The main room has a lot of 4- and 2- person tables, but we somehow lucked out and got a tatami room to ourselves. Unluckily, the AC was broken and it was a 90 degree day, but they did their best with box fans. We had the pork and salmon donburis and they arrived quickly and were amazing! No complaints.

Anywho, we ordered a variety of items to try: new stamina don, clam chowder croquette, kani chirashi bento, and a salmon kama bento. Regarding the food: New stamina don came with slice beef, sliced beef tongue, braised pork, poached egg, and kimchi over rice. The sliced beef was cooked to rare, and the braised pork was very tender. The rice also came with the poached egg, kewpie mayo and a lemon, mixing it all together with the rice made it have a nice creamy flavor. Clam chowder croquette was something I have never heard of before, so I definitely wanted to try it. This was delicious, would definitely get it again. A fried crispy croquette with clam chowder in it but also some mashed potatoes and tonkotsu sauce on top. Kani chirashi bento had snow crab, fish roe over rice, rolled egg omelette, sashimi, fried boneless chicken, and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The sashimi came with 4 pieces, 2 tuna and 2 salmon. the tuna was a little fishy but the soy sauce helped. The salmon was actually pretty good - good fattiness. The fried chicken was fine, a few pieces were dry. Overall this bento was good. Salmon Kama bento is salmon collar over rice, fried boneless chicken, takoyaki and edamame, blistered tomatoes and shisito peppers with pickles. The salmon collar needed some salt in my opinion. For the food overall, it was a little bit under seasoned for me but for portion, price and quality are good.

After we were seated, we didn't need to order anything, but there was a QR code to see the menu or look at additional items (sake pairings etc) and drinks. For drinks: While the server brought complimentary champagne to celebrate, we had to try the cocktails. We ordered the lychee and the yuzu one and they were soo good! I prefered the yuzu and my boyfriend preferred the lychee martini. Set course was great, we didn't have to wait long between each item. The fish was really fresh, I loved the flavors and unique fish. The rice was seasoned very well. They give you ginger to cleanse your palette between nigiri. Mango dessert was really fun and unique. I liked it a lot.

I know their menu does change depending on the season. As a sushi enjoyer though I've got experience fish I never go to try. I thought the openers and ending was just as good as the main course. We had 2 chief, and both of them were great. The servers were awesome too. They explained what each dish was which was p cool. Loved the japanese decor and bar going inside too. My personal favorite (outside of otaro and wagyu) was the red snapper. The shrimp opener was pretty awesome too, sweet and fresh tasting. Also the desert was great considering I do have a basis for mangos. Their sake flight, is something I'd recommend too. ONE thing I didn't enjoy was their scallop and uni dish. Normally I do like them but together it wasn't doing it for me. My friend did like it though. Great experience, would come again for a special occasion. Note: First time having Omakase

(my only wish is a name tag, what's your name again?) ordered: 1-5 rating 2 Omakase: me (5), daughter (4) loved that the server asked if we had any fish we did not like to eat in our Omakase. i enjoyed a new dining experience with a clean taste & fresh dishes, able to taste all the food not covered in sauces. every meal was excellent in my opinion. my 1st omakase. my daughter didn't like 2 dishes for her palate. sushi & sashimi platter (5) katsu donburi (5) 1 bento box (5) aigamo duck (5) rainbow roll (5) dragon roll (5) matcha tiramisu (5+) i loved this dessert, for me a nice bitter matcha flavor we all agreed fish was fresh & all our dishes were to our liking. now i want to try other Omakase! although i don't drive to Oakridge area much, i would come back to eat here again.

We discovered Gombei while in San Jose for a conference and wanted legit Japanese, not things near the hotel. And very glad we found this small restaurant. And it's as authentic as you'd expect. Family owned, the staff was friendly and helpful, and clearly popular with local people...everyone in there were regulars that knew the owners! Food was delicious and fresh, simple and very much like comfort food. I got their special, with grilled mackerel & salmon. Very tasty, though the salmon was more well done than I liked. My husband had the katsu curry which was delicious. The gyoza was also great and nicely pan fried. We loved the family atmosphere, and how comfortable it felt. Restaurant is cheery and bright, but cozy. Will come again when I'm in the San Jose area! Thank you for the comfort food experience!

I also didn't see the friendly lady I used to recognize, it seems like things have changed. Maybe new management? Prices have gone up, which is pretty normal these days. I ordered the special. The meat was salty and chewy, and the rest of the food was just okay, nothing bad, but nothing good either. Service was standard. We ordered, ate, and left.
