Beer Wall was a fun one. You loaded up a card with money, were handed a glass, then could swipe your card at one of the numerous taps that lined the walls throughout the bar. Somehow this place survived the pandemic and managed to stand out on a stretch of Penn Avenue with no shortage of bars and restaurants. One of the main attractions was the game room upstairs, home to foosball and arcade classics like TMNT: Turtles in Time, the timeless classic Simpsons beat 'em up, and NBA Jam ("Is it the shoes?"). There were also extra restrooms up there, so it was a nice escape if in case you wanted to get away from the packed downstairs. Food here was good, not great. It was probably the weakest area. People mostly came for the spectacle of the walls of beer rather than a hot meal. That's not to say they didn't lack ambition when it came to putting together a menu. There was even a stretch where they had an AYCE snow crab leg night. Sadly, the kitchen was completely overwhelmed and in the roughly 2.5 hours we were there, only three rounds of crab legs managed to come out of the kitchen. I commend them for trying, but they simply were not equipped to pull off something like that. Beer Wall is a place I will miss simply for its uniqueness. The "self-serve, walls lined with taps" concept has taken off in other locations under different names. While it was here, it was definitely a neat experience. read more

I've been in Reading for one month and heard a lot about this place, so decided to give it a try. Beer Wall definitely offers a unique experience with their self serve beer concept and arcade games. Pros- Very conscientious of social distancing and staff wore masks. The arcade games were definitely enjoyable while we waited for our food. More so, I was pleased with the TV screens playing the NBA playoffs as my friends and I are avid NBA fans. I was a little upset about the lack of vegetarian options on the menu, but however the food still tasted great and the prices were fair. Cons- The beer selection was not what I had expected. I thought there would be a more unique selection. Most of the beers were beers you could find at any bar. Although the service is friendly, it was also slow as we waited about 45 minutes for food. Overall, if you're in the Reading area and looking for a unique dining experience with friends, then Beer Wall is the place to go. read more

Stopped by based on the yelp reviews and menu. When I opened the door 4 guys were jamming up the entrance and I could barely get in. Two were at the bar and the other two were at the chair. This should have been my first indication that this was not going to be a good place. The waitress, nor the bartender asked the people to move as I politely asked them to excuse me to get by them. When I got in, I looked at the beer wall and thought this was going to be a good place, but the web menu and other menus that are posted in Yelp showed the sous vide fillets as well as the codfish fish and chips. Neither of these items were available, nor were many other items that were shown on the Yelp app. I drove all the way out here based on what the web app showed for their main dishes, but the most items that they have are handheld burgers and specialty tacos. This was not what I was expecting, nor was I going to wait for additional options that could not be served. I will not come back. read more

Very nice place to sample beer, hang out with friends and play video games. On two floors with taps on each floor. Larger set of taps on the first floor. About 25 different beers and hard cider on first floor and 10 different taps on second floor. The food is hit or miss. Everyone enjoyed the steak on a stick appetizer, they we're delicious. At $12.95 a bit pricey. The duck fat fried potatoes were tasty with a sprinkle of chives and shaved cheese. The pretzel bites were a bit doughy. My Stout Beef Stew was very tasty, the chunks of beef very tender but were overwhelmed by potatoes which were a bit undercooked. The service was very friendly but slow. My girlfriend couldn't get enough of this place and I just don't understand why. For the sake of love, I've come here with her 3 times wanting to give this place a chance and have disliked it each time. This place is a perfect example of pretentiousness, those memes you see about expensive burger joints? It's this place in an absolute nutshell. What's so wrong with serving something as simple as a cheeseburger? It's a classic and doesn't need to be reinvented. And how many things can you drench in chipotle aioli? Which is gross by the way, and I'm not even gonna pretend I know what the heck duonaise is. It seems they only schedule one waitress a shift too to take care of the whole floor. What's up with that? I worked at a movie theater way back when Avengers: Endgame came out so I completely understand their visible burnout. This is the place for you if you're into pretentious and overpriced food, jaded waitresses, and unnecessarily loud music. Bring a coat too as this place is freezing no matter what season we're in, I'd hate to hear someone caught hypothermia while eating their duck fat fries. As a craft beer enthusiast I was excited at what I heard about the Beer Wall. After visiting it's not somewhere I will return. The positives were the staff, they were great, friendly and very knowledgeable about the different beers. I wasn't a fan of the tight spaces and felt the price per ounce was a little too much. I visit a lot of breweries and can't remember a time I payed $10.00 plus for any draft. As far as the tight spaces, it was difficult to move around in the areas of the drafts especially making your way to the upstairs steps. This was our first time at a 'beer wall' and we loved the concept. The place was huge with tables all over. We are also from NY and loved that it cost literally roughly 30cents an ounce! Upstairs they have free games- like pacman, ninja turtles, foosball, etc. There are also more drafts upstairs! So convenient that we didn't have to go up and down the stairs the whole time. They also have an outside area, but it was too hot for us during the summer. All the workers were super helpful and suggested great bears. Much prefer the ambiance of the Lancaster location. On this particular night there was a DJ and the place was packed with a mishmosh of people, to which I felt way to old to be hanging out here. There was a private party happening upstairs, but you were still allowed to pour from those taps. Slightly awkward as you have to cut right through the party to access the taps. The Beer Wall is an amazing concept. You pay by the ounce and can try all kinds of beer. I am not a beer drinker but have become fond our fruit beers. There's always at least 1 cider and seltzer too. The food is delicious. My favorite item is the tempura cauliflower. It is perfection. They serve it with 3 sauces: garlic soy, Thai peanut and Buffalo. The garlic soy is magical. I ask for only that sauce. They have 2 sizes, personal and shareable. They are hefty portions. The small is enough for 3 people. I ordered the large the first time and had plenty of leftovers that I popped in my air fryer at home. They also had mango mussels on their menu. They were delicious. They rotate the menu about every 4 months, can't wait for them to come back. Their cocktails are great too! I was only in this area because wanted to visit the brewery across the street. Unfortunately due to Covid they were not open, but luck lead me here instead. This is such a wonderful concept for a bar! You get a beer card, linked to your tab, and can use it to pour yourself a beer whenever you're ready. No waiting and no huge queues at the bar! They have a ton of interesting craft beer on tap and to are free to pour yourself as much or as little as you like. Upstairs they've got free arcade games too. I was super excited to come here after my daughters cheer competition over at Santander Arena. We love exploring local places when she competes and this place sounded like it was right up my alley. But unfortunately the visit fell flat. Pros - Service was great. She was friendly, quick, and didn't seem to mind there were 3 kids. Free arcade games were fun. Food portions are large and the prices on the food are fantastic. Love the self-serve beer model. Parking! Cons - Beer selection was dismal, nothing you can't find at most bars and thought they would have a more eclectic selection. While the portions were great, most of the food on the menu wasn't available. With an already limited menu it made selecting food a challenge. Also their cocktail menu wasn't fully available either. Running out of sparkling wine during brunch is a big no-no. I would certainly pop in again and give it a try. We enjoy a day trip to Reading when the weather is nice and walking around downtown, but I was disappointed in the consistency, availability, and selection. read more

I have been hearing great reviews since this place came to West Reading. My husband and I came here for lunch yesterday to check it out. Parking wasn't too bad around 12. Upon entering, we chose a hi top near the bar. The two guys who were working were AWESOME! Super nice, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. If you have questions on beer, they had all the answers. The one guy explained in thorough detail on how to use the beer wall system. My husband and I each grabbed a beer, which poured perfectly. We ordered the buffalo cauliflower bites and hot chicken to start with. The portions were perfect since we were sharing. The cauliflower bites had just enough sauce on them, crispy, and flavorful. The hot chicken was AMAZING! I accidentally knocked my plate off the table, and the server was nice enough to get me another portion for myself. My husband and I then split the mini lobster rolls with duck fat fries. WOW! Sooo flavorful and delicious! The fries were thin cut and some of the best fries I've had in awhile. A new addition to the other breweries and eateries on Penn Ave in West Reading area, with a fun atmosphere and a unique twist on how beers are served: self serve with any pour amount you want. Provide your credit card and youre given credit-card sized cards that you use to place over any of the various beer taps lining the walls both upstairs and downstairs. take a glass from below the taps, and the small, adjacent screen shows cost per ounce of that particular beer, as well as the total cost of the pour. Not sure if you'll like the beer? take a small pour and sample them all! find your perfect draft? pour a full mug to enjoy! need a fresh glass?-take a new one from below the taps, or use rinser built into the drip tray. Upstairs has even more beer taps, along with classic arcade games and foosball, all free to play, at least at the time we were there. Shuffleboard downstairs. Lots of different beers to choose from, including big name macro brews (Coors, Bud, Yuengling Miller, etc), plenty of IPAs, sours and fruit beers. of the 35+ taps, they only had 1 stout, but we may have just hit a low spot in the rotation, as there were 1-2 more stouts "on deck". Check their website for full list of beers at any given time. Unfortunately, we had eaten before arriving, but the food looks amazing, with a variety of apps and entrees, sandwiches and burgers, which we'll be sure to try next time. I am SO happy that this place opened. It's fun, hip, and really cute. There's no place in Reading like this, so it's a great new addition to the area. There's a great selection of beer on tap at affordable prices. It's such a fun experience putting your card in and pouring your own beer (kind of makes you feel like your own little bartender lol). There are multiple floors and the upstairs area has different games to keep you entertained. There are great food options to go along with the beer. I got the hot chicken tenders with honey drizzled, on a bed of toast. It was so good! I'll definitely be coming back! read more

The nice thing about this spot is that you can take your barcode card (which is linked to your card) and pour the exact amount of beer you want directly from the tap. My husband and I visited Beer Wall with some PA family and friends around Christmas 2022. I found a beer I can love! Goose Island Bourbon County Cafe de Olla stout has my 2 favorite flavors: coffee and chocolate, and I was putting this stuff away like no tomorrow. Good thing I was eating, too: the alcohol content was higher than most wines we enjoy! The beers on tap have descriptions of their character so you're not buying in the blind. Buy a card and try several. Go with friends, play some shuffleboard, enjoy great conversation, have some fries with duck gravy, and (if you can find it) try the Cafe de Olla! So my husband and I came for a date night since we were able to get out for the first time in how long. We used to love coming here but haven't been since last winter. We always loved the drinks and food. The other night was absolutely horrible. 5 beer selections were out. The food was awful. I got the chicken and waffles and they were cold. The chicken was too done and half burnt. My husband got a burger which was so tiny and skinny, the bun was burnt, it only had one shrimp on it, they put almost an entire half of an onion on it and barely any sauce. I never got a refill on my water. Not once did the waiter come over to even check on us. They wouldn't even make eye contact with us because they had to know we were annoyed. There was a table of 3 girls behind us. They checked on them multiple times. A little guy with red hair and dangly earring even came out the kitchen and checked on them. There was another couple behind us as well that got checked on multiple times and not once us. For the price we spent there it was by far the worst experience. I will not return to this establishment. I'm not sure if it has gone under new management or what. They were also playing music so loud at 6pm on Wednesday night. I had to ask someone to turn it down because we couldn't even talk because it was that loud. They turned it down for a bit then put on R&B because the 3 girls requested it and then they turned it back up. The entire vibe was completely off and it was a completely different atmosphere than it use to be by far by the kind of people that were in there and working. First off, I'd like to say that in concept, this place is cool. That being said, walking into an empty bar and restaurant, on a Sunday afternoon, during football season, is never a good sign. These are the reasons I won't be back to the beer wall. -This place is really expensive. It's very VERY easy to run your tab up, because you pull your own beer. The bartender explained that sometimes the beer pull will still run even if the keg is empty. We accidentally added $72 to our tab all because the keg was empty. They did take the extra money off the tab once we said something, but it's not worth the stress. -Half of their beer list was displaying empty on their beer wall. There's no point in offering such a large selection if you can't manage and refill kegs when they run out. -On top of that, the ambiance sucks. There's nothing to do except the free pinball machines upstairs. It was dead quiet inside with no music running. Not even a TV (except on in the back playing movies). Just us, the horribly unprofessional bartender, and an empty beer list. - The bartender barely explained anything until we asked, and once we were pouring our drinks, I turned around, and she was clearly talking about us and laughing. She didn't do much other than stand behind the empty bar talking to another employee. Not necessarily the bartending experience I enjoy. -Back of the house was loud and rowdy. With some guy walking through the dining room yelling about racism. We chose to drink our one drink each and leave. I think this place is a cool idea, but staff needs to be trained on how to approach, speak, and act around customers. They also need to manage their beer selection better, because it's not worth coming in if half the selection is missing anyway. If you're looking for a place that has ambiance and actual people, try West Reading pub or Chatty Monks across the street. read more

Readings most unique beer drinking experience. The staff gives you a beer card good for 32oz.(I think), once it is used up you need to get it recharged. This helps reduce V.I.P.'s and makes for an enjoyable experience. Pour as much or as little of the beers you love or want to explore. The food is also tremendous. The Duck Fat fries are the best fries in town hands down. Live entertainment is nice and doesn't take away from the dining experience. Have this place a shot tonight for beer and dinner. The beer wall is a good idea. You get a card and you scan it and pour your own beer. You can try as many as you want it you pay per ounce. The beer can get expensive depending on how much you pour. The dinner was good. We split the pretzel bites and the brisket Mac and cheese. The pretzels were good and so was the Mac n cheese. As far as the "brisket," however, it was more like pot roast. Also, I asked for no onions but was told everything is pre-made and therefore onions could not be removed. Average. I had one great experience, and one super poor experience, and will probably not return for anything other than drinks. Update : Update : WE have since been back a few times. If you want a great experience go on a weird time when no one is there. The food is awesome. THe beer thing still bugs me, but they have a great tap list. The concept is awesome, put a credit card on file, get up to a certain amount of ozs before needing to re-up and make sure you aren't a raging drunk , and play free video games. If that was all this place was, it would be a 5 star all day. They also serve food. My first time here, was a weekday afternoon, we got a table near the taps and had a fun afternoon. My second time here, was a weekday afternoon, but the place was packed.. we had a seat all the way in the back of the first floor. The place was jamming, everyone was running around bringing food and what not to the tables. But therein lies the issues, and the reason I wont' go back. The Beer Wall sells itself on the fact that you can try a bunch of different beers. If you're a craft beer person, 30+ taps and good taps at that, and being allowed to pour a few oz of each instead of having to order a full or half pour, its pretty amazing tbh... until you try to equate having a meal and /or conversation while doing that. It just feels like you're constantly getting up to get a beer, instead of spending time with the person you're eating with. Interesting concept. They did a good job on the inside décor. I expected a better beer selection. Besides the macros on tap, they had a bunch of crazy beers on tap, which can be good or bad depending who is looking for what beer at any given time. I just didn't think the list was very balanced. Besides the stouts, strong ales, sours and such, they had several double IPA's (some hazy, some not), but not one single IPA. The ability to pour your own beer and choose the amount is cute, but I personally like to sit at a bar and engage with the bartenders. We ordered a few snacks to try, the sirloin skewers were tasty, the cheese planks were good, but the pretzels tasted horrible and had a bad, non-pretzel texture.
