I've lived in the area for over 10 years and have ordered bagels from all three Bergen locations - so I'm familiar with this business. I have had huge problems with this particular location, which is a complaint about the service more than the food. The bagels and the cream cheese selection are decent, not the best in new york, but certainly not bad. OK, for that I would have given 3 or 4 stars. Problem is that every time I have come in here, literally over 10 times since it opened, something has been wrong with my order. I order the same thing every time, and each time, one or more ingredients was missing. The guys behind the counter also are really sloppy with putting the sandwiches together - like, all the salmon is on one side and whole pieces of the bagel are missing cream cheese. I get cucumber slices that are about 1/2-inch thick, and lopsided, because they don't don't know how to dice well. OK if it were a 4 dollar bagel, but for 10 bucks? Hell no. Slicing and placement of the ingredients is a huge part of what you're paying for. The last time I was there I ordered a bagel, I was sitting at the counter eating it, and the guy who prepared it (keep in mind they don't wear gloves) came outside, smoked a cigarette, and stuck his hand down his pants (under the jeans) to scratch himself. Right in front of the customer window. This grossed me out to the point of no return. read more

Worst delivery experience EVER. We placed an order and they only showed up with half the order. An hour later, more of the order showed up. It's been over two and a half hours and still no sandwich. How could I fail to comment on the fact that when I first moved to Clinton Hill two and a half years ago a "Very Special Delivery boy" (lovingly referred to by the Chocolate Factory residents as Dirty Sanchez) brought me my lunch and after making the exchange from sandwich to cash, delivery boy produced his member from between zipper cleavage, and inspite of my yelling at him to put it away and "get out" he exploded his 2 second orgasm all over the hardwood floor IN FRONT of my store counter. As if this was perfectly natural, he thanked me, zipped up his fly and quickly took his exit. In muted shock, i eventually mustered up enough strength to clump up some paper towel and remove his f$#@ing semen from my floor. Apparently this same delivery boy has been performing similar rituals in other locations and has made quite the reputation for himself. It's been a couple of years now, and after a long hiatus I finally started ordering from there again. I thought he was gone because I hadn't seen him in ages, but just last month he appeared again at my storefront with my lunch in his hands. He actually made a reference to "our last encounter" and asked me if "I was alone." Thankfully my business partner appeared from the back space and the delivery boy left. I haven't seen him since. I'm not sure how to rate the restaurant based on this isolated experience as it is more of a reflection on the employee than the establishment. I don't wish to give Bergen Bagels a negative review because their delivery service (albeit unique) has always been punctual and I order from them a lot. I suppose the moral of this story is love Bergen Bagels but be wary of who's toting. Just saying. read more

This is souly based on a delivery experience this past weekend that just pushed me and my VERY passive fiance' to a breaking point. We ordered breakfast for delivery on Sunday morning @ around 930am. By 1030am we were getting hungry and pretty fed up, so we called the store to be told that they "just sent the guy out". Flash foward to 1055am and the buzzer rings. We were about to tell the guy to take the food back already, but when he told us that 'they didn't send me with change", we sent the delivery guy back and told him we didn't want to the food at all. 3 minutes later the buzzer rings again and he came back with change. It wasn't TOTALLY this guys fault, but somethings gotta give! COME ON! Get your crap together people! We have ordered delivery from Bergen on a number of occasions and each time the guys that take the delivery orders are nasty and rude and they take forever to deliver. I know I am not exagerating when I see that the exact same things are said by other Yelpers. It is really a darn shame that folks that make such a good product give THE WORST customer service. Bagel quality is top notch. Service is a bit slow, but not terrible or anything. Not sure about all the negative reviews, but my experience was pretty good. Good bagels don't need to be toasted. I was told this once by a bagel expert at a well-known bagel establishment in the East Village (yes, the one that goes by the same name as that park across the street). I did not get my bagel toasted at Bergen Bagels, and it was very VERY good. It had the perfect fluffy to chewy ratio and a slightly crisp crust every good bagel should have. I ordered the classic everything with plain cream cheese- excellent choice. I stopped by on a Sunday around noon and there were a few tables filled and no line. By the time I had left a line started building up. Not overly crowded in anyway. The guy at the register was taking his time finishing up a task before ringing me up. I have very strong, very loving feelings for Bergen Bagels. The line moves quickly, the staff is jovial, the bagels are fresh (sometimes you can glimpse a batch in progress while at the back of the shop), there is a huge selection of vegan spreads as well as the regular stuff, and on a slow Sunday I once received a Black and White cookie on credit (I had enough cash for my bagel but not the cookie and when I realized and apologized they wouldn't let me cut the cookie from my order, claiming I was a nice customer; I think *they* are just nice people). I've tried quite a few variations, but I would recommend an everything bagel with scallion cream cheese. Seriously perfect combination. Eat it while it's toasty. As for bagels, my rankings are as follows: 1. Everything 2. Whole wheat everything 3. Plain 4. Cinnamon raisin (normally I like cinnamon raisin bagels very much, but they're just a little plain here) For spreads/cream cheese: 1. Scallion 2. Vegetable 3. Tofu scallion 4. Plain (solid, just, you know, plain) 5. Tofu vegetable (this is a little on the sweet side, for some reason) 6. Sun dried tomato SICK. Blueberry (I love blueberry foods but I had to scrape this off; maybe the sour cream cheese didn't work with the blueberries? maybe it was the end of the batch?) Even if the blueberry cream cheese isn't great, I'm going to keep working my way through their spreads because a hot, toasty, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside bagel with cream cheese just starting to get soft in between is just SO DAMN DELICIOUS and I don't mind adventuring. Besides bagels/spreads, their Black and White cookies are alright. Their iced tea is fantastic--one sugar made mine perfectly sweet. I was in the neighborhood early Monday morning like 6am ughhhhh. And not being around in a long time passed by here and decided to stop in. My bagel experience over the years has been a roller coaster ride. I have eaten bagels when you could get a bakers dozen for a dollar so you can say I have some experience. Ordered a cinnamon raisin bagel and it was not tasting anywhere near cinnamon raisin at all wtf!!! It was barely toasted. Has quality gotten that bad in the bagel industry. The coffee was alright and the total was $3 dollars but the cinnamon raisin was weak like it tasted strange no where near any cinnamon or even raisins. Sad really sad. read more

Love going to bergen for breakfast. The bagels are fresh and delicious. Their cream cheese is light and creamy. My favorite is the blue berry cream cheese and vegetable cream cheese. The jalapeno one is surprisingly good too! The few cons about this place is the ice coffee and (sometimes) sandwiches. The ice coffee taste very watered down..before the ice melts and it simply taste of over night coffee. As for the sandwiches, they sometimes make it fresh for you, other times, like the paninis, they take whatever's in the display and heat it up, put some lettuce and other condiments in it, and call it fresh... read more

Vegan friendly bagel place! I love Bergen Bagel. They have a great selection of homemade tofu cream cheeses and they also have soy milk for coffee. I order delivery once or twice a week and they have never screwed up my order. In fact they even called me back right after I ordered once because I asked for the blue calcium Tropicana orange juice and after hanging up they realized they only had regular in stock, and they wanted to make sure that was OK. The bagels are a good circular size with a lot of dough in depth. Soft like it was made fresh and they give a good amount of spread. I ordered the lox cream cheese spread on an everything bagel. Service can be slow as probably not a good time to come during rush hour in the morning. There is not a lot of seating so this is mainly a grab and go place. You'll be lucky if you get a counter seat by the window. They have a bunch of items on their menu and an ample amount of spreads. The list on the chalk board is literally skies the limit. Good ol' Bergen Bagels. I don't know that I would come here a lot if I didn't live right around the corner from it, but I do, and so I do. Sure, I love it, but I have to acknowledge it's not perfect. You CAN sit down and eat but it's not particularly nice, and during peak times, can be scary as long lines of hungry locals wait patiently for their bagel sandwiches. Service is a little inconsistent -- botched orders do happen, and occasionally it's abysmally slow. The bacon/egg/cheese sandwich is usually great, but sometimes the bacon is totally undercooked. What gives? Bergen Bagels, I love you, but one of these days you're going to step up your game. Also, your hot coffee is a little weak for my taste. There is one guy who never pays attention to what you order. Steer clear of him. That's my only advice. If you can negotiate around this one person, you'll be awarded with a fluffy, moist bagel with tons (if not too much ) cream cheese. They have tons of flavors along with a bunch of tofu and alternative options. I get the baba ghanoush spread at least twice a week. It's that good. Otherwise I stick to the jalapeno cream cheese or some other vegetable option. They have the hyper-colored fruit cream cheeses, but they kind of weird me out. Too much color in the morning is bad for your health. Coffee kind of stinks, but it's cheap and serves its purpose. Salads and sandwiches are pretty boring and sit there forever. The low-cal tuna looks like it's been squatting for years. Who gets that? It looks like cat food. I wonder if they'll sell it in bulk so I can feed it to my cats? read more

The bagels here are generally pretty good; they make them on site, which as any bagel fan knows is key. I've gotten a few squashy ones, but usually they've got that nice crusty outside that sets a quality bagel apart. I've had their regular and tofu-scallion cream cheese, but nothing more exciting than that. If you're a flavored cream cheese fan, though, they've probably got something for you. I highly recommend their bran muffins and especially their LEMON POPPY SEED MUFFINS. This is a reliable place near my school. Though lately the price went up a little bit from 1.73 for a muffin to 1.84 (tax included). Their pumpernickle bagel is pretty awesome and they're very generous with their cream cheese. Their Russian panini is also great, its my classmate's favorite. However I think they're crab cakes are a bit on the salty side. they have a bit of a discount in the morning (6am to 11am) so I suggest you try. btw: most of their cream cheese are amazing. The new location is super large, clean and run efficiently. The bagels are okay, not amazing but not terrible either. They hit the spot if you're in the mood for a bagel. My biggest complaint is that the area where you order is set up before you can see a menu/any of the cream cheese/topping options. The best "everything " bagels in NYC. I've tried them everywhere else but these are the best. There's something about the dough (slightly saltier?) that makes them stand out. If I were to have one complaint it'd be that their counter service is pretty disorganized and the guys who work there tend to help the pretty girls from the Pratt rather than us regular joes. if only you delivered...sometimes even those few blocks from my apartment seem endless after a night out on the town. Yet, I still drag my tired, aching self over Bergen Bagels. I LOVE the Everything bagel! Hand rolled definitely makes a huge difference. This is not your run of the mill breakfast truck bagel. These are fresh, and wonderfully soft yet chewy. When you break the bagel apart, you can actually see the "hand rolled" swirls! My usual- (Everything bagel with Sun-dried Tomato Cream Cheese- Toasted) is always awesome. But if you're looking for that extra filling breakfast/brunch I highly recommend one of the bagel sandwiches. I had the Egg-Sausage-Cheese on and Everything Bagel. The eggs were SO FLUFFY, the cheese melting into the egg, and the Everything of the bagel seasoning the whole thing perfectly. Great selection of different cream cheeses and tofu spreads. My friend lactose intolerant friend Carol L. was actually worried that they messed up and didn't give her tofu since it tasted SO GOOD that she couldn't tell! There's room to sit down too, and enjoy the sunshine pouring in through the wall to ceiling windows, or if you're lucky, you can grab a spot on the benches outside. My experiences at Bergen bagels have always been delightful. Their bagels are so fresh and tasty it's just a pleasure to bite into them. The added selection/assortment/collection of cream cheese adds so much freedom to each order. I gotta say in definitely more of a sweet Bagel person so when I tried the savory cream cheeses I was quite disappointed. With that being said, the sweet flavors were amazing. The cashier does have an attitude and that's the worst thing to have in the morning but one of the servers ( I havent been able to see his nametag ) is an absolute delight. Really 3.5 stars. Their new location is an improvement as it's definitely larger and more accommodating to patrons who want to dine in. Their service in house is fast and friendly, the line will move at a good pace. When or if ordering over the phone you will be put on hold for a brief bit but then someone will take your order and they're usually friendly too, some of the staff more so than others. I highly recommend their everything bagels which aren't overly salty as I've experienced at some other bagel joints. Perfect balance of flavors, slightly chewy w/ just enough doughyness but you can always dig out the insides if you're that person to want to fill it with more cream cheese or whatever else. I am that person and my cream cheese poison is their tofu veggie or scallion "cheeses". Insanely good and a kind of novel item as it's not something you see every bagel joint. Definitely get a large black and white cookie to share with your paramour but if you're a piggie like me then you want to get the small plastic container of 10 to 12 mini black-and-white cookies right next to the register ;). Tried to call in an order over the phone because I was in my car and needed to just stop in and pick up the sandwich so I didn't have to park. They wouldn't take my order over the phone and I was told that I should just come in and order "because there's no line". I was in such a bind that I ended up going and ordering in person anyway. When I asked why I couldn't order on the phone, they told me that I would end up waiting anyway because of some reason or another. Sounds like an efficiency issue on their end. The sandwich wasn't even good - I got the Napoli. Way too much sun dried tomato, the eggplant seemed old, and the cheese (i subbed mozzarella for provolone) was pre-sliced. What is said about Bergen Bagels on Bergen can be said for this one on Myrtle (well, minus the cramped bit and lines out the door). Since moving to Bed Stuy, this location has replaced the original as part of my morning routine. The only deviation I can see between this location and the original is that the walnut raisin cream cheese has much more cinnamon than the one on Bergen. The walnut raisin cream cheese here is almost granular, a bit much for my taste. Cream cheese deviation aside, this place delivers. The bagels here are among the best in the city and I cherish being so close to Bergen Bagels. read more

Stopped here because the sign said "all baking done on premises". What they didn't say was that the baking was not "FRESHLY baked" on premises. I have eaten cinnamon rolls all over the world and I have never had anything worse than what I bought here today. Hard and dry!! I'll be perfectly honest, from the perspective of someone who only eats a few bagels every year; I could only see a marginal difference between Bergen's and any other bagel I've tasted. Maybe it's the way they're prepared but in my experience they came off as kind of stale to me and while initially their variety in bagels seems kind of novel, they all taste about the same sans for a brief aftertaste of the Cinnamon Raisin one. On the other hand, the place is fairly inexpensive and their service is fast. If you just want a quick breakfast on the go, Bergen's is as serviceable as any other place on Myrtle Avenue. The menu gets a bit more questionable as you skewer more and more away from their baked goods. Their hamburgers are as dry and flavorless as something you can quickly throw together at home and their sandwiches are low on meat considering their price. You are a lot better off just going to Hyunn's Deli which is next door. Maybe I'm wrong, the place has a huge fan base over at Pratt. I just don't understand why. read more
