We went for the lunch time happy hour specials ! $4 beers, $8 cocktails , & a variety of appetizers that are discounted. We ordered the Sensory overload cocktail which was a very strong beverage . With every sip came with a strong taste of tequilla. Perfect for those who like it on the rocks. I also had the strawberry martini which was so sweet and refreshing ! The octopus ceviche was amazing ! Its very fresh ! I wish they did add more to their happy order portion as it was tiny . I ordered the beeside burger and chicken sandwich. I am a ketchup fanatic and i have to say the ketchup is fresh. Its not sweet but more of a tomato sauce. The burger was bland, but the toppings are what made up for the lack of flavors. This is the same for the chicken sandwich. The fries were very good i really did enjoy them. The service was okay. It was not busy, but our server did take quite a while to come around. Nonetheless the atmosphere is very calm , and i really enjoyed the island/beach music they were playing. Came for my son's birthday and our server was so attentive and gave my son lot of special attention. Great service,view, and quality food. Ample seating on a Wednesday night. Went here last night with my gf and wow......Let me go ahead and lay down some education when it comes to making risotto and I can't believe I have to do this with a restaurant like this but when you see something you have to say something Seafood risotto should never be loaded with cheese ....it completely clashes with the natural saltiness of the seafood and turns the whole dish into a salty mess This wasn't a creative twist, it was just wrong. the rice was overcooked the seafood tasted like it was added as an afterthought and the whole thing was barely edible. I ate the mussels and left the rest for the garbage disposal. If this kitchen thinks this is acceptable someone needs to step in and fix it. I want my money back for that mess. Walking in it is a little noisy. But that is a good thing since the restaurant is full of people! The food was delicious, I ate the Lamb Loin Chop. Which was cooked perfectly. A gorgeous brunch spot that overlooks the ocean! The other brunch spots nearby are super busy, and I was shocked that this restaurant didn't garner more attention; it's an amazing place for food and has great vibes! - PARKING - La Jolla will always be tricky for parking! I would recommend just parking a few blocks down and walking over as you'll get stuck in a traffic jam the closer you get to the coast! - SERVICE/ENVIRONMENT - Settled on the second floor next to another brunch establishment. You can take the escalator up, and you'll be right at the check-in desk for the restaurant. I wish they had more outdoor/patio seating, but they do open up the doors so that even the tables inside have the outdoor feel. After taking our order, our drinks and appetizer came out very fast! Unfortunately, there must've been some delay once more customers came in because we waited almost 20-25 minutes for our entrees to come out... I also noticed another table complaining to the waiter about how other tables seemed to be getting their food but they arrived first. It must've just been a hiccup with how fast service was initially. - FOOD - PEI Mussels ($26.00): WOW. These might be the best mussels I've ever had! The mussels themselves were very fresh, the sauce they cooked them in was absolutely delicious, and the toasted bread served alongside the dish was amazing!!! I wish they gave more slices of bread so we could soak up all the leftover sauce on the bottom! Poutine Bowl ($18.00): We're suckers for Poutine, so when we saw this as an option for Brunch, we immediately wanted to try it! The eggs on top were a bit overcooked unfortunately, and we didn't get the egg pop we were hoping for. Still, the dish overall was pretty tasty, just a bit salty towards the end. Spanish Octopus ($30.00): Seared perfectly, and the octopus was similar to the mussels in the fact it was very fresh. Nice complimentary salad beneath the octopus as well. Black's Beach ($13.00): The description of this cocktail sounded good, but it ended up tasting just like liquor. We were searching for the grapefruit and lemon flavor, but it was missing. Prickly Pear Ginger Beer: I wasn't feeling a cocktail, so I opted for a mocktail instead, which I love they have a separate list of! Two stars because my companion's chicken gyros were OK. I ordered a cheese omelet that was inedible. Even the potatoes were bad -- undercooked little cubes. The cheese in these eggs was an awful blend with a very odd aftertaste. About the only good thing I have to say is that the fries were excellent. If only the rest of the food was! read more

I hosted an early dinner here for my MeetUp Fun Diego Ladies group. Parking in La Jolla is always a challenge, so I made a dinner reservation for 5pm so that we could find parking without having to drive around in circles. Our group of 7 all drove separately and were able to find free street parking near the restaurant. I had originally reserved a table on the balcony so we could enjoy a view of the ocean, but it ended up drizzling so the hostess proactively reserved a nice table for us indoors. She also reserved a table for us inside the speakeasy. I ordered the PEI mussels and really enjoyed this dish. There was less broth than what I normally see at other restaurants, but it was well seasoned and the mussels were cooked just right. I would have liked just a bit more sauce so I could dunk my toasted bread. The salmon tartare had too much sauce and ended up being a bit too creamy. I did not care for this appetizer and was rather disappointed. The crab cake was a bit too dry and over fried. It looks like the crab cake ball was thrown in a deep fryer, as opposed to being pan fried, so it was crispy hard and oily. It was served on a bed of arugula that was drenched in dressing. It was about the size of a giant meatball, so I thought it was a bit pricey. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with a beehive theme. After dinner, we stopped into the speakeasy located on another side of the restaurant. It was very small, cozy, and beautifully decorated. I especially loved the flowers hanging from the ceiling. The bottomless mimosa is what initially drew me in but the service and taste will keep me coming back! I've been to the Del Mar location but service was kinda slow there. I decided to try this location since it's closer to me and the service was 10x better! This review is for its speakeasy, The Honey Pot (formerly known as The Hive), inside the Beeside Balcony in La Jolla. Reservation is suggested. You enter this speakeasy through the giant framed portrait located in the hallway by the bathrooms. The decor inside is beautiful, with flowers hanging from ceiling and wallpaper with giant roses. It is a small, cozy room with faux candles everywhere. There is also a DJ spinning tunes from 7pm. I love the food at Beeside Balcony but inside the Honeypot, you aren't allowed to order from restaurant menu. Instead, The Honeypot had a restricted shareable menu with small appetizer sized portions. We tried the beet salad, chicken skewers, sliders with truffle fries and cheese plate. Everything was delicious but portions were small. The cocktail drinks were good, with mocktails on menu as well. It was mostly empty when we were there so very quiet and relaxing vibe. If management is reading this review, my 2 suggestions would be (1) to lean into Honey Pot theme and have more honey inspired drinks, food and desserts, and (2) to allow food to be ordered from your amazing restaurant menu and not restrict to smaller bar menu. read more

Stopped by Bee Side Balcony for dinner, but after seeing the prices and realizing the portions were on the smaller side, we decided to just stick with appetizers. The mussels were amazing, cooked in this rich sauce that would be perfect for pasta, and the oysters, with the feta, were unexpectedly delicious. The escargot had just the right amount of garlic, and the tzatziki was ridiculously fresh. The food definitely hit the mark, but the overall vibe was more like a 3.5-star experience. The décor felt a bit off with all the artificial plants and candles, and with only a couple of people at the bar on a weekend night, it felt weird. Service was good, but a bit awkward, which took away from the experience. If you're just after the food, it's worth a visit, but don't expect everything to line up perfectly with the price tag. read more

I am a BIG fan of Beeside Balcony in Del Mar, so I was stoked to find another location open up in the heart of La Jolla! This spot seems to be just a touch on the richer side with cream/butter, but delicious nonetheless! The PEI mussels never fail to disappoint me with that savory, garlicky broth. The grilled oysters too? Gorgeous and flavorful! Lamb meatballs were not as much my thing, but there's so much more I'd still order on the menu. Nice decor here and I'd love to come back when there's live music. Most impressive though was the attentiveness of the staff, from the hosts to the servers. The owner, Christopher Cevasco, is third generation Spanish and Italian descent (from Paris, France). Look up and you will see Beeside Balcony.  There is a broken escalator, stairs, or an elevator to get up there.  Lots of outdoor seating and some inside.  This will be an awesome place to dine when the weather warms up.  There is a view of the ocean between some tall buildings.   I had a sparkling lavender honey lemonade while I enjoyed the view.  Huge burst of lemon flavor with a light lavender flavor.  Quite an eye opener. I visited for dinner and ordered the filet mignon cooked medium.  Light char on the outside while the rest was juicy and tender.  I was very impressed by the almost melt in your mouth tenderness.  Rich beef flavor.  I dipped a piece of filet mignon in the au poivre sauce and it was delicious.  This and wild mushroom sauce are my favorite steak sauces. Rosemary fries were crispy with soft insides.  Rosemary and salt combined with the fried potato flavor to make for some delicious fries. Creme brulee had a hard sugary top with sweet cream beneath.  Loved the sweet vanilla flavor mixed with the fresh berries. Beeside Balcony combines dishes found in my favorite steakhouses with a bright energetic vibe you'd expect from a beachfront breakfast spot.  Service was excellent. read more

And if you know me - cinnamon has no place in soups... was not good. Food tastes disgusting to say the least. I ordered scallops which were soggy, I never knew a place that could mess up on such a simple piece of seafood. There was no bread and I had to order toast. The meatballs that were lamb and beef tasted like I licked a lamb' bare ass. It was the most astounding thing I ever tasted in my existence. Guen and her team were incredibly understanding and accommodating, the food was delicious, and the price point was much more reasonable than some other places in the area! We booked out the main dining area and patio - although it was semi private, in effect we had all the privacy we needed. The sliders and crab cakes were huge hits. The filet mignon and meatballs were super good. And the staff was some of the kindest I've ever met in my life. Our waitress tended to our daughter and was so sweet to her, making her feel so comfortable. They brought out her food fast since she was getting kind of frustrated (as sleepy kiddos usually do), and made sure she had what she needed the whole time. And the front desk person was super kind. We got drinks as well which turned out pretty good! I got a strawberry fields and my partner got a honey based drink i forgot the name of. Drinks were good but a bit expensive. Appetizers we got the salmon croquette which was good but the middle was cold... I'm not sure if that's how it's supposed to be? The soup was also good but there was alot of small shells that got broken in the soup and the serving sizes were tiny. Entree we got the fish and steak. I ordered my steak medium/medium rare and got something I feel was on the rare side. I was struggling to slice into it and it was insanely chewy. We asked them politely if we could get a new steak cooked more, but got the same steak back just stuck into an oven or something. Still super chewy. The fish was good but we kept biting into something hard every other bite. Still not sure what it was. Dessert was the smores cake and churros. The churros were good but the smores cake was super sweet. In the end we couldn't fully enjoy the meal since we couldn't really eat the entrees without issues... Maybe next time.. read more

I chose this place because of the menu. They had a section in the menu labeled "Plant-Based". I am vegan and have been for seven years so I know very well that plant-based means derived from plant products as opposed to animal products (meat eggs diary). I ordered the pasta. It came and I made my sister try it because it was so good. She tried it and told me it tasted like real cheese (she is not vegan). I asked the waiter what kind of vegan cheese it was because it tasted so real and he informed me that it was not vegan. This review has nothing to do with the service or ambiance, but rather solely to get the attention of the restaurant to change the name of that section to "vegetarian" or something. I am vegan partly because I am mildly allergic to dairy and I did feel quite ill after having ate a few bites. PLEASE CHANGE THE NAMING ON THE MENU! I don't even care if you don't have vegan options, but don't mislead people. Plant-based means vegan point blank period. read more

The 4 scallops were presented on a board of puréed cauliflower, dressed with mango and smoky chunks of chorizo that made us burp all night. The smokiness of the chorizo was tasty and the dish over all was too heavy. Ah, Beeside Balcony - a hidden gem of a restaurant nestled along the breezy shores of La Jolla. My friend and I made reservations to sample their much buzzed about Mediterranean fare. We weren't greeted so we wandered in to try and procure our table for lunch. We decided to start with the hummus trio, which came out looking like a colorful bee garden arranged on a slate - the artichoke hummus glowed emerald green and the roasted red pepper hummus shimmered a vibrant ruby. Alongside, the hot pita waited like eager worker bees ready to transport these lovely pollen packs from plate to palate. The hummuses were smooth, creamy and herbaceous - we would have lapped them up with our tongues if society allowed such behavior! Next came the melted feta sandwich, ooey and gooey with tomatoes and cartelized onions, the perfect snack to share. As we passed halves back and forth across the table, the cheese strands stretched and snapped like elastic bands - I swear I heard a faint "boing!" sound effect. After polishing it off, we flaggged down our server to compliment the chef...and order another. The final act was the veggie risotto, creamier than a larva cocoon, seasoned to perfection. Each kernel of rice sat fat, happy and smiling, bathing in a broth of garden-fresh veggies - tomatoes, spinach, asparagus and peppers - that made us buzz with joy. As the sun set over the Pacific, we leaned back, patted our bellies and watched the real bees lazily returning to their hives. Hello, I am leaving a bad review purely because of the hazardous rail that is a HUGE danger to it's customers. The food/service was fine, but that rail is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I tripped over the railing and cut my toe, and I am not exaggerating when I say we saw SEVERAL other people trip over it as well. If an elderly person fell over it (any other person for that matter), they could fall and someone could seriously injure themselves. My friend was saying I should've said something about my toe to them, but I was too shy. But we both agree it's important this is made down and that the company do something about it. However, I am SURE they know about it. In our one hour that we dined there, I think 4 people tripped on it, so I'm sure they see tens of people tripping on it every single day. They should replace the open doors maybe with a garage door so that they don't need the rail. read more

This place was delicious! It was a little confusing on where to find it exactly. Location is located on the second level. The inside was very nice and the food was great! For the appetizer we had the most popular recommendation, which was the trio dips with pita bread. The pita bread was one of the best pita breads I've had. Nice fluffy with good spices on it. For the main course ordered the filet and lamb. Both were very good. The sides for both were just alright. The fries that come with the filet did not have any rosemary coming through. Would have been nice to have some sort of sauce for them. The Lamb had a jasmine purée that was a little strong. The drink menu is also very good! I had the lavender bees knees. The wines, beer and mixed drinks were top level. The food was fantastic.
