I'm a little conflicted on how to rate this place. It's the kind of diner that hasn't and doesn't need to evolve much since it opened decades ago. Eggs and potatoes are served on an oval plate, almost everyone's a regular and if you're a traveler just passing through, you're affectionately called "honey." Omelettes are slightly overcooked to have that tinge of brown, but it's expected; this isn't the kind of place that would serve it French style and to want it slightly undercooked means you should be eating at a fancier place around the corner--Sweet Grass Grill. I would come back here not because the food appeals to me--it's too "old school" for my curious palette, but it's a cozy place like a familiar pair of jeans. My coffee was refilled many times, my eggs came out perfect, and they have quite the variety of jellies. If they have orange marmalade my breakfast buddy is happy, and he didn't even have to ask. I went in with my son to grab lunch. I had one of the best turkey clubs that I have ever had. My son, who is probably the most picky eater you will find, got chicken fingers and fries. He refuses to eat fingers or fries unless they are cooked perfectly to his liking. He ate the entire meal without even a comment, until we were leaving where he said they were the best fingers and fries he has ever had. This is huge when you have a 13yo that will eat almost nothing. My wife went with my two sons and he next day. She got bacon Mac and cheese which she loved, and my kids got fingers and fries, which they both scarfed down. My wife also got a very good salad with a great ranch dressing. Great local diner. Cozy and friendly staff. We've been here a few times during our short getaway. They have homemade bagels and donuts. My husband would order a donut every time as a side. He enjoyed the good portion of chicken quesadillas. I loved their Stuffed Avocado with Chicken salad! Nice and simple. The salad comes with half an avocado and the chicken salad is on top of it. A fantastic mom-and-pop breakfast joint in downtown Tarrytown. Super affordable (I had a ham&egg sandwich for less than $4!) and super simple, two things that I am learning to love as a grad student. If there are free tables, feel free to seat yourself and call someone over when you are ready to order. HORRIBLE. The only saving grace was the mediocre food. Walked into the restaurant and were seated immediately so I had high hopes. Quickly went downhill from there. The waitress took our order and forgot to ask if we wanted home fries or French fries. When we realized and went to clarify, she acted annoyed and tried to tell us we couldn't change the order even though we had just put it in. She finally allowed us to change the order and once the food came, we didn't get what we asked for. Ingredients were missing from omelette, sauce was smothered on top of Benedict when we asked for none, toasted was butter when we asked for dry. Food was not warm but it was the least of our worries with all other the other issues. As far as drinks, I got a Diet Coke which had free refills but the bus boy getting the drinks could not be bothered to refill them as evidenced but his continual visible rolling of the eyes. Once the bill came, the rude bus boy put in three diet cokes, trying to charge me for the free refills. They tried to charge us for an extra ice coffee and a side of sausage that we did not order. The bill went from $97 to $83. How unacceptable...rude and trying to overcharge us on top of everything. I don't often leave yelp reviews but I had to after this experience, which is probably top 5 WORST EXPERIENCES I've had at any restaurant I've ever been in. DO NOT GO HERE. read more

A super casual, family diner in the heart of Tarrytown. My family was in town for a funeral, being help up the street. We had time to grab lunch before the service, so we settled in to a booth at Bellas. The booths are tiny (the bottom seat part itself was oddly short and cramped) but the whole place feels warm and welcoming. I ordered the Greek Wrap, with potato salad on the side (instead of fries.) Overall, it was pretty good. Nice-sized wrap, with a generous helping of filling and side of potato salad. Service itself was pretty fast, and definitely friendly and casual. I had an excellent experience at Bellas on a Sunday morning at 8am. I'm a local, but this was my first time at Bellas. I showed up with my husband and toddler on Sunday at 8am, and we were seated immediately. Drink order was taken immediately (thank goodness, because...toddler). Our order was taken quickly after that. We ordered omelettes with slight variations and everything came perfectly cooked and as ordered. Coffee refills came around as well I noticed a very short wait begin to build up, maybe each new party need to wait no more than 5 mins before being seated. The waitress was also strict about not seating a group until the whole party had arrived. Bellas is a no frills diner style restaurant. Some of which is here-say and not even your experience ("I've heard they do a good takeout lunch, too")?? You obviously have not eaten much of what they make. Write about what you actually know. And by the way, for what it's worth, the old paneling has been replaced. And the stucco walls smoothed out and painted. All before your review on 5/14... so what does that tell us? But maybe we should talk accurately about the food. Once you've tasted these dishes, come back and tell us what you think. Not before. Bellas is an authentic, family run business in Tarrytown for 25 or 30 years. There are only three cooks, and they all work closely together -- and consistently. It is a homey, warm place. Yes, an old-school diner vibe. Not fancy. And the food is largely made and served fresh, unlike most of what you get from today's diners. Notably, you can ask, and get, items cooked to your preference, or anything off the menu, if they have the ingredients on hand. They care about what they put out, and they care about serving you what will make you happy. So Ms. B., the breakfasts are straightforward -- and strong. The sausage links are particularly good, and not what you get most anywhere else. Have you tried the Eggs Benedict? The coffee is solid, IMHO, since they do not purport to be Coffee Labs or any other specialty coffee house. The constant wait on the weekends (maybe 10 min.) tells you everything you need to know about Bellas breakfast. The expanded wrap menu is what shines for lunch. I've tired maybe only 4 or 5 (of 15 or 20), but they were all outstanding. Have you ever seen a cheeseburger wrap anywhere else? Reuben wrap? Thanksgiving Wrap? The burgers themselves are very good. Nice char, hand-formed patties, and you get what you order (rare, med rare, med). Thin, crispy fries. The soups are great -- two soups made fresh every day. The French onion au gratin kicks booty, but all are very good. Let's talk about dinner. This is a best-kept secret. People think "diner" and breakfast/lunch and they don't think dinner. The fish is fresh, not frozen. Again, most everything is fresh. Try the salmon over mixed greens. Try any of the fillets. Try the scampi. Try the freshly pounded chicken breast for parmigiana. Tender and crisp. True dat. Try the other chicken finishes... all authentically prepared. Try the meatloaf with mashed, and ask for garlic and oil in the broccoli or spinach on the side. You wanna freak out? Try the short ribs when available. Deep taste and melt in your mouth. Good goulash and beef stew, too. I'm getting tired of typing. I love you Bellas. I have been eating your lovely diner food since I was 4 years old. Even now that I no longer live in Tarrytown, when I am back visiting the folks, I eat your heart warming food. I remember Gus would let me choose a donut after I finished my dinner. I remember chocolate shakes. I remember saturday night dinner out. I remember walking in and the waitresses big smiles. We waited 20 mins asking for a bill that never came so we payed at cashier box. Maybe that's what we were supposed to do. My omelet was way overcooked and my ingredients were under cooked. How can you mess up a omelette. My sausage was billed at close to $5 for 2 pieces of burnt sausage which I tried to send back but my waitress was M.i.a all throughout the meal. We ordered 3 orders of waffles/pancakes and only got 2 syrups and 3 butters. Again completely ignored. The food was terrible and the prices and service didn't make up for it at all. This establishment does not cater to new customers. It is a stop where the wait staff will bend over backwards for the locals (regulars) while ignoring or rudely interacting with its new customers. I've been here a few times and each time the food was barely mediocre. I could have whipped up the dishes I ordered myself and saved a chunk of change as well. Every aspect of the experience was painfully slow. I assume this is because I am not a regular customer. I would sit down at a booth and have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for a menu. Took even longer for my order to be taken and longer still for my food and check. I stopped going to bellas after I got food poisoning the 3rd time. When I talked to my friends about it, two of them confirmed that they also got food poisoning from bellas a month or so before me. STAY CLEAR! Stay home and make your own food.
