. A Fourth of July Legend: Benny's Clam Shack Let me set the scene: It's the Fourth of July. The sun is setting over the coast of Rhode Island. We've just stepped off the Block Island ferry--sun-kissed, hungry, and on a mission for one thing: a hot dog worthy of America's birthday. But everything's closed. Doors locked. Lights off. The smell of food still lingers in the air, but grills are cold. Spirits? Low. Enter: Benny's Clam Shack. We drive by what looks like a shut-down spot for the night. But something tells us to stop. Call it fate, call it hunger, call it a miracle in a bun. We hesitantly approach--ready to accept defeat--when out of nowhere, a Jeep pulls up. A man gets out. Not just any man--a legend, who we can only assume is the owner himself. Without hesitation, he waves us over, throws open the doors, and calls his team back into the kitchen. We tried to protest--we didn't want to trouble anyone. But he wouldn't hear it. "It's the Fourth of July," he said, as if that explained everything. (And honestly? It did.) Moments later: hot dogs, fries, and pure joy. This wasn't just food. This was a heroic act of hospitality, a moment of unexpected generosity that we'll remember every Fourth of July from now on. Benny's Clam Shack didn't just feed us--they gave us a story. And that story tastes like patriotism, kindness, and perfectly crispy fries. Honestly, thank you. From one Ben and his hungry girlfriend (myself) to another. Your kindness meant a lot on an extremely crazy filled day.

If you want to experience a casual environment and get the best food possible, this is the place to go. The sign out front featuring a one pound lobster roll caught my eye. Being on vacation I always want to try new places. After discussing how many people the one pounder could feed, I opted for a smaller version. The lobster was tender and succulent, the split roll and butter were fresh and so much I almost couldn't finish, but I did. It came with piping hot fries and a delicious cole slaw. Paired with an ice cold Stella it was all you ask for in a New England meal. We also had fish and chips. The haddock was fried perfectly and a huge portion. They offer 30 different flavors of wings. The wings were huge, tender and delicious. The owner and Mike who prepared our meals were so friendly and we had a great conversation with them. It was a delightful experience. I highly recommend.

Terrible, the chowder seems like it's gone bad... shame on me for thinking it would be possible more fresh being so close to the beach. It seems like it's frozen and reheated but wrong, just wrong. $33 for calamari, 6 Clam cakes and inedible chowder :-( . Had a fish sandwich here before and it was ok, nothing this bad. Very disappointing, too bad we drove out to eat beachside, didn't want to drive back for a refund.

First time trying this place after driving by it so many times on my way to the beach! I got the New England style clam chowder, clam cakes, and a lobster roll. Everything was absolutely delicious. The person at the counter was very friendly and seemed to feel the need to explain the reason for the costs, and I just thanked him and ordered the food because these times are really rough right now! I feel bad for those in the business having to apologize for food costs. Sigh. Anyway, great food and a positive experience.

We placed an order for pick up. There was little that was redeemable about the order. The cheesesteak had almost no cheese and was the size of a hot dog bun and didn't have the mushrooms and onions in it (for $12). They gave us the wrong hot dog ( A $10 HOT DOG!). Lastly, we ordered the wings. They didn't come with any blue cheese and were rancid. The moment we took them out of the bag we could smell that the chicken had gone bad. We ended up throwing all of the food out after a few bites because the wings smelled so gross.

Stumbled upon this place while staying next door at Fishermen's Memorial Campground. Ordered our food for takeout. Happy we found the place because the food was great. I'm not sure where the negative reviews are coming from. I ordered a simple fish and chips dinner. For about $17 I received a pretty generous portion of fried fish, a bunch of fries, cole slaw, lemon and tartar sauce. The fish was fried to perfection and was complemented by fries that were very lightly seasoned and adequately crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. The fish was flaky and went well with the tartar. The only negative I could find was that the tartar was a little heavy on what I believe was dill. To round it out was a small cup of cole slaw, which was not too sweet nor overly dressed as is often the case. Though I didn't order much, what I did order was very satisfying. Next time we're in town, I'll definitely be back.

My dining partners had the fish sandwich (which I tried and will definitely make a trip back to order one for myself) and the other had a hot dog. That too was excellent! With the Fish and Chips came chowder and I chose my favorite - Rhode Island. That too did not disappoint. The flavor and portion were perfect. The staff is primarily young and energetic. Some may not like the easy going atmosphere but I enjoyed it. Their enthusiasm added to the upbeat vibe. I never saw one of them not working. The only thing keeping this from a 5 star is the fact the ordering process - specifically the walk up area - is a bit chaotic as other reviews have written. We went early enough so there was no line and only 1 ahead of us. However by the time we came left there was congestion roaming around the porch area and we had to weave through to get out and off the porch. If there is a way to keep those that have ordered from hovering around - that would be a big help. I'm looking forward to go back again soon!

Adam waited on us at the inside bar and provided phenomenal service. His knowledge, enthusiasm, and dedication to his guests are a tremendous asset to your establishment. I would be remiss if I did not also recognize Eve, Casey, Paige, Al, Jordan, Dan, and Jeff. You have an incredible service team that is second to none. We have spent time at both the restaurant and the Tiki Bar, and most recently we had the pleasure of being served by Gina, who was also exceptional. As a former employment recruiter, I can honestly say that I would be trying to recruit this incredible staff myself! They are dedicated, positive, hospitable, and take tremendous pride in both their professional and personal service. They consistently perform under maximum stress with efficiency, professionalism, and a smile. I understand there is currently a contest on Yelp, and we would like to nominate Adam. He embodies everything you could want in a member of your waitstaff: spirit, dedication, knowledge, enthusiasm, and genuine devotion to providing an outstanding guest experience. He has a wonderful ability to make guests feel as though they are not only being well cared for, but that he is genuinely enjoying his job as well. Choosing one person was extremely difficult because your entire team deserves recognition. However, Adam stood out as a phenomenal leader, and that is why we are choosing him for our nomination. I would gladly hire or recommend any one of these fine young men and women. They are truly exceptional representatives of George's. We wish those who are moving on to college or graduate school all the best in their future endeavors. We will certainly continue to frequent George's, as we have for many years, and look forward to seeing this wonderful team whenever we visit. Thank you for having such an incredible group of people representing your establishment. They truly make the experience special! Cousins, Annie & Tommy (Annie 401-241-9427)

There is ample parking which is nice during tourist season. We had already heard that they serve the local form of clam chowder, not the Boston based milk and cream variety. I was thrilled to get the clear broth original style from before the popular updates were made for commercial acclaim. This clear broth allows the clam and potato to be dominant as the fishermen families served in the past, before Boston added cream and NYC added tomatoes. I also wanted my first lobster roll of the trip, also the fisherman local style, no mayo dressing or spices, just the cooked meat with a little warm butter on the warm meat. It was on a roll with lettuce which was actually unnecessary for me. Locals use hot dog rolls and simple lettuce. I used a fork and just ate the lobster. I've hear that some locals can just order the lobster meat plain in the plate. Same with their scallops though we only ordered lobster this time. They only had canned drinks this day so instead of iced tea or an Arnold Palmer, I had a simple Ginger Ale, though the others with me had Coke. The meat was warm, firm and well cooked and really tasty. And their pricing was really fair for the volume and quality. It was busy but we were well served.
