June 25 my 3 guests and I sat for dinner in the lounge to celebrate my birthday. I did not alert the restaurant. It was obvious that the Hibachi seating was the priority. For 2 of the guests the seafood selection plate arrived cold and the shrimp were rubber. The service was perfunctory and disinterested. I did not address this to management as I did not want to make my guests uncomfortable. I did however show my displeasure in the tip. I waited to review but recently a friend had a similar experience. To management, those of us selecting to not be seated with loud strangers and their rambunctious children are due the same level of attention. read more

Waiter was nice but everything else was terrible. I asked one manager for help and he just told the waiter to figure it out. Can't make this shit up. Then to end the night they shoved a review card down my throat as if I had a good night. Id kill my moma before I come here again. Please don't come here. horrible from the start we got there at 7:30 the front desk lady said when my party arrived we would be sat so my party was parking they showed up and then there was a guy there that gave me attitude and rolled his eyes ??? he said since we were past 15 min we would have to wait so whatever we waited and we got sat after we got sat the server took our order the drinks came and our appetizers aswell pretty quickly actually so we thought we were gonna eat soon WRONG 8:30 rolls around still no chef and server isn't saying anything 9 comes still no chef and at this point my party was just hungry and we decided to go somewhere else because we were there for a while with no food my friend went to go get the server for the checks and she just ignored her and walked away so she went to get a manager because wtf??? and we got our checks and NOW the server wants to tell us there was a mess up with our order and the chef will be out immediately. we got our checks and paid and the chef still had not come and there were other people at our table too . The food and chef performance were excellent, but the service was extremely slow. Total of 3 hours from reservation time to completion. The worst part though was the service at the bar when we arrived. We were given a buzzer and told to wait in the lobby. We went to the bar and found all seats taken except for handicapped seating at the end. We stood there waiting for the bartender to acknowledge us but he never did. A female employee noticed us standing for over 15 minutes waiting patiently. She said something to the bartender and he replied, they need to order drinks from their table. The female employee went behind the bar and retrieved the two beer bottles and took my payment, which I greatly appreciated. If the bar tender is only going to make drinks for the restaurant tables, they should post a sign rather than just ignoring their guests. read more

My first time ever going to any type of hibachi grill. This is probably the most well-known of the hibachi chains. I know some reviews of this location have been bad, but I certainly didn't see any of that when I went. It was a group of 8 on a Friday night, which is a busy time but we had reservations so there were no issues. It's performance art almost, watching the chef prepare all the food on the grill in front of you, watching the flames fly high in the air. I got the seafood diablo, which thankfully you can order not spicy, and is the best deal if you're looking for a seafood dish. Lots of food and very tasty. Also when you order an entrée, you get a soup, salad, fried rice and veggies included so you really get your money's worth. It's also convenient that you order your dishes separately, not family style, so that makes splitting the check much easier at the end. Maybe other people just went on bad nights, but our experience was great, service wasn't slow, everyone had a good time. I'd recommend going if you've never done it, even better if you can get a group to go. read more

Once we were seated the waitress who was the only saving grace in this situation, took our drink order and food order reasonably promptly, though the drinks took quite a while to come. We then had to wait over an hour for the chef to come to the table. The chefs performance was lackluster and missing some of the key components that make the hibachi experience memorable. The food was fine. Ultimately, I ended up asking to speak to a manager who took zero accountability for any thing and just kept repeating well we told you it would be a 15 minute wait because we're running behind when you checked in at the host stand. This review is regarding the service at the Benihana on Michigan Ave. I can't say much about the food since we ended up not dining there. If I could give zero stars I would. We were in Chicago over the 4th of July weekend and we had an unbelievably disturbing experience at this location. It was quite honestly unexpected and uncalled for the way we were treated. When my group and I arrived, we were immediately approached by one of the staff stating that my husband couldn't dine there with "flip flops" on, we were a bit turned off but didn't mind having him change his shoes since our hotel was right across the street and wouldn't be too much of a hassle for him to change. Things took a turn for the worst as we waited for my husband to return. We were approached a second time by the same staff member who seemed apologetic and almost embarrassed to have to tell us that the manager wouldn't allow the women in the group to dine there either because we weren't wearing closed toe shoes. That's when I knew my Hispanic group was being targeted by the black manager. 1 it's the middle of summer- who isn't wearing sandals, especially while vacationing and 2 there were dozens of other guests at this establishment wearing not only flip flops, sandals/open toe shoes but also sneakers and crocks. I spoke to the manager and said I didn't want anyone else to be turned away for "dress code" but that I couldn't help but notice that the majority of the other guest were wearing similar attire. He then went on to discuss the dress code and I again pointed out how I felt targeted considering there were so many other people with sandals who hadn't been turned away or denied service. He made it seem as though he was going to do me a favor and let the dress code slide. He assured me we weren't being targeted but my observations said otherwise, he said it wasn't a racial thing and said he would "do us a favor" but next time make sure we review the dress code on the website. I was shocked, felt completely disappointed and despite the managers efforts to "fix" the situation the damage had already been done. I didn't feel comfortable enough to dine there after his deplorable treatment. I would like to add that I made a reservation via yelp and the dress code he spoke about was very vague. While in town for the weekend we wanted to do something fun for our granddaughters birthday. The first downfall was the location, it's very hard to find as it's located underneath businesses. The server was nice but slow, the food was mediocre. The chef was not as entertaining as other hibachi establishments we've visited, he did not speak to us or pop raw veggies in our mouth, no saki from squirt bottles . I've been coming to Benihana's for a long time, i've been to Benihana in several different cities in the U.S. I must say, the one in Chicago was probably my worst experience out of all of them. I came inside around lunch time, as I was headed to Tilt Chicago and the Signature room as it's next door and the quality of the food and service wasn't the same. The drink me & my girlfriend shared as it was a $44 fish bowl ( made to share) and it was mediocre quality. Not to mention her or myself don't drink often, and we were expecting to at least get a little buzz from that huge drink, only to figure out it was packed with mostly simple syrup and triple sec. No knock to Benihana as a whole, as i've been so many times and have had amazing experiences. Maybe the one in Chicago isn't it.
