I swear that's why I've always loved tofu! And I'm mostly vegan now the past 28 years, and my mother the past 12. This place is a staple in New Haven and testament to their good food for staying open all these years. When Claire's first opened vegetarian restaurants weren't a thing, and over the years the menu has shifted.. but it's always good. For me it's home cooking style, comfort food.. they have their own style. This place was around before everyone was freaking out about carbs.. thank god! I never leave without a cookie and a muffin for later.. they're the best! I recently got hooked on the Sunbuttter cookie, and also enjoy the Lithuanian coffee cake muffin. Soups and salads come with the classic Claire mini loaf! A delicious buttery(is it vegan? don't know) mini loaf of bread, just as tasty as I remember it from my childhood. Their oat milk Matcha Lattes are creamy and they don't slack on the matcha. The service is always friendly and helpful. The menu accommodates vegetarians, vegans, and gluten free options as well. enjoy!

My only regret and disappointment is that it's been open for seven years and this is the first time I've discovered this wonderful find in the heart of New Haven. I have been looking to come to this place for sometime, but you do need to do reservations for a Saturday night. I didn't want two weeks earlier through Resy. Full disclosure, I get a credit from American Express as part of their partnership with Resy and this is one of the locations that you can obtain that benefit from. We arrived shortly before our reservation time and waited in line as two other groups were turned away as they were all booked up for dinner until much later in the evening. Once inside, I understood as it is not a large dining area. The motive is very Indian forward with images of transportation themes from India, including bicycles on the ceiling above the tables. To start with, the drinks were some of the most flavorful options I have had in some time all with a very traditional Indian twist. I am not big on coconut or tequila, but my wife loved her coconut tequila drink. I thought the Manhattan was a big hit as the date balanced out the flavors perfectly. Even the cold drink, my daughter got reminded me of getting the same back in India. I personally was not a big fan of the mango lassi. My son got but he loved it. It was a bit thick for my taste. With regards to the food options, this reminded me of being in Manak Chok in India. For those that don't know, that is an area in western India known for its street foods and late night dining. The smells and tastes of the food would fit right in there. We started with the Dahi puri. This was a big hit for the entire family. You get six items in the order and this is a great place to start, especially if you like the balance of the street food. The Chaat Dog was also a big hit. We got the option with Lamb covered in chaat. The role was toasted perfectly and the balance of the flavors really hit well. The entire family enjoyed the chicken stuffed naan with the side of the sauce. I will admit it had a bit of a kick, so be careful for those who are not looking for spice forward foods. I have always been a big fan of Chole Bhature (chick peas and puffed whole wheat fried bread). The one here was nearly perfect as served. I was saying to my wife, that it could only be made better with a little bit of raw onion on top. As luck would have it, the waitress overheard my comment and next thing you know, we had a side of chopped onions and lime, the perfect topping for this dish. With regards to the biryani, it was flavorful, though it has never been my favorite thing. It comes with a side of raita as well. Again, that is not something I really enjoy. However, all three of my family enjoyed this immensely, and the serving was so generous, we had a decent amount of leftovers after our meal. We finished the night with some mango kulfi. It was too large scoops as you can see by the picture. This was the perfect sharing dessert for the four of us to conclude our meal. As noted above, our waitress was super attentive and very quick to bring out the dishes and drinks throughout our dinner. I will note that the price point is also great for New Haven restaurants as the complete meal with drinks for all and a dessert came out to $120 before tax and tip. This is definitely a place I would strongly recommend for any in the area. If you're not close by, book a reservation before you come down so it's not to miss out on this amazing experience. It is definitely worth a try if you want a traditional Indian street food experience. They do also have options like more traditional Punjabi style restaurants on the menu, but we focused more so on the street food options during our first visit. I will update further as I experience this place again which I expect to happen in the very near future.

I actually tried calling the restaurant to make this request, but they didn't answer after a few attempts. Fortunately, they did it proactively. I ordered the Beef Thukpa (cold spicy noodles) and the Sha Khodhak. The cold noodles were good, and I appreciated the cake, although not too spicy. What I do like, even though it may not be the traditional way to eat it as you can microwave it if you choose. If I were to order it again, I might try it warmed up. But for me, the star of the show Sha Khodhak. The tomato sauce was so richly flavored. Absolutely perfect and spiced to perfection. They did not skim with the chicken and they did not add an unnecessary amount of bell pepper and onion. It was perfectly balanced. The leftovers came together even more the next day. It's not too often that you come across a Tibetan restaurant so I've had this place on my list for a few months. I would like to try more of what they offer, but it's going to be hard not to order the Sha Khodhak again.

Walking inside around lunchtime, there was just one other table occupied. The waitress quickly welcomed us and brought us menus. I'll be honest, I was not sure what anything was in the menu. It is sorted into four sections: appetizers, beef, chicken and vegetarian. I went with something from the vegetarian section and hoped for the best. My friend went with the chicken and beef. Shortly after, our food was brought out to us. There's no utensils, everything is eaten by hand. We received "injeras" these are somewhat similar to crapes, primarily used for scooping and dipping into an assortment of food. You'll have to gain some experience with eating with these, if you're like me you'll pretty quickly land a stain on your garment. We received a basket full of rolled up injeras. Our plates also had a large spread out injeras. There were three scoops of traditional vegetable meals, lentils, split peas and green beans. The servings were very generous. I enjoyed the flavor profiles on all of these. They ranged from mildly spicy to a bit more spicy. Now that I have some experience at Lalibela, next time I'll be able to modify and customize my plate a bit more. I appreciate that there are so many ways to perfect your options at Lalibela, everything is very flavorful and the portions are substantial. It takes a bit of getting used to having no silverware.
