I SEEKED OUT THIS AMAZING CAFE at the airport because I had eaten at the stand alone restaurant on Adams St about 35 years ago. I remember it was a gem and couldn't wait to go to their airport cafe during my layover in Chicago. I walked and walked and walked to reach the Berghoff Cafe. It is located in Terminal 1, Concourse C, near gate 26 and it was TOTALLY WORTH THE WALK! Of course, I had the REUBEN. The fellow sliced up several thick slices of REAL corned beef and put it on homemade rye bread and added sauerkraut and Swiss cheese. He pressed it in a panini press. Then added the Thousand Island dressing. This was served to me in a TO GO BOX along with a pickle. It was absolutely delicious and very filling. The atmosphere was very nice with wood tables, a wood bar, checkered floor, etc. I wish though, that my EAT IN ORDER was placed on a plate. Everyone was eating out of boxes. This didn't fit the ambiance. THIS WAS THE BEST REUBEN I have had in years!! Warm, Delicious, Flavorful and Filling!! I highly recommend the Berghoff Cafe!! I had a very nice mushroom and onion omelette. This restaurant was right next to gate seat 26 and the price is is were very reasonable. I enjoyed interacting with the employees and the lady behind the counter was very efficient and very welcoming. There is a lot of seating and you can stand in line. Place your order and they make the omelette right in front of you. Since it was the morning I didn't have a drink but they seem to have a full bar and a lot of their own brand of IPAs. After walking through the options in concourse C, this felt like the best option for hot food. While a bit heavy for breakfast, I got the Cuban sandwich, and the hearty flavors definitely took me by surprise. Priced at $13 (great for airport prices), it was an extremely generous serving of shredded pork, layered with two thick sliced of ham and some melted provolone cheese, served with a dill pickle. The shredded pork was juicy and tender and tasted freshly made. Also got a cappuccino, which I was satisfied with. Both sandwich makers and the cashier were friendly and helpful in giving recommendations. As for ambiance, you order and pay first and find a place to sit out. Located next to C26, Berghoff was busy around 8 am. There was a line but it moved quickly (maybe 5 min) A good selection of made to order Omelettes and breakfast sandwiches. I wanted an Omelette but needed to take away so I got the Deluxe Croissant. The Croissant didn't have the usual flaky and was more like bread from a texture perspective. Once I got past that, the interior of this sandwich (eggs, mushrooms, bacon, Jack Cheese) were tasty and hit the spot. It was served on two slices of bread (always a dicey proposition with a sausage), but it held together with good, balanced flavors. Their sausage was a finely ground, very light colored sausage, not what I'd call a bratwurst, but who asked me? The guys on the short-order line were good-natured, jovial and aimed to please. We wanted to grab a quick lunch before boarding and Berghoff's seemed to be the best option. My husband and I split a corned beef sandwich. The sandwich is made to order. The corned beef was not pre-sliced, adding to its freshness. You can chose from a variety of breads, we opted for rye. The warm corned beef was topped with cheese and served with a pickle spear. The bartender started a tab for us and said we could walk to the other side of the cafe to order food and they can use the same tab, which worked great. It was nice to see all of the displays of sandwiches/wraps they offered since the menu is more like a traditional deli where you can create whatever you want. The wrap wasn't horrible but I didn't love the blue cheese and I wasn't aware it was on it. The fries were crispy and I enjoyed them. It only took about 5 minutes for them to make my food and there wasn't a line. The staff was great and the bartenders took great care of us. I've had to fly a lot lately for work and personal reasons, and it's reminded me that airport dining is largely a miserable landscape: you pay twenty bucks to wait twenty minutes for microwaved garbage. Berghoff Cafe is not that. Their breakfast is an actual, honest-to goodness short-order breakfast operation with food cooked to order in front of you. My deluxe croissant ended up being a real, cheesy, delicious omelette on a buttery croissant (okay, it wasn't flaky, but if you're looking for a proper French-style croissant at a classic "we fry up an omelette in five minutes" place, that's on you for missing the point here). On top of that, my hashbrown square was actually fresh and crispy. The staff was friendly, the food was good, and it was reasonably priced (at an airport, no less). One of the stronger food options in O'Hare especially if you are not going to Tortas Frontera for some reason. You get fresh made sandwiches with real food -- like a BLT turkey wrap where they slice the turkey fresh off a real, warm, turkey breast. I found Berghoff Cafe on Yelp and decided to make the long painful journey between terminals to try it out. IT WAS WORTH IT! When I arrived, the bar was packed and every table was in use. I was so relieved when I saw a cafeteria style area where I could quickly order and pay for food to-go. My only regret, traveling alone because I didn't have anyone to share a second sandwich type with. Hands down the best corned beef sandwich I have ever had. We arrived at O'Hare early enough to grab a meal before our flight, and decided to do it near our gate. The café was directly across from us, so we headed over there to see what they had. We were able to grab a couple seats at the end of a long table next to the bar, which we shared with a party of four, with a couple empty seats in between. My husband went to the counter and got our sandwiches - a corned beef and Swiss for me, and roast beef and Swiss for him. We also each had a cocktail. The sandwiches were amazing. Fabulous sandwiches. Great choices and really fast. I had a delicious turkey pesto panini. The turkey was off the bone hand carved and thick. Really tasty and loaded with turkey on a warm baguette sandwich roll. I was in a hurry to make a connecting flight but starving and they had it ready in under 5 minutes. All for $16. Airport food is generally over priced and mediocre. That being said, the two best options in Terminal 1 are Torta Frontera and Berghoff. The roast pork at Berghoff is very tender and flavorful, without being overly fatty. Other roast meats looked equally well cooked. The fact that each sandwich is made and grilled to order allows them to be crisp and fresh testing...even if they sometimes feel rushed and remove the sandwiches from the grill before the cheese is fully melted. These are messy sandwiches, so if you have the time, I'd recommend finding a communal table near the bar to enjoy it rather than taking it to go. read more
