Where do I start? We're visiting from LA and decided to have lunch at Benihana. We got the best greeting from Gary and the service stayed top tier from there! Joseph was our server and he was amazing! He gave great food recommendations and he did not miss! The shrimp tempura was amazing along with everything else we ordered! Brought my boyfriend here for his 33rd birthday, it was our 1st time here. Our reservation was for 7pm but we wasn't seated until 745pm. The cook didn't come over to our table til about 820. The food was delicious. The soup/broth that was given to us 1st was very good as well as the little salad. The cook was awesome with his performance. We ordered the noodles with our meal and everyone else had fried rice. He had a little extra rice that he let my boyfriend and I try and it was so good. I went here on a Wednesday evening at 6 pm. By the time our soup and salad was served, it was already 6:45. By the time the chef arrived at our table, it was 7:30. A family with two small children at our table left at 7:00 because it was obvious it was going to take forever to get their food and the kids were getting restless/sleepy. Both the chef and food were great, but this location is clearly mismanaged. We didn't finally get out of there until well after 8:30, and on my way out the lobby was PACKED. Management clearly took too many reservations. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants to visit for special occasions. Not any longer! I submitted constructive feedback to their corporate site and received no response whatsoever. read more

Mediocre tasting food that's way overpriced. I ordered a chicken yakisoba for a late-night dinner option, as there aren't many places open near the John Hancock Center late in the evening, and so I decided to venture to Benihana, which is typically a solid choice. The yakisoba was oddly very sweet, and the shrimp appetizer was merely comprised of three little shrimp that barely filled the portion of the container in which it was placed. There was also this strange chemical-like flavor in my salad dressing, which I didn't expect at all. The soup was fine, but I didn't get the hot green tea that the meal is supposed to come with. Definitely find a better place to spend your money at, as it isn't authentic nor good Japanese-style food anyways. read more

I was hoping to finally try out this restaurant. We were celebrating a friends birthday and made a reservation for 9pm. Showed up at 9:01 and were told it would be a short wait. Absolutely no issue as this is common at most restaurant. Seeing as the entire seating area indoors was occupied, my friends, wife & i sat outdoors in the chicago evening breeze. Enduring the winter, we waited for 30 minutes with no buzz from the buzzer, no information provided to us and no water offered by the servers or any form of accommodation. After 35 minutes exactly we went inside to ask the servers how much longer- we were told shortly we will be sat. 45 minutes later this was still the case. We eventually left and ate at the next door restaurant. This was not the most pleasant experience and seeing as there was a reservation, It was a bit embarrassing to provide excuses for a birthday celebration. Maybe we'll get to try this restaurant another day but tonight was not the night. I have heard the food is good but i guess we will never know but my experience tonight was sub-par read more

important notes: slow, expensive, bad parking, good food, bad server/service SO FREAKING SLOW!! we had our reservation for 7:30, but we left there at 10:15. it took 15 mins for us to get a table, 20 min to get drinks, another 20 for soup, then salad short after. no water refills either. our server came over only 2 or 3 times to ask how we were doing or if we needed something. finally, it took AN HOUR AND 45 MINUTES JUST FOR THE CHEF. the table that sat down after us got a chef before we could. the food was good and we had a nice chef, Berna. but even after we were done, it took about half an hour to get the check, which was $250 for 4 people!!! Been a loyal patron for well over 10yrs even during the hiatus when they changed location from the city for some time. The service was SO TERRIBLE tonight that this review couldn't wait! With absolute respect to our cook who was excellent, and did his job along with demands that were not his responsibility...HE ROCKED AND PERFORMED WELL UNDER PRESSURE AND WITHOUT SUPPORT FROM STAFF. I believe the other young man's name is Alex....Alex was no help! Was NEVER available, didn't perform ANY of his duties, provide water, assistance, utensils, or drinks; we didn't even get our salad until the end of dinner...ONLY because I notified the manager (he seemed to not care too much and have no control over his staff because I had to notify him more than once about our table's lack of service/acknowledgment). I've NEVER experienced service this egregious before, and have no plans to return. I do, however, intend on contacting corporate because upon leaving, we waited once again FOREVER to pay our bill...we proceeded to leave our table, and walked past our "waiter" who was bad-mouthing the entire table for complaining about his absence and lack of service/professionalism....only then did he notice our presence and ask that we pay when HE didn't bother to come to our table. Mind you, we were there from about 7:30-after to 10:40 due to a lack of service/support staff. Lastly, we were celebrating a 21st birthday and anniversary that was stated upon seating but never acknowledged like the other tables celebrating special occasions. We felt so beyond slighted and disregarded especially considering the amount our tables bill was as a collective.....my advice is DO BETTER WITH HIRING I inserted pics to show....lack of service....and the miso soup bowl was dirty on the outside and they had no green tea ice-cream and he initially came to our table with a dirty tray in tow, not prepared to take any orders.....UNACCEPTABLE read more

So let me try to constructively deconstruct my experiences here at Benihana. I've been there three different times and one thing I can say is that every single time I had fairly good wait service. Two different times my waitress was named Emily (purple hair) and she was incredible. Very sweet and very professional. That being said, Other than the creative ideas of how they stage their food, it's not that good. Over and over again the rice is just absolutely tasteless. Even on my last visit, I PLEADED the chef Alberto to add more chicken and spice to my fried rice. Other people at the table did the same thing. He simply said "Don't worry I know what I'm doing." Unfortunately he didn't. The chicken was bare, The rice was semi cooked, and the portions were pretty small. So all in all I will say this: There's staff, other than Alberto, is pretty good but, their food is terrible!! I would not waste my time going to this place again. That's just me though read more

I remember going here as a kid. But this experience was nothing like I remember. The first thing that was off putting was that they sat too many people at each table (10-13). The second was that they took way too long to get our food...an hour. I was not the only one that thought this was too long. They said its because they are short staffed. The third thing is that they automatically charge a 22% tip to the bill...not the standard 18%. Finally, we smelled so bad coming out of that place that I had to wash my clothes as soon as we got home. The memory was better than the reality. read more

Great experience with James as our server. He was attentive but not bothersome. We came to celebrate, and the place is a great ambiance - lively yet not crazy. The food was delicious, and I loved that they prepare it in front of you, as I've never been to this style of restaurant before. The sangria is great, and I got the entree with scallops. It sucks to go hungry because of terrible service and poor management. But there is something satisfying about getting up and leaving as an entire seated table because we weren't going to pay good money to be treated so poorly. 7pm reservation and finally seated at 7:45. Drink orders taken after a good 15 minutes of being seated with no recognition from anybody. When drinks finally come out 20-25 minutes later the server set them down near us and proceeded to go to a different table and take their orders. By 8:40 we still hadn't seen a chef, still hadn't gotten ordered appetizers and there was no sign of it getting better so our two different groups at the table agreed that it was time to leave. Loved the waiter encouraging us to settle up with management (who we had talked to earlier) on the way out. Look, I get it. Finding help in the service industry is tough these days and there are a lot of unrealistic and rude customers. All we were asking for was some explanation of what was taking so long and some acknowledgment. That's not too much to ask. Sadly, there's probably no reason for anybody there to care because there was still a full waiting room of hungry people ready to sit down and take our places.
