I had not heard of Bentoful, but apparently it is a chain. The concept is similar to what you can do at the Whole Foods food bar, pick out your food and then measure it. You start out picking out salads, where there was a good selection and everything looked fresh. I always love cheese, but that was not a choice. Then the dressing is at the end. Next, they have an impressive array of rices. I had the regular fried rice. It as fine, could have used a little more flavor but this looked healthy (which a lot of the food did). Next were the proteins. They had a nice selection of them. I had some of the chicken teriyaki and beef bulgogi. The beef bulgogi was one on the best things I had. The chicken teriyaki was OK, a little dry. Then they also had egg rolls and dumplings. They were OK, like many items I think they lean towards healthy cooking. Print your receipt - Went to Bentoful for lunch and ordered through the kiosk. After paying I selected the 'no receipt' option. When my food was ready, I walked up and was told to show my receipt, which I said I didn't print. I was scolded about how were they supposed to know it was mine. The workers there were very nice and helped sort me out. The large size comes with 3 pill shaped togo boxes and the smaller size only two. You pick a base (I chose half rice half kale), a main dish (spicy chicken) and three sides (meatballs, spring roll, and brocolli) The kale came with some sort of pesto on the side as a dressing and it was very good. I am surprised that this place gets such good reviews. Went in for lunch and was really excited to try this place out but the experience I got was pretty disappointing. I never seen this much of oil in Fried rice and also the main chicken dish had undercooked potatoes and smelly chicken. Portion of kimchi was super small as well. Came by for lunch and it was amazing! The restaurant is located in the Amazon Amelia building but has an outdoor entrance along Fairview Ave. Ordering is done on a tablet near the entrance. They have lots of different options for creating your bento including what main & side dishes as well as condiment choices and other customizations. Beautifully packaged and easy to take on the go or you can dine in. The restaurant has fairly limited hours but you can eat in the seating area of the Amazon building anytime. Bulgogi was excellent, very tender and flavorful, kimchi fried rice had great flavor and the eggplant, spring rolls, and kimchi were all very tasty and rounded out the meal nicely. One of the sauces they had as an option was a lemongrass sriracha which I hadnt heard of before but this went perfectly with the bulgogi giving it a more punchy flavor. Portion size looks small in the little containers but its actually a lot of food. Staff was super friendly they even came by and asked if i'd like to sample a piece of their fried chicken. Their food just hits so close to home! SLU barely has any korean food so not only am i happy about this place but even more so because the food is very tasty. Ordering is super easy, you can order online or in person via a kiosk (covid friendly because it minimizes your contact with anyone) and you just pick up to two carbs, three side dishes and one main protein. The variety of options they have is simply amazing and the portion is very generous. The last time i got bentoful, i got half white rice& yakisoba, soy marinated egg, avocado salad, stir fried eggplants and korean fried chicken as my main. It was so much food and the leftovers ended up becoming my dinner. The only thing i wish i could change is that they close just after lunch time. You start by customizing your bento (base, meats, sides) on slips of paper, similar to a lot of poke places. I ordered mine with: Base - Brown rice and greens Meat - Chicken Teriyaki Sides - Seaweed Salad, Dumplings, Eggplant The total came out to $13. I immediately realized I should've taken a closer look at the counter before making my order as some of the sides like the yakisoba and fried rice looked much better than my basic base order! The bulgogi also looked great for an extra $1. The food was all pretty good. In particular, the sides were very flavorful and IMO the highlight. Interesting concept, however the food is always a bit underwhelming and the manager can be really brusque and bossy. And not the cheapest either for what you get. The food looks pretty good, but it is a bit on the bland side. And none of it is really particularly healthy. However they do have an interesting set of options to choose from, so I still think that counts for something. The manager yelled at me both times I was there. Once because I walked all the way to the display case (without cutting any line or crossing any rope) when apparently I was supposed to stop at the cafe register and the second because I was pacing around while waiting for a friend and crossed into the restaurant area, which at that moment was closed (again no rope or anything limiting the area). While this is a popular place for lunch I found it mediocre in its quality. The beef was too fatty and stringy and the spring rolls very dry and lacking flavor. While the staff was friendly it was slightly confusing the way they set up the ordering process. Most places I patronize that are set up like that allow you to tell the people behind the line what you'd like as you move along towards the cash register. This place has you walk towards the register and input what you want and then pay. That may work well for those that come their regularly but for the first time customers it doesn't allow you to observe the food on the line and ask questions while getting a visual of it and have the line put it together. This place is a hidden gem inside Amazon Amelia building. I would've gone to Amazon office more often had I known that this place existed! They are NOT skimpy on their food. You get to choose up to 2 bases, and they fill that one line of bento with the base of your choice. But most importantly, they fill the entirely same size of bento box with the protein of your choice. Last row is three choices or banchan (side dish) of your choice!!! In terms of quality, oh my - what a great collection and variety of food. Even though you get that much food, you don't get tired of the taste since it comes with such various food. Each dish tasted so amazing, not a typical fast-food/MSG taste, but authentic taste. They use their home-made kimchi which made sense in hindsight because they DID taste very authentic Korean. Nutrition wise they had an amazing ratio of carbs - protein- veggies etc ratio. I felt so energetic after this lunch today! I appreciate the large selection of mains and sides so I rarely get bored. I find that I most often order beef bulgogi, but occasionally mix it up. The quality of the various items is excellent for the price, and highly consistent. Lastly, I wanted to mention that I am trans, and all of the staff here have always treated me with kindness and respect. An interesting lunchbox/cafeteria style Korean food concept that's great to grab for a quick lunch break. To preface, this isn't by any means a sit down style restaurant but it does provide interesting options for building your own bento style lunch box. Food is already prepped ahead of time and assembled once an order is placed. You are offered a selection of proteins, mains and sides that you can pick and choose a number of based on the size you select. There are a lot of interesting choices that are more traditional Korean sides and others that you would find in a typical bento. I will admit I had some skepticism towards how the food would taste since it is cafeteria style but it was definitely reminiscent of school lunches in Korea! (Which are not to be confused with the sad excuse for school lunches in the states). Tried the spicy pork bulgogi and dak galbi. Both were seasoned well although the potatoes in the dak galbi were somewhat undercooked to my taste. They do offer a daily special which should be interesting to see how that changes! In all, would definitely recommend as a quick grab and go for a meal break but if you're looking to dine in and enjoy Korean food, would probably suggest somewhere else. read more
