This is my second time at Ben Gong's Tea and I have to say...I prefer this location than the one in Gaithersburg! I'm not sure if it was just an off experience there but this location made my drink super tasty. Cheese Mango Slush is one of their popular drinks so I had to try it. I loved the cheese foam and the mango mixed with it sounds weird but it works. The ordering process was easy, they have a self-checkout. The drinks came out quick too. I wish I could rate this place higher. Ultimately though, the green tea had the typical bitterness that I can only attribute to steeping for too long, and the brown sugar boba was considerably sweeter than what we've come to expect. On the latter, we could tell immediately that it was brown sugar boba and paradoxically, the extraordinary sweetness helped offset the bitterness of the tea. Having said that, fresh tea should not be this bitter, and as a result, it didn't make for a great tea drinking experience. Service was unremarkable once we got across what we needed to communicate to place our orders. The cheese foam was pretty good as well, it was salty and creamy, and I like how they put a lot of it in the drink. I thought the boba was just okay though, it was a little hard for my liking. I go to Ben Gong's Annandale far often than I should because I love the snow drinks and the sparkling drinks! They are my go tos. I've been less inclined to come because it's just slow. If you order and you're super thirsty, I would recommend maybe walking to the block or doing some grocery shopping and then come back. Our two drinks took 16 minutes? And people who ordered before were also waiting. Everyone was waiting. 15 minutes is way too long for a boba shop. It's supposed to be in and out. I had the same issue with wait times at Ben Gong's in Centreville which I wrote a review about. I rarely write bad reviews. What time do the workers come to prep ingredients? Right before it opens? They were not ready at all it seems and seemed to take their time with 8 people in the store already ordered and waiting. I saw three people doing a prep task that could have been done by one person. I've had a lot of different milk teas in my life but none as unique as this Osmanthus Rice Milk Tea. I got it at 30% sweetness, no ice, and it came out within 3 minutes. The drink was perfect - there is crystal boba which is slightly harder than regular brown sugar boba, and I loved the rice topping. We can smell the tea aroma it is there. However, the super cup tea is not tasty at all. The BOBA WAS EXTREMELY UNDERCOOKED. The service is unprofessional. The expectation was not met. Came in to order at register. No greetings and just cold glances many times until one associate came and same thing no greetings and no smiles. Then another associate asked one of my people if we want a bag, we said yes. No further explanation. Got the drinks and ALL SUPER CUP FRUIT TEA WERE IN THE REGULAR CUPS? Then I asked why is it and the associate stated that oh I asked if you want a bag and you said yes so we out them in regular cups. I asked did you explain of switching the super cups to the regular cups when you ask if we want a bag? The associate said oh when you order 3-4 more drinks we will switch to regular cups automatically. What is that explanation? I have to tell them that this is not what super cup was expected to be. Then they switched them, the tea level was less in all 3 cups, so they added more tea. That is why they do not taste balanced at all. After the associate is done. They just put the drinks on the counter and never said a word to us. What kind of service is this. Plus, the cups are leaking all over the lid rim. The boba is not evenly cooked. The store is a bit small but there's ample space for you to hang out with a friend or two; but don't expect anything crazy. For the boba I had, I had Passionfruit Green Tea with Tea Cubes while my friend got the Mango Pomelo Sago drink. I think my drink was made well considering the price. It is about on average 7-8 dollars but you are getting a quality drink. While I can't say much about the other drink, I think Ben Gong's Tea is worth checking out if you are in the area! We topped off with slurpable mochi, tea cubes, and crystal boba. The cheese tea again was 11/10 - so good! The tea cubes and crystal boba were a nice addition. Never had tea cubes, but I think they're my new favorite! I personally liked the slurping mochi because it was novel, but my partner didn't - he said it had a weird "cotton-like" texture, but it simply reminded me of large rice balls in other Asian desserts going up a straw. I love this ben gongs! The drinks have been consistently good the past several times I've been here. The boba is very soft/chewy and sweet. The oolong milk tea is my favorite here because it has a strong roasted nutty flavor. The guanyin is also good here. I've been to the Centreville Ben Gong's before and I never really understood the hype for this place as the boba seemed normal/the usual. However, after coming to the Annandale location, I can see why the hype is real! It wasn't crowded when I was there, which was nighttime on a Sunday. I was also able to get 10% off with a Yelp check in which maybe the hefty $6 small drink a bit more bearable for me. LOL. I got the burnt caramel cheese milk tea, which seemed to be part of a special menu or something they had in the store, not sure. But the drink was so good! There are bits of walnut in it that make it so tasty, with the crunch and nutty flavour. The cheese is also at the top but you can mix it to go with the milk tea. Not sure if I got any caramel flavour but overall it was so tasty and delicious that I didn't mind.
