I do not know how I have lived my entire life without knowing what a Beavertail is. This is what I would consider to be the perfect dessert. It is sweet and warm, but not too heavy. It was like a churro and a funnel cake, but it wasn't at the same time. I'm trying to explain an experience that to me was so incredibly unique. The inside of the shop was tiny and they have what I would consider a small to medium size menu. They have knickknacks that you can buy ice cream and different Beavertail flavors that you can choose from. The people taking your order were fast. They have seen all the people in the world because they take your order and move you on, you are never waiting long for that hot crispy goodness.
One of the local delicacies that people online recommended trying in Banff was Beavertails, which is fried dough with toppings that is shaped in the form of a beaver's tail. The store itself is pretty small with a long line that goes outside, so it's a place where you definitely get it to go. They have some interesting flavors with ones with maple syrup, strawberry cheesecake, etc. but they also have savoury versions with poutine as well. We decided to get the mEHple beavertail with a chocolate drizzle on them, and I think it was a good choice! The pastry itself comes out freshly baked so it's really warm, and the maple flavor it had was delicious. It's a pretty large portion size so it's good to share with someone else, but I can definitely see why these are highly recommended. Highly recommend checking out if you're in Banff!
Don't even question if you should get it. GET IT! We don't have a such thing in my hometown. The base is so thin and crispy, that it makes it light to eat. I could eat more! I'm still dreaming. It can get pretty packed inside & staff are super friendly. They also have ice cream too, but the beaver tails are the show stoppers.
don't get us started on beavertails. Yea on the surface it's a piece of fried dough with some toppings on top, but it's truly more than that. You just have to try it to find out (but also maybe my partner and I just love sweets). We even tried the other beavertails location as a quality check :D The pistachio was my personal favorite, and I would get it again. They were super quick. It's a small place and there's limited seating outside. It's more of a grab and go type of situation. Overall, if this is your first time in Canada, I would recommend.
This place was so overcrowded every time we walked by, the lines were out the door. We ended up getting 3 ice creams all refreshing and delicious. 1) Strawberry sorbet - refreshing 2) Lemon lavender - refreshingly tart I loved this the most. 3) Chocolate - classic and not that sweet.
Look, let's be honest. It's not like this place is life changing but this is an iconic Canadian food so we had to try it. Pretty simple menu, with the beavertail and a variety of toppings, mostly of the ice cream variety. If you're not starved, one beavertail is sufficient. Although the beavertail itself is light and airy, with the ice cream, it's quite the heavy dessert. We tried the apple, caramel, and vanilla and liked the apple the best. Gave it an apple pie type vibe. Definitely recommend you try it once if you see one!
Great service! You pay first then go ahead and go down to get your beavertail. No ice cream was available this time but no problem, Cows was nearby. A little crowded at this one, so I recommend going to the other on the other street. For tourists like myself, Beavertails are like a super flat crunchy churro with whatever yummy stuff you want on top.
This spot caught our eye walking through Banff, we noticed a lot of their customers eating on the street and of course we had to try it. We got their avalanche and their pistachio. Both were great! The avalanche lives up to its name though because it it's messy! The pistachio was really good, and it was a delicious dessert option. I really liked the pastry base. Service was decent, they gave our pastry to another customer who cut in front of us while waiting. It's a bit chaotic inside since it's so busy but still a good experience.
Came here twice during our week visit to Banff and Jasper national Park and we are obsessed. Yes there's a line but it moves really fast and it is totally worth the sweet treats that await inside! Storefront is basic but very cute. We went to the one on the main street and again the next day. A local delight that should be experienced.
Delicious sweet treat to get while shopping around in the area! Warm, crispy yet doughy, and good variety of flavors. The cashier was very friendly and even told us which one she liked most, even when the line was stretching out the door. This particular store is SMALL. So be prepared to feel cramped and squished when waiting in line or waiting for your order.
I'm usually not a big fan of donuts, but I wanted to try since everyone raves about the beaver tails here. I also found the name to be interesting. This was very delicious. Tasted like a funnel cake but a different shape. When it was fresh, it was crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I got the maple and bacon flavor. I would definitely say it is on the sweeter end for those who do not have as much of a sweet tooth as I do. The bacon bits were good but can be a bit overwhelming as there were too many of them. Flavor was great, however, perfect sweet and savory flavor if you're into that. Quick and good service. This place was located in Banff town so no doubt you will have good views of the mountains.
When in Banff, you got to stop at BeaverTails for this sweet treat. It is like a flattened donuts smeared with your toppings of choice. I had the pistachio and honey. It is good, but very sweet and messy to eat. They hand it to you in a half opened bag. I had to ask for a box because it was too much to eat at once. It was empty when I went at night and took a couple of minutes to make.
Tourist review! Found it worth the hype if you have a sweet tooth! Be prepared for long lines during peak times and weekends since it's in the heart of Banff downtown. The one I tried was the popular choice 'bananarama'. I got it to-go to save on time and have it by the lake. I like any dessert that has bananas and chocolate so it was the perfect flavor combo for me. The base is made out of some kind of dough that is fried. I also tried the famous poutin for the very first time here and I was pleasantly surprised by the combo of gravy and cheese and fries. I must add that it will taste the best if had fresh as the fries can get soggy if kept for long so keep that in mind if opting for to-go. The restaurant had couple of tables outside on the sidewalk but the seating is fairly limited for the size of the crowd. read more

My first time having BeaverTails and I am sooo glad I finally got to try it! I had no idea what to expect - at first glance from the window, I thought it would be crunchy. But I was so happy when I bit into it and it was soft and fluffy, very very similar to a raised donut. It was basically a donut but much thinner. You'll be happy to know you can order half and half of two flavors if you're like me and can't decide on just one. I got half Coco Vanil and half Hazel Amour. Both were extremely delicious, but my favorite was the Coco Vanil. The crunch of the Oreo cookie topping resulted in the perfect texture combo. I will say that this flavor is EXTREMELY sweet, so make sure to prepare your tastebuds! I would definitely pass on the ice cream next time and choose to divert all my energy on a delicious BeaverTail. The flavor was okay, but the texture of the ice cream was not it. It was more icy rather than soft, stretchy, and creamy. My mom was actually a fan, but this is not personally how I prefer my ice cream. The Algonquin Canoe flavor was actually really tasty, but I couldn't enjoy it because of the texture. You can sample ice cream flavors before you decide. The BeaverTail was ready almost instantly and came out while we were still finishing up the payment! It was so warm and fresh too. read more

I rarely get to enjoy an authentic Beaver Tail. So when I see a shop, it's a must. Banff has 2 locations. I happened to be strolling by this location and the lineup was minimal. It seemed to be moving along quickly, so I queued up for my delicious treat. Service was friendly and prompt. But the limited space inside made it a little cramped. No big deal, I didn't wait too long. Probably about 5 mins. Worth it, if you ask me! My Beaver Tail was piping hot and absolutely PERFECT! It was devoured in minutes! I always go classic cinnmon sugar with lemon. Killaloo Sunrise I believe they're called. read more

This was surprisingly good! I thought it would be just okay since it's a big chain and people had described it to me as a big, flat donut. The only similarity is they're both fried dough, but a beavertail is much thinner, making it flaky and crispy. We ordered the mEHple and bananarama, both were quite sweet but I enjoyed them! They're big enough to share, but they're made like a handheld dessert so the best way to share them is to alternate taking bites or ripping it apart with your hands (I wouldn't recommend this because your hands get sticky). read more

Omg. I ordered the Mehple (play on the word maple) and it was so good. We got a scoop of ice cream on top. I think it was the salted caramel or whatever. But it went well together. Honestly it would have still been good even without the ice cream. I kind of wish I tried other flavors but time constraint just didn't allow it for me. Maybe next time I'm visiting! I definitely recommend dropping by to try this dessert. Save some room after dinner! Take a walk to make space if you have to! read more

Delicious thin donut-like consistency beaver tail shaped desserts. You can also elect to go savory with poutine toppings. The girl at the register overcharged us for what we ordered and was slow, but otherwise a fun Canadian dessert to try. Expect a wait, there's been a line every day we've walked by. read more

Wow this place has delicious dessert! You walk in and order and wait until they call your order when it's ready. Its like elephant ear in America without all that sugar coating and thinner. The dough is absolutely delicious. Pro tip, you can half and half on an order and add a scoop of gelato on top for $3 more. Its so good!! Wish they had this on west coast in America read more
Long line, small space, decent wait time. Inconsistent dough texture. We got the bananarama, apple pie and brownie. Bananarama and apple pie were soggy but the brownie dough was nice and crunchy. The tails also used to be a lot bigger when I first tried it 6 years ago. Inflation I guess. There's a less busier store down the street that I would have gone to had I known. read more
When my friends first told me they wanted to get "BeaverTails" I said eww because I thought they were actual Beaver tails, but to my surprise it was a dessert/pastry place. We described it as like a to go funnel cake. A deep fried pastry with toppings. I asked which flavors were the most popular and the workers said Bananarama (chocolate hazelnut and bananas) and Avalanche (cheesecake). We got those 2 and another person got the Mehple (maple syrup and crunch). They're definitely good fresh. We ordered the Hazel Amour (chocolate hazelnut aka Nutella) for our friend to-go. The mehple one got syrup EVERYWHERE, I felt like it ruined my experience because everything was so sticky. I really enjoyed the Avalanche (cheesecake one). I couldn't finish a full one myself and that might be because we got a scoop of the Cookie Monster ice cream while waiting. I definitely could have shared the Nutella one with a friend. The lines can get long but service is quick, it's a very small store front but one of those "must tries" in Banff for dessert. They have two shops very close by across from the street from each other, and they also serve ice cream year round. The ice cream stays frozen outside because of how cold it is. There's no where to eat inside but there is a bench outside. read more

Beaver tails are the offspring of crossing donuts and funnel cake, and what's there not to like about fried dough with toppings? lol. This Canadian sweet treat is a must when visiting. I came 2 nights in a row and was almost going to make it 3 but decided to go to the ice cream shop instead. Each piece is hand-stretched to resemble a beaver tail and made-to-order, so it comes out warm and fresh. The balance of doughiness and chew is on point, it's light and airy, the outside is crisp, and overall isn't too oily. * MEHPLE I must be missing something here because I'm not sure why they spell 'maple' that way, but this one is topped with maple spread and maple sugar crunch. No shortage of maple flavor here. It was a sticky mess to eat and I personally found it too sweet even with having a sweet tooth. Regardless I had no problem finishing it haha. * THE CLASSIC Simply topped with cinnamon & sugar, can't go wrong with that combination. I liked this one more than the mehple because it had just the right amount of sweetness. I could literally eat this every day. My only gripe is that they put the clean napkins inside the paper wrapper with the beaver tail so they get blotted with oil and I have to grab more. read more

When in Canada, you gotta try a BeaverTail! It is a flat fried dough in the shape of (guess what?) a beaver tail. The texture is crispy and reminds me of a funnel cake minus the greasiness and overabundance of sugar. There were a lot of enticing flavor combos to pick from but I chose something a little more traditional. A beaver tail rolled lightely in cinnamon sugar with a lemon wedge known as Killaloe Sunrise. Crispy, crunchy, sour, and a little sweet. Yummy! I can see how it would be easy to eat more than one because they are lighter than American desserts. Also, ordered one poutine just to give it a try. I'm sure they are not the best poutine on the planet but they were pretty darn good for my first taste of the popular Canadian dish. Hot fries smothered in a brown gravy with melty cheese curds. Honestly it hit the spot on a cold, snowy day. Employees were mostly attentive and the place is clean. There is no seating inside or outside so plan on taking your snacks to go! read more
Here are our FOUR star FAPS: Food (F): Warm and ready to eat! We don't have this snack in the US, so it was great to experience something new! Despite the "heavy" and "filling" look, the beaver tail was a light funner cake. We decided to get the bananarama which was like Nutella with bananas. Definitely something to try! Ambience (A): Typical ice cream/ snack shop that specializes in Beaver tails! Parking (P): We parked at the FREE parking lot that was only a three to five minute walk to downtown Banff. Service (S): Quick and friendly! No complaints! Overall, we would recommend it since it was our first time in Canada and something different than what they have in the US! read more
There are 2 stores in Banff. Both can be very busy after meals. I decided to brave the crowds to try some BeaverTails after an early dinner. I ordered an apple pie BeaverTail and got 25% ($1 off) a cinnamon sugar BeaverTail by presenting my key card since I was staying at one of the Banff Lodging Company family of hotels. They were hot and a bit messy to eat. It's like eating thin fried dough with whatever topping you choose. Good to try since it was probably one of the only Canadian food items I tried during my visit in Banff. read more
We saw the huge line outside of this place and decided to try it out thinking it was something special in the area. We got the BeaverTails and added the maple walnut ice cream scoop. Highly recommend the ice cream! I thought it would be too sweet but it was delicious! The food itself is okay. It's nothing different than what you would get at a fair but it was good. This was the best thing and I would have eaten one every day if my body could have handled it. It basically is a fried dough paddle (kind of tasting like a funnel cake) in the shape of a beaver tail, covered with dessert toppings. We tried the hazelnut spread one and the classic. And both agreed that the classic was the way to go. Also, just eat this inside standing up so you can get it hot and fresh (that will be the best). These little (well not (so) little) fast food takeout desserts are quite tasty! I saw people on the streets eating them and my eye was drawn to them. I'm a "sweets" gal. We tried one (s'mores) and went back at least three times before we left Banff. All-in-all, we had the bananarama, strawberry cheesecake, pecan pie and apple pie. Each one was as delicious as the next. A savory option was on the menu but we never ventured down that road. The locations are small, very popular and without seating. One of the ones we stopped in did have two cafe tables and chairs out front, but mostly you're on your own to walk and attempt to eat these yummy concoctions. I recommend finding a bench or lean up against a wall at the minimum to savor every bite. Cash or credit cards accepted. No restrooms. read more
A couple of friends who had visited before told me I had to stop by for the banana nutella beaver tail! So that's exactly what I did! There are two not too far from each other, I passed by both and there were lines at both. My brother and I waited maybe 10 minutes before we ordered and then received our order within 5 minutes. It was definitely super sweet, so I ended up sharing with my parents. The donut was a tad too crispy for me and near the end the nutella started dripping on my hands a bit, so grab napkins! Wish I could go back to try the avalanche, brwownie, and the lemon mmmeringue. Currently salivating while I'm writing this review. read more
They said you must try BeaverTail pastry when in Banff so we did. We ordered the classic, it was a fried dough wifi cinnamon sugar. It is supposed to be good, I mean fried dough and cinnamon, how could it go wrong?! Oh well, to my disappointment, it was nothing special and extremely fatty. Id say though when in Banff, you should Still try it. read more

Was walking around and saw a long line waiting for this so I decided to try. There is a long line must be good. The line goes quickly so it wasn't a long wait. However the place was small and packed so it a bit confusing to figure out who already ordered and who have not. Anyway, I got a brownie beaver tail with a scoop walnut ice cream. The ice cream was good and the beaver tail was ok. It's tastes better when it warm, once it's cold it kinda hard. And it's also a bit too sweet for me. Overall, it doesn't taste bad however I wouldn't get in line and wait for it. read more

Gahhh this was so good! Totally worth it! I absolutely inhaled this thing and didn't feel bad about it. It's surprisingly light and made with wheat flour. I got half classic (cinnamon sugar) and half maple. Both were good but the maple just took it up a notch. Hoping to get another one in before my vacation is over. I'm going maple all the way for the next one! read more
If you've never had a beaver tail, did you even go to Canada? Over 200+ locations throughout the country, beavertails are iconic. I like just the original and hazel amour. Imagine cinnamon sugar or Nutella on a warm fried donut like dough. Perfect for any weather and even more perfect dessert to end the night. You can top it with ice cream, but I'm a basic B and love it as is. read more
