I was so incredibly excited when I saw the massive signage about a Beard Papas opening in Castro valley! I've been able to try the famous cream puffs in SF and couldn't wait to have one closer to home. Finally, the awaited day arrived and we came for the festivities on Opening day! The line for cream puffs was ENORMOUS! We were not too far back in the line but still waited a good hour at least for our order. Thankfully we brought chairs to sit in and wait. Not sure what the hold up was even tho some families bought a couple of boxes at most. In theory, the puffs were sitting in the case premade and all they had to do was fill them? But maybe bc it was the first day. Anyway, we got to try the green tea and cookies and cream puffs. They were delicious! I think I enjoyed the green tea more bc I like Asian flavors. Loved the crunchy/crisp texture of the puff itself. Filling wasn't overly sweet tho the icing was a bit sweet. With tax, each puff was about $5. Too bad they didn't have all their flavors today :( and only original filling. But understood with SO many customers today. I actually felt like the cream puffs we had today were better and fresher than the ones in SF. During grand opening, we were gifted a reusable bag and coupon for original cream puff for a return visit. Appears to be family owned by a very sweet lady, Ye Ye. I always love a good Beard Papa's cream puff, so I decided to try this one! Easy to find parking in a lot outside, and there was actually a small line when I came! The lady at the register was super sweet and helpful when I had trouble making a decision! They have daily special flavored cream fillings and Mondays are Vietnamese coffee (!!!) so I had to try it. I recommend getting it with a plain shell because my friend had it with a chocolate shell and found the coffee flavor underwhelming. My plain shell with coffee cream was SO GOOD I would get more!! I also tried the new honey butter shell with vanilla cream, and it was so tasty. The shells usually hold up pretty well texturally with good crunch, but this honey butter one took it to another level! Super crunchy and added an extra sweet sweetness, almost bordering on too sweet?? But not quite. So it paired really well with vanilla. I haven't seen these flavors in other locations yet, so I'm excited to go and check whenever I see another store! read more

I went to a beard papas for the first time in Cupertino and wasn't really impressed but i decided to try it again since it's so close to home now. Went today after work and was able to snag some puffs with ube cream filling , and they were pretty good. Brought some home and it was a hit in my household. The location of this one is inside of the CV Marketplace. There's a bunch of parking and it was right on the lower level near the front. The guys working were nice but i had to repeat my order a few times. That was a little frustrating but im guessing cuz it's a little loud in there it makes it a bit difficult to hear. I didn't realize they had different cream flavors everyday. I will say this locations puffs definitely tasted way more fresh than Cupertino's. I don't go to Castro Valley often but I was pleasantly surprised to find this place inside this marketplace. I ordered the Ube puff filled with vanilla cream and the original filled with coffee cream. They were both delicious, light and flaky with a dense cream that's not too sweat. Now, I make a trip every couple of weeks just to satisfy my cravings--it's that good! My #1 favorite flavor is the Honey Butter, but unfortunately, it's only available in-store (which just gives me an excuse to visit!). When ordering online, you can't go wrong with the Churro or S'mores flavors--they're both incredible. And if you go in-store, you get access to their daily flavors, which is such a fun surprise! I'm a big fan of Beard Papas and have been for quite some time. After the San Francisco locations closed down, I was heartbroken. Seeing a Castro valley location brought me hope again, although I am not really a fan of Castro valley and its wide streets and ugly appearance. The only reason this location doesn't have 5 stars is because the limited fillings available--they have vanilla then another filling that changes everyday. I was so looking forward to a chocolate filled churro puff or a cream brûlée puff but neither was available that day. Furthermore, the cream puff could've been filled a bit more with that delicious cream. The service was great as I ordered 10 different puffs and all were executed correctly and quickly. The marketplace it is located in is cute and lovely with sushi and wine tasting available---it seems like Castro Valley is trying to step it up and shed its stigma. I'm here for it. I'll be back when I can as I am a true cream puff lover and hopefully they'll get the resources to have more filling flavors available daily. read more

My first time at this Beard Papa's it took me a min to find it cause I didn't realize it was in a small food hall. But once I realized it was easy to find! I got lucky and there wasn't anyone in line when I walked up but a big line formed behind me. I came specifically to try and gudetama collab! They were both tasty and cute! But quite expensive, it was $37 total for only 6 of them. I'd say just get one of the gudetama ones and regular ones with it so it's not so pricy! The ladies working in the store were very nice too! Reportedly the world's best cream puffs, from an Osaka, Japan based bakery, so I was thrilled to hear that one would be opening up in Castro Valley. I came during their opening week, so the flavor options were limited. There is a generous amount of cream custard filling, and if you like that, you will love these cream puffs. If you find that might be overwhelming, as I did, then the overall tasting experience is a bit imbalanced. I didn't find these cream puffs worth the price tag, but that's subjective. First time that I've been to a Beard Papa in at least seven years. The prices have gone up a bit but then so has the cost of everything else. When they first opened, I think they only offered a single style of creme puff with vanilla, chocolate or the monthly special flavor, perhaps matcha or strawberry. Now are many more flavors of puffs to choose from. The filling choices are Vanilla, Green Tea, Chocolate and a Flavor of the month. Service was friendly and efficient. I ordered two each of three different flavored puffs. Each was packaged individually, and they were presented in a box. I got Oreo Cookie Crumble and Churro, both with Chocolate Filling and Honey & Butter with Vanilla Filling. They were as delicious as they ever were. But at $28 plus tip for six Cream Puffs, it'll be a bit before we return. read more

Been waiting for this place to open! My sisters and I used to go to the one in San Fran a lot and so happy we now have a location in east bay. Stopped by after a work day to get a well deserved cream puff. I got the ube filled w vanilla cream and the boyfriend got the churro filled w Vietnamese coffee cream. Finally got one of these on our side of the bay! We use to drive to San Mateo once in a blue moon just to get these calorie full treats! They are as good as I remembered. Super light weight and super delicious. Dangerous combination. I can probably destroy 4 of these without even blinking. I tried their Oreo cookies and crème one since it's new to me. It was delicious as expected. I feel you can't go wrong when you add Oreo cookies to any dessert. Anyways, the kids loved it too. They couldn't finish theirs so I had to take one for the team and finish theirs. No food goes to waste! Parking is plentiful. They have a decent size lot in the back. Was craving a cream puff for a virtual galentine's date and picked up their limited raspberry cream puff. Took it home and at it a couple hours later. The shell was a little disappointing as it was pretty stale (I came at end of day) so it's probably been sitting out. The cream however was light and delicious with some fresh raspberry flavor. Paired really well with the chocolate dipped shell for an indulgent treat. They also filled the puff with a ton of cream so I got some in every single bite. Located in a marketplace, this beard papa's location is super clean and fresh! I've been here a couple of times with my mom and it's always a great dessert or small sweet snack. I've had beard papa's in San Francisco and San Mateo a while ago but each location didn't taste as fresh as this location. Grand Opening Day! Earlier in the day, the line to try out Castro Valley's newest addition to the Castro Valley Marketplace was down the block and around the corner with people lining up at 8am for a 10am opening. I was not one of those people. I heard people waited up to 3 hours! I popped by around 7pm and the wait time was about 20 minutes. The staff was super friendly (even after a non-stop line). The location is small but was super clean, especially for as busy as they were all day! Everyone was in good spirits and graciously thanking everyone for their patience and waiting. The cream puffs were very yummy! They were packaged well in a cute little carry case. We bough churro, Chocolate, Oreo and original. I'll update the review after we've tried them all. I came on the opening day and regretted that I couldn't spare time to wait for the line to be shorter. I wished I could upload video to justify what I really meant. I came back the following week and yes I finally got them. No enormous line but a few people ahead of me. The offering on the cream at the beginning period is only vanilla (the staffs said there are many filling flavors coming in the next month). I got green tea, original, and churro. I couldn't tell you about green tea and churro but original is always my fav shell and the vanilla is also my most wanted filling. The lady who filled cream was upfront pumping them in the puff as you ordered. Since it is not coming fresh out of the oven, the flavor is still considered good. I took my first bite and I said "very crunchy". The amount of filling was filled in every single bite. I personally like warm crunchy shell and the room temp filling (slightly chill is acceptable). However I would have to give them four stars for first visit. Will try again some other day at the opening hour for DAILY fresh bake ones. As always, please support the local and yes it is the best cream puff store I have tried so far. Thanks for opening closer to my home and early enough for me to swing by on any day. read more
