat in the turkey burger; I felt like a domesticated animal being fed out of a can. No fries. Overcharged on the bill. Bland, on top of that. Friend had strange-looking meat burger (looked burned/wart-like). Other friends had ugly omelettes carelessly made, bland. They had to ask for the toast that was supposed to come with it. The ingredients seems under par & the preparation & presentation sucks. Wait staff is very gruff in their physical movement. Even going to the bathroom, I almost got run over--and at the table they were reaching here & there. But they were not rude, either, so... Two stars for getting seated quickly & not being rushed out. I just had lunch at the Beach cafe and it was delicious. My employer and I started off with two cups of lobster bisque, which were to die for. Then, I ordered a California Cobb Salad, which was HUGE. I had to take more than half home with me. My employer ordered the Lobster Roll with french fries and absolutely loved it. Furthermore, the service was great. This is definitely a place to bring a client or have a nice lunch or dinner date without the hustle and bustle and lack of service that you find at many places around the corner. Although the crowd is slightly more mature, the bar is beautiful and extensive with exposed brick and a laid-back feel. Unfortunately, the restaurant is behind one of the construction sites for the new subway line, but the noise wasn't bothersome whatsoever. I'll never come back to this place because it has so many rules like they are actually paying for me to eat there. If you want to split your bill with friends then you have to pay an extra 5$ for it Excuse me what? It's the first time I see something like that in the restaurant! Also, their brunch special includes three drinks which are probably made of gasoline because we couldn't even drink that. I seriously have no idea where they got alcohol for it. Ugh. Not good. Stopped in here on a weekday afternoon with my 4-year old for a quick bite. There is no kids menu or even any kid friendly options and when I asked about it, the response was a shrug and a "nope." Atmosphere was uninspired and energy in the restaurant was quite low. I have been here a handful of times and the food is fine however today earned them a single star for their despicable policy to deny wheelchair patrons a seat in the front space of their outdoor seating area. Instead they offered my mother (who is in a wheelchair) and I a table around the corner away from the view of the passing patrons. Upon inspection it was hidden from the street by bushes and appeared to be near the back door of the building. We again requested a seat in the front that was accessible, available and not obstructing but were again rebuffed by the hostess as this is the policy for "safety" reasons. If these seats are any more unsafe than a seat within the restaurant then we may as well not ever eat there at all. We decided to leave and will likely never return. read more

You got to go here for there excellent brunch deals on the weekends. For $20 you can have a brunch item and up to 3 cocktails or beers on draft. For just under $30 you can get the same deal but with steak and eggs. We originally sat down at the bar to order a drink unaware about the three coming afterward. The place seems like it has a lot of history with pictures of frank Sinatra on the walls, there's a piano and sometimes they do live music. Then we got sat on the outside patio which was better because it was a nice day out. My girlfriend could leave there full, satisfied, just a bit tipsy for twenty dollars and myself for thirty. I recently had brunch at Beach Cafe with my mother and we were appalled by their discriminatory "dress code" policy. It was 85 degrees on a Saturday afternoon and 3 men looking to have brunch outside were turned away because one was in a tank top. Meanwhile I was in sneakers, leggings, and a spaghetti strap workout top. The man in the tank top was much more appropriately dressed than me and there was no reason he and his friends shouldn't have been allowed to eat outside as well! I became embarrassed by my own attire which I had thought was okay for a casual outdoor brunch. Other women were also in crop tops, gym clothes, etc. I understand nice restaurants having a dress code, but this was clearly unfair and inappropriate. Even our waitress agreed she is embarrassed when she needs to enforce it. The management of Beach Cafe should strongly reconsider their discriminatory, double standard dress code. read more

This is my family's go-to spot for an easy dinner when my parents are in the city. Simple menu with something for everyone: dad loves the steak, mom and I each have a favorite salad (poached salmon-yum!) and we change it up from time to time with the pastas and sandwiches. I wish they would get some more soup options- I don't recommend the chicken vegetable. You'd think they would change it up with a minestrone or vegetable. Great people-watching...there's always a mysterious fellow or lady at the bar and you just have to wonder what he or she has been up to all day. read more

Excellent find on the Upper East Side. Service was quick and attentive and the proprietor was a gentleman. Portions are generous, and the menu has many options. Martinis were great and the espresso was a nice exclamation point on a great meal and evening. Will definitely look to return soon! read more

The Sinatra cabaret which goes on every Sunday night at the Beach Cafe on Second Avenue and 70th Street in Manhattan is small, intimate and great fun! Steve Maglio, who sings the Sinatra songbook in black tie but points out he is not "an impersonator," is relaxed, authentic, and personable with a talented two-man back-up on piano and bass. Before each show, he hands out a list of about 100 songs and asks the audience to make requests, which he picks out of a hat as he goes along. The $89 cover takes care of not only the show but a three-course dinner too. The food is fine but nothing special. But the show itself is worth the price of admission. read more

Beach Cafe is a terrific place, for food, ambiance, and service. We love it. Yummy! I would like most particularly to praise them in this tragic era for dedicating their time and supplies to start a program of offering free hamburgers to all health care workers. They are located just a few blocks from three major NYC hospitals and their many annexes, all of which have been on overload fighting the pandemic of coronavirus. They have a gofundme campaign they have just started. Restaurants are closed now in the city, but we go for take-out to support their contribution to those medical workers who are risking their own lives to save all of ours. read more

Apparently, despite being called the beach cafe, it being the afternoon and having a casual atmosphere, they have a no sleeveless shirt policy, which they had forgotten to mention. The Beach Café is a neighborhood gem. I have been Beaching it off and on for almost 20 years, and I have always had a fine meal, served by charming staff (one of whom has be there almost as long as I've been a customer). Their menu offers something for everyone and will not disappoint. My recent favorite is their lobster roll, generous and perfectly seasoned, accompanied by crispy fries and a nice salad. A brunch favorite is the croque monsieur. The thin-crust pizzas are to die for, and the chicken caesar salad is always fresh and generously portioned. And half-priced bottles of wine on Friday nights . . . WINNING! The interior is warm and inviting, with fun banquettes along one wall and what seems to be an antique wooden bar of a bygone era. Even when crowded, the Beach is cozy. Sure, early in the evening the crowd can be on the older side, but if you're not looking for a wild, raucous time, this is a plus. Even though I live in the neighborhood, I tend to avoid Second Avenue because of the subway construction, but I will make an exception for The Beach! I just hope they survive this long, intrusive construction project and emerge from behind all the scaffolding, etc. to see the light of day. It would be a sad day if this Beach were to erode, as have many of their neighbors on the Avenue. Almost embarrassed to admit this, but recently, I went alone for a nice, relaxing Saturday brunch. If I can give it a zero star I would. Tried to come here for brunch this past Sunday, when the weather was hot and steamy. You would think the beach cafe would be most appropriate because after all, it's called the "Beach" cafe. My guy friend was already seated, he was wearing a casual shirt and shorts. I arrived with the B, we were both in shorts and tank tops. We proceeded to greet our friend when the waiter comes by and said no tank tops, but we can put a towel to cover your shoulders. I looked at him and said "are you kidding me? It's like 90 degrees outside. I then pointed out to the waiter that half the females in the restaurant were wearing tank tops, so what's going on? The manager (older gentleman) comes by and says it's the restaurant's policy that gentlemen have to be in a shirt. I asked what kind of sexist policy is that when you only allow females to show their shoulders? After a few exchanges back and forth, my friends and I walked out annoyed and asked why the restaurant is called the beach cafe? How ironic! P.S. Yelp says it's casual attire. If you are going to have a ridiculous policy, please make it known upfront and people won't come here in the summer! read more

If you want bad food, glacial service and Pepto Bismol for dessert, then Beach Cafe is your answer. Seriously, how is this place even open? I don't blame the servers, I blame the kitchen that clearly never took a cooking class. Call me crazy, but I like my food cooked in the middle, and not icy cold, and when I order tortellini with peas and mushrooms, I'd like those peas and mushrooms to not be invisible. And, no, bringing them to me after I call out the mistake is not acceptable. Just sayin'. Follow up to my post-I was up all night with food poisoning. Everything tasted very fresh and homemade from the sugared blueberry muffins in the bread basket, to the fresh fruit and yogurt that came with our eggs. Everything from the app to the main entree was horrible. The calamari was fried in old oil and there was too much batter. The main course was chicken campania and it was burnt.
