We stopped in for lunch and immediately loved the vibe at Bean Bag Cafe. Good, classic pop over the decades music mix and not too loud. TV's on both ends, lots of window seats and a fireplace in the corner. Though we had a sunny day with mild temperatures this would be the perfect San Francisco spot on a cloudy, rainy football Sunday. There were several people working on their laptops and it's clearly a fave neighborhood spot as several customers while we were there were greeted by name. The staff is warm and friendly. A new person was being trained and she did a great job. They have a large menu on the cutest menu boards and it was tough to decide what to order. My son had a burger with super delicious fries. He liked the burger but the bun kind of fell apart and for a teenage boy that killed the rating a bit. He didn't love the fries but my husband and I (and we don't usually agree on fries) LOVED them. My husband had a burrito bowl that he said he'd give an 8.5 out of 10. The flavor was delicious (it looked delicious!) but he said that the steak was a little chewy. I am not a meat eater do next time I'm here I want to try it because it looked so yummy. I saved my review for last because I would give my "Golden State" salad an 11/10 if I could. It is officially my favorite salad in San Francisco. I did cut the lettuce into smaller pieces when I got it because I love a chopped salad and honestly, that is the only thing that could have made it more perfect. The taste was absolutely DELICIOUS. Woke up late on Saturday morning and got caught up in social media doom scrolling until afternoon at which time I found I was too lazy and hungry to try to figure out making breakfast out of whatever was in the house apart from the daily oatmeal I can cook on autopilot (if you can even call that cooking). Which is why I found myself at the bean bag cafe and asking what might be a recommended omelette. La Mancha hit the spot with its layer of egg enveloping the flavorful mix of grilled chicken, green onion slices, mushrooms, and stretchy mozzarella cheese. The caramelized crunch of the home fries gave a great contrast to the soft center and went well with the omelette along with the ketchup and hot sauce. The toast with butter and jelly added some sweetness to the large savory meal which probably could have fed two smaller people but since this is going to count for breakfast and lunch, I gave myself a pass. The afternoon was not as packed as the mornings I've been there on the weekends which is understandable for a cafe. Let's give a toast to the neighborhood cafés that have survived San Francisco's transformation over the last 20 to 30 years. There aren't many of them. Beanbag is one of the survivors. Homely, basic, friendly and classic. You will find better, small batch, bespoke, coffee, and breakfast sandwiches elsewhere, but you won't get the personality. You won't get the sense of a neighborhood institution. The folks here are friendly, there is free Wi-Fi and a pretty extensive menu. Everything is fine. I usually go for breakfast and Tim never disappointed. If there's anything I don't like about it it's that there are always techies in here having their little techie meetings. My gf had gotten an eggs Benedict plate. I had the Popeyes eggs Benedict which came with red onions and spinach and I had an extra cup of coffee. We also shared a stack of buttermilk pancakes with strawberries. Everything was delicious. My gf said her potatoes were a little burnt...but mine were fine. They were crispyyy. I think the reason why I gave this place 5 stars was because we were having such a rough day but when we came back and spoke with (what we assumed was) the owner of the restaurant, he made us feel 100% better. He made us feel welcomed and was very enthusiastic that there food was going to warm us up. The place does get a little crowded but is still a nice little area to do some homework. We just opted to eat on the outside patio instead. The workers are so kind and sweet and communicative. Had a nice time for breakfast here while visiting SF. Wife ordered a breakfast plate with eggs and pancakes and I ordered the huevos rancheros. All the food was great overall. I know this cafe has been around since at least the early 1990's because I remember coming here with some bros when I was a youthful whippersnapper with perfect hair ready to conquer the world. I have to admit I wasn't aware they serve cafe food like a Crepevine and even have lookalike rainbow chalkboard menus.
