Terrible. Awful. Disrespectful. Rude. Uncaring. These are just a few words to describe Bella. The service is beyond terrible. I went in before 5. Ordered a few pizzas for dinner. The place was basically empty. So I assumed I wouldn't be waiting too long. Wrong! After an hour and 15 minutes my food was still not ready. The waitresses had no clue what was going on. They couldnt give me an estimate when my food was going to be ready after 75 minutes. So I left. There are too many other italian restaurants in Raleigh with great pizza and decent service. I will not be going back. I like vics and viva. And I eat a lot of pizza. read more

I like the ambiance of this place, and love their outdoor seating patio, but had a bad experience. I paid about $20 for a pasta dish. As I was driving home, I realized I never received my salad which was included in the price. The next day, I called the restaurant to tell them. I was very polite. The woman who answered the phone was COLD, borderline rude. "What do you want me to do about it? It's a complimentary salad." No apology. Unbelievable. Their salads come on a plate (not a bowl) with huge chunks of iceberg lettuce that you have to further cut, and maybe you get a few cucumbers. The dressing is extremely (and I mean EXTREMELY) watered down. Still, I like to have a vegetable or at least fiber with every meal. I was going to pick up the salad that I paid for and never got to have with a meal at home, but it never happened. Some of their dishes are okay, but taste like frozen dishes and are rather bland. Their sauces are watered down. I'm floored that people like the food here. Guess they don't cook Italian. I'd like to say something good about Bella Italia: Their tiramisu is very good, when it's available, and when it's not frozen in the middle. Most of the time, they're out of tiramisu, at least when I've come. I really don't like to write negative reviews, and rarely do. I love to support local businesses. Just not this one. read more

First time visit, service very friendly, but the specialty tortellini pasta and pizza was underwhelming. Apart from the healthy price the pasta was like a side dish. For $17+ at least give a healthy portion and higher grade of olive oil if that o-oil was used. The white pizza was ok, but not sure why the eggplant had to be breaded. There is already enough bread in pizza and the breading mutes the sweet taste of the eggplant. The $5 side salad was a fist of iceberg lettuce, matched with two small cherry tomatoes and one stranded ring of red onion. The cheese pizza going to other tables looked good and piping hot. We felt we should have just kept the order simple. You can do better for Raleigh here. We are starved for mom and pop Italian. We may give another try, but it may be just the cheese pizza. read more

Our second time here. Service was fine both occasions. Food is ok. Husband liked the Italian Wedding Soup. I did not. Im used to fresh meatballs. They served with some sort of sausage. Im used to a swirl of egg (think egg drop soup), instead their egg seemed hard/par boiled then crumbled & mixed in. Husband thought fettucine was good. I ordered chicken piccata. It came with penne pasta (odd choice)? Sauce was a little gummy, & very lemony. The icing on the cake...when we asked for a plastic container (instead of styro) for leftovers, we were told that she would have to charge us for it (per "chef"). Really? What is the cost DIFFERENCE between styro & plastic container & is it worth enough to alienate a potential regular customer? Will think long & hard before returning, if ever. read more

Stopped in at Bella Italia for lunch today. Not to be confused with the Bella Italia in Wake Forest, this one is on Durant Road. They offer a lunch special - 2 slices plus a soda for $5. The pizza as EXCELLENT! Very large slices of NY style pizza, with the right equation of cheese and sauce. Sauce is slightly sweet - just the way I like it. Cooked till the crust is crunchy. These guys know the fine art of pizza-making! The slices are big enough that I couldn't finish the 2nd one. Which is good news - now I have a midnight snack for later. I'll definitely swing back by this place to try the rest of the menu. If the pizza is any indication, I can't wait to see what else they've got cooking. read more

I've been trying to get myself here for months just to try the place because it keeps coming up on my U-promise App. The cabernet was actually on the tart side... a bit unexpected. bread was fresh, warm and tasty, the meals, though, were pretty darn awesome. I tried a unique seafood dish (no pasta in it) that turned out to be a very good selection. Trey is a pretty good server, knows the menu pretty well and is friendly enough and attentive. However, he and the rest of the front end crew really need to work on the "No Problem" problem (Please, I cannot emphasize it enough, please please please eliminate "no problem" from your vocabulary). The atmosphere has some modern yet seemingly old world flair. By old world I mean the stone facade/features throughout the place. There's plenty of polished tile as well. Lights are dim and there are at least 3 TV's showing sports related coverage. The mens room is "meh" not particularly clean and the stall door needs work. In fact, the mens room in general needs some modernization when it comes time to negotiate a lease extension IMHO. Ended up having a great dinner with my bride, and she scarfed down her leftovers the next day for lunch. Me? I didn't have any leftovers. Looking forward to a return visit - I really want to try their Italian Wedding soup. Just a quick edit for a return visit. Tried the Italian Wedding soup and the pizza. Neither was all that impressive. I suggested to our server that they try the IW soup at competitors like Vincents (Kroger plaza at Lynn & Creedmoor) and/or Sal's (Rte 55 in Durham). Omg. I'm so so happy to see this place still has the same ownership. I've been coming here since I was about 15/16, the last time I came I was probably about to go off to college. I'm now 26 living in denver, home for the holidays on the other side of town. Thought I'd see if Bella was still over this way. I think they still remember me as the "calamari girl" of sorts bc I always came and got the same thing over and over. When I called ahead and they said "we make the calamari fresh here when you arrive" I knew it was them instantly. They have the most amazing garlic knots and pizza. Hidden gem guys. Greek salad was a bunch of lettuce with a few tomatoes and other vegetables on it. Way overpriced. Italian sub was awful, worse than Subway. Hardly any meet or cheese. Pizza is on par with what is served in the lunch lines at a public middle school. Bruschetta is soggy and sad. Most people could do a significantly better job at home, even if it was their first time making anything Italian. Not a lot of good food options around this part of north raleigh and places like this are the problem. I did a search earlier this year to find a place that had good authentic New York style pizza. Well Bella Italia popped up and I decided to give it a try. I absolutely fell in love with their pizza by the slice and I have ordered their pizza as whole a few times. Delicious! I hadn't eaten here for several years, but I was in a mood for Italian so I ordered a few things. I don't know if they were having an off night, but the tortellacci marsala I got, the marsala wine hadn't been cooked down properly and there was raw wine in the sauce that basically made it inedible. The tortellini carbonara wasn't bad per se but was under-seasoned and the sauce was gummy with flour that hadn't been cooked into the sauce properly. I might give the pizza a chance at some point due to close proximity to my house, but after the screwups on the pasta dishes (especially at the cost for them) is a red flag. read more

Birthday dinner and I wish we never went here. What a pathetic display of Italian food. 5 dinners and 4 were all breading. Which tells me these entrees were all frozen. No one finished their plate. I ordered spaghetti and meatball puttanesca. The sauce prepared was so overly spiced like they poured a bottle of red pepper flakes on my plate. I could not even eat the food with enjoyment. My family and I eat Bella Italia food often! We enjoy the chicken parm sub, grilled chicken sub, fettuccine Alfredo, French fries (they are cooked fresh and crispy, and they are real sliced potatoes) so good crispy! Lasagna, chicken parm dinner, the lobster ravioli is a favorite as well! And of course the New York style pizza! The pizza is the best! We enjoy the fresh crispy cooked not too thin, not too thick pizza crust, the sauce is perfect and the mozzarella cheese always tastes fresh. The new owners are very hospitable and kind! We have had dinner here in the past and it was delicious. Yesterday was different. It was a take out but that should not be any different. After eating a bit we all decided it was no better than cafeteria food. The meatballs were obviously the frozen kind I can get in any grocery store. The sauce - no flavor - just a canned tomato sauce. Please hire another chef or change your recipes. We are from NY so we are off to find another cozy Italian restaurant. Bella Italia has great food. The pizza is my favorite. The reason for this review is the service. My daughter and I showed up on Saturday night for dinner around 7:00. It was crowded but there were quite a few open tables. The hostess said it would be 15-20 mins to be seated. We left because there should have been enough servers to cover the open tables. We will go back to eat there, but they need to add help to cover the open tables. read more

This is my regular spot for Italian food and pizza. Their marinara pie is to die for. When I moved here from Scottsdale, AZ I was so sad that there was no Grimaldi's here as their pizza is hard to be replicated and it is so distinctive and delicious because they use a coal fired oven and the ingredients are so pure and fresh. I have tried pizza at so many places here in Raleigh, and while good, nothing could compare to the Grimaldi's pizza. Until I found Bella Italia. You can taste the purity in all of the ingredients. The quality of the tomatoes in the sauce, the cheese and the pizza dough. You can tell it is extremely fresh and simplistic. This marinara pie is so good that I do not even get any toppings. It is just the cheese, spices and sauce. They also have homemade sausage that is incredible. I have never had anything at this place that is not top notch. Highly recommend. read more

Met another couple for dinner after we talked about Bella Italia after church Sunday. We ordered bruschetta bread and garlic knots for the table and I ordered the mussels in a marinara red sauce with crostini bread which was good but not great. The other couple ordered a salad to share and mussels in a cream white sauce which they raved about. It was better than the marinara sauce. I ordered a salad before my meal which was fresh pretty good. I ordered the Bella Italia which was shrimp, mushrooms and veal in a creamy pink sauce. Not to crazy about the color of the sauce but it was very good but at this time I could finish it because of everything else I ate. My wife ordered the fried ravioli which was actually pretty good and different. The other couple ordered the margherita pizza which came with fresh mazzarella cheese, basil and prosciutto and olive oil. I had a piece of their pizza and it was rather good with the crust just the right thickness. Our was there when we needed him and checked on us a couple other times. Overall the food is pretty good and service as well. My only problem was the limited drink menu, no mixed drinks and several beers in a bottle and one draft on tap. We will definitely visit Bella Italia again. read more

Recently had the WORST experience ever. Called in last Tuesday evening at 6:30 PM. Ordered three pizzas in the middle of one of the worst downpours ever. Ali took my order. I made sure to tell her that I wanted 2 of the 3 pizzas with a soft crust. She told me it would be a 35 minute turnaround since they were slammed. No problem. Arrived at 6:50 PM and saw my pizzas sitting on the rack. When asked how long it had been since they were sitting there, was told that they had just come out. Sweet or so I thought.... Little did I realize the horror that was contained beneath the lid. Since it was raining and I was soaking wet, I didn't bother to check to make sure my crust was soft so that's on me but I still don't think it is an excuse for this establishment. Arrived home at 7:05..the pizzas weren't even warm. Not even lukewarm. Try totally cool. So much so that the cheese was hardened over. I thought to myself, that's on me...that's what I get for ordering pizza in the middle of a rainstorm. So off the microwave to reheat. Should have been a voila and instead it was the saltiest pizza and the soft crust which was requested?/ Yeah that was burnt as in dark brown on the bottom and very little soft dough bread on top. I called in to complain and spoke with Ali again. She was not very apologetic at all. In fact, she never even bothered to apologize but promptly told me that she did her part since she told the chef to make the crust soft. Then she said that the next time I come in, I was welcome to let the owner know. Hold up....next time I come in? Um yeah there are far too many choices out there for me to risk repeating this experience. I gave her a quick lesson on customer service and told her the attitude she was giving me was very unnecessary all things considered. I told her that I expected a phone call from the owner and left my number. He never called to apologize and obviously doesn't care too much that a regular customer had a bad experience. Pity since I had just introduced my mother to this establishment. We will not return. read more
