The entertainment was fun, but as I previously explained we had an experience that was frustrating. We had a party of 7 for dinner that was delayed significantly. I believe that customer service is an important part of a dining experience. The employees at Benihana were exceptional. The manager, however, has not. I tried multiple times to reach him and had no reply other than for me to contact the corporate office, which I had already done. There has been no response from corporate either as of this date. There are many restaurants in the Portland area that provide excellent food AND customer service. We will spend our money at those businesses instead of Benihanas. So my wife and I spent $150 anticipating a nice meal at Benihanas. Terrible experience. The fried rice we both paid extra for wasn't fried rice. Huge amount of white rice with a dribble of one egg and a bit of chicken. No taste to it and lots of the rice was hard. My chicken was way overcooked and tough. Benihana was one of the worse restaurants I've ever been to. I came here for the first time and decided to sit in the lounge/sushi bar area and thought it was going to be a nice experience and it was absolutely awful. We did the $39 meal plus add a extra $9 for Filet mignon. And our order was supposed to with three course meals and we were waiting for an hour for our food and it was all cold. Cold steak, cold vegetables, the rice was the only thing warm. Also the place we sat was where you pick up your to go orders. And they were so backed up, they had 3 different drivers trying to pick up the same order and it wasnt even ready yet. Also the workers were slamming dishes and cussing in front us. Very unprofessional I will definitely never come back and I will never spend $105 on cold food, terrible service, and unprofessional environment. read more

Our appetizers came after we were finished with the meal, and were cold and hard. Rice never did come, until after we had talked to the "manager", who had to "talk to his boss" in order to adjust the check. Sadly, we were trying to celebrate our Son's Birthday, and it was a disaster. After the check was presented, we asked about dessert (which was never offered, but included in the meal, according to the menu), and received about a tablespoon of ice cream each. When did ice cream scoops get so small? We went to an ice cream parlor afterwards to get what we had missed. God this place is so terribly run. The ac is terrible so it's like 80 degrees in summer. We arrived early for a 630 reservation, seated at 720. Then we leave at 900 because they are short staffed. I recently visited Benihana and while I'm giving 5 stars, this is only for our chef. Christopher was incredible and made the night fun and entertaining everything tasted amazing . Unfortunately, our service from the servers and hosts was really disappointing. We waited almost the entire meal before we were offered drink refills, and it felt like the staff outside of the kitchen wasn't attentive at all, a little rude if I'm being honest. At a place where the servers are the ones receiving tips and tipping out the chefs, there should be a much higher standard for service. This is a terrible restaurant. Never go there. We had a 5:30 reservation for a birthday dinner for my daughter in law with a party of 8 including a 3 and 5 year old. We were not seated until well after 6:30. Meanwhile we had to stand for over an hour in a very crowded noisy waiting area. Then we were seated, gave our orders and were served soup and salad. After that more than an hour passed with no further service. Two people who claimed to be managers were apologetic but did nothing to get us service. We finally paid for drinks and left, never having received the food we ordered. The restaurant is crowded, noisy and ridiculously overpriced. The food wasn't extraordinary but the ambiance made for a fun experience and I think that's what most people enjoy about the place. I would come back to try some of their other menu items. One of the worst experiences we've ever had at Benihana--and we've been loyal customers for years. From start to finish, the service was unbelievably disappointing. We waited over an hour just to receive our appetizers, and then another 45 minutes before the main course even started arriving. That's nearly two hours of waiting while hungry. Knowing how hectic it can get, we politely asked our waitress for bowls of garlic butter upfront so we wouldn't have to interrupt the chef later. She flat-out refused and insisted the chef would provide it. From past visits, we know some chefs get irritated with requests during cooking, which is why we tried to be proactive. When Chef Rob arrived, we told him how hungry we were after waiting so long. He acted indifferent and cooked at a painfully slow pace. Instead of serving the fried rice right away like most chefs do, he cooked it, set it aside to get cold, and then started on the meats and veggies. By the time the fried rice finally reached our plates, it was dry and unappetizing. We asked him for the garlic butter, and he gave a small amount. When my niece politely asked for more, he gave her a nasty look and made a rude comment, saying he had to "drop everything" just to get it. Completely uncalled for. No guest should be treated like an inconvenience. To make matters worse, our waitress disappeared and never came back to refill drinks. I had to get help from a waitress at another table just to find her. After years of coming here and recommending this place to friends and family, I'm sad to say we won't be returning anytime soon. What a fun place and atmosphere! We had the server Joe who had some of the best dad jokes and did a good job cooking the food. The meat was all cooked really well and very flavorful. Our server was also great and explained things well. Had reservations and got sat pretty quickly. If you don't have a big party you get sat with other small parties. The group we sat with wasn't a lively bunch but appreciated Joe's attempts and getting them having fun. Both the server and the chef asked for any food allergies. Made a reservation for 2pm. We got there, and were seated pretty quickly. Not too long before our orders were taken (there was another family... dad with his son... so between ours and his, 4 kids). We went over to tell the front check-in folks that it's been too long, and they sat there and acted like they'd do something... and we watched as they did nothing and told no one (and if they did, nothing happened)... so wife went over to someone who looked like a manager and told him... and he said he'd "check on what's going on". Funny.... soon someone came out... and the show and food was good. Of course, the people who had ordered something not hibachi had already eaten and were just sitting there being bored, and we had to go chase people down to get their desserts ordered early (they enjoyed the show). Through all this... NO ONE... not our server, not a single manager, no one... came by to check on us (but they did check on the group right next to us to see if everything was ok). NO ONE came over to apologize to either of the families at this cook top for being ignored and abandoned. It's not like they were all busy either... throughout all this, I observed them... the older folks who might have been managers... the older ladies who usually sing the birthday songs, etc... all just meandering around talking to each other about something obviously WAY more important than their customers. Were they short of chefs? The one that cooked for us didn't cook while we were waiting... so can't tell. Are they short staffed? Not from what I saw with people standing around doing who knows what. Was the place so packed it was just hopping? NO... multiple empty cook tops. Thankfully, the chef was good and he did a fine job with the food. But everyone else? You don't belong in hospitality or restaurant service if that's how you do it. Kids will want to go back because they love their fried rice. (again, no dings on the chefs). I hate making this post. I loved Paul's since I was a kid. My daughter loved it there. So for lunch I decided to check it out since it was reopened. I was not impressed. My go to order is the club house with tots. So it is a roasted turkey club with a salad. Thats fine not paying $2.50 extra for fries. The salad was not a salad. The ranch was super salty. The turkey was so dry and like it has been cooked a while ago and warmed up. It was half a tomato with the core in it. I understand changes happen but this was not good. I won't even go into the price of it. I am sad I couldn't finish it. I wish they would had kept some of the classic dishes. What made Paul's special I felt that it was food you could rely on and it felt nice. I did find it strange nothing seems to really be updated inside only the food. After going to hibachi for most special occasions or celebrations for YEARS- this is the first time we could truly say, "we will not be coming here again". We arrived at about 45mins before close & were told there'd be about a 15min wait so we enjoyed some sake at the bar top. We were seated at the expected wait time but waited for almost another 40mins after sitting at the hibachi table to even receive our 1st course of SOUP! The waiter was very kind but pretty much said "Sorry you had a bad time. Unfortunately this is pretty normal around here & it's not my fault". We made a reservation for Father's Day three weeks prior. They sent us two emails asking us to confirm we will be there on time. We showed up at our reservation time and they were 1.5 hours behind on reservations. We were told the restaurant is full and there is simply no capacity to meet the reservations that were made plus the walk-ins accepted. This is one of my favorite go to places. I always order the same entree' (Filet Mignon). During the week this entree' is $26.50. We made the mistake of going on a Saturday. The EXACT SAME menu item is $51.00 on Saturday. Across the board this restaurant is almost doubling the prices on the menu. Their prices posted online do not reflect these OVER inflated prices. Also, every one else's meal came with ice cream, but for some reason the $51 Filet Mignon did not. It sounded refreshing, but also be prepared to spend $6.50 for one scoop of ice cream. I called the restaurant to inquire about this. The resolution manager said agreed the price on the menu is NOT reflected online. She kept explaining away the reason they serve and charge DINNER menu prices on the weekends, even if you go for lunch. When I made the comment this is NOT right when you go in thinking you will pay one price, and basically get STICKER SHOCK when you see the menu. I am 100% certain if they posted the real prices online, people would NOT go eat there. UPDATE: You will receive their "boiler plate" response, with no intentions of follow-through. Finally stopped and tried Benihana- restaurant is very dark inside and loud, but I guess that is part of the table side performance. Clearly stated several times we didn't understand the process/menu and once I asked directly how to order got a very short answer. Lunch for two (5course) option with 1 water and 1 ice tea came to $117 with tip. Chef at the table was struggling food ended up pretty much everywhere. Had to stop and scrape egg shell out of the eggs he was cooking for the fried rice two different times. Soup was very strong, salad was tiny and had way too much dressing on it. Fried rice was ok, and the rest was edible. In the end for my half of the bill I got a chicken breast, 1 slice of zucchini, 1/4 cup of onion and a tsp of mushrooms. Was very disappointed. Dinner from Panda Express x3 would have been a better use of our time and money. Sorry I can't recommend this restaurant. Expensive lesson to learn. read more

We have eaten at Benihana in 7 different states(including Hawaii)usually 10 or more times a year..The food Shane made tonight topped every other time! I really like this place so I thought I would treat myself tonight by getting my dinner delivered. I ordered a shrimp burrito and took a bite and immediately tasted chewy, disgusting steak. It made me so upset because I don't eat steak. My other items were ok. I made reservations four weeks in advance for Christmas Day. My entire party of eight people was there 15 minutes early. So I checked in for my reservation. They found my reservation. They said now you have to wait two hours because we took too many reservations. I was very disappointed. The staff did not care or did not do anything to accommodate.
