Was off on this random Friday and she wanted to get brunch so this place came to mind and we were off. It took a little long to be greeted and seated but there's always a crowd so I'm guess that would have been the reason. We placed our order and it came out pretty quick. Hot, fast, and fresh. Good food yes. Great food, no. But this is a classic diner which is affordable, offers good portions, and friendly service. The problems come with your expectations. When you go out you want a great meal. Bear E Patch offers what you could have made in your own kitchen. Even the over cooked bacon. The menu is five pages with a wide range which means they do nothing great but a lot of things well. Now they do have cakes and pies that are very well done and some homemade breads worth trying. However, be prepared to smell like grill grease when you leave after sitting in the dinning room. I can't say I won't be back, but this place is average; just know that going in. read more

I had high hopes for this place. It really wasn't anything special. I got the beer-battered fish with fries and hush puppies. The batter around the fish was super hard. I personally like light and fluffy fish. I didn't order a salad but my friend asked for one and all it was was lettuce, green pepper and tomato. Their side salads are pre-made and stored in their dessert cooler with plastic wrap over the top. Maybe I did order the wrong thing on the menu. Breakfast might be their specialty. They have a very large menu and something for everyone. We have two servers and both very nice and attentive. I probably won't be back unless someone wants to go there. read more

There is a wait that can seem overwhelming when you arrive to Bear E Patch, but do not fear! They burn and churn through the line fairly quickly. Don't expect a fancy atmosphere, but do expect to be well fed and happy when you leave. My boyfriend and I came here on a Saturday around 12pm. They do breakfast all day here, which is a plus. For breakfast, I like eating a little bit of everything, so I ordered the Sue's Special. 2 eggs, potatoes, one pancake, and choice of sausage, bacon, ham. I ordered my scrambled eggs and opted for the sausage. Boyfriend ordered the Lowcountry Omelette with grits and a choice of biscuit, Engish muffin, whole wheat, white rye, and a few more options. He decided to order the biscuit an for $1 more, swopped out the grits for potatoes. Food came out quickly and hot. The sausage came as two patties and tasted good with the eggs, potatoes, and pancake. Everything was standard, nothing special, but completely satisfying. I had a few bites of the Lowcountry Omelette and really enjoyed it. It came loaded with diced ham, sausage, peppers, onions, tomatoes, and melted cheese. It was huge too! Service was quick and it's the kind of place where you bop in-and-out. Pay at the counter and go on your merry way. A true dinner feel with nothing fancy, but that's what makes it great. Had to stand in line to pay way too long stood in line longer than it took to get my food. They put your ticket at the register and people go up to pay and the cashier needs to fine ticket if they don't know there table number slows it down. read more

We enjoyed a breakfast on a Thursday morning, a little after 9:00, and the café, a fairly large room, was filled. We were promptly waited on. I ordered the country steak special, and a friend ordered Sandra's special - eggs, grits, bacon and French toast. My generous piece of country fried steak included a hefty dollop of white gravy. I opted for the fried potatoes (extra crispy). It also included two eggs and sourdough toast (very good). The only drawbacks were the noise level and only moderately good service. Anyway, it is welcoming, the staff are attentive and friendly and the group I was with was unanimously pleased, which isn't the norm. I recommend anything with the grits. The grits are amazing. You read that right. The humble grit is a feature item, for flavor, texture, presentation, the whole thing. Wow, simply wow. The folks wouldn't tell me whose grits they start with, so it must be good. I will give this spot five stars after I go back 2 or three more times and sample some more menu. This is a solid breakfast experience. It's always packed. Closed on Sunday's. They somehow get you in and get you out pretty fast without making you feel rushed. They don't take reservations either. Ask for ketchup and other condiments when you order because they're not on the table. This is a no frills place where you come to get some cooking that you could get at your grandmother's house. A long line outside the door on a Thursday morning is always a good sign for a breakfast restaurant. We were seated in about 10 mins and the waitress had our drink orders almost immediately. The breakfast menu is two pages (perfect) of all of the normal southern diner plates. I had the country fried steak, egg and cheese biscuits with home fries. It was very good and the portion was more than enough. We sat for a while and watch the locals come and go and my coffee cut was constantly being topped off. Great experience. Today was our first visit to the Bear E Patch Cafe. We noticed it in passing but hadn't eaten here. It seemed like a small place that wouldn't hold very many people, but I sure was wrong. It's a very open space with tile floors, booths and tables plus a pastry case where one can take a look at the scrumptious looking cake and pies to eat there or take away! The menu is huge with a lot of breakfast items as well as sandwiches and specials of the day. The place is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and the menu remains unchanged---you can eat breakfast all day here! My husband and I chose to share a Montana omelet----bacon with pepper jack cheese. It was cooked well and came with a side of grits which were prepared nicely, very creamy and cooked the old fashioned way! Coffee was fresh and a server was always around to make sure we had refills. The food was very good! I had the Sara Special, which was 2 fried eggs, bacon, grits, and french toast. Everything was cooked as ordered and very enjoyable! The syrup and butter came in those small plastic containers, which was a letdown- especially the syrup. It had a nasty taste. The coffee was likewise nasty and avoidable. The dining area is small and looks like an old school diner, but with erasable whiteboards displaying different menu items. The menu, itself, is well made and extensive. My Star Rating would have been higher, had it not been for the sloppy checkout system. You don't get your check, you have to go up to the cashier and tell them what table you were at, then they proceed to go thru a pile of tickets. I noticed while eating that the checkout line was rather long. When it was my turn to pay, the wait had not improved. The staff were all friendly and likable. Although the food was good, which I would compare to a decent Alex's Restaurant, and although there were other menu items I was curious to try, the checkout alone was a miserable experience and I would not go out of my way to return because of that. I would of given this place 4 stars except there was a piece of aluminum wire in my wife's mouth from the French toast. Pancakes were good, there butter and syrup are fake, which is why I was going to give it 4 stars. But now I wonder what else was in the food i just ate. Added after ... I will probably come back, they gave us our meal for free, it was from there dishwasher apparently, I don't feel too shaken because the same thing could happen cooking at home, but they should get a new brush, or whatever that was that came off. read more

No fancy deconstructed dishes or lattes here but fresh daily specials. I got the crab cake Benedict and the crab was SO fresh and plenty in it--just enough filler to bind the crab together. Loved it! We stopped in around 10:30 for breakfast today and while there was quite a wait, it was worth it! The prices are very reasonable and the portions are huge - there was no way I could eat my entire omelette AND the toast AND the grits that came with it! They have these country fried steak, egg, and cheese biscuits with gravy that are huge and so good! The staff is very friendly and all worked tables together. The BearEPatch is a place with some negatives but many more positives that give it a solid 4 in the diner category. Three trips in and it is clear to me that Breakfast is trully their best options. Negatives: Meats. First trip was pot roast and it was very bland and needed lots of love to be decent. Sides were mashed potatoes and green beans and they were fine. Second trip: Cheeseburger. Very basic, pre frozen patties, no toppings. Third trip: pork chops and eggs. Chips were not seasoned and not very good. Eggs were good. My son was with me each time and got breakfast options. He enjoyed his, pancakes, french toast, eggs, grits and toast. Sausage was large and flavor filled. Patch Potatoes were also very good. Lesson learned, breakfast is the way to go. This is my second review. I said I would come back for the desserts and I did. There were three of us and we all try the ice cream's. Different flavors, and they all were pretty terrible. They were all freezer burnt and the server claimed that she was aware that they tasted freezer burnt but thinks that it's because of the way they take the ice cream out and put it into a different freezer and move it back into this one. Ok? That was disappointing to hear that the staff was aware that their food was not very good and they weren't bothering to do anything about it. It also seemed as though we were an inconvenience to the staff in being there because that meant that they had to actually do something. I don't mean to sound harsh but this is the second time I've tried this. place and I have not gotten any better opinions on it. read more

I've been to this place a lot over the years and is constantly good. Use whole eggs unlike a lot of places now and knows how to cook them unlike a lot of places now. Best omelets in town. A little pricey on some but they've kept quality up. I understand their costs have gone up considerably. The servers are all nice and you always refilling drinks before you even ask.
