OK, this is a little place run by the owner and his family or something. The advantage there is that you have a different vibe from the large, over-air-conditioned sushi family buffet types of places. i.e., it isn't full of crying babies and old people and people trying to look like yuppies. It feels like one of those places you sometimes decide to declare "your place". The sushi is good. It's fresh. Which is pretty much what there is to say about sushi. Prices are good. There were strange things going on ( flat soda, no AC, no server when there were zero customers) but I overlooked it due to the Yelp ratings. My Sashimi Bowl came out, it had a lot of pepper and cooked fish (it is suppose to have only raw fish), also there was very little fish in the bowl (like 6 small squares) a Sashimi Bowl is usually pricy because it has more fresh raw fish. The server put a bowl of some "special" sauce in front of me and when I looked at it was covered with 15-20 flies. I was truly disgusted, when I told the server she didn't apologize, just said "oh" and took the bowl away. I got out asap after paying the bill. I don't know why they have 4 stars, they need to step it up. read more

Small portion diners beware... The bento boxes here are generous in size! I had the chance of eating here on 7/25 right at the peak dinner hour. The place was full, but in a good way. Service was very prompt, and after the dinner rush we had time to talk to the lead waiter and waitress (could be the owners)... nice folks. We had the teriyaki beef and the chicken teriyaki bento boxes, along with an additional New York roll. meat was cooked very nicely, tempura was just right, but... there is a lot of food in that dinner special! I have no reservations about recommending this restaurant. It will be on my list when ever I'm in Bakersfield (about once a month). read more

It was ok! Where should I begin... After a long day of car shopping, I decided to take my friend out to Sushi because she was so nice for coming with me. So we go in, and it was pretty slow, the lighting was dim and the place was small. Not a bad atmosphere at all it was really cute, and smelled nice! We were brought out cold water and asked for drinks immedietly (awesome) and we were brought edemame and Miso. The Miso was salty, but you can't really mess up edemeame. I got my usual order of Baked green oysters and a bunch of different roles. The appetizers were brought out fast. My friend got a hot bottle of sake, and she got really drunk -__- but we ate a lot. Her daughter is a little too young and not adventurous enough to eat sushi, so we got her a teriyaki chicken bowl. Like I said the food came out fast, and the sushi was below average, it was ok. The chicken teriyaki was dry but wasn't BAD. I approve of the muscles they were good. read more

Jay, Cindy and staff are wonderful. They have created a nice friendly atmosphere. We have been going for years and always have excellent consistency of hot and cold sushi choices. They start your meal off with complimentary Mizo and edamame, such a nice touch. We often go with the grandkids and for family occasions. We have not ever had a bad meal. Quiet unassuming little sanctuary. The owners serve as the waiters and they work hard to get it right. Good sushi that is fresh, basic and still tastes of the sea. My wife and I have made this our go to Sushi spot in Bakersfield over the past 5 years. We have tried every other sushi restaurant in town and each had their qualities, I would never disparage other local businesses. However, the atmosphere and personal attention we have received at Bento Express has made us feel like we are appreciated and every time has been memorable. I even trusted their staff with the Engagement Ring I purchased for my (now) wife. They built a custom plate of a hollowed out orange with a roll around it, when she opened the orange her ring was perfectly placed inside to make an amazing presentation when I proposed (on one knee right in the restaurant). If you have the time to sit and enjoy your meal, I would highly recommend trying Bento Express. read more

Wanted try this place for a long time. My friend wanted what I thought sushi, but she really wanted a place where they cook in front of you. They don't cook right in front of you by the way even though you can see the chef from where you are sitting . We ordered the dinner special , my friend got steak and I got chicken. Menu is misleading. I have been here one other time and it was pretty good. I grabbed a To Go menu because it's on my way home. I ordered take out today based on the To Go menu. When I got home I realized that the rolls were covered in sauce that was not mentioned on the menu. I threw about $30 worth of sushi away. I had a few pieces of sashimi and it wasn't as fresh as I remembered it being. Total bummer because I had a sushi craving. If you want sushi go to Jin Sushi (downtown) or Kan Pai- more pricey but consistently delicious and fresh. read more

Bento Express has been in Bakersfield for as long as I can remember! I never thought to even try the place in the past, but I always noticed it on the corner of Oak. I finally decided to try it out for their special sushi rolls since the other sushi restaurant I used to frequent (ENSO) became very slow. I LOVED every roll I got. They have special rolls a million times better than ENSO and every other place I've been to here and their prices seem to be lower for the portions they provide. It seems to be owned by a family as well, and I can always appreciate that because the overall experience wasn't uncomfortable at all. OH! The tonkatsu was interesting as well. I'd never tried any before, but it had a similar taste to brown sugar and was very tasty and cheap! They also give miso soup and edamame after you've been seated, and both were delicious. I highly recommend checking Bento Express out if you haven't yet! read more

Was recommended this place while conducting business in Bakersfield, and I'm not disappointed - I'm also not blown away. I walked in just before they closed for the afternoon, and was pleased to receive such a warm reception - even by folks looking forward to downtime. The hostess/waitress was extremely helpful, very attentive, and accommodating. I was in the mood for a little bit of everything, and the bento that I ordered was exactly that. I was given a small dish of edamame and a bowl of miso soup. Both were good, but typical. I opted for an iced green tea, and that was brewed nicely. But the bento was the highlight. It contained 5 piece sushi, with a 4 piece California roll, mixed tempura, salad, rice and a giant mound of chicken teriyaki. Although everything was prepared wonderfully, I was a bit annoyed that someone like me, who doesn't eat chicken, was forced to get that option. While I packed it away for a friend, they did say that it was very, very good. After getting my fill, I walked out to the tune of 15.00 - including tip. While the food prep isn't anything out of the ordinary ("typical" Japanese fare), I was very impressed by the waitstaff and the quality of the food. I would definitely return. read more

Owners and servers were nice. As soon as I step in, I can smell and feel the oil, poor ventilation. Had the bento box, with fried rice, beef teriyaki, tempura, ca roll and salad. Fried rice was only with egg and was bland. Ca roll was small and a tiny avocado. Beef was thinly sliced style, like Yoshinoya. Tempura was a bit soggy and old oil. Sushi #35 special was ok. Not enough punch and they used a lot of filler, veggie, onions, etc. Spicy scallop extra spicy was not spicy at all. They use masago and no shiso mint leaf. They also have no real crab, hiks.
