What a great spot! Very friendly staff and very tasty food. The Mussels were recommended by the waitress and were some of the best I have ever had. The malted milkshakes were fantastic as well. They also made an impromptu vegan dessert for our table. It was an amazing Apple, 'Carmel', and Rosemary pizza. It was delicious! This cafe is cozy, but not campy. personally why five stars? I prefer good food but without a clean, non-pretentious and relaxing context for eating, the place isn't worth writing about. So much said; I look forward to stopping here in the evenings to enjoy a good meal and music. (These days; F,S, part of Sunday in winter and expand in spring to most days). Sometimes we're rushing in off the ferry and don't feel like cooking, or we're just wanting a cozy and romantic evening. We know we'll eat well, relax and dress as we are. Same for the Sunday or Saturday breakfast/lunches. The owners Tess and her husband have taken this formerly frustrated and slightly pretentious stop and turned it into one of the pleasant "home" stops. We often eat in Bellingham or up in Vancouver, BC but there are innumerable times when we've said as deciding foe dinner or here on the island we ask, "why not just relax and enjoy?" so we stop there rather than cross the water- It's unique in that it's friendly to children and I've never experienced a typhoon of tempers or shouts and screams that I've seen in some spots. The Beach Store Cafe's prices are reasonable, sometimes a little high, but the staff are excellent, human and engaging. Most the long term staff are reliable, polite and contribute to the pleasure of eating. Locals are major visitors and off season (tourism) form the major clientele, a hospitable one with diverse tastes (a challenge for the cook). Tess' husband is an excellent chef and had the good sense to take the sausage out of the former owner's steamed mussels or clams. i am not fond of how they prepare fish and chips; the crust id too breaded. He makes excellent soups, chicken, delicious pizza, wonderfullll crust. the soups are always pleasantly filling with fresh herb flavors. Tess and Café family are often asking and adjusting their menu to the tastes of clients. Their wine and beers are suited to the meals or a plain relaxation. If you're into liquors, you will not be favoring -- since they don't serve hard alcohol. good, still unpretentious meal. Their hours feel limited to me, but that's because the mornings when i go out to have coffee, the Cafe doesn't open until 10. The "Sausageburger". is open similarly on weekends and some weekdays. and good for earlier breakfast and coffee times, but very limited indoor seating-- That is also unique and delicious, but not open evenings. My husband and I eat here whenever we're on the island. We LOVE the Beach Store. We decided to take a little day trip to Lummi Island. After driving around and exploring a few beaches we decided to stop here for a bite to eat. It was a beautiful day so we decided to sit on their front patio. Service was great. We enjoyed one of their fabulous pizzas. Crust was perfect. Crisp and a little chewy and not so thick. The toppings were so flavorful. We got the chorizo, green olive and onion pizza. So delicious. We also got a Caesar salad. Both were quite amazing and I will be craving this pizza in the days to come. Food was amazing. The place isn't stuffy or pretentious. Cute. Quaint and plenty of parking. You can even walk from the ferry if you don't bring a car. We will definitely be going again. read more

We arrived at the café at 11:45am on Saturday for breakfast and the restaurant was about 20% full. There was lots of parking available and as we walked towards the restaurant, we passed a cute beer garden area with a small stage for live music. SERVICE: 3 STARS. Per the "please eat yourself sign" at the door near the parking lot, we walked further into the restaurant deciding where to sit. We passed a few of the chefs without receiving any acknowledgement and were ¾ of the way to our window table at the front of the restaurant when a waitress greeted us cheerfully. She immediately brought menus and took our order. Food and coffee were served quickly. However, by the end of our meal, the restaurant had filled to capacity and was understaffed (our waitress was waiting for additional staff to arrive so she was the only one serving the entire restaurant). When we asked another staff member for a coffee refill, he placed our mug behind the counter and forgot about it. We waited about 10 minutes, then asked our waitress for a refill as we paid for our meal. She was so sweet and apologized (even though it wasn't her fault) and then refilled our coffee which we took outside to drink in their beer garden to free up our table for other guests. FOOD: 4 STARS. We came in with adjusted expectations since this café was on a small island but I have to say this place exceeded our expectations. We started with delicious Stumptown coffee - drip for my husband and I had a vanilla soy latte. We then shared the Spring Veggie and Pork Belly Hash and the Cottage Cakes. The pancakes were delightful - lemon curd was a perfect balance of sweet and ever so slightly tart and paired well with the strawberry-maple sauce. The pancake itself had a great texture - not overly fluffy or mushy but rather just firm enough and served hot off the griddle. The pork belly hash was flavorful and had more meat than we expected. However, one of the two poached eggs was overcooked and I wish they provided more hollandaise sauce. Overall, I was happy because I often have to decide between (corned beef) hash or eggs benedict for the hollandaise sauce but this time I got the best of both! PRICE: 4 STARS. We paid $41 including tax and tip for 2 entrees and 2 coffees, which I thought was slightly pricey but reasonable considering we were on an island. AMBIENCE: 4 STARS. Very casual, come-as-you-are island-style café with a chill playlist (some reggae, John Mayer, etc). We chose a window seat so we had a great view of the water and ferry. OVERALL: 4 STARS. The food was great so we would return again, hopefully on a sunny day so we can enjoy outdoor seating on the porch or in the beer garden. read more

This is considered the island's restaurant, and for good reason. Great food and great people. No, the service is not perfectly punctual all the time, but why the rush? Our usual is the fish and chips. Good size portions make it a great value. But the taste and consistency is superb. Others like the wood fire pizza. My wife and I have eaten at the BSC sporadically over the last 22 years. The owners, managers, wait staff, chefs and menus have ebbed and flowed through the years like the tides of the Island. Last week we visited the Beach Store Cafe knowing the owners had hired a new chef. We didn't necessarily choose to patronize BSC because of the new chef, we didn't relish the idea of cooking and dishes. The food was very carefully prepared and delicious. The new chef accommodated our request for something other than a red sauce pizza and created an out of this world avocado creation..........Yum! Also we were able to order off a Happy Hour menu. Two glasses of red wine, a gourmet pizza and two fabulous vegetable salads. The biggest new surprise was the tab, only thirty bucks. Over the last twenty plus years we have never walked out of the BSC for less than fifty bucks when ordering dinner and wine. So in my humble opinion things are going in the correct direction. Charming country cafe on Lummi Island right near the ferry. We had a breakfast voucher from our stay at the Willow's Inn the night before. We chose to sit on the front porch looking out at the majestic view of Mount Baker across the channel. The server, a young woman in her 20s was so kind, helpful and genuinely friendly. It's nice to get that kind of service which is unusual where I am from! We decided upon the blueberry buckwheat pancake (1 giant pancake per order) and the Ferryman's omelette (crumbled sausage, bacon, onions, green peppers, cheddar cheese). The omelette included a huge portion of crispy potato halves.. these things are addicting! There should be a warning. The buckwheat pancake was stuffed with blueberries; it was excellent, although only one large pancake per $10 order is overpriced.. there really should be two for that price. The coffee was rich and delicious. I would definitely recommend the cafe for an occasional splurge. Sit out front and enjoy the view! read more

Last night of summer vacation, and we stopped for a late night meal after whale watching. We were tired and hungry not expecting the really great meal we enjoyed. The food and laid back atmosphere is wonderful. To get the this place you take a short and easy ferry ride and it's right off the dock. So you could easily walk, ride bike or take your car on the ferry. FYI they no longer serve liquor, but still have good wine and beer choices...although I really miss the Bloody Mary's. Also PLEASE start serving the clams for lunch! If you get there for dinner obviously get the clams. The pizza is a 9 out of 10 and (my husband would say 10/10) don't let the "gluten free" part of the fish and chips scare you, you wouldn't even know they were gf! read more

Went here for breafkast after a wonderful dinner the night before at Willows Inn. I was excited to try it because of the new chef they hired. Breakfast was good when we came last year but they definitely went up a step up this year. I decided to try out the eggs benedict and wow. The eggs were poached perfectly, the hollandaise sauce was my favorite part. Loved the roasted potatoes as well. My mom got the eggs benedict as well and loved it. In all the years I lived in Bellingham, to many in college and moving back years later after graduating and getting married, I had never been to Lummi island. First, I would recommend it. It's a beautiful place. We'd completed our drive around the island. Done a little wine tasting and had some time before the ferry so we hit the Beach Store Cafe. We got a nice table on the deck over looking the road and Hale passage. We were surprised by the menu, it wasn't what we expected, which was just burgers. It was more eclectic and interesting than we expected. We ordered a couple microbrews and started with the Thai Shrimp cakes, which were wonderful! Cam had ordered the potato gnocchi with blue cheese cream sauce, spinach and butter roasted walnuts. I had a pizza, ham/mozzarella/blue cheese/scallions/apple cider syrup/tomato base. Both were outstanding! Small tip - dipping the pizza crust into the gnocchi blue cheese cream sauce is divine!! Try this place! read more

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I was pleasantly surprised here. We visited on a rainy afternoon and the cafe was warm and inviting and also has a great view of the ferry. The menu is limited, but has a good variety of options. My fiance decided on the burger. The patty was pretty thick, included blue cheese and a fresh bun. I also tried a bite and it was delicious. I went with the fish sandwich. The fish melted in my mouth and the fresh tartar sauce was great. We also had a choice between fingerling potatoes or a salad and we both went with the salad. It was a pretty size good portion, the dressing was really good and the fresh cracked pepper really made it pop. We'll be coming back! read more

Darling little old structure with an amazing view of the water, the ferry crossing and Mt Baker. We sat on the front deck and enjoyed lattes and a delicious standard breakfast. The menu is simple standard American fare: bacon and eggs, pancakes, omelets, etc, but it was very good. The staff was casual and friendly. This is not a five star high end restaurant, but it is a five star small town cafe. We were both very pleased with the experience. We enjoyed nice conversation with other patrons and the price was very reasonable. Next time on the island, we will visit this quaint restaurant again, probably a few times. Enjoy! read more

Only if you really have to. Eat here, that is. It's amazing that they can charge what they do. The burger - a skinny slab of gray, flavorless meat, the fish & chips - another small portion, coated in very thick crunchy stuff (GF), pizza is ok - but also small. Service is really lacking - it's always so strange how servers can see you and totally ignore you. There's really no where else to eat on the island, so if you're stuck and the store is out of bags of chips (which is also likely) then maybe eat here. read more

The Beach Store Cafe is one of those funky little local places with the best food around. Not fancy... but nice. Food's not gourmet... but it it's amazing. Having worked in and around restaurants most of my life, I've come to appreciate a restaurant that is authentically "local." That's why I love this place. Fish and Chips, Steamer Clams (when in season), Pizzas, Nachos.... and the desserts - WOW! And the wine an beer are dirt cheap. Every time I eat here... This is a funny place. Though the quality of food is great, the portions are inconsistent and the glass of water smelled so funky, it was hard to drink (in May, at least). We had eaten here before and the bowl of chowder called me back like a siren from across the strait. Dining with my wife, we did as we frequently do - order something dependable - chowder - and something riskier - halibut & chips - so we know we both get to eat at least something. In this case the chowder held up, but the fish & chips were disappointing. Though the portion of fries was generous (too generous), there were only two bits of halibut (marvelously made, though they were) each about the size of my thumb. I am not all that picky, but this was remarkably scant. Again, the chowder continues to be among the best I've had, but the prices of everything else makes me leery to shell out the cash for the risk. Good luck. read more

This was the perfect spot for Rehearsal Dinner in August 2015. Tess was beyond wonderful and professional in her presentation of the menu. The appetizers were fantastic!! The salmon dinner was a treat beyond belief to all of us, especially out of town guests. The lemony dessert was my fave. In fact...I am thinking I might make a trip back just for that! An earlier reviewer complained about the "fries" being "strange baked potato-like objects." A simple review of the menu reveals that they are roast fingerling potatoes. Not French fries. The problem is that this restaurant is aimed at the upscale visitors to the island who don't mind paying a little more for good food and a nice ambience. Not to people who want cheap burgers and fries. It was recently acquired by the famous foodie destination, The Willows Inn. They may have a tough time of it in the off-season. I started with an ice cold IPA and a delicious bowl of steamed mussels. Then I violated one of my rules of dining out: NEVER order fish tacos at a restaurant unless they are either famous for them, or somebody has recommended them (and not the server). I ordered some spot prawn tacos. The prawns were barely warm, the tortillas were stone cold, the slaw topping was good. The side salad was good. All in all, it was okay. read more

I am constantly craving their salmon and chips--it is something special! My husband also enjoys the burgers with local Lummi beef. He tried their pizza and didn't find it anything out of the ordinary though. Their salads are okay but not amazing. I have been here many times in the last year and almost always order salmon and chips. Their huge salmon sandwich is great too. The local salmon is so tender and delicious! The food isn't cheap ($13 or so for cod or salmon and chips) but it is tasty and I always have half of my meal left over afterward for lunch the next day. read more

Had the fish & chips app (really a meal), along with the Mac n cheese with chorizo and asparagus. My husband and I went for an 18 mile bike ride on the the island and then stopped at the BSC for lunch. We thoroughly enjoyed our Lummi burgers, his with cheddar, mine with a wonderful bacon-onion marmelade. Yes, bacon-onion marmelade. You should try it. All of this was tucked between a yummy brioche bun. The burger came with either fingerling potatoes or a side salad. We went with the latter. The tab for the dish was $10. The place was not that busy and we had to wait forever to even be acknowledged once seated and then service after that continued to be slow.
