I'm only familiar with one area of the menu, so this review may not be as complete as some, but that area was... stellar. A friend told me that the escargot here were world-class. I'm a lifelong fan of the little gastropods, so I headed over with another friend, and we had an appetizer platter and a dozen escargot each. It was true; these snails were among the most succulent I've ever had. All too often you find escargot that are rubbery vehicles for delicious sauce. But these were the snail equivalent of foie gras. And they had the perfect razor-crisp white wine to accompany them. I think it was a Picpoul de Pinet. There are lots of other reviews on here to fill you in on the rest of the menu. I'm just saying, if you go and you are at all a fan of escargot, you gotta get 'em. And if you've never had them before, these would be the ones to try! read more

I had a great experience at brunch so had my mother's birthday dinner here. That was different experience. The broccoli celery soup tasted like they put the celery water and a bit broccoli in a blender and served it without seasoning. Didn't eat it. My sister tried the lamb and said it was okay. My mother had the cassoulet. She described it as "one bite was garlic and next salt." I tried a bite and got the very salty beans. Very disappointing. On the bright side, the service was nice. My old fashion was perfect. The live pate' delish (the other pate' was not). The warm cheese appetizer was good. The Chicken thigh with carbonara was good. The pear tart was okay. We all left the restaurant rather disappointed. Perhaps we had too high expectations after having such a great brunch here. read more

The GF and I moved into the woodstock neighborhood a little over a year ago. We found this place on a whim and have been regulars ever since. A hidden gem in the area. Great ambiance, fantastic food. The beef filet is consistently one of the best steaks in town (It's very difficult for me to order steaks elsewhere because this dish has spoiled me) and is at a very reasonable price. The baked cheese (Camembert) with the crostini / onion jam is next level and will please the palette of any cheese lover. The only reason I held off writing a review sooner was for selfish reasons, but it's time to share Bergerac with the world. read more

The creme brûlée was one of the best things I have ever eaten. So silky and amazing! Would come back just for this.

If I had to use one word to describe this place, I would proudly use the word authentic. The menu was written in French and the waitress was also fluent in Français. She was very polite and good at suggesting what to order. She continued to check on us to make sure our waters were filled and that we were enjoying our time. She did a great job. Their cuisine was excellent, the baked cheese appetizer was very good. Warning though, the cheese is hot so remember to let it cool down or blow on your bite before consuming it. The steak I ordered was very tender and I had no problem polishing my plate due to the deliciousness of the dish. To finish things off, because my family and I were celebrating my birthday, I was rewarded with a free dessert on the house. I ended up choosing an apple pair tart that was complemented with a scoop of French vanilla ice cream and a miniature cookie next to some whipped cream. It t'was delicious. My favorite restaurant in Portland. They have rotating wine selection so every time I have come in for dinner there are new wines to try. The brunch is amazing and they have a patio that is dog friendly. Dinner is also great but can sometime miss, one birthday dinner my entire meal was cold and there was no one else in the restaurant except us. A neighborhood gem I would gladly travel for, Bergerac has become our favorite spot for celebrations large and small. The classic French fare (often served with a PNW flare) is both inventive and deeply nostalgic (we love the escargots, cassoulet and creme brûlée), and the space and service are exceptionally warm and welcoming (even outside!) The food and vibe are sophisticated but unpretentious - such a welcome change from the hipper-than-thou trendiness of many Portland restaurants. We may not be able to travel to France right now, but this feels pretty damn close. read more

Food is over seasoned or lacking flavor -- really missing balance. I had steak (solid, properly good MR) without the pepper sauce (good idea) and my wife a halibut (lousy). We had the wine flight and the wine is nice, but the pours are stingy for a tasting and uneven between the volume across the four persons in my party. Place was waaaaaay to hot until I asked them to open the front door, which they did thank goodness. Service is over familiar and casual -- when I'm spending $100 a person I expect a more professional and polished level of service. And value to price is not a match. Prices would be more appropriate at -30% of what they are now. At that level, there are some things I would eat there, but not at current levels. read more

I dined here for the first time today and I have only good things to say. The restaurant is pretty small so I recommend that you make a reservation if you don't like waiting around. Nice and cozy vibe. The server was very nice and attentive. Food was great! I had the lamb navarin. The meat was very juicy and the sauce it was braised in was very delicious. My fiancé had the filet de boeuf, which had a very juicy steak as well. All the side veggies and potatoes (including my potato gratin) were yummy! My friends really loved their meals as well. Nothing authentic about this "French" food. Subpar at best. Clearly those who enjoy this place do not know French food. The little try-hard "fancy" touches on each dish completely ruined them. Like... raw, cold, shredded snap peas on the lamb dish? A truly strange choice and awful texture, especially considering it was paired with overly mushy, not-so-flavorful beans. The escargot and shellfish apps were literally the same sauce and just basically a mountain of wilted parsley in a hint of butter. To end it, the "pot du creme", was not a pot nor a creme. It was a chocolate ganache with a cherry compote on top that tasted like robitussin. There's a chance I would've looked past this outrageously overpriced mediocre meal in a crap part of town if it wasn't for the fact that they deemed 4 drinks in 3 hours to be too much to serve. Next time I want to be robbed I'll just stand down the block from this place. It'll hurt my feelings less. read more

What the heck? One star reviews of this place? How? Add us to the crowd of "live in the neighborhood and took too long to venture into this place" people. On rainy Sunday night one vegetarian, one just returned from five weeks in France niece, and one omnivore go into a restaurant. It was a birthday dinner for the niece. A bit of a risk, taking a just returned from France (with time in a cooking school) niece to a never tried French restaurant. One might critique my dish, seared duck, for being over sauced (as read in another review here). I was too busy enjoying it to even think so. My wife's autumn medley was also delicious. Our niece? Her dinner or duck confit compared favorably to the meals of France. We'll be back. I was motivated to write this review after seeing the one star ones. Despite living in the neighborhood, I hadn't ventured into Bergerac until fairly recently. I assumed it would be expensive or pretentious, or both. I also assumed, having a Celiac diagnosis (no gluten), being lactose intolerant, and several other food allergies; there would be no food I could eat. I was wrong! I was pleasantly surprised. The first time I had the duck confit and the escargot but have since had the lamb and the pate. The food was reasonably priced, not just for being French food, but also being authentic and fresh. I haven't had anything bad so far. They have their staples that keep me coming back, but they also have exciting and interesting rotating/weekly specials (e.g, grilled octopus, quail). Their drinks menu isn't bad, and they have a nice wine selection. Their mixed drinks are outstanding (Montparnasse, Elderflower) and distinctive. My only complaint, I wish the Pot au Chocolat (GF) had a coconut milk or almond milk, option. Maybe if everyone can recommend it. ;) The atmosphere is fairly intimate and formal casual, though you could -Not- pretentious, a big plus for me (Heart on Woodstock, take note). The staff is friendly and attentive. The owner, I think his name is..Joris, he's highly informative and a great chef. I like going here for special occasions. I don't go out to dinner especially often, but I like to bring friends and family here. I'm glad I'm finally came in! It's well worth the 10 minute drive for me. I'll be back again. read more

My special lady friend and myself came in a month ago on a Friday evening at 8:50pm. Their yelp profile, website, and a google search all say they close at 9:30. We arrive to a glowing open sign in the window. Upon entering a woman informed us that they were closed and she forgot to turn off the sign. Ok, I understand that places close early but after leaving, she still left the sign on. We decided to give it another shot last night. The same woman waited on us. There were plenty of tables open but she insisted on seating us 12 inches from a party of 4 at a tiny/cramped table. Not only that, she was incredibly awkward. Every single interaction with her was completely awkward, she wasn't rude or anything like that, she just seemed lost and unnatural. Besides the weird experience with the waitress, the food was absolutely amazing. This was my second time dining here and it was just as great as the first time. I cannot express how delicious everything was. I'm pretty sure you could order anything here and it would be phenomenal, as far as food goes this is probably the Woodstock neighborhoods greatest hidden gem. I really want to give this place a 3 star review for the strange waitress but I don't want to deter you from dining here. The food alone easily exceeds 5 stars. We have eaten here two times. Food: Poorly prepared. Amuse bouche has been strange both times, one time corn chips and tapenade, the other a cold beet soup four of us rejected. Duck breast was over cooked. Duck confit almost burned. The desserts are good. At $50 for an entrée and dessert, they are overpriced next to comparable restaurants. I like Bergerac, it has a nice neighborhood feel, clean flavors and a policy that they are not going to change a dish for you. I hate it when someone wants to re-orchestrate the chef's creation. If I were emperor these heathens would be exiled. My chief complaint surrounds the US economy and our failing president who has impacted the world so much that the cassoulet, which I have had near and far, from Alsace to Paris, New York to my favorite at Bistro Jeanty in Yountville, has been reduced to offering a mere crisp wing alongside the half sausage and dollop of pork belly. What has happened the revered confit leg these post covid days? Did they refuse the jab and are not allowed into Portland eateries, were they caught maskless on a United Airlines flight and denied boarding? Perhaps the Candian truckers refused to transport them across the border leaving the lowly wings on their own to fly to this Woodstock eatery? Sadly this is the world in which we live and while picking up a pizza on the way home for the stranded pre-teen I grabbed a small one for me. I'm so glad this restaurant is in my neighborhood. I can't sing their praises enough. The owners are so nice and so accommodating. I've eaten there once and it was delicious but now that we've been locked in!, we've ordered a few times. Their pear salad is by far the BEST salad I've had in years. I ordered their dressings for the salad to take home and had some difficulty but finally got it, my mistake in ordering I left off the pear reduction but, leave it to them, they fixed this without any commotion. Everything about this meal was perfect. Amazing food, great service and great alcohol free cocktails. Lots of gluten free options which is nice. The lamb with beans was kind meltingly good. Delightful bistro on SE Woodstock. We loved the pear salad. The entrees we chose were the duck cassoulet, and the fish. The first was smoky and rich. The second, light and adorned with local fresh chanterelles. The dessert was a pot de chocolat. It was smooth and not cloyingly sweet--which is my preference. Today was my first time here. What a great little place! This is exactly the kind of restaurant I love - small, cozy, not trendy but clearly dedicated to creating good food out of a passion for good food. We had simple sandwiches and everything about them were tasty and thoughtful - simply delicious! The prices were SO reasonable too! $9 for sandwich and lovely salad - that is less than you would pay for a sandwich and a soda at Jersey Mike's or equivalent. I can't wait to return for their eggs benedict specifically- I am in the process of perfecting my Julia Child's hollandaise and I am expecting these French natives can really make a great hollandaise so I will not only enjoy a great breakfast but likely learn something too:)!!! read more

In terms of customer service this place is 100% authentically French: RUDE! New in town and looking for an interesting spot for dinner on a Friday night and found this place. Should have read the Yelp reviews more carefully! This place has the air of a club for regulars only. Had a reservation but figured I could just show up early and hang out at the bar or inside until a table opened up, as you would at any other restaurant. Well, there is no bar, no lobby, and no waiting area. You just walk in and everyone awkwardly looks at you with a stare of "Why the hell are you in this restaurant?" One of the smug waiters told me my reservation wasn't until later and that there was basically no chance of a table opening up. Didn't invite me to wait inside or hang out at a nearby shop or apologize for the long wait, as any respectable restaurant in Portland would do. Instead he just left it at that, staring at me like "...so now please leave." Leave I did and I will never return. Learn to treat people nicely if you want to stay in the restaurant business in some place like Portland. We have options and don't need to be treated like idiots just to eat good food. read more

Delicious! They have a more limited takeout menu right now during the pandemic, but the choices are not disappointing. I ordered Bolognese, Root Vegetable Soup and Pear and Blue Cheese Salad. The bolognese was warm and comforting. The portion was plenty for two people with the rest of my order. The salad was my favorite. The pear was sweet and simmered with cinnamon and other spices that made the salad even more lovely. The addition of hazelnuts added a nice crunch. The soup was also amazing, but I was full so saved it for the next day and it is fantastic cold. I will be back! read more
