Overall a safe choice for brunch and I'm interested in coming back to try some of their lunch/dinner options!

Helped making some personal recommendations and the food came out quickly. The only dish that came out very slowly was the dessert, we did wait about 25 - 30 minutes just for the softserve, but all other dishes came out in a moderate time. Rouge de Bordeaux Milk Bread, comes with cultured amazake butter and some salt. Comes out super warm, puffy, and soft. Very nice pull and the butter is super decadent. Very great take on a japanese shokupan, we were hesitant at first, but it makes for a good appetizer 5:5 Warm Sesame Pancakes were like those mini sesame mochi pancakes at chinese dim sum, but the texture was slightly airy. The sauce to accompany it was unlike anything i've had, smoked trout, avocado and yuzu. The avocado was not over powering and the cream on top was whipped. Amazing pairing. 5/5 Sashimi of Kanpachi, japanese cucumber salad as the base and dressing with the kanpachi sashimi. I will say this was the weakest dish of the night. While still good, it was a bit too tart, it overpowered the other natural flavors. Fish was still very good, tender and not fishy, but again, over powered but all the tartness in the dish. 3/5 Yellowfin Tuna on sushi rice - this was a great shareable plate of upscale poke. The tuna was great, no fishy taste, perfectly seasoned and the smoked kira had an amazing pop of flavor. Very rich and decadent dish, absolutely loved the harmony of a slight smokey flavor to the nice rich, umami savoriness. 5/5 Crispy Caledonian Prawns - Absolute star of the night. We could not stop talking about these prawns. Big plump prawns, fried perfectly, where the prawn itself was not dry but the shell had a shatteringly crispy exterior definitely slightly coated with a starch to give it a nice crunch. The chili ramp sunomono was a great touch, not spicy at all but added a great touch of flavor that complimented the crispy prawns. Could devour plates of these! 6/5! Sword-Fish Katsu Style - A great take with sword fish, flakey but not overcooked, great thin crispy katsu. Accompanied by kumquat and cauliflower, helps cut down the greasiness. The sauce with it was a buttery tart sauce. This was a lot better where the tartness helped the fried fish. It was like eating a fried fish burger without the buns. I really enjoyed this one. 5/5 Lastly we ordered a softserve with peaches, shokupan croutons and a caramel dressing. We had to wait about 25 minutes just for the small softserve so we were a bit surprised as other dishes came out relatively quickly or in an orderly fashion. It still tasted great as a little small dessert but definitely was surprised by how long it took. 3/5 Overall, we were very happy with our experience at Ethel's and it definitely lives up to the standard it sets. Our evening went downhill from there...After our order was taken, and our food brought out, we never saw our server again. I finished my prosecco and never got the opportunity to order a second glass. Eventually, I told my 6-year-old to wait while I went and asked for a dessert menu. At which point I mentioned that we never saw our server. The woman at the stand handed me dessert menus and said someone would be with us shortly. A different server came and took our dessert order. But after dessert was brought to us, once again we were ignored. When I tell you that we could've gotten up and left and never paid, nobody would have noticed. That's how much we were ignored. I was fucking pissed at this point. I got up with my child to go complain when the server quickly noticed and asked if everything was ok...fuck no it's not ok! Quickly gave him my room number and said that the evenings service was atrocious. And we walked away. And if the service was bad, the food was worse. When I tell you a DiGiorno pizza is better than their rendition of a margarita pizza, it's not an exaggeration. My pizza literally had four tiny sprigs of basil. And their olive paste garnish on it is unnecessary. Their twist on the margarita pizza was not appetizing. I can't complain about their fries though. It was basically the only thing we ate that we enjoyed. Their guacamole was rough too. Lacked flavor. The dessert was the biggest disappointment, food-wise. It appeared to be a brownie baked on a chocolate chip cookie, cut into a pie slice. It was HARD. I gave up trying to get my spoon through it. Needed a steak knife. The ice cream was fine. After this experience, we decided we would not be eating at the restaurant for the rest of our time at the hotel. We went and picked up food or ordered in. The bartenders seemed nice, but once the afternoon hit, my daughter had to wait over 30 minutes for a Shirley Temple to be brought to the pool. After waiting too long I decided to get up and go to the bar and ask what was going on. Her Shirley Temple was sitting there at the bar, and they had accidentally put it in a typical glass, which is not permitted at the pool. The bartender apologized because the server who had taken my order at the pool, did not relay to the bartender that the order was for the pool area. All in all, I would never eat here again. As a local, it's disappointing because the ambience is nice. But the food is overpriced and not even close to being good. And as for the service? My God. This was officially the worst restaurant I have ever eaten at. Ever. When the manager of the hotel asked how our stay was, I casually mentioned that the restaurant was lacking in a lot of ways. But I didn't expand on the experience. However, I was surprised to see that the manager had taken off the meals from the charges to my room when I checked out. And I sincerely appreciate that. I never asked for it, but was appreciative as it was unexpected. Bottom line. The hotel is a nice stay, and I plan on staying again. But you couldn't pay me to eat at that restaurant.

Our server Ellie appeared, waters were delivered and she took our drink order. Our drinks were delivered and our food order was taken. Seamless, and quick, even with some questions from the ladies. Mind you, it was lunch time on Castro Street, pedestrians only, so very trendy. Busy. NOISE LEVEL LOUD. You may remove hearing aids. DOUBLE SMASH BURGER $19.50 garlic dijonnaise / American cheese / red onion / dill pickles and that was it. Top bun was room temperature, and the bottom bun was only warm from the cooked meat. Had a nice grilled cheese burger aroma, tasting like any other greasy, juicy, salty, cheese burger, nothing different or special. Accompanying fries were mildly seasoned, and I found no need to add salt. It was good, would order it again, but I don't feel it's worth the price. From the $13.00 special price menu: FISH & CHIPS $13.00 - what there was of the small portion of fish was seasoned well, as were the chips (fries). The Brit (the Duchess) in the party, gave her approval. The realm settled into contentment. COKE - $3.95 - glass with ice and straw was just enough to get me through my meal. GINGER LIME SODA - $7.00 - the Duchess was not happy with her order stating it was too sour, lacking any sweetness. She would never, ever order again and especially not at this price. I stole the woman's pickle chips and the flavor was great, just perfect . . . yum. Accompanied by two IPA beers. The cloudy lagers seemed to fill the bill. These burgers appeared to be just normal, greasy, juicy, salty regular cheese burgers. Nothing to take your breath away. SERVICE: Great! Ellie was attentive without hovering. It was a busy lunchtime hour, but they seem to have enough staff to handle the lunch rush.
