MAN!!! Ben's ROCKS. We arrived on Saturday at 11:50, got in line, and waited. They sold out before we got to the window and gave us a pie and some sides to take home. We went back Sunday and was able to get 1/2 lb of pulled pork and 1/2 lb of brisket...it was worth the wait. Ben is the friendliest, nicest guy you could meet. You can tell he really cares about his customers and the food. The pulled pork is seasoned so well, so tender, not too fatty and the sauce is very flavorful. The beans and slaw are killer. All around, a fantastic experience. The building itself tells you all you need to know- small business that closes when they sell out. No frills, just dang good BBQ.

Decided to try this last Sunday as soon as they opened due to hearing they sell out quickly sometimes! We couldn't be happier with our experience! The staff were so friendly! We ended up ordering the Pulled Pork, Ribs, and Smoked Turkey! All of them were delicious! The ribs literally were falling off the bone and had great flavor! The pulled pork was so tender and the turkey was perfect! The sauce is delicious but isn't needed as all the meats pack great flavor on their own! We didn't try sides this time, but we're definitely looking forward to going back and trying more items from the menu!

Made another trip to Ben's BBQ Shack yesterday and it did not disappoint. Great food, great service and always a great energetic conversation with Ben. I don't think Ben has ever met a stranger. Wife and I both had pulled pork sandwiches and baked beans, which were great. Outside dining in beautiful weather. Every other customer we spoke to was happy to be there and it showed. Definitely recommend making the drive and even dealing with the current construction in the area is well worth it.

Ben Hoffman is probably the happiest guy you'll ever meet. He must love his job. He makes the most amazing slow-cooked barbecue using only wood heat. He will proudly tell you that he doesn't use any electronics or technologies to prepare his barbecue. The first time, I met Ben, I had driven across town to try one of his pork sammiches. As we rolled in, we saw the cardboard sign saying, "Sorry, Sold Out". And there was Ben, sitting behind his little window in his tiny shack with a huge smile on his face. He belts out a laugh and tells us that we should preorder online. That's the best way to be ensured some of his coveted barbecue. Two weeks later we show up early and get in the line outside his little shack before he opens. Ben banters with the folks standing in the cold, telling them the food will be worth the wait. It was. I ordered the special grilled shrimp tacos (a Lenten special). We also ordered a Pork Belly Sammich. Food comes out in about 15 minutes. The tacos are good with big shrimp and Ben's cole slaw. The Pork Belly Sammich contains two strips of bbq pork that is topped with fresh sliced jalapeños and onions on a soft fresh roll. The meat is smoky, tender and juicy. The sandwich leaves me wanting to go back again the next day. The next time I will preorder. The parking lot is tiny with maybe 6 slots. People park across the street and walk. There are a couple picnic tables to eat at, weather permitting. Most people grab and go. As we leave the parking lot, the "Sorry, Sold Out" sign goes up and we hear Ben's gregarious laugh.

Pre-order is definitely the way to go, I got there 45 minutes after he opened on Saturday and he was sold out. Ben is a great guy that loves what he does and it shows. The next day I went over about 45 minutes before he opened and some other folks had the same idea, by noon there was probably 20 people. We had the Brisket, turkey and a pork belly sandwich. I smoke my own meats so I will say stand alone the brisket and turkey were just that. The pork belly sandwich though. The pork was cooked perfectly and I really would not have thought just onion and jalapeño would make this sandwich the star of our sampling. The beans were great and the Cole slaw was just creamy enough with a little crunch. The BBQ sauce is amazing and went well with everything we had. Ben wants to expand and I hope he does. He loves serving people and has fun doing it.

Went in on a Sunday afternoon just before closing time. I was very fortunate to get there when I did. The eatery is nestled between other homes in the neighborhood. There are a handful of parking spots available just next to the business otherwise there is additional street parking nearby. No dine in here but they offer some tables just adjacent to the shack. I didn't see any umbrellas that day, and it was a very hot day. It didn't matter, the food was so good and the ice cold Coke helped cool me off. Since I had not preordered, the last items available for the day were pulled pork and baked beans. The staff served up a very generous amount of pulled pork. It was so delicious I had to give my dog a little taste. Also had a side order other the baked beans and they were perfect. Not since traveling through Texas, I had not tasted something so simple yet so delicious. The price was very reasonable for the quality and taste. Give this place a try and make sure to call ahead.

5 stars! If you pre-order, you skip the line. Ben is the friendliest out there in the BBQ game and the food is so good. If you don't pre-order, get there early and get in line. And don't skip on the bourbon buttermilk pie. It is mouth watering, but take it home and make yourself a good coffee with it.

Driving past Big Hoffas daily in Westfield and finding the aroma no longer able to ignore. I finally intentionally pulled in and orderd theirs. Although, I wasn't disappointed in the brisket, it should have cooked at least 2-3 hours longer. Ambiance, ehh. Now the portion size of sides Mac and cheese and the Cole slaw had to be a mistake. The cup size is what I imagine you'd order from a kids menu. Maybe 2 ounce soufflés cup size. Unfortunately the Mac and cheese was horrid. It tasted like combining a generic version of some odd flavored Campbells cream soup, with dirty dish water blended into what was once perfectly delicious, traditional grannies recipe. Additionally, the bread was hard. The good news is, it didn't make me mad when I threw the bad away. I think if I do return, I'll forego the two toddler sides and order ala-cart and just get the brisket. One more thing, whats with the unsanitary curtains sprawled across the behind the scenes action, where the "magic" is created? Why is it hidden? What are we missing? Overall, the joint gets 3 stars. The gross ripoff sides get a zero, which is why the brisket got robbed. DO BETTER Big Hoffas. Please?

The menu is a mix of bbq, soul and Southern style cooking. Cornbread, green beans, peach cobbler, etc., included. I had the bbq loaded baked potato with bbq beef brisket. The brisket is amazingly tender and moist. The potato was smothered in cheese, onions, jalapeños and bacon. Yum. The bbq sauces are very tasty. I had the tangy sauce which had a kick to it. My husband had the pork tenderloin sandwich. The pork was hand prepped and breaded and very good. The Sidewinder fries are the BEST in Indy area - hands down and the portion is generous. Everyone was stealing his fries. My granddaughter had the Kid's pork bbq slider with Mac and cheese. She also devoured a corn muffin. She loved her meal. Others had the Pork Bbq sandwich combo with backed beans. The beans are freshly prepared and crave worthy. Pork sandwiches had a generous amount of moist pulled pork. We ordered at the counter and food is prepared fresh so there's a bit of a wait during dinner hour. About half people get their food to go. Prices are reasonable - especially desserts. The dining area is small - maybe five tables. Seating is tight. The patio area outside is nice if the Indiana weather cooperates. I love this place.

However, in planning the meal it had inadvertently been overlooked that Pizzology didn't open until 4pm. So, making a quick change of plans meant that we stopped in at Rackz almost directly in front of the Pizzology building. In case it's not obvious, this is a BBQ joint. There's accessible parking, an appropriate curb-cut, and the entryway is a pretty easy to maneuver one-sided glass door that is level to the ground. I found the interior to be a pretty good layout. There's also outside dining that's available when the weather is appropriate. The menu is consistent with most BBQ joints. Rackz offers both dinners (two sides and drink plus meat) or sandwich combos (only one side). The price range is generally in the $10-20 range, though they also offer some family-style options that go higher. So, we're talking BBQ, pulled pork, pulled chicken, brisket, ribs, and there's even a breaded tenderloin sandwich. They also have a "veggie BBQ dinner." Don't ask me, but it's on the menu. Sides are creative ranging from sidewinder fries to potato salad, mac n' cheese, baked beans, glazed carrots (which I got the chance to try from a fellow diner - I really did like these), and a few other items. I was honestly very impressed with the menu. They also have kids meals and a couple of different Wick's Pies (the classic sugar cream and pecan). I opted for pulled chicken sandwich with sidewinder fries. As we know, I always get iced tea. I really wanted to go for the breaded tenderloin, but I had a full afternoon and that's a splurge for me. However, I was super happy with this meal and would easily order it again. Employees are friendly. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Rackz also offers catering and they do have a rewards program. While this is a bit out of my way, I'd easily return when in the area.

The cooking is not as authentic however it is generous and it is fresh tasting. For example, the beef plate I believe had some type of seasoning on it. That gave it a flavor that is not exactly authentic. So I would recommend laying off the seasoning. The Katsu sauce, which is self service is also legitimate as as the teriyaki sauce. The primary issue was our service. While she was friendly, decent windows of time seemed to pass between her visits. She also did not provide us with utensils/napkins, as my wife requested them from the bar after our meals arrived, nor plates for our shared appetizer items. The food was very good, for the most part, as we continue to enjoy their Baked White Bean Hummus ($14) and the Greek Goddess Salad ($17) is excellent. I also do like their Fries ($3.50), as they are seasoned well with a nice exterior crunch, although it seemed like we had been given the bottom of the basket as a good bit of our order was crumbs. Drinks were OK. My wife wishes they offered a dry cider option, but their A&E Fleeting Youth ($7) consistently tends to be the closest to that offering. While I realize it's summer, I prefer porters and stouts that are on the sweeter side as opposed to coffee-esque. But the only option was their Into the Void, which I thought leaned into a coffee flavor, so I chose their King of Troy ($6.50), which was a decent lager. So I continue at 4 stars, in hopes our next visit will have service with a bit more awareness, fries from the top of the basket, and some of their other beer options that hit the spot in the past.
