A five star rating from me is rare! I must have driven by this restaurant numerous times thinking it was just an older dive in Frederick MD. Boy, was I ever wrong! Looking at the actual building might scare you off but believe me if you can get yourself past a relatively rough exterior you won't be disappointed. For dinner my gentleman got the crab cake sandwich and the onion rings, he said that the sandwich was tasty and that their onion rings were probably some of the best he had ever had. Even I tried the onion rings and, they got a thumbs up from me. I got their Swiss and Mushroom burger and was EXCELLENT! We shared a chocolate malted which was superb! So good!!!! Cream of crab soup (seasonal) - so flavorful even though it looks so simple. The crab tastes so fresh! Frenny mammoth burger - super yum! It was all gooey with cheese and had the perfect amount of toppings. (Mammoth means 6oz vs 4oz). No public bathrooms & only outside seating. This place really oughta name themselves Crab N Buns cause they had the best damn crab cakes I've ever had. Guess you could say it was a taste of Paradise though. A buddy and I stopped by here on our way to camping at Greenbrier state park. In search of some local grub, I found this place highly reviewed and figured it was worth checking out. Ordering was quick with a little bit of wait since the place was busy on a Friday night. They took their precautions seriously and were limiting guests inside ordering room. There were several picnic tables outside to enjoy the takeout. As you might've guessed, we both opted for the crab cakes, a must every time you cross into Maryland. The cakes were oh, so perfectly fried and meaty. Along with some delicious onion rings, it made for a sinful, but worthy meal. We pulled in, saw a line of people standing outside (socially distant) so we stayed in the car and called in our order. 30mins later we drove through the drive thru pickup and grabbed some fab burgers, sweet potato fries and some kids meals (chicken fingers that looked and tasted awesome and a large grilled cheese sandwich). I am only giving this two stars because the onion rings were quite good and taste like they are truly homemade. Otherwise, less than one star would be warranted here. The food was greasy as heck and just plain ghastly and the service was incredibly surly. At the front counter, the person I ordered from kept pretending like she couldn't hear me because I was wearing a mask and clearly that didn't sit well with her in these quasi post-Covid times. Also, literally, if you ask for a cup of water from the person who brings you your food to the outside door, you are told that you have to go back inside to the front counter and order it because once they have given you your food to eat outside, they apparently refuse to have anything else to do with you. And the grilled cheese sandwich, what a joke. The bread was really thick, and it seemed at first to be well-grilled, but when I opened it up, if they possibly had put one slice of cheese at all in there, it had mostly dissolved or oozed out when they griddled it because the majority of the sandwich was just bread with a couple of smears of orange grease. There literally was no cheese in the grilled cheese sandwich, but maybe if they actually started with more than one slice there might have been some left once they finished grilling it! I advise everyone to stay away from this place, unless you are really desperate while you are passing through Frederick Maryland, and nothing else is open. read more

It's hard because this place is apparently a "Frederick Institution" but really it's only so-so. Their ice cream/milkshakes, are good, their onions rings are top notch, their fries are OK----the fries definitely taste frozen, but they make them fresh, so they are really good right out of the fryer, but then sub par after 5 minutes or so. All in all, still much better than McDonalds or something. However, they have two major things going against them: prices and staff. Food is expensive, like 2 sandwiches, a large fry and two shakes is going to set you back almost $40, which is waaayyyyy too much for slightly-better-then-average fast food! Even if you are only going for a shake or ice cream, expect $6+. And staff, geez. I think the older lady might be the owner, but the entire staff has this attitude like they are doing *you* a favor by letting you buy their food! It's grating. And their work ethic is bizarre. They close 45 minutes or so before they actually close, and so they will turn multiple people away while they are still open. It's weird and makes me never want to eat there just so I don't have to deal with the staff. This place would benefit from a drive thru, smaller/cheaper options, and retraining their staff in customer service skills. A much better option if you're willing to drive is Crying Johnnies in Mt. Airy! The food is amazing (and cheaper!) and the ice cream is better. PS. A tiny thing, I know, but their patio always has ants and bugs swarming the tables. I hadn't been here before but was really craving a good, tasty burger and that's exactly what I got. The burgers we ordered were cooked properly and very juicy (and a bit greasy in the best of ways). We got two orders of fries for three of us and it that was overkill; we would've had more than enough with one large order. It's the type of burger that you just want to eat without putting down. It definitely hit the spot. We called ahead for our order and were told it'd be a 30 minute wait. That part is a bummer since we called in our order when we were hungry and were only a few miles away so we just drove in circles until time was up. We pulled up to the pickup window and waited probably less than 10 for our order to actually be given to us. The people taking the order by phone and handing it to us were polite enough but seemed rushed--there was a line at the order window. All in all, good food, good price for what you get, and a great option if you plan ahead. read more

Great local spot!! I was passing thru Frederick Md for work and decided to give this place a try. My burger was good. This was the 1st time having Ham and Crab on a burger. It was delicious. This place is awesome! Super low key atmosphere and great food. Had the cape May burger (burger with ham cheese and a crab cake) and onion rings. Both were delicious but the onion rings are probably the best I've had in a while and came with a delicious dipping sauce. The burger choices are 4 and 8 oz and the 8oz burger was big enough to split. They rotate soft serve flavors and always have a lot to choose from. Yelp, you done good. Real good. A great find! First, yes, it is outside seating only & is easy to miss because it looks like a house. It is oozing Caribbean mellow charm. This place feels like it was scooped off of a cruise port and plopped down in Md. That isn't to say they are mellow to the point of slow service, not at all. Ice-cream and shakes are ready in minutes and even made to order burgers with onion rings came out in less than 10 min. Third, the food. Lord love you THE FOOD. Husband got the Cape Maye burger based on reviewer recomendations. (Good looks, reviewers!). Crab cake, ham, and tartar sauce (in addition to the "usual" fixings). I got the Cajun Blue, hot sauce, ham, french fries & blue cheese (plus the usual fixings). Both were sooo good. I got the smaller 4oz patty....and was still stuffed. Lol. The platter servings are really filling! The onion rings were delicious. Not too sweet like some other reviews said. We don't like sweet rings. These were perfect. The mac salad was super onion & eggy in taste. No heavy mayo flavor. Perfectly cool & light for a hot day. We also got a chili dog to split but were too full. We tried a bite though....ungh....groan worthy good. Possibly better than the burger. The sweet tea was very good and tasted fresh. The jumbo lump meat crabcake is worth 5 stars, easy. Kudos to Beef n Buns for offering it fried or grilled. I got mine grilled with lettuce and tomato and it was absolutely delicious. Plenty of crabmeat seasoned with a hint of good old Old Bay. I've been by for shakes and cookies and cream and banana are my two faves. Good to the last drop! read more

We used to pick up dinner from Beef 'n Buns at least once a week; that was back when I was 20 lbs heavier, working long hours at a crappy job that I hated and it was still called Cheeseburger in Paradise (You're an asshole, Jimmy Buffet). We've made a lot of lifestyle changes since then, but Beef 'n Buns is still my "go to" place when I get a junk food craving. Since it's been under new management for the past several years, I think it just keeps getting better and better. They have a huge menu; I would love to try their soups and platters, but I always end up going there when I need a burger and fry fix. Their burgers are great...with any combination of toppings that you can think of on a big squishy roll. Their fries are really good; nothing special like breading or double cooked but they're always made fresh to order so they're hot and crispy; like McDonald's fries on steroids. Their onion rings are fabulous and satisfy my fried food cravings perfectly. I get their BLT for lunch every once in a while; it's also very good. I also love their ice cream. Brusters is my first choice for "real" ice cream, but Beef N Buns is my favorite place for soft serve. They have fabulous shakes (especially their chocolate malt) and their hot fudge sundaes are fantastic with always enough fudge to last to the end. I've been getting updates on Facebook reminding me that they have black raspberry ice cream and I vow to make it back there before the end of summer. read more

My kids love the ice cream here and the people are pretty nice but overall this place is way overrated & overpriced. I would only go here for dessert. We stopped by here on our way home from whitewater kayaking to grab some icecream. It's a cute local burger & icecream shop with a quirky choice of music playing. I ordered the vanilla softserve cone with coffee and cream flavor blast. IT WAS AMAZING. Exactly what I needed to wind down after an adventurous day. They also have milkshakes, sundaes, and a ton of different flavors, as well as real food--burgers etc. Everything is pretty cheap too!
