This is a great place for beer lovers. There's also a handful of ciders to choose from (more my speed). Servers are knowledgeable and can recommend drinks based on your preferences. You can also sample anything for free, so don't hesitate to "try before you buy". Food-wise, you can't go wrong with the giant pretzel (big enough for 4 people). The pizza is also always delicious. Sad they replaced their delicious reaper dip with more "trendy" menu items aka avocado toast. A little random for a casual beer joint, in my opinion. My takeaway: The perfect place for beer fans. I really like the beer market! I have spent many many evenings in beer places similar to this, where they have a very large selection of draft beers and an even larger selection of bottled and canned beers imported from all over the world. There's plenty of indoor seating at small and large tables for example if you have a large group. They also have outside seating when the weather is nice. They have a relatively simple food menu to accompany all of their great varieties of beer but it is just the kind of food you need. I like the idea of the Beer Market more than I actually like the Beer Market. All beer lovers should flock here because their craft beer selection is enormous, I'm thinking more options than I've ever seen at a gastropub. So a few things about the Beer Market that leave a really bad taste in my mouth: Came in with some friends at the end of our nursing semester back in December and we opted for a bottle of champagne to celebrate. There were four of us splitting the bottle, the bottle was $48 and the bartender evenly distributed 4 glasses filled to the top (usual champagne pour) When my glass was empty, the other girls had switched to beer but I wanted to stick with sparkling. I ordered a glass and was given the same exact pour, up to the rim. A glass was $8. Are you feeling what I'm putting down? A bottle is $48, a glass is $8. The bottle poured 4 glasses, which means if we went for individual glasses instead of the bottle, our bill would have come to $32 before tax. However, ordering the bottle, which distributed the same quantity, came to $48 before tax. Come again? We aren't talking pennies here, $16 difference, what a rip off. In my experience, when you order a bottle, you take the glass price, multiply it by four and take off two bucks. That's the incentive for getting a bottle over a glass, you'll save a buck or two. I casually brought it up to the bartender because an hour into our time there we had exchanged friendly banter and I thought it was okay to casually mention it, he had no idea what I was talking about and then my friends just told me to let it go so I did. That should be fixed, ASAP. Am I right though? Within the group, there was about 12 of us, we took a long high top table and drank for a few hours, the atmosphere here is laid back and relaxing, so that aspect I enjoyed and although we weren't eating, our server wasn't making us feel rushed. In fact, when I had the menu opened to beer, our server came over to me and asked what I liked in a beer. I told him ones I've had in the past and shortly after, he came over with three small glasses of beers selected by him that he thought I may like. How cool is that? I still stuck to the champagne, but it was a nice gesture and showed this dude really knew his beer, which you'd think would be a prerequisite to work here. Entirely different experience in regards to service the next time I came in. Got here around 11:50 and we sat ourselves as instructed. Before I had a second to open the drink menu I was asked what I wanted to drink. I asked for a couple of minutes and 30 seconds later she was back. My friend knew what he wanted, but being that the menu has an unbelievably extensive number of drinks, 30 seconds didn't cut it. LITERALLY 30 seconds after that she came back over to see if I was ready. For real? There was only one other table in the entire restaurant and the shift had just begun. Not sure why she was rushing us but it was annoying. But that was nothing, stay tuned. So I decided to go for a glass of sparkling. So I said, "I'l have a glass of sparkling please." Then the server said, "Okay so like what kind, club soda or?" I kind of thought she was kidding, but she wasn't. So then I said, "Sorry, no, I mean alcohol, sparkling wine, prosecco." She wasn't aware they had sparkling wine there so I had to point it out on the menu. ANYWAYS...our third guest arrived shortly afterwards and before he had a chance to open the drink menu she asked what he wanted to drink. He obviously needed some time too so she asked if we were ready to order. NO. We hadn't opened the food menus yet geez louise our third guest JUST sat down. 30 seconds later she was back to take the food order. I honestly thought we were being Punk'd. Luckily their food menu is super small so I was able to spit something out since she was clearly in a rush, being 30 minutes into her shift and all. I went with the tuna sashimi salad and the guys went with pulled pork sandwiches. The food came out so quickly and my salad was surprisingly delicious. It had slices of tuna with a pepper crust, romaine lettuce, red onion, tomatoes and goat cheese in a sesame ginger dressing. The salad was $14 which I didn't think was unreasonable. I was asked if I wanted my plate cleared before I was finished eating on two occasions. The server dropped the checks before we were done with our drinks. She did the "Oh is this all set?" clearly before we had slipped our credit cards inside. It kind of ruined the experience for me in all honestly. It would have been one thing if she was waiting to seat another party at our table, but like i said, there were two tables total in the entire place and she rushed us from start to finish. The whole point of eating in a restaurant is the experience and I would have much rather sat at the bar or gone somewhere else where I didn't feel like a nuisance. I came here on a Friday after work and had a great time. I was celebrating a friend's last day at his job before moving on. There was a large group of us so we got there are early as possible to ensure we would have enough seating available. Since there were so many of us we had our own wait staff for the evening and it was really nice. We all got drinks and food. The drinks were great! They were all abundant with so many different choices. I loved all of the cider options and was happy with my pick. The food was also great. We got a bunch of pizzas and pretzels to nibble on. The pizza was so good! I loved every last bite. The pretzels and cheese were also amazing. I would come here again just to eat it was so good. The location is pretty good being around so many other places and there is ample parking in the back. Overall, a great place to come for some food and great drinks. Pretty good food and a really great beer selection! We started with the giant pretzel and each ordered some sandwiches to accompany our delicious beers. Our waitress was super nice and very accommodating. We sat outside in their nice patio area. We tried to sit inside but it was a little bit too loud for the 10-month old baby with us. They also did not have high chairs for their high tables inside, so we sat at the normal height tables outside, which was not so bad either. We just rotated the baby around on our laps. I saw that this beer bar had moved into the corner spot at College Town, and I was a bit wary - the other college-y beer bar in the area (MacGregor's) is a mess and has some of the worst service I've ever seen. However, I'd heard that they had an impressive beer selection, so I thought I'd give it a try. Simply put, they have one of the best bottle and draft lists I've ever seen in one place in the New York, perhaps even the entire US, beaten only by a couple of craft-ier spots in Brooklyn. I struggle to find Freigeist beers on bottle in import stores, yet they had the Abraxxxas on tap! And at $8.50 a glass! Absolutely amazing. Their food is not bad as well. Their pretzel is huge, delicious, and comes with some of the tastiest house mustard I've ever had. Their deviled eggs are tasty, and with eight to a $4 portion, are very good value snacks. They come with some chili oil on top for a kick. Their artichoke dip was decent, but I would skip it; they use a very sour marinated artichoke in the dip and I could only picture a canned 'choke. Their bratwurst is delicious, and the potato salad and arugula salad that it comes with are as well. The only issue I had with the dish was that the bread was a bit too hard (it's a French baguette). The decor inside is nice, though I would have loved for them to have a biergarten area outside (though that's impractical for WNY haha). I love the tables and everything seems sturdy and no-frills. The service is decent enough at a table, but better at the bar (as it usually is). I see a lot of negative reviews here complaining about the price of the beer. You can't seriously be telling people to skip going to a specialty beer bar and trying a new six pack from the store instead. That's insipid and an insult to the bar industry. I believe that true beer nerds would love this place, and there's always something for everyone on the tap list. This place has me wondering what makes or breaks a business. Despite the underwhelming reviews and consistent complaints on Yelp in terms of service and food, I have never seen a slow day for the Beer Market. So is the lack of competition and quintessential location making up for what it lacks in quality?! I have been to the beer markets a couple of times now and they have definitely improved their service. Last night My friends and I did not have to wait for our drinks and everything was served promptly, our server would check on us regularly and accommodated separate checks even though our party was huge! The food is for sure below average. My friends actually liked the pizza. But the artichoke and goat cheese dip was on the verge of disaster; paired with clumsily cut, low quality toasts that were almost too charred and too harsh for my palate. On the plus side, the beer list goes on and on, so it would be highly unlikely to be craving something that is not on the list. The ambience is really inviting; I honestly did not dislike it as much as everyone else. Could be a good spot for grabbing a drink and chatting with friends. Great selection and large room with tables and benches, very suitable for large groups. There is a menu here that seems to feature pizzas most prominently - and they smelled delicious coming out of the kitchen! One thing I noticed however is that the food took quite awhile to be delivered to the tables. While the selection of beers (both draft and bottled) is staggering, I'm not completely sold on the place because the servers didn't seem to know much about the beer. The seat-yourself policy may also create quite a bit of chaos as the service tends to be happy-go-lucky rather than organized sections. My advice? Sit at the bar and grab a drink. Beer Market, you can do so much better! Your servers need to go to customer service school. That, or you just need to replace them. My husband and I came in on a Friday evening and immediately found a table. The atmosphere seemed very lively with lots of people hanging out after work. The waitress gave us menus and Walked away. After flipping through the pages realizing that the beer selection is huge and over whelming we settled our decisions and was ready to order. The waitress never came back. We had to wave her down. Then she takes our order and leaves. We got our food and drinks about 10 mins later. The waitress never came back to refill or check on us. I scanned the room and saw other people had to wave the waiter or waitress down. Some who were pretty expressive about lack of service. So by the time We were done, we sat for a while to see if someone was going to notice we need a check or box. That didn't happen. We had to waive her down again. We asked for check and box. She gave us a box for the left over pizza. Left and never came back with our check. My husband just got fed up and Walked over to her with his credit card. This is a pretty great little place, especially if you're a college student going to the University of Rochester. It is literally right down the street from the U of R in the new College Town development. When I first heard the name, I thought it was going to be something along the lines of Beers of the World or AJ's Beer Warehouse. I was kind of bummer when I found out that it was a bar. But then I went in and was blown away. Behind the bar they have dozens of different taps, and multiple coolers full of bottles and cans. I'm not really one for bars, especially because I am a hard cider fan, and most bars you go to don't seem to carry any ciders (yet). I was floored when I saw 4 different hard ciders on tap, and knocked on my ass when I looked at their menu and fold an entire page devoted to ciders. This is the kind of bar that I would be happy to meet people out at. And speaking of the menu, on the bottoms of pages they have pairing guides to tell you what beers go best with what food items from the kitchen. This is a pretty classy joint in an unbelievably great location for business with an insane variation of alcohol. I hope this idea catches on at more bars. The problem is that the more you drink, the more difficult it becomes to make a decision based on your level of inebriation. Aside from the massive list of bottled and draught beers, the Beer Market also offers some tasty food at reasonable prices, and the outdoor patio area is perfect to enjoy a beer and some laughs on a warm Rochester night. The only major downside is that this place can get really loud and packed at any point because of its proximity to the UofR(it's located in College Town). This place has a lot of potential and I feel bad giving two stars but the service was terrible. First strike was when we attempted to order a beer that was on tap. The waiter found it easier to tell us which beers they had not run out of. Loved the selection, if the kegs have not all kicked. So our beers were ordered. It took at least 20 minutes for them to arrive to the table. The restaurant was half full with some at the bar, busy but not swamped. We ordered an appetizer and all means upon ordering our beer. The meals came out first, 40 minutes in now, then the appetizer came. The pizza was not as ordered so it was sent back. I am not a hard person to please as I am a pretty patient individual. The service is some of the worst we have received. It's too bad because our meals were actually pretty good. I like the concept, just hope someone can swoop in and save this place. I had the brisket burger and loaded baked potato salad. Was a little put off that they didn't just have fries, but not a big deal. As a whole, the burger was pretty good. Their "artisan bun" was fantastic, and I'd be happy to have all my burgers come on that. The brisket was all right, but it didn't stand out all that much. The burger itself was not great though. I think the servers have a hard job remembering so many beers and kinds of beers and what is recommended they would need to go to Beer school. The service is slow....real slow. One of the worst brunches I've ever had, and by far the worst bloody Mary I've had. Also, what restaurant does not have ketchup. The one highlight was the breakfast pizza as it was pretty tasty. I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place yet. I'm here regularly for trivia nights and always have a good time. The beer selection is out of this world. The staff are super friendly and knowledgeable about what they have. If you become a regular they learn what you like and recommend new things all the time. Even new staff will ask what you like and make suggestions. Always willing to let you try something before you commit to it. The food is standard pub fare - not mind blowing but also not what I come for when I'm here. The pretzel is probably my favorite thing on the menu and the pizzas aren't bad either. I understand I'm walking into a bar that prominently caters to the nearby university. Heck it is one of the crowning jewels of Rochester's newest developments and trending areas called Collegetown. I came for a good beer, as the name suggests.... The beer Market. From the outside this place just looks cool and calls you to explore. From the sidewalk pedestrians are treated to hints of bar elements that make a good bar seem like it is a GREAT bar. Large clear windows offer fantastic people watching from inside out and outside in. 3 separate fire pits line the "al fresco" dining or drinking section that conveniently blend into the public sidewalk. While the fire pits are kinda generic in construction they allow Beer Market to keep up with more chic establishments of East Ave. Beer market has four areas in which local patrons should judge them by (my personal opinion) The people watching. The beer selection. Atmosphere. Food. People watching. This place has some pretty people here. Doesn't matter if you straight, gay, just turning 21 or 71. Your eyes are bound to see something that excites the libido. Just keep in mind, it's people watching. Not people engaging. Clearly this place caters to a straight community. Additionally the combination of 9 huge TVs all tuned to sports + a healthy selection of high octane beers + a majority of college students from all over including duck dynasty mind set members + libido triggering visuals can a recipe of disaster for the quiet shy type who may just happen to not be straight. If you're a drag queen or thick skinned LGBTIQ who likes beer, come on in. If not you may enjoy the people watching from the outside fire pits. Now I don't condone judging any book by its cover, and clearly the majority of patrons are fine people who most likely would be appalled at any show of racism or bigotry, but the place is tight and close quarters. Mean people suck, be wise. This place has enough signs on the walls that we've all seen the tee shirt version of the same sign that they could afford to have some that encourage tolerance and golden rule. The lack of anything to remind people while drinking to be kind to each other isn't typically something I expect to see; however something about this place makes me feel like it's a more than a good idea. People watching.....half a star. The beer selection This place boosts an incredibly impressive beer list. Yeah, The beer market. Having a whole page of their 30 page menu dedicated to "fruit or fruity" beers helps ensure even those who don't like beer have something they can enjoy. While they don't offer any beer flight specials they do allow you to create your own flights of and many beers as you wish. The expansive draft beer selection displays Brand, beer style, brewery, country of origin, country region, ABV, how it's served, glass price and price when part of a choose your own adventure flight. Well done BM! 1.5 stars for an awesome selection. Atmosphere From the outside looking in this place just looks cool and huge. Once you walk in it become clear you've been duped. This place is small by average bar standards. With about 6 eight person beer hall style tables taking up most of the main dining room floor this self seating establishment finding seating for more than yourself can be a challenge. If you plan to have friends join you, send a scouting party in advance and instruct them to hold any ground they can. Drinking, jukebox lots of people I close proximity,and 9 TV's makes this place is loud. Don't try to have any deep conversations. Plan on yelling-so keep your secrets for another night. Between the occasional group of guys yelling at what ever sports-play was good or bad on TV; patrons are regularly treated to the squelches of excited and partially drunk flocks of ladies. During the daytime the Windows allow enough light to make you forget that you might be in a small place. Come night time, the dim Edison lightbulb fixtures cast a warming yellow glow....like the barley drinks they serve. Overall, BM has the right atmosphere to make you comfortable enough to to make it a one bar night or a great kick off spot or night ending refuge. Another star rewarded for atmosphere alone. Food When you enter BM you are greeted by the aroma of bar food. But hold your horses... That's not the smell of BBQ wings and fries. Actually it's the smell of gourmet pizzas, oversized pretzels and yet to be discovered fried something. As one reviews the 30 page beer menu each page advertises different pizza types or ingredients to choose from or reveals the limited menu choices. If you walk in with the munchies this place will cure them. If you find that you need some bread type substance to balance the high octane beers choices, this place has that covered. Came in on a Monday night with my sister for a relaxing evening, I love this place! Granted it wasn't as packed as I'm sure it is many other days of the week but there were a few tables and the bar was probably half-full: decent for a Monday at 8:30. I love the decor, rustic but very near and clean, great for a beer spot and plenty of TVs so you can view at least a few from any spot. We each ordered a flight (4 beers) and then had a pizza to share. For the pizza we did the Popeye and added mild sausage...GREAT choice by the way. The pizza was doughy and very good, possibly could have been taken out a minute earlier because the cheese was a bit crusty but the flavor was great and we are the whole thing. I really enjoyed 3/4 of my beers! I chose them all but if you're unsure you can just let the bartender know what you like and they will create one for you. I'd love to come to watch a hockey or basketball game at the bar, and I'd definitely return for the beer and food! They circulate the beers on tap very frequently so you'll never get bored. The arti-goat dip is delicious (eat it while it's hot), the pizzas are fresh and yummy (still a little doughy as I like them), and the pretzel is fabulous (get Extra cheese). Pleasantly surprised by this place. Came here for work lunch, we got some apps including a pretzel and hummus. I don't even like pretzels but this big soft pretzel was so warm and soft it was hard to resist. The hummus was adequate. Ordered a pizza, and I will warn you, these pizzas are big! I had the Farmers special, with pesto and balsamic. The pesto could have had more flavor but otherwise the pizza was fresh and decent. Worth checking out this place! read more

Don't get me wrong. I think this place has the potential to be a solid 4-star establishment, and I love how convenient it is for me, just a 10 minute walk from my place. But for now, they only get three stars. And the reason is the service. I went with a few friends on a weeknight when it wasn't too busy just to have a beer and some food. We ended up waiting quite a while for anyone to come over to take our order and when we were ready for a second, we sat for 40 minutes before finally hailing a waiter and just asking for the check. My second experience there was actually quite improved, though there was still a significant delay, out of proportion to the number of guests there. I think they just need to get into the flow of having a busy place. The good things about this place: location, size of space, outdoor area (though it's currently overlooking a dirt/stone empty lot), extensive draft and bottle list, and decent food, especially the pretzel which is HUGE and delicious. Things to improve: flights are expensive for what you get ($10-12 for four 4oz beers), they've had a few menu items (beer and food) "unavailable" both times I've been there, and the service I'll definitely be back, hope they continue to get better each time. read more

Appears to be a popular hang out for the local medical community and U of R students. Extensive beer selection from every possible place in you can think off. Pizza is delicious and their gigantic pretzel is also quite amazing. Kind of loud, so its kind of hard to have a conversation. read more
