I am upset with Benihana downtown Michigan Ave location...This is expensive Hibachi with slow service! Reservations was for 7:30, but we were not seated until well after that! Our cook didn't show until 9pm, but we were celebrating a kids bday party and they were stuck on Hibachi this place charges for everything, rice, noodles etc!!!!!I guess it's my fault for expecting an experience like other Hibachi grills where you get more. I feel that you are truly paying for the name and their prices for kids meal are unacceptable especially when they get a spoon full of corn and a spatula of rice and chicken.... read more

I probably had the worst Benihana experience I've ever had this past weekend. It started off alright. It was pretty busy & we sat down right at the time of our reservation but this is where things took a turn. Our server took quite some time to take care of us. Once he came by he took our drink orders along with food orders. Before drinks and soups and salads came to the table, the chef was already there. Finally our server appeared with waters, not even our drinks. All the waters had lemons in them & pretty much everyone at the table took them out or sent back their waters. (We we're sitting with strangers). The sake we ordered didn't come out till after our dinner which is pretty ridiculous. We had actually already went to the bar ourselves to go get one. We also had to get up and ask our server for our sauces for dinner. This is a very popular location due to the fact that it is underneath the 360 tower so I expected a way better experience. read more

What has happened to Benihana'a ? I remember it being a great experience and tasty food. We ate there last week and it was a giant disappointment ! Food was tasteless, bland, all of it. the soup was thin with a very few slices of mushrooms, the fried rice and vegetables were as bland as possible and the shrimp, lobster, chicken was without any flavor at all. The wait at the teppanyaki grill was inexplicably long. We had our soup and salad then waited almost 90 more minutes for the chef. I spoke with the manager about our experience and he basically said, "there is nothing I can do". I was so disappointed, I followed up with the corporate office. Very pleased that Benihana takes every review seriously. Someone from the corporate office reached out immediately to talk about the our experience and to offer an apology for the long wait. Thank you Benihana! Not every experience is going to be perfect. It is good to know that you care about your customers and are willing to follow-up. read more

Good: Seated quickly, good show Bad: Slow service, very expensive Overall: To expensive to justify the service and sub-par food. I was visiting from our of town and had this location recommended by an ambassador when I asked for a recommendation for sushi. I was seated more quickly than told. This was appreciated as my daughter was tired. The staff were friendly, but not terribly attentive. The show was on par when compared to dozens of other experiences. It is entertaining and about what I would expect. The service was unimpressive. I waited for refills often and I was forgotten on more than one occasion when I was told a refill was coming. My hibachi meal cost $30 and the overall cost exceeded $100 for my daughter (child's meal) and myself. In fairness to the restaurant, my daughter ordered a smoothie, that she didn't like, and a California roll. I did not mention that she didn't like her smoothie and they didn't ask. I don't think they were obligated to do so, but they did ask another adult in another party about a half consumed alcoholic drink. I don't think this is a good option given the cost and the disappointing food. It may be that this is better for someone else's taste, but I don't believe this to be likely. I've had hibachi frequently and this was not up to to the standard I've grown accustomed to. read more

Came here for lunch with family who were in town. This place is not the spot for hibachi in this city. The chicken was dry and rest of the meal: soup, rice, & sauces were just bland. DO NOT GO HERE. Had a reservation for 7:30PM for 4 on Saturday night. We arrive at the restaurant and it's packed - it's completely disorganized and there's multiple groups of young teens yelling and cussing by the host stand, and Management doesn't ask them to move or to quiet down. After we checked in, we waited ONE HOUR after our reservation to be seated. There were walk ins who they told an hour and 15 minutes. Isn't the point of a reservation not having to wait??? The food & our chef was good, no complaints there, but the rest of the service was not great. We had 2 other couples at our table celebrating anniversaries and birthday, but one couple who had a thousand restrictions (allergic to seafood, doesn't like vegetable this, etc.) which is fine, but instead of just making their entree separately in the back, we had to wait for our seafood entrees and shrimp apps till the end of the meal. Then we waited 20 minutes after we finished eating to get the check while they got ice cream for their celebrations and sang. Then they finally bring the electronic checks and ask how we want it split - we ask to split between us four. 20 minutes later, while at this point EVERYONE ELSE AT OUR TABLE HAS LEFT, we got our individual checks. I didn't know splitting the check apparently takes ANOTHER 20 minutes. After 40 minutes of waiting for the check after finishing our food, we were exhausted. No apologies for the wait (at the restaurant for 3+hours), the bathrooms and surrounding areas were disgusting, and for a $50/minimum meal experience, I was not impressed. read more

Last night, for a family birthday. was the best visit we have ever had at the Chicago-Benihana! The management and service team were spot on! Seated and ordered within a half hour after our reservation time (only becuz we waited for the rest of our large group to park). The Chef Ardis was absolutely amazing, the food was awesome, no complaints! Great work by this team on staff last night. Busiest time was after the 8 pm hour-lots of bigger parties, it was a Saturday and to be expected. We will, of course, return in the future for these types of events. I'm not sure if I've ever left a one star review for anything but our meal there was borderline traumatic (jk). I've grown up around these restaurants but I've never been to one, but I was well aware of exactly what kind of restaurant is in what they do. We thought it would be fun to try something different. So a group of us got together and thought we'd try it out. What could go wrong with Asian food? The first thing you noticed when you walk in is the smell. If you can walk in the lobby which is 50 feet from the actual cooking, and understand that the smell is going to permeate your body from just the waiting area, we should've walked out right then. Do not wear anything value to this restaurant. You will have to burn it. The other issue is Service. Wild the chefs who do your cooking at the table are super fun and get the assignment, the rest of the staff seems completely ill equipped. The bartender was dismissive, overworked, and downright bitter. Our waiter at the table, you could tell from his face and his demeanor that he just hated his job. But also he's just not good at it. Who comes over and takes a drink order and then literally never comes back to follow up with any drink order requests afterwards? That's where you make your money. The food. The actual food that was made on the grill top was fine. Pretty standard Japanese food. Lots of fun and Flare if you've never done it before. But where you make the mistake is ordering anything else on the menu. We ordered three different appetizers and all three of them never came. We had to flag down the waiter who again never came back for a drink order, to find out where our appetizers were. The mysteriously came right away and when I said they were cold, I mean they almost felt like they were in a refrigerator. All three of the appetizers had been sitting somewhere in the restaurant lost, not under heat lamp. All inedible. To his defense, he immediately said I will have them taken off of your bill without even arguing or making excuses. But still it was pretty much ruined by then. Overall, we ended up spending almost $100 per person on something that was just above panda express. And that's not even counting the dry cleaning bills. If you if you have kids and you're introducing them to Japanese cooking outside of sushi, this is fun for the little ones but for anybody else, I'm not sure what you're going for. read more

This Benihana is a s*** show to say the least. We had a reservation for 6:45 and was told to wait until 7:40 to be seated. When we asked the host what is taking so long when we had a reservation, this is what he said: "I reservation doesn't mean that you will be seated at that time.. it just means that you will get a chance to sit down at some point, but it could be a while." The night ended well after two large bottles of sake, but the food was not the same. The spicy chicken was dry, and the chef forgot to add the green onions. The fried rice was good, but not worth $5 extra per bowl good. We tipped the usually 22% (our lucky number) because the chef tried his best. But overall, it was not a great experience. Yikes! Believe the bad reviews...it's all true. Service is really not good anymore. We went here with our three kids who were excited for the experience. Do not waste your time here. The food is good but not worth the service you get. Had to wait over 10 minutes just to get water or even see a waiter. We had to pay for our food and wine on separate bills. We paid for our food and then our waiter couldn't figure out how to charge us for the wine. He disappeared for 20 minutes and we had to search down the staff to try to pay. I ended up just giving them cash because they couldn't figure out how to let us pay with a card.
