Came by for dinner and it was a little busy. Plenty of tables filled but we were greeted and sat immediately. We sat by the window which had a beautiful view of the beach. The interior of the restaurant itself feels very retro, beach house-y which was cute. For food, I ordered the lobster and shrimp Mac n cheese, and the apple cobbler for dessert. Mac n cheese was super saucy and cheesy. It was a bit on the salty side for me, but I still very much enjoyed it. The bits of shrimp and lobster were fine, not huge chunks or anything. The dessert was real yummy as well. Good texture and good flavor. Service was a little slow, but our server was so naturally hilarious and friendly we didn't mind. We stopped in for a mid-afternoon "linner" and were warmly greeted at the front desk by one of the servers, who gave us a choice of windows with chairs or booths away from the windows. We choose windows. We split a bowl of clam chowder. It was a bit thicker than we like, but there were plenty of clams and the seasoning was on point. She ordered fish and chips and I order battered shrimp tacos. Both were perfectly cooked and the batter was exceptionally light and crispy. Neither of us could finish our plates and felt super guilty about leaving the rest behind. Next time, we think we'll pay the full price but ask for half-orders so as not to waste food. As to price, some other reviewers complained about that. We realize that most restaurant have to charge more due to the huge spike in grocery and fuel costs over the past couple of years. We were in Birch Bay for the day and my brother recommended we try CJ's. This was a really convenient location by the water with a lot of parking. Our party of 10 was able to get a table right away and our waitress was great- super attentive and handled our large party without issue. I opted for the grilled mahi mahi tacos and they were delicious. Super fresh and flavorful. Others in my party weee raving about the fish and chips. This is a great spot for drinks as well. My wife's 94-year-old grandma loves CJ's Beach House. In what looks like an actual old beach house near the water, CJ's Beach House is a vibe. There's plenty of seating inside, including private rooms and a bar, but if the weather is nice, sit on the outdoor patio. Service was excellent! Our server stayed on top of our orders and food despite a good flow of patrons. The food was better than we expected! The prawns and cocktail sauce was good and the B.P. Burger was big and delicious! Even the French fries were great. My wife enjoyed her mussels and our eight-year-old daughter loved the mac and cheese. The only thing that wasn't great was the margarita. This is always a go-to for our family when vacationing at Birch Bay! The deck was full when we came for lunch, but we were seated immediately at an inside table for 7 people. Our server was delightful and very attentive. I opted for a small Caesar salad, oyster shooter and French onion soup. LOVED the soup - not overly salted and just the right amount of gooey cheese, onions and bread. I would pass on the shooter next time, though, as it was just too big for the glass and added cocktail sauce. The others loved the fish and chips, and my husband said the Waygu beef burger was the best he's ever had. One daughter is vegetarian and, sadly, she had very few options to choose from. The service was decent and the servers were friendly. They offered good suggestions and were patient when checking in. The food itself was decent. Though the fish and chips were EXCELLENT. They have been called the best fish and chips around so our expectations were high, but they lived up to them. The fish was seasoned and fried beautifully and the chips were crispy and very tasty. We also ordered the ribs which were soft and had bbq sauce, but probably about average. Their creme brulee dessert though was bomb. The ambiance is casual and an older style restaurant with a dated look. They have booths and also seating with armchairs by the window. Good for a family dinner or casual date. The price was reasonable at about 20-30 per person with steaks being more. Overall, GOOOOOD fish and chips, average environment, but good for casual and family friendly eats. CJ's has gotten expensive! $23.00 for a London broil beef dip. Fancy name for a French dip. I will say the caramelized onions make it better than the average French dip. But that doesn't make it worth $23.00. Then they only give you a 1/2 cup of Au jus. When I asked for a second au jus I was charged a $1.00 for another 1/2 cup. When I questioned the waiter about why they only give you a 1/2 cup, I was told that that is their normal portion. I guess so they can charge you a dollar for another 1/2 cup. Really? Is au jus that expensive that you have to charge for more? As if the French dip isn't expensive enough. Probably my last time at CJ'S. read more

I had high hopes but was disappointed. Clam chowder was good but not great; roll that came with it was just OK; I would've really enjoyed a nice, chewy, flavorful sourdough roll. Nice thing was that both the soup was hot and the roll was warm. The Caesar salad was tasty, with lots of Parmesan cheese. Our server was nice, took our order and served us, but other people cleared our plates from the table, and one young man bid us a friendly good evening. Kudos to him. The worst part of it was the endless Dean Martin type music. Really?? In a "beach cafe"? Pandora type music from the early- to mid-60's? It went on and on... even as we were leaving. We got the feeling that this restaurant is a wanna-be upscale place, but it's not. Just because all the servers dress in black doesn't make it upscale. It used to be a favorite spot of my grandpa's (aka Grumps) and so bringing family from California and my grandpa's close neighbor friend was a great experience. Fish and chips. Really good fish and chips. REALLY REALLY GOOD fish and chips. I've done the Europe thing, fish and chips in Dublin and London, and these are on par with the best. Perfectly fried batter, perfectly cooked and moist fish, with fries so crispy loud they caused a Tsunami across the street on the beach. The fish was crispy enough to be picked up and eaten, first bite to last. They provide malt vinegar because of course they do, and it's delicious with the fish. And fries. Heck it was pretty good when I got some on my finger. Service was well practiced with Chris's excellent fishing skills, to a really quick kitchen with perfect food. Well this was a first. The first issue was being told I could not have cheese on the side of my burger instead of on because "they don't allow any modifications, it's either cheese on or off". Then we were told if we wanted to share a meal it would be an extra $3.50. We have some allergies, and we're told we couldn't make any substitutions, or take anything off( seasoning,etc). I had the salmon, but it comes with Pesto, and I asked to have no pesto, and was told "no". Besides them not being accommodating, it's a beautiful view, but the benches inside could be updated. My son had the steak burger, and seemed to like it, and another gentleman had the lobster Mac and cheese and said it was good. While I know it's a smaller business, I would recommend accommodating the needs of the people. I would have been fine paying extra, to not have pesto on my noodles. I will not be back. read more

I've heard people rave about this place so thought I'd try it out with my family. Very nice location! It's right across the street from the beach so great view if you get a table outside. We waited about 20 minutes on a Saturday afternoon to be seated on the patio. Well worth it. Inside was pretty empty so we could've been seated right away if we had chose to sit inside. Our server was very customer service friendly. I always appreciate good service! She offered drinks right away and bring them out promptly. As far as the food, it was OK. Personally it wasn't as great as people would rave about it. Nothing super special or outstanding to other restaurants. We may be back but not anytime soon. read more

I have been here on several occasions so its about time I yelp about this place. Located in Blaine its a bit of a drive from Bellingham but well worth the trip. Service have been consistent good. Pro tip-- eat out on their patio deck if you can. Great view of the beach and often you can hear the live music from next door Black Cat Brewery if you are there during the weekend. Food is pricey but you are getting good food and you're paying for the location and view. Dessert is a must if you have room after all the food you eat.
