Would definitely go someplace else. They told me it was transmission and I asked about the clutch as well (manual). Was told in no uncertain terms, not the clutch. Car is old and am at that juncture of deciding if worth it to spend 4K. Decided to do it, and of course, clutch did need to be replaced. At that point, already invested 4 so know it ended being close to 7K. On top of that, the starter broke a day after I got it back. To their credit they did own up to that and paid for the tow. Bottom line, for me, avoid this mechanic. read more

We had initial problems (see original post below) but the owner subsequently called and went out of his way to work with us and resolve the issue. I want pleased with the initial effort, but I will give them props for eventually responding and treating us fairly. --- My son took his Ford Taurus here to diagnose a transmission issue. They recommended a $3,000 fix that not only didn't work, but made the car worse. (They replaced the catalytic converters which didn't solve the issue and the car came back counterintuitively louder). They offered to fix the issue, but kept the car for two weeks and there was no fix when we finally got itback. Their communication was horrible-- they never called with updates when promised and we only got information when we reached out to them to see if anything was ready. They rebuilt a trans for an older Jeep Wrangler of mine and also for an '86 Dodge pickup. Not too many old school tranny shops left. Reasonable prices. Also, you get what you pay for. If the rebuild price is cheap from another shop, be prepared to get it fixed twice. read more

My 2005 Grand Prix was experiencing a first to second slam, not all the time but when I was stuck in traffic. 495 is basically a parking lot every day. Slam...slam...slam....ugh! Second visit to this place was just as good as the first. brought my 2000 Chevy venture van in with a number of problems (motor mounts,Harmonic balancer, rear brakes and drums, tie rod ends and stabilizer bar in front). I brought in my vehicle for a diagnosis from Hi Tech. I was having harsh shifting issues and check engine lights. I dropped my car off first thing in the morning. They warned me that they would not get to it until the next morning as they were busy, which I understood. Come the next day, I did not receive a call back until I called them around 4:30pm, to which they let me know they were about to bring my car in. 45 minutes later, I get the diagnosis (shockingly quick). My vehicle, with less than 80,000mi needed a transmission rebuild. However, the tech on the phone was lying (or clueless). I'm luckily mechanically inclined and know the specific type of transmission in my vehicle. He stated I had a different kind of transmission, which is expensive and finicky, and they said the only to fix it was a full rebuild, and quoted me around $6000. Not sure what I expected for a free diagnosis, but at least figure out the correct transmission in my car if you're going to waste my time! read more

My BMW locked up and had a "transmission malfunction " code. I towed to the dealer for a diagnostic test all they told me was it needed a new transmission with no other explanation or options. A relative referred me to Hi Tech, from the initial call Michael was responsive, and after I advised of issue he explained possible issues. I towed my car and with 1-2 days my car was ready!! I have been to countless shops trying to get my 2004R transmission swap right on my 1969 Camaro. They diagnosed my problem and installed a new valve body, governor, shift kit, and overdrive lockup system. They stayed with me throughout the process and helped me get what I really wanted which was a performance transmission that could handle my engine power, while also being able to be driven daily without beating me up. Love this place. Honest and thorough. Was having problems and was told by my local mechanic to have Hi Tech check my vehicle out. They kept it for a few days, drove it around and ran a couple of tests. It's a 2002 Sequoia with almost 200,000 miles on it. They could've told me anything and it wouldn't have surprised me. But they said no transmission issues found. Told me I should get another 100,000 miles out of this transmission. Turned out to be a dead cell in my 6 month old battery causing problem. Friendly and easy to deal with. These guys resealed my trans on my 34 yr old 560SL a year and two months ago. During a recent service I discovered that the trans was leaking again. Called the shop and they said bring it in and let us look at it. Even though this work only came with a 12 month warranty they went ahead and fixed it no charge. I brought a spare rear differential that was making some noise to Hi-Tech to take a look at. They didn't find anything obviously wrong with it during the inspection and let me know. We went back an forth on several different options ranging from putting it back together as is to a full rebuild. I haven't used the diff since they did the work so i cant say whether the noise is gone but my review is based on the customer service I received. At the end of the day this place genuinely cares about their customers, they will do whatever they can to make sure you're happy. My 2016 Subaru Forester had CVT problems from the start in '16. However FARRISH in Fairfax said, "Oh, that's the inherent qualities of the CVT there's nothing we can do about it, the CVT will adjust to your driving skills". However, the car jumped, bumped and vibrated at various times to no avail. I just accepted it..... Also, just recently the dash lit up with 4 icons one of which was 'flashing'; AT/Oil Temp etc.... thanks to the recommendation of Cherrydale Motors in Arlington, I was referred to Hi-Tech Transmissions who had also rebuilt by 2003 Jeep Wrangler's 5 speed stick in about 2012, also because Cherrydale recommended them. Great experience but hard to part with so much $$$$ Had my car towed from my usual shop (Cherrydale Motors). They recommended Hi-Tech too! It was dropped off by AAA on a Friday night at closing time. Received a call first thing Monday morning that they would check out the car and let me know what the problem was. I already knew it was the transfer case but they wanted to make sure. Wow, they replaced my transmission and now the car shifts like butter! Feels like a new car! It's only been a few days, but I was eager to give a positive review. I'll update if anything changes, but so far so good! They put a rebuilt transmission in my car. Has a 3 year/36k mile warranty on the trans! It wasn't cheap, but you get what you pay for! I wasn't gonna skimp out on such a crucial component! Always change ur transmission fluid ~30k miles was their advice. My old trans died because it was never serviced, never had new fluid. I'm mostly reviewing this based on poor communication. I dropped off my car at 9 am for diagnostics on why my transmission light was on. Never heard a thing until I call back around 4. They said the car was not ready yet? Ready? You didn't even tell me the issue, give an estimate get my authorization. Thankfully it was only a 300 dollar repair so I was just grateful I didn't need a new transmission. Then when I pick up, they ask for payment and give me my key and never share the issue/resolution. I ask and they do tell me. Then when get to my car, it reeks of cigarette smoke. Yuck! read more
