[[HIGHLIGHT]]There's a downstairs seating that's more dive/sports bar-y with a TV, and an upstairs area with a nicer view and more restaurant vibes.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]No AC in the summer in the downstairs part.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Got the seafood platter, but the shrimp still had the poop chute in it and the mussels were unpleasant. The scallops and fish part were good. Clam chowder was way too salty and watery with a hint of sour aftertaste. Entrees are expensive given the price which is unsurprising for Newport but you can get better seafood for the same price elsewhere. Service was good but a little long.
$1.50 HH 12-2 pm. Pic, the Bartender very friendly and gave us tips on where to go. We ordered a hot lobster roll-a little smaller than I expected for $27.95 but It was tasty and we had the fries with malt vinegar. Also ordered a dozen oysters. Sat at the bar in front of the oyster bar. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Noise level was normal.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
We saw this place while we shopped and decided to come back for dinner and honestly it did not disappoint. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Downstairs is a little louder and has more of a bar feel while upstairs is a restaurant feel.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When we ordered, we were greeted by a very nice waiter who took our orders. We got the New England clam chowder and Raw Oysters to start with a side of garlic bread. No words can describe how good it was. For dinner, we ordered the hot lobster roll and muscles zuppa style. Overall delicious and fresh. Costs were reasonable and I will return.
We were looking for light eats and drinks. We were with my cousin who knew the area - walked into Benjamin's around 4:30. We didn't have a reservation but they had a four top that was perfect for our party of 3. Lauren was quick to bring us water and then take our drink order. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Lots of Newport vibes here with nautical themes, Fenway Park signs, lots of Christmas decor. Lots of music, spots on the tv[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. We loved the food! The calamari app $15 had perfectly fried rings and no tentacles. Yummy marinara served with the calamari. The oysters were shucked well - no shell fragments and all the oysters were freed from the shell. Clams casino are warm and delicious with toasted breadcrumbs. $1.50 each for both oysters and casino. Lauren kept our group happy!
Upstairs at Benjamin's did not disappoint! We made a reservation ahead of time and got right in at our time. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The dining room was cozy and reminded me of the seafood places we grew up with.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They had kids menus ready for ours which is great (some restaurants in Newport aren't so child friendly).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff worked together to get us what we needed and pre-bus the table in time for our food to come out. We started with the Oysters Rockefeller- one of my faves! I went with a lobster roll with a salad instead of fries and coleslaw. That slaw was some of the BEST I've ever had! The hot lobster roll was good but a little fishy- maybe it needed more butter? The platters were all huge- someone in our group had the stuffed lobster- presentation was beautiful. We will be back!
Avoid this place and try another spot. I was actually going to the place next store but stopped here due to their menu and raw bar. Staff is ok.... We were sat fast and then forgotten about. Two other tables came in after us and ordered before us. I finally got my oysters.... They were ok. The food was finally ordered about 45 minutes later. I went with the 1 lb lobster with a side of clam chowder. Clam chowder was barely warm and probably the worst I have ever had. Now, let's get to the real reason for the 1 star. You served me a bad lobster it smelled of ammonia when it arrived and I knew it was bad but I did not want to make a scene. I regret that. I paid and we left. Avoid the hell out of a place were they do not care enough to do the right thing and serve you bad seafood.
Good service, good food. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We sat on the table by the window and it was very refreshing without being bothered by passing people or cars.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I had the fisherman platter and my husband got a burger. All good, we will be back.
Love their happy hour/lunch specials! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Looking for a place to sit and relax and eat fresh oysters and clams? This is your place!![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We got a big plate of oysters and clams and very large shrimp! Also got some Rockefeller cooked oysters and a garlic bread to balance things out. We had a good time with all the food. Raw items were super fresh, the shrimp were nice and big, and the cooked items had good flavor. Yes they had a full menu of other items, but we didn't really look at that. There is a nice bar with good drinks and beers. Our waiter was good too - helpful and funny. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a great place to stop midday for a fun, fresh lunch![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]
3.5/5 Great spot for oyster happy hour with strong drinks (the margarita packs a punch, and the Newport Sunset is a nice balance). Service was excellent and really made the visit. Food was more hit-or-miss: the fried shrimp were good and tasted super fresh, but the seafood pot pie had overcooked shrimp with the tails still on, which made it tricky to eat. Didn't love the little neck clams. Limited street parking, but the ocean view and the quirky Grand Marnier Club wall of bottles give the place a fun, local charm.
My wife and I were in Newport for a mini vacation. We had been here one time in the past and thought it was good. So we decided to return . Bad idea. We started with the island punch, which was actually very good. That's where the highlights end. We then moved onto the lobster bisque. This can best be described as tomato soup with no lobster flavor. To start, the color was a dark murky brown. Unlike any lobster bisque I have ever seen. If I was blindfolded and asked to name what I was eating, lobster bisque would not be my guess. On to the entrees. My wife had the Stuffed Sole. It was supposed to have a cream Sherry sauce stuffed with lobster , scallops and shrimp. None of these items were evident in the dish. In fact, the sherry sauce turned out to be nothing more than retreaded lobster bisque. I had the shrimp scampi with linguine. This dish is quite puzzling. The best way I can describe this is shrimp cocktail over linguine and a bowl of flavorless soup covered with mozzarella cheese. You heard right ,mozzarella cheese. In what world does mozzarella cheese go on shrimp scampi? This establishment clearly does not have a chef. There is no cooking acumen whatsoever contained in the slop they are serving. My wife ate 2 packages of oyster crackers and considered that the highlight of the meal. On a positive note, our sever Connor was Excellent. He was very apologetic and arranged for my dinner as well as 1 Bisque to be deducted from the Check since they were barely touched. Unfortunately we will be crossing Benjamin's off our list. I suggest you do the same.
Haven't been to Benjamin's in 2 years, and it's still the same. The bartender, Andrew, was great. [[HIGHLIGHT]]We came on a raw bar Tuesday night, and it wasn't busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We enjoyed the oyster Rockefeller, Benjamin's linguine, and ribeye steak. Coming back soon.
I can't say enough about the seafood here. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Pretty small seating area inside but we were lucky to get seated right away.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Very nice servers too. They were very busy but the servers were hustling and kept up. Our order was correct, hot, and delicious. We had Oysters Rockefeller, Clams Casino, and steamers. Spot on excellent!
Best raw seafood spot ever. I eat a lot of raw seafood. Their Oysters and Clams are the best half shells you will ever eat!!!

I've been here a few times over the years, and it has never disappointed. Busy or not, the servers and energetic and attentive. The vibe is classic New England coast, with the dark wood interior and seafaring decor. We went mostly turf instead of surf this time. My wife had the jerk chicken caesar salad, and I had the French dip au jus sandwich. The only seafood we ordered was a cup of clam chowder, which did not disappoint. Portions are more than adequate, and everything was delicious. I saw a nameless $1.50 fee on our bill, not sure what that was about. Definitely worth stopping in, I'm confident you will enjoy it. I have come back every single time I'm in Newport, and will continue to do so! read more
We always make a point to visit Benjamins when in town because of the lively atmosphere. Today it did not disappoint! I ordered the lobster quesadilla appetizer and hubby ordered the shrimp po boy and was very pleased. The quesadilla had chunks of lobster and came with pico, sour cream and salsa for dipping. All options were good. The shrimp po boy had plenty of shrimp and the roll held it all together very well. We will definitely return again. Our waitress was quick to serve us and handled all customers with a smile. The service was top notch! Try Benjamin's anytime you are nearby. You won't be disappointed! read more
For all you travelers. Just letting you know when they are closed Wednesdays. That said let's get right into it. This is a very popular place to eat in town. The have a bar area that's down stairs seating. But also you can walk upstairs for seating up there. The food here is amazing. Its very rare to catch this place empty. So plan accordingly. Steve is an amazing bar tender and does the shucking.. he is very quick. And if your at the bar its like a nice little show. The menu from lunch to dinner is excellent. From lobster mack and cheese to prime rib or something simple like frog legs. The staff here is pretty consistent. I have been coming over 5 years now and still see the same people here which is nice because after awhile they get to know who you are which is nice. Makes it a resturant home away from home. So if you like good food fast service and a good time come and check it out. read more

I'm back a year later for the Oysters ! They ste are so fresh, oysters Rockefeller are so well done so rich in flavor, the name suits it well! Best I ever had! There a Grand marnier club where you purchase a bottle for $100 /bottle n they will number the bottle n keep it for you. Great place! I hope it won't take me a year to come back! read more

Our early dinner at Benjamin's was sadly disappointing overall. Nothing was spectacular but a few items were pretty good. Meal highlights included the clam chowder (4/5; solid flavor, a bit lemony, and pretty fresh), calamari (3.75/5; decently fried but the cocktail sauce was weirdly sweet, fried jalapeños were a nice touch), stuffed rock sole (4/5; nicely balanced with the rice and grilled asparagus, the seafood stuffing was made with fresh shrimp and scallops), oh no mimosas (4.5/5; super tasty (string) version of a mimosa). Now to the low lights: fisherman's platter (2/5; fried oysters, shrimp, scallops and fish...the breading was too heavy, fish didn't taste fresh, cocktail sauce was weird) and fries (2/5; they tasted worst than what you would find in the frozen section of the grocery store). Overall, it wasn't a very satisfying meal but the service was pretty good. read more

Perfect spot if you're looking to get your New England Lobster roll fix. Of course all the seafood is delicious, so you're in luck no matter what craving needs satisfying. Located on the famed Thames street and easy to find, we stopped in for some good eats after getting some shopping in. Note that metered parking is available and seemed plentiful. We snagged the last table located downstairs not realizing the upstairs portion was more spacious so do note that additional seating is available. We probably would have preferred the spaciousness and serene atmosphere of the upstairs but still enjoyed nonetheless. The downstairs was quite boisterous given the bar and packed tables. But the food hit the spot so we weren't sweating the seating arrangements. Our server was pleasant and got us served with drinks and apps quickly. We started with some New England Clam Chowder and a crab cake to share. Both were excellent. The soup was creamy and packed with clams and potato. A cup is your best bet if you are making an appetizer of it. Very hearty and fast filling. Same can be said of the crab cake! Served with a lovely aioli and roasted peppers. Noticeably full of crab meat and not overbearing on filler. And because I'm in New England, I of course ordered Lobstah Roll for dinner and was left completely stuffed and satisfied. The roll was bursting at the seams with lobster meat just how it should. Extremely fresh and served with ample fries and coleslaw. Honestly exceeded my expectations in terms of taste and size. Great deal at a $26 price point! Hard to beat. Definitely recommend Benjamin's! Great bar, atmosphere, and service with delicious food. read more

Another Newport institution. I love this place and let me tell you why. Location: Located on the main drag on Thames Street, you're gonna pass this place over and over if doing a Newport stroll/shopping day. It's a bright red two-story building that looks like it might be structurally unsound. Happy Hour: This is where the money is and their claim to fame. They know it. 80% of the patrons sitting at the bar tucked in with an insane amount of raw food know it. The other 20% stumbled in and ordered wrong and don't get why it's so crowded but I can only take on so many other people's problems and this is not one of them. If you look at everyone's orders as you are escorted to your table and go with the chicken parm, that's on you. Happy hour runs from 12-2 every day except Wednesday (they are closed). The deal is $1.50 oysters and $1.25 clams. If you don't get there early, you'll probably be out of luck. On Tuesday, they have HH prices all day and also add shrimp cocktail, oysters rockefeller, and claims casino into the mix. Can only speak to the oysters for HH but they are super fresh, locally caught, and well shucked with all the accoutrements. Wish they had more than one variety but it's all good given the foregoing....and they aren't Blue Point thank goodness. Since the move here is to gorge yourself on oysters, have only tried a few regular menu items. There is usually a lobster and chowder special for around $39, which is a really good deal. The lobster is always fresh, a good size, and steaming hot. The chowder is average by Newport standards but a nice addition. The prime rib special seems like a questionable order but is consistently really good. Promise. Will say that the krinkle cut fries- which seem to come with half the platters- always look bad and the lobster roll I have tried was just okay. Better options elsewhere for those. Service is consistently attentive and friendly on the ground level. Second floor consistently less so. It does take a bit for the food to come on either level regardless but they are always super busy so not really a service issue. Bathroom situation is less than ideal. If you are sitting downstairs, you have to leave the restaurant, go up exterior stairs, and make your way up to the second floor to find two very cramped stalls. But bathrooms in Newport are generally terrible so fine. At least they have some. Also very kid friendly, especially on the second floor. In summary, Benjamin's gives old-school vibes and a good, reasonably-priced meal without pretense. Would recommend this place without hesitation to my suburban bff and her family of five, my snobby nyc friends, and my mother. Casts a wide net. 4.5 if I could. read more

I brought out-of-towners to this restaurant on the day before Halloween. I could not find a restaurant in Newport close to the water, that was open on a Monday, for some reason. The lady who took my phone call convinced me that the food on this restaurant is good, especially the seafood, and it would be a great showcase place for tourists, so I took a chance and booked a reservation for 5 people. Good location as it is right across the Newport Visitor Center and right on Thames St. Our reservation was for 5PM but we arrived 10 minutes early. Thames was not busy and we parked our two cars right in front the restaurant. When we left, we discovered, to our dismay, that we had parking tickets--we failed to see the sign that was at the entrance to Thames. Bummer. What a ridiculous fine; we are right in front of the restaurant and the parking was clearly not busy--but I digress. Back to food. Seafood it is. We ordered calamari for appetizers. For entrees, hot lobster roll, Halibut, Benjamin's Linguini, and Striped Bass. My guests and I were unimpressed. The serving size was good but the lobster was chewy and the linguini was swimming in a lot of sauce (soupy!). The service was good. I felt that having lunch there would've been better. read more

Went for the second time for the happy hour Tuesday special! $1.50 oysters! Can't beat the price or the quality. This time sat at the bar and had a great conversation with the oyster shucker. A bit crowded for lunch, but definitely worth the wait times! read more

Came in for the second time today and left super disappointed. Got the fattiest roast beef sandwich I've ever eaten. Picked off nearly a third of it because it was gross. We asked for 16 oysters and they gave us 18. Didn't notice until we finished eating but we were also charged for 18. Then we got crab cakes and oysters, BOTH of which were billed for more than is listed on the menu. It's not a huge deal but when you go somewhere, it's bizarre to be charged for more than the menu listed. Noticed in the car ride home or I would have complained. The first time we ate here, one of our group chipped an actual tooth on a piece of broken shell inside of a muscle. Had to go have the tooth repaired. That's a true story. We shrugged it off. Now this experience has really put us off of here. And being charged more than the menu price has soured me enough to write this review. There are so many great restaurants around, I'd pick somewhere else. read more

Come on a Tuesday night for special raw bar deals and an early bird special before 7 pm. We had the most amazing server who really took care of us. The Manhattan was PERFECT and the food was delicious. Highly recommend this place! read more
Newport can get really busy, so we were happy to find this spot to eat at! My boyfriend and I split the Coconut Shrimp as an appetizer and I got Benjamin's Linguini and he got the Stuffed Lobster with a side of French Fries. The linguini was very good--the pasta was slightly over Al Dente (Al Dente is my preference), but I know this isn't an Italian restaurant, so I wasn't expecting it to be the perfect Al Dente. The seafood was in a white wine sauce, which I always enjoy! I tried a few French Fries and they were really solid! Perfect crunch on the outside and soft on the inside. They also had the perfect amount of salt. The restaurant had a nautical theme (which I always enjoy in Newport) but I especially liked the Parrots in the stained glass windows and the way the light was shining through them--it really caught my eye! If you're looking for a place to eat in Newport, Benjamin's was solid! read more

Good was awful Prices high Added a cvc fee???? Well worst meal in Newport.... Had excellent 5 star meal night before at 22B... Benjamins can not employ a real chef after this mess... lobster bisgue 1.2 size I had at Red Parrott and 5 bucks more...the bisque served here was cold, tasted like Cambells canned tomato soup with oil tastes... no lobster taste or meat... completely wasted 12.95 bucks on this ... then gives me a pre packaged bag of chowder crackers ... chef a joke serving this Then sea bass dinner special sounded decent... Sea bass overcooked , no flavors, spices, underneath the mess was these reheated diner breakfast hash brown dry cubed potatoes, 2 little pieces spinach in gross cheese sauce and not enough of either... chef again... no culinary skills here and was 31.95. Can of beer 9 bucks and at least chef didn't touch this as canned . Then they add a s/c conv fee of 1.89? Not charged at my other dining places that week? I called later to ask about charge and was told that a credit fee charge ... why on receipt when not known at receipt printing I was paying cash? Misleading... Waste of money, but worse... I wanted a nice quality meal... my dinner meal on vacation was ruined... I'll never return...ate there in past visits and was always acceptable... if as owner ... food quality, presentation, chef abilities all important if expecting prices to be there... The stuffed clams and coconut shrimp someone next to me ordered looked Red Lobster chain type quality... the guys cup of chowder looked no flavors but he did get a spoon full of potatoes, a piece of clams... again looked that it came out of a can and added some fresh clam pieces? A lot of other great restaurants in Newport and I see no reason to return. Bar stools need 2 inches cut off or remove rail my knees kept hitting trying to sip the ice cold lobster bisque... ie... After a disappointing dinner at a nearby food place by the wharf the night before, we have to look for another place to make us feel better and we exactly knew which one is that. Came Benjamin's. We've been here numerous times and it is always a pleasure to dine in here. This time we are having clam chowder, lobster salad roll sandwich, a linguine, garlic butter bread and chicken tenders and fries for the kids. I always find Benjamin's chowder perfectly aligned with my palate. Not too salty, right creamy and they didnt go cheap on the ingredients. When in New England my mind automatically look for anything that has lobster meat. I am in the mood this time for a lobster roll or similar to it and opted in for the sandwich. I love the way the bread is toasted and lobster salad tastes really good! The linguine is so good. The mussels, a couple of clams, calamari, shrimp and scallops in garlicky white sauce with linguine pasta is a very good combination. I have to steal... I mean try my kid's food as well... its an upgrade kids meal and for my daughter who loves bread she find Benjamin's version tasty. Having a recent cycling injury means climbing the stairs a bit challenge for me. The ambiance here has always been nice. The wall has infos about yatching club and historic races. The decor is well suited. Overall for this specific visit, I give it a five star. Very good food, attentive staffs, and it cost a little bit more than the other but I think it is all worth it. The place is in a great spot location wise. Really centrally located. There's three floors to it- the top floor being a small outdoor bar space with a few table tops. We sat out there. Our server was a very nice young guy who took care of us while also taking care of other tables and a large group that came up as well. He handled it all well. Calamari was good and fish tacos were delicious. My ceasar salad wasn't good however. Soaked in dressing and very wilted and lots of brown lettuce. But overall a cute spot. read more

I visited Benjamin's today for lunch. It was pretty slow when we arrived - so our service was fast and our server was prompt. The restaurant itself is very nautical - my friend and I sat on the top floor where there was a nice view of Thames Street. They have a daily oyster Happy Hour from 12 PM - 2 PM, where oysters are $1.50 each. My friend and I ordered two dozen. Super delicious and sweet! We also both ordered the New England Clam Chowder to start off. I thought it was okay. More water than broth. For entrees, I ordered Benjamin's Linguini and my friend ordered the Hot Lobster roll. The linguini was good - but there was TOO much broth. However, there were good amounts of seafood in it. The lobster roll was good. I think Benjamin's has a lot of different options for seafood dishes, so it is definitely worth a visit. Location is also convenient as well. I can see why it is a local favorite. read more

We popped into Benjamins to get a quick bite. The clam chowder was good, the garlic bread was excellent, and the nachos were good. I didn't try the calamari because the texture seemed weird. Regardless, it was a good place for a quick bite. The service was terrific, and Emma was a complete doll. She was so attentive and friendly. Her attitude was positive, and I couldn't say enough good things about her--cute little pud/restaurant in the local area. read more
