A huge YUM to the Red Velvet Cupcake! Woohoo! The frosting was sweet and buttery and the cake moist and not too sweet, just the way I like it! They even sprinkle a few shavings of chocolate on top. If anyone is a RV fan, try it here! They have mini ones for $1.50 and a larger regular sized one for $2.50! Let me start by saying Becker's has amazing sandwiches. Unfortunately, their customer service causes me to give them only two stars. This does not apply to the woman who makes the sandwiches as she is awesome but she doesn't answer the phone or work the front counter and this is where they are seriously lacking. I finally wrote a review due to what happened today (12/24/14). I realized today is Xmas Eve so called to see what time they closed and check to see what was left. I realize how popular they are, especially on a holiday, so wanted to see what was left before making the drive from Hermosa Beach. I called and was told they were open until 4pm (I called at 3pm). I was not told they were no longer making sandwiches and barely had any baked goods left. Only reason I was going was for a sandwich. Would have been nice to been told they closed the deli. Especially considering half of not more people go for the sandwiches. I get there and there are 4 people working up front yet it takes 5 min. to acknowledge me. I get it sucks working around a holiday but I don't make your hours and if not for customers like me guess what? No job for you! I finally am asked if I need help and before I can answer I am told the deli closed and all they have left is what is in the display which is like 2 trays of sugar cookies. Considering I just called about 10 min. ago I am confident in my belief that this could not have occurred in that amount of time. I asked why they couldn't have told me this when I called 10 min. ago so I didn't make the drive. No apology or anything. Just a smirk and a laugh when I walked out. The girl that was helping me had dark hair, dark skin, and dark eyes. I recognize her from previous visits and will remember her. I didn't catch her name but I will be sure if I go again to ask for it to let the owners know they hired a smartass who instead of saying sorry for the inconvenience instead felt it better to smirk and laugh. It's not exactly fun driving in holiday traffic and finding parking in downtown MB. I have another choice word for her that I am sure I can't write. I will also be sure if ask for someone else to help me if she is there. If this was my only experience with her rudeness I would it alone but she has been rude in the past. If the owners read this could you kindly tell your staff to learn some customer service. Tell people before they drive down what is closed or out (especially when we ask), and if they do make a mistake or a customer is upset say sorry and what can we do to help instead of smirking. I don't see me returning to Becker's again. And I am not some random person who goes once a year. I am a local who frequented the place. But obviously they don't care or want business evidenced by the people they hire. So may I recommend Mickey's or Big Mike's in Hermosa if you want a good sandwich with friendly customer service. And if it is sweets you want....try the MB Creamery of course, The Cake Shop, or even Whole Foods! I called Becker's this morning around 11:30 and requested a delivery to help brighten up my boyfriend's day at work. I live out of town so I couldn't pick them up. Not only did they help me pick out a variety of treats to send, they had them delivered within the hour! I respect these guys because they don't do fondant. As far as I am concerned, fondant is the work of the devil, nothing that goes on a cake should be that chalky! All the pretty cakes at Becker's are decorated with buttercream only. If you like buttercream, you'll like Becker's. Fantastic treats, uneven service. Becker's is one of those old-fashioned bakeries that you would expect to find in a small town. I'm grateful that there's a local bakery where I can purchase homemade, quality treats made with real ingredients. I would much rather purchase cookies and cupcakes from a family-owned shop, than buy those crisco laden things at the supermarket. I have never ordered a cake, but I have tried all the goodies in their bakery case. They are wonderful! My favorites are the brownies (crisp on the outside, moist on the inside) and the iced oatmeal cookies. The iced sugar cookies and cupcakes are also superb. I've had the cronuts (croissant-donut hybrid) a few times and they are a little oily. Really, I have no complaints about the food. My only problem is the service. Sometimes the girls working there are very kind and friendly. Other times, I get attitude. I don't know if they are truly busy back there, but they certainly act like they are! One time, I walked in five minutes before closing and a girl said that they were closed. I pointed to THEIR clock and mentioned that I still had five minutes. I just wanted to grab a couple cookies, not order a cake. However, she maintained her position that they were closed (in a flat, unapologetic tone, I might add). Who's idea was it to put a bakery - one block up from the sand? BECKERS! Genius, I tell you! So, after about two hours of beach volleyball (the kind where the sand is BURNING your feet and you're constantly trying to dig yourself deeper where the sand is cooler) - I was ready for some grub. We walk up the stairs and get onto the main street. There it was, glowing in the sun! I walked in and literally made a B line to the cookies. Man, these cookies were HUGE! Literally the size of my hand when I stretch it out as far as I can! So I ordered two chocolate chip, one peanut butter, and one red velvet cupcake. ( I mean, we were on our way to have lunch, after all!) The cookies were soooo soft and buttery. They were a little thin, but the size more than made up for it! So fresh! The cupcake; however, was their downfall. I went in for a bite of the top (that's my fave part of the cupcake - the part that mushrooms out!) - and it fricken fell off! WHAT???? The whole mushroom top slid off the rest of the cupcake! I was mortified!!! To top it off, the cupcake was dry!!! Who wants a dry red velvet? I mean, it's supposed of like VELVET!!!!! Too bad I didn't save part of the cookie for last. Damn. I really need to learn to save some for later! Ugh. So yes, I'm a little heffer. Sandwiches are very impressive! Some of their cookies are decorated so cute. I ordered a cake which ended up very expensive. I needed a specific design. It wasn't what I expected for the price and from a professional bakery. Cake itself was not anything special. Everyone there was very nice. I know they are very busy as well but they should welcome all their guests as they come through the door. This place sucks! I ordered the cake for my Baby Shower here, a month before the date, I wanted a 3 tier, topsy-turvy (mad-hatter) style cake, with different designs on each tier. I spent over an hour going over each tier with the girl behind the counter. I should've asked for somebody with a little more experience to help me. I got a phone call THE DAY of my Baby Shower to tell me that the cake decorator couldn't fulfill my request for the designs I had spent an hour explaining! The girl on the phone asked me if the decorator could "wing" it! Are you kidding me? At this point, what choice did I have. My Mom arrived with the cake to the Baby Shower, oh yeah, they don't deliver. The cake was not what I wanted AT ALL! It was 3 tiers, that's about it. It wasn't topsy turvy, they had thrown some sprinkles on the bottom tier which I specifically requested against. I wouldn't recommend this mediocre bakery to anyone. read more

It would have been a 5 just because their cookies are amazing, but the service they provide is the worst. We placed an order online and followed directions perfect. Was charged for order and went in on Christmas Eve to pick order and Hackett forgot to give us entire order. When we got home we had to email as they would not answer the phone. All they did was credit us our money back but the cookies where for under privileged children for the holidays and the Becker's did not offer to send them to us by courier and instead said it was a human mistake. Well, if you go and order cookies from them please make sure your order is complete as they make human mistakes-Unacceptable and never recommending or supporting them again. I had ordered a cake from a baker I know in Las Vegas for a wedding in Manhattan Beach. I picked up the cake on Thursday night for the Saturday beach wedding. The cake was horrible and it was almost as if I had made it. This baker has always made great cakes for other occasions. She wasn't able to fix since she was going out of town. I had to find a new cake on Friday for the wedding on Saturday. I found Beckers Bakery online and looking at all the pictures I knew that they were the ones that could help. While other bakeries wanted at least 2-3 months in advance notice, Beckers Bakery was able to take my order on Friday morning and have the cake ready and looking perfect on Saturday afternoon. Thanks to them everything was great for the wedding. everyone loved the cake. I only gave them a four star because the top tier which was red velvet was not as red velvety as I would have liked, other than that it was great. I would recommend them to everyone. This is the go to place for cookies. For birthdays or special events, someone is sure to pick up a box. The surfboard cookies are my favorite, but people tend to buy the sprinkle cookies as well. Also, you can customize goods. Once, a group ordered cookies with our friend's face on them. Service is good as there seems to always be enough workers to help me with my selections. The $2 kronuts here are pretty solid. Texture-wise they lean more towards the chewy donut side than the light crispy/flaky croissant texture from DK's ($5) for example. They're definitely still good but I just thought I'd point out the difference. Just a few weeks Becker's was selling their kronuts for $1.50, but at $2 you can still go nuts and get fat on a this tasty treat. I called while sitting in traffic and the employee brought them out to my car (I had paid when I put the order in weeks prior). I am so sad Becker's got rid of their lunch combo deal! You used to be able to get a (huge) sandwich, chips, a drink and a cookie for $10. It was enough food to feed both my husband and I for lunch. The sandwich and all the baked goods are delicious, but honestly the unbeatable lunch deal was what kept me coming back just about every weekend for lunch. Becker's is my go-to place for fresh, simple sandwiches and a sweet fix. They serve large sandwiches with tons of options and you can personalize as you wish. I usually get the roast beef option and am never disappointed. Each sandwich comes with a small sugar cookie but it's really the bakery spread next to the sandwich counter that is why I keep coming back. Cookies shaped like surfboards, baby carriages, rattles, cartoon characters, hearts, four-leaf clovers, anything you can think of. My favorite are actually the simple round sugar cookies with sprinkles - there are 3-5 options for icing and sprinkles usually. They also have the most amazing mini cupcakes; red velvet with buttercream icing, banana cake, carrot cake, chocolate and vanilla! Becker's is the perfect pre or post beach treat - you won't be disappointed! PS: Parking can be a bit tricky during prime beach times (ex: Saturday midday). read more

A coworker of mine brought me to this cute little bake shop in DT Manhattan Beach and I was impressed! The people in there were super nice and helpful and the baked goods were all YUMMY. I absolutely LOVE their Red Velvet cupcakes. It's so moist and not too sweet. I have had my share of cake, and their cakes are worth it every time. The price is a little steep but the quality of the cakes is to die for. I love their new bacon maple cupcakes. I am always a fan of the salty and sweet combination, so this tasty treat is worth the bite. I also love how they design their cakes. They try to make the frosting design 3-D so your kids cakes doesn't look like it came from Vons. The red velvet isn't as good as Nickel Diner's, but better than most. Great little bakery with really good cookies that are usually totally sold out by the end of the day. It is great for kids because they have these amazingly elaborate animal cookies. Becker's smells so wonderful when you walk in. I have yet to try a cupcake, but that is next on my list. It is a good bakery, but they are also a deli. I got a roast beef sandwich on fresh baked real bread (not that Subway crap) and it came with a cookie (yum!). It was huge and cost $6.50. I can't believe no one has written this place up yet? It's hardly a secret but on the off chance you haven't heard of this place...try it sometime when you're in the area. It's counter service...certainly not a restaurant, but these are the best sandwiches I've found in the area! (And they're only open during the day...I believe...) SANDWICHES: I prefer the squaw bread...and pretty much everyone else I know gets their sandwiches on squaw too! :) I get the turkey and avocado (w/o mustard...just my pref) with onions, lettuce and tomato. You can also get italian dressing on this...but be warned, if you get dressing AND avocado, it might get a bit soggy if you don't eat it on the sooner side! Also, their sammies used to come in "small" and "large" and the difference is the amount of meat they put on there...so if you're ordering a small and large of the same thing, the "large" one will be the slightly "bulkier" one! You can call in a order (I've ordered multiple sammies before) and then swing by and pick 'em up and get back to the beach! Also, they give you a little sugar cookie with every sammie...always a nice touch! They also do sandwich party trays..done that a couple times for events and they've always been devoured!! CAKES: These are some of the BEST cakes I've ever had. It's not the cheapest place but they're moist and clearly home made...not coming out of a factory. Who knew you could do so much with icing...dinosaurs, flowers, just really fun, colorful and tasty cakes!! Order one next time you have an occasion and everyone will be asking you where it's from! Came here to pick up a cake for a family event, it was okay, nothing to rave about. There was a lot of workers behind the counter which was an indication that this place is popular and the service was quick and systematic but the girls were kinda "snotty". As I was not familiar with the bakery, I asked for a maple donut and I was told in a not so nice tone, "we don't have donuts, we have cronuts"... hmmm interesting. Needless to say, I had to try this cronut, having read something about it. It was decadent! I got two of them, shared one with my husband and couldn't finish eating it as it was so rich and crumbly and messy. Decent bakery. My bf and I were just talking a walk along the beach and decided we still had some time so were walking around in the shopping area too and came upon this store. Wanted to get a little treat, so we got the mini red velvet cupcake and a chocolate cake pop, which came out to $3.50. The cream cheese frosting for the cupcake was very good, but the cupcake itself was a little disappointing. A red velvet cupcake is supposed to be, in essence, a chocolate cake with red food coloring. It was red alright, but there was nothing chocolatey about it, not even a hint of cocoa. Disappointing. It was moist and very sweet though. The cake pop though, was delicious! Very moist and dense, almost brownie like. Not too sweet though, but with a nice, dense chocolate flavor. I liked this a lot. I'd get the cake pops again if I'm in the area, but would probably pass on the cupcakes. The staff were nice and efficient, and there was a good amount of people buying and eating the treats out on the small tables on the sidewalk. We stopped here for a quick snack while walking around town -- we split a turkey and provolone sandwich (with italian dressing instead of the mayo and mustard). Everything was fresh and the portion of meat was better than I expected. We also got a chocolate chip cookie because, well, who could resist all the desserts in this place?!? I picked up a box of cupcakes for a birthday that included: banana, carrot, red velvet and bacon! They also had UCLA and USC cookies --- both of my Alma Maters! I have to say, I feel conflicted. 0-1 stars: Red Velvet cupcake (RVC) 3-4 stars: Oatmeal Raisin cookie I love RVCs but this one disappointed. Throat-stranglingly sweet with just the taste of sugar and maybe a hint of chocolate. Nothing else to it. However, the oatmeal raisin cookie was disturbingly tasty and addictive! We ordered a cake and several cookies here to celebrate our company's 10 year birthday. The customer service was very helpful, patient with all the changes I requested, and easy to work with. The order was ready at 7:30 AM as requested, and the cake and cookies looked amazing. We wowed the LA office and the admin HQ staff in VA. We had our logo printed onto the cake, and Becker's matched our company colors exactly (burgundy red) for the icing. We also had cookies printed with our company logo and our fearless leader's face. Everyone got a kick out of those. We got the red velvet cake with cream cheese frosting. Cake was not dense and overly sweet. The frosting added sweetness, just slightly too much for me, but others loved it. The cookies were like shortbread cookies with frosting. Very good, but I would have preferred some more moisture. Again, others loved it as well. 1 star deduction due to the sweetness of the frosting (but still a lot better than other bakeries in this area) and the dryness of cookie (again, just being picky. Cookies were still very good). Two big thumbs up. Will do again, mostly because of the great service and wonderful looking results. read more
